The IBM AFP (TM) Font Collection for MVS (TM), OS/390 (R), VM and VSE (5648-B33) provides a comprehensive set of AFP fonts to give you consistent printed output on AFP printers at 240 or 300 dpi using raster fonts, or at any resolution on printers that use AFP outline fonts. The AFP Font Collection supports printing in approximately forty-six languages, including printing in double-byte languages such as Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
The optional Outline Fonts and Programs feature of the companion product, AFP Font Collection for AIX (R), OS/400 (R) and OS/2 (R) (program number 5648-B45), allows you to acquire Type 1 or CID keyed outline fonts in any typeface of your choice and create AFP fonts in raster format, or in AFP outline format. The Type 1 and CID keyed outline fonts also allow you to view your AFP documents on Windows (TM) 95, Windows NT (R) or OS/2 systems, or via the Netscape or Internet Explorer browser with WYSIWYG fidelity.
The AFP Font Collection Version 2 now includes double-byte (DBCS) AFP fonts in 240 dpi raster format and in AFP outline format for the following languages and typefaces:
- Heisei Maru Gothic
- Heisei Kaku Gothic
- Heisei Mincho
- Korean (includes 11,172 Hangul Characters)
- Simplified Chinese
- Fang Song (GB)
- Hei (GB)
- Kai (GB)
- Song (GBK)
- Traditional Chinese
The AFP DBCS fonts in this announcement are used with Print Services Facility (TM)/MVS V2.2, Print Services Facility V3 for OS/390 or Print Services Facility/VSE V2.1.
Planned Availability Dates

- Times New Roman
- Gothic Text
- Letter Gothic
The optional font programs and utilities in the companion product AFP Font Collection for AIX, OS/400 and OS/2 (5648-B45) run in a personal computer using OS/2. The Type Transformer program enables you to acquire Type 1 or CID keyed outline fonts from any font vendor, in any typeface, and create AFP fonts in raster or outline font format. For more information on the AFP font programs, refer to Software Announcement 298-314 dated September 8, 1998.
What's New in This Announcement?
With this announcement, AFP Font Collection Version 2 now includes double-byte (DBCS) fonts in 240 dpi AFP raster format and in AFP outline format for printing in Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Prior to this announcement, it was necessary to create DBCS font character sets and coded fonts from CID keyed outlines using the AFP Type Transformer program, and upload them to host systems for printing. This meant that S/390 (R) customers had to purchase the optional font programs in order to create and use DBCS fonts. Now you can print in Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese with the fonts provided in the AFP Font Collection without any additional preparation.
The 240 dpi raster fonts are provided in the following sizes:
Point Size Box Size
6.0 20 7.2 24 8.4 28 9.6 32 10.8 36 12.0 40 13.8 46 15.6 52 18.0 60 20.4 68 24.0 80
4.8-, 30- and 36-point fonts (box sizes 16, 100 and 120) are available only as outline fonts due to file size or quality issues associated with rasterizing these character sets.
The DBCS Font Features of AFP Font Collection V2.1.0 also include a set of simulated raster fonts in AFP outline format. These fonts contain metric information that allows them to be positioned horizontally and on the baseline exactly the same as existing 240 dpi raster fonts. Print Services Facility Version 3.1.0 for OS/390 contains new support that allows it to recognize these special fonts and process them so that text is positioned the same as when using raster fonts.
This product does not have date dependencies and is, therefore, Year 2000 ready.
This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.
This announcement complements the announcement of AFP Font Collection Version 2 for MVS, OS/390, VM and VSE, Software Announcement 298-261 dated September 8, 1998, AFP Font Collection Version 2 for AIX, OS/400 and OS/2, Software Announcement 298-314 dated September 8, 1998, and AFP Font Collection Delivers DBCS Fonts for OS/400, AIX and OS/2, Software Announcement 298-453 dated December 15, 1998, with the addition of new optional features for printing in Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
