OverviewVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is an important step forward in the growing affinity between VSE and OS/390®. Application portability between VSE and OS/390 is greatly increased with the introduction of the CICS® Transaction Server for VSE/ESA (CICS TS VSE/ESA). What's New
CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA:
With the CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA you can implement robust,
business-critical e-business and client/server enterprise solutions
across multiple hardware platforms and operating systems. The new
functions in CICS improve application programming, system programming,
system management, and the reliability and integrity of your CICS system.
Key benefits include exploitation of ESA/390 subsystem storage
protection; virtual storage constraint relief; extended Application
Programming Interface (API) and System Programming Interface (SPI); a
front end programming interface (FEPI); shared data table for improved
performance and availability; and the CICS Web Interface (CWI).
Security in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4: A Basic Security Manager for sign-on and transaction security is provided. If you want more comprehensive security, an external security manager, such as CA-Top Secret** for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0, may meet your needs. Additional VSE/ESA Base Product Changes: Include the new Release 3 of DITTO/ESA with significant improvements (such as Security Manager Support, new POWER spool services and additional tape support functions). The new release 3 of High Level Assembler for MVS, VM and VSE provides support for new diagnostic and cross-references features, and numerous language enhancements. The S/390® Open Systems Adapter Support Facility is now pre-installed in the VSE Base System. Enhancements Added Since VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3: Enhancements that were already announced include the new, priced, Network File System (NFS) feature of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA; the new, priced, feature offering enhanced IBM RAMAC® Virtual Array (IXFP/SnapShot for VSE/ESA) support; OSA-2 Fast Ethernet support and support for the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server G5. New or Enhanced Optional Programs: IBM Millennium Language Extension for COBOL and PL/I, CCCA Version 2, Opti-Audit Extension, a new version of MQSeries®, and a new release of DFSORT, DL/I VSE and VisualAge® Generator. Intended CustomersAll current VSE users, alone or in combination with VM/ESA®; OS/390 (MVS) enterprises requiring centrally managed remote unattended systems. Key PrerequisitesVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 provides support for ESA/390 servers. It is supported native, under PR/SM LPAR, or running as a guest under VM/ESA. Planned Availability Dates
DescriptionThe value of OS/390 affinity to VSE customers and IBM Business Partners is significant. VSE requirements can often be addressed in the most cost-effective way by reusing, or "porting" code from OS/390. Where appropriate, affinity may result in more timely availability of function, higher quality, and lower cost to the VSE customer. It can help protect customer investments in new or existing VSE applications and skills. That's because affinity helps ensure VSE assets can relatively easily be transformed into OS/390 assets if, and when, the customer chooses to do so. IBM Business Partners can sometimes expand the opportunity for OS/390 products by making them available to the VSE community. Most CICS applications for OS/390 are source compatible with CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1 (CICS TS VSE/ESA). That affinity can help improve the ROI (Return on Investment) because a lower incremental investment may be needed to adapt the original OS/390 product to VSE. CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Provides the Following:Improved Reliability and Availability
Extensive Virtual Storage Constraint Relief (VSCR): The majority of the CICS nucleus and all major CICS control blocks are moved above the 16 MB line. That frees limited 24-bit address space for use by customer applications. Expanded System Management and Application Programming Support: Many significant enhancements have been made, including:
New Network Computing Capabilities
Note: Availability of the CICS Web Interface and 3270 Bridge will be announced at a later date.
