The AFP Font Collection Version 2 for MVS, OS/390, VM and VSE (5648-B33) supports printing for all non-DBCS languages in the following three typefaces:

  • Courier
  • Helvetica
  • Times New Roman
Additional fixed-space Latin1 fonts are available in:
  • Boldface
  • Gothic Text
  • Letter Gothic

Additional international language support, including support for printing the new euro currency symbol of the European Monetary and Economic Union, was announced in Software Announcement 298-261 dated September 8, 1998.

The optional font programs and utilities in the companion product AFP Font Collection for AIX, OS/400 and OS/2 (5648-B45) run in a personal computer using OS/2. The Type Transformer program enables you to acquire Type 1 or CID keyed outline fonts from any font vendor, in any typeface, and create AFP fonts in raster or outline font format. For more information on the AFP font programs, refer to Software Announcement 298-314 dated September 8, 1998.

What's New in This Announcement?

With this announcement, AFP Font Collection Version 2 now includes double-byte (DBCS) fonts in 240 dpi AFP raster format and in AFP outline format for printing in Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Prior to this announcement, it was necessary to create DBCS font character sets and coded fonts from CID keyed outlines using the AFP Type Transformer program, and upload them to host systems for printing. This meant that S/390 (R) customers had to purchase the optional font programs in order to create and use DBCS fonts. Now you can print in Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese with the fonts provided in the AFP Font Collection without any additional preparation.

The 240 dpi raster fonts are provided in the following sizes:

         Point Size Box Size

6.0 20 7.2 24 8.4 28 9.6 32 10.8 36 12.0 40 13.8 46 15.6 52 18.0 60 20.4 68 24.0 80

4.8-, 30- and 36-point fonts (box sizes 16, 100 and 120) are available only as outline fonts due to file size or quality issues associated with rasterizing these character sets.

The DBCS Font Features of AFP Font Collection V2.1.0 also include a set of simulated raster fonts in AFP outline format. These fonts contain metric information that allows them to be positioned horizontally and on the baseline exactly the same as existing 240 dpi raster fonts. Print Services Facility Version 3.1.0 for OS/390 contains new support that allows it to recognize these special fonts and process them so that text is positioned the same as when using raster fonts.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: The DBCS fonts in the AFP Font Collection are intended to support printing on AFP/IPDS printers that accept host downloaded fonts using Print Services Facility (TM). Printers must either be able to process 240 dpi raster fonts, or support AFP outline fonts. The ability to use host downloaded DBCS fonts is subject to availability of sufficient printer font storage. Some of the supported printers are:

  • IBM InfoPrint (TM) 4000
  • IBM InfoPrint 3000
  • IBM InfoPrint 60
  • IBM InfoPrint 62
  • IBM InfoPrint 32
  • IBM InfoPrint 20
  • IBM 3935
  • IBM 3900
  • IBM 3827, 3828, 3829, 3835
  • IBM 3160
  • IBM 3130
  • IBM 3124 (Japan only)
Software Requirements: The DBCS fonts for the AFP Font Collection require one of the IBM Print Services Facility products listed below:
  • PSF/MVS (TM) V2.2 (5695-040)

  • PSF Version 3.1.0 for OS/390 (R) (5655-B17) or a later release

  • PSF/VSE Version 2.1.0 (5686-040)
Limitations: The AFP DBCS fonts described in this announcement are for installation in MVS, OS/390 and VSE operating systems. They are not supplied in a format for installation in VM.

The AFP DBCS fonts are not provided in 300 dpi raster format.

Support for the "simulation raster fonts" that contain special metrics to position the baselines the same as existing raster fonts is provided only in PSF Version 3 for OS/390.

Planning Information

Packaging: The AFP DBCS Fonts are an optional, priced feature of the AFP Font Collection Version 2. They are delivered on separate tape media from the AFP Font Collection's single byte fonts.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced features use the security and auditability features of the MVS, OS/390 and VSE operating systems.
