Overview

MQSeries® Family

IBM's new framework of MQSeries products addresses integration from a business as well as an information technology (IT) perspective. The product family offers information systems that support the way you work, fit in with your business processes and workflow, and deliver real business advantages.

The family of Business Integration solutions, based around IBM's award-winning MQSeries software, consists of:

  • MQSeries: The undisputed leader in message-oriented middleware for message-based applications. The base MQSeries product totally and reliably connects any application, or system, to any other.
  • MQSeries Integrator: Powerful message brokering that centralizes knowledge of the enterprise (like business rules and application data formats) in a central hub. It makes it much quicker and simpler to distribute data relating to business events, and integrate applications to build new business.
  • MQSeries Workflow: Aligns and integrates your organization's resources and capabilities with your business strategies, accelerating process flow, cutting costs, eliminating errors, and improving workgroup productivity.

The MQSeries Integrator, previously marketed by IBM as the "NEON MQIntegrator," is fulfilled by IBM and licensed with IBM terms and conditions.

MQSeries Integrator enables MQSeries users to quickly and easily implement powerful, real-time application-to-application message transformation, and intelligent message routing capabilities.

The flexibility and ease-of-use of MQSeries Integrator lets companies rapidly add, extend, or replace applications within their business information flows. As a tool, it also accommodates custom-built or predefined application libraries.

It offers scalable data transformation and intelligent transaction routing, seamlessly integrating applications, databases, and networks.

Business effectiveness across an enterprise can be achieved with MQSeries Integrator by tighter integration with leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, legacy applications, and shrink-wrapped software.

These results can be realized regardless of hardware or network constraints, and enable the use of community messaging standards for cross-enterprise trading systems.

The product is available on the following platforms:

  • AIX® and DB2®, Oracle, or Sybase

Description

MQSeries Integrator: MQSeries Integrator software enables integration of applications and systems into robust, flexible, and scalable information networks. Based upon MQSeries messaging and queuing capabilities, MQSeries Integrator features intelligent message routing that directs data according to conditions set by the business, and message formatting enables applications to exchange information in a way that adapts the presentation of the content to the requirements of the environment. Its GUI allows users to perform integration tasks quickly and easily. Preconfigured templates for major packaged applications and e-business extensions will also be available. This product is now available under IBM terms and conditions worldwide. IBM will continue to add Business Integration capabilities to MQSeries Integrator and provide a route for IBM Business Partners to offer additional functionality.

MQSeries Workflow: MQSeries Workflow is a workflow management middleware offering that automates workflow between applications. It automates business processes involving people and applications to give organizations more control of their business activities. MQSeries Workflow helps you in daily business operations, planning, and management, to align and integrate resources and applications, to improve efficiency, and to gain higher market share. In addition, it enables the design of applications tailored to your business needs.

Year 2000

These products are Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with their associated documentation, they are capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the products properly exchange accurate date data with them.

The service end date for these Year-2000-ready products is January 31, 2001.

Product Positioning

MQSeries Family

The family of products based on IBM's industry-leading MQSeries software helps companies address Business Integration issues quickly and economically, making them more agile, customer-oriented and competitive.

The MQSeries family allows companies to maximize e-business opportunities by leveraging existing resources to improve speed-to-market and anticipate IT changes as their business changes.

IBM Business Integration consists of three offerings under the MQSeries brand which are designed to complement each other and be used together:

  • MQSeries for secure and reliable communication of application messages over a wide range of platforms.
  • MQSeries Integrator for transformation and routing of application message contents as transmitted via MQSeries. It is optimized for high-volume, in-storage transformation of messages. It is very useful in environments where many applications exchange information, each requiring slightly different message formats.
  • MQSeries Workflow for integration of application components via predefined workflow models is a more structured, though complex approach to integration. This is less about message transformation and routing between applications, but more about the integration of applications for different tasks, into a cohesive business process. MQSeries Workflow can automate the execution of activities, whether manual human tasks, user input into an application, or automatic flow of information into a backend transaction. It maintains state information about the process, for routing decisions, monitoring and auditing purposes.

MQSeries Integrator and MQSeries Workflow rely on MQSeries.

MQSeries Integrator intercepts MQSeries messages transforming and routing the message contents based upon information stored in a rules database.

MQSeries Workflow uses MQSeries messaging for the communication between the MQSeries Workflow clients and servers.

Statement of Direction

IBM intends to also offer the MQSeries Integrator product on the OS/390® platform in the near future. The NEON MQIntegrator product currently supports OS/390.

All information being released represents IBM's current intention, is subject to change or withdrawal, and represents goals and objectives.

Planning Information

The price model is linked to the number of processors per machine: or node on which the MQSeries Integrator programs will run. The machines relate to a required number of MQSeries Integrator Capacity Units. Additional capacity units are required as you move to larger systems, or add new systems to accommodate your business use of MQSeries Integrator. A similar price model is used on the base MQSeries products.

The capacity units are not transferable between products in different MQSeries Integrator Transfer Groups or with products in the base MQSeries Transfer Groups. In general, a chargeable upgrade path will be provided to enable existing use-authorization (capacity units) to be migrated to an MQSeries Integrator product at a functionally enhanced version or release level.

The following groups show the current MQSeries Integrator Transfer Groups and the platforms, within group, eligible for generic capacity unit transferability.

This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product.

Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.