For a full description, refer to Software Announcement 298-373 , dated September 29, 1998 (CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1). CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 Coexistence EnvironmentDuring the transition to CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1 (CICS TS VSE/ESA), customers may want to have both CICS TS VSE/ESA and CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 active at the same time. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 accommodates that requirement by shipping CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4. CICS TS VSE/ESA and CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 may run independently, or be connected by Multiple Region Option (MRO). Customers who want to use functions that are in CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 but not in CICS TS VSE/ESA can use them in the CICS coexistence environment. For example, CICS TS VSE/ESA has no MACRO level APIs, no BTAM support, no CICS internal security, and no direct control block access. In addition, programs written in RPG II, DOS PL/I (without recompile using PL/I for VSE/ESA), and C/370 (without recompile using C for VSE/ESA) are not supported by CICS TS VSE/ESA. Security in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4For security that was formerly provided within CICS itself ("CICS-internal security") CICS TS VSE/ESA relies on an external security manager, using OS/390-like RACROUTE interfaces. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 introduces the new Basic Security Manager (BSM) as part of VSE Central Functions, covering the most urgent security needs. A full-function External Security Manager (ESM) like CA-Top Secret Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 may be needed by customers with more comprehensive security requirements. However, any equivalent VSE-based external security manager supporting RACROUTE standards may be used alternatively. Note: Only one security manager, either the BSM or one ESM, can be activated on one VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 system. Basic Security Manager: The BSM supports Batch Signon, CICS Signon and Transaction ID security and protects VSAM files, libraries, sublibraries, and library members. For logging and reporting of BSM protected VSAM files libraries, sublibraries, and library members, VSE/ACLR can be used. CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 offers CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA which gives customers the control they need to help eliminate exposures, help ensure data integrity, and comply with auditing and reporting requirements. It offers comprehensive control, yet is flexible enough to meet the needs of changing organizations and does not impede users from doing their jobs. CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 helps customers protect key CICS resources, batch, DITTO and DL/I. With CA-Top Secret, customers can protect files, DASD and tape volumes, libraries, library members, programs, transactions, terminals, and much more. It is packaged together with the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 base product set. It is an optional, priced product licensed to IBM from Computer Associates International, Inc. IBM will license CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 to customers under IBM terms. Turbo Dispatcher Only and ESA/390 OnlyEarlier releases of VSE/ESA Version 2 gave users a choice of either the older "standard" dispatcher, or the new Turbo Dispatcher with support for uni- and n-way servers. Turbo Dispatcher is now the only dispatcher for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4. The standard dispatcher is no longer available. Similarly, previous releases of VSE/ESA Version 2 supported both ESA/370 and ESA/390 servers. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 now supports ESA/390 servers only. That means VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is not supported on ESA/370 servers such as ES/4381-9xE or ES/3090-E/J/S models. Additional VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 EnhancementsHigh Level Assembler for MVS, VM and VSE Version 1 Release 3: Release 3 of the IBM High Level Assembler for MVS, VM and VSE in the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 base provides support for new ESA/390 instructions, new diagnostic and cross-reference features, and numerous language enhancements. The optional Toolkit feature supports these enhancements and provides some extensive enhancements to the XREF component. DITTO/ESA for VSE Version 1 Release 3: The new release of DITTO/ESA for VSE provides External Security Manager support, additional tape support and functions such as tape label processing enhancements. In addition, more POWER spool services, enhancements such as performance boost and additional information for System Catalog Services (SCS), VSAM editor improvements, and more, are provided. DL/I for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 11: DL/I for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 11 is the hierarchical database management system for VSE/ESA. It runs on VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 and supports CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1 for online transaction processing. It can coexist with DL/I DOS/VS Version 1 Release 10 (which supports CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3) on the same VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 system. MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1: The new MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 implements enhanced MQSeries functionality. These contain the TCP/IP support in addition to the SNA LU6.2 support, improved API support, support of larger messages and transmit batch sizes. Additionally, it provides Client support where MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 acts as a server product, and support for PL/I for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 1 or later, and C for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 1 or later, in addition to COBOL for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 1 or later. MQSeries for VSE/ESA enables you for secure and reliable communication of application messages over a wide range of platforms. All the new functions of MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 can help companies to address Business Integration issues quickly and economically, and to maximize e-business opportunities by leveraging existing resources help to improve speed-to-market. For further information, refer to Software Announcement 298-374 , dated September 29, 1998. Miscellaneous: The following enhancements to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 were already announced:

Depending on the customer environment and the products used, the above values may not be sufficient for productive use of the system. Magnetic tape processing capabilities for customer tapes in the IBM support centers could be limited to a subset of the available tape media types. LANRES/VSE Hardware Requirements
Note: LANRES/VSE does not support TCP/IP communications. Software Requirements: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is supported native, under PR/SM LPAR, or running as a guest under VM/ESA®. It runs on the VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2.0 and above. In this case, all processors are supported that are supported by the VM/ESA release used. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is supported in the VM modes: V=V Virtual Guest
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is supported without page data set (NOPDS option). LANRES/VSE Software Requirements
DWF for OS/2 Software Requirements
DWF for Windows Software Requirements
Compatibility: Compatibility aspects are the same as described in Software Announcement 297-413 , dated October 7, 1997 (VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3), with the following changes: ESA/370 processors are no longer supported by VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4. This means that VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is not supported by the following processors:
IBM 9332 Model 600, 9335, and 0671 Disks are not supported as system devices, but may be used for data. Limitations: Limitations are the same as described in Software Announcement 297-413 , dated October 7, 1997 (VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3), with the following changes:
The overall performance of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 depends on the individual hardware and software components and on the specific environment and setup parameters. In general, the overall CPU requirement of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is similar to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3. This applies as long as the same environment is used, (for example, Turbo Dispatcher, and Batch or CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3), without exploitation of new functions. For those users who so far did not exploit the Turbo Dispatcher, the overhead on uni-processor VSEs is generally up to 5% to 10% (VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3). Actual customer experience may vary. Using the new CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1 will impact CPU-times and partition capacity. The number of I/O operations will not change for comparable setups. By moving the POWER Queue File virtual storage copy above the line, more POWER space is available for using larger data blocks (DBLKs), and/or for a larger POWER Queue File, up to the former limit of 32766 entries. CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1 (CICS TS VSE/ESA)Using CICS TS VSE/ESA on VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4, a significant VSCR (Virtual Storage Constraint Relief) has been provided which increases the capacity of a single CICS partition. New performance related functions (separate VSAM LSR buffers for data and index, or Shared Data Tables) may at least partly compensate for the required CPU-time increase to do online work. More InformationFor more information on VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 and CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1 performance, visit the VSE/ESA home page which will refer you to updated performance information after December 1998: User Group Requirements: This announcement satisfies requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities, which include Australasian SHARE/GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, G.U.I.D.E. This means that VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is not supported by the following processors:
IBM 9332 Model 600, 9335, and 0671 Disks are not supported as system devices, but may be used for data. Furthermore, consider the following:
CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 Coexistence Environment: The VSE Interactive User Interface (IUI) and VSE/ICCF now support CICS TS VSE/ESA. VSE/ICCF does not run with CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3. There is only minimal support for CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 in IUI. Customers with applications using the DL/I database will need DL/I for VSE Version 1 Release 11 for CICS TS VSE/ESA and DL/I DOS/VS Version 1 Release 10 for CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3. To help ensure their investments in VSE business systems and applications continue to provide value in 2000 and beyond, all elements of the customer's information system must be Year 2000 ready:
From an operating system point of view, unquestionably most VSE customers will find significant value in the latest release of VSE/ESA. More than ever, IBM encourages all VSE users to keep their VSE technology reasonably current. However, VSE also recognizes that addressing Year 2000 issues will be a significant challenge for most customers. VSE does not want to put customers in a position where they might have to choose between needed application changes and upgrading their VSE operating system at a potentially critical time simply to be on a supported version/release. Therefore, VSE plans to provide support for all the Year 2000 ready versions/releases of VSE/ESA until at least January 31, 2001. Besides the VSE/ESA operating system, the installed program products and applications must be Year 2000 ready. For details on IBM program products, visit the IBM Year 2000 home page: For planning purposes, here is the service support status or outlook for all currently announced versions and releases of VSE/ESA.
Note "support" requires both a Year 2000 ready VSE/ESA release and Year 2000 ready hardware. Beginning December 31, 1999, regardless of the support status of a specific version or release, VSE/ESA will be considered not supported if used with a processor that is not Year 2000 ready. To determine if a processor is Year 2000 ready, visit the IBM Year 2000 home page: Also, refer to the IBM publication The Year 2000 and 2-Digit Dates: A Guide for Planning and Implementation (GC28-1251). Similarly, beginning December 31, 1999, regardless of the support status of a specific version or release, VSE/ESA will be considered unsupported if used with version and release of VM/ESA that is not Year 2000 ready. VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2 and later are Year 2000 ready. However, visit the IBM VM/ESA home page: http://www.vm.ibm.com or the IBM Year 2000 home page: As with hardware, refer to the IBM publication The Year 2000 and 2-Digit Dates: A Guide for Planning and Implementation (GC28-1251). NetView FTP for VSE Version 1 (5686-013): This program is withdrawn from marketing as of December 31, 1997. However, customers who need Year 2000 support for this program can order APAR PQ15642 through regular service channels. Packaging: Depending on the order, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 will be packaged as follows:
Changes in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4:
The following programs/features are on the VSE/ESA Extended Base tape, stacked one after the other on the medium.
Depending on the order, the package will contain one or more additional tapes/cartridges for the VSE/ESA optional programs, stacked one after the other on the medium. Program directories for the component programs, base and optional, are contained in the package, as well as the entitlement set of publications of the ordered programs. The program directory for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 has the following IBM form number: GI10-0485. Note: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 is not packaged on the IBM 3590 tape cartridge. TCP/IP for VSE/ESA and LE for VSE/ESA: TCP/IP for VSE/ESA and LE for VSE/ESA will be shipped on the base tape/cartridge. Users who only need the C Language Run-Time Support (RTS), which is part of LE for VSE/ESA, can customize their system according to this need. TCP/IP for VSE/ESA will be shipped enabled for demo mode only. This allows you to test the entire function sets on your VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 system in a functionally limited way (not suited for any production purposes). The different function sets must be enabled via user access keys. CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0: CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 is always shipped with your VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 SIPO order. It is key protected and requires a unique user access key. CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 requires CA90s Services for VSE (CA90s) Version 1 Release 4 (or higher) as prerequisite. CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 can run in demo mode without user access keys but still requiring CA90s. "Demo mode" means all functions in CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 can be used, however, resources are not protected. If a security violation occurs, it will be reported with a console message only. Customers who already have CA90s installed on their system need to check the required level for use with CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 by contacting Computer Associates International, Inc. (CAI Inc.) as described below. Customers who do not have CA90s installed on their system must order it from CAI Inc. Ordering from CAI Inc.
The customer will be registered and licensed for CA90s by CAI Inc. who will also provide services for CA90s. CA90s is a Computer Associates International, Inc. product, not an IBM product. IBM does not assume any responsibility for CA90s either expressed nor implied. CA90s is free of charge. For further information, refer to Software Announcement 298-350 , dated September 29, 1998. Security, Auditability, and ControlThe announced programs use the security and auditability features of its components. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Ordering InformationSubsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed. Current Licensees: IBM is now accepting orders for current licenses on a limited basis. For more information, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. Current licensees of VSE/ESA Version 2 must reorder this release via MES. Ordering instructions are scheduled to be mailed from IBM Software Manufacturing Solutions (SMS) to all current licensees in March 1999. New Licensees: Orders for new licenses may be configured in CFSW, syslinked to AAS, and entered into AAS beginning of September 29, 1998. Shipment will commence on the planned availability date. Orders that ship after the planned availability date will receive VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4. New users of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 should specify:
