Overview

IBM Data Interfile Transfer, Testing, and Operations Utility for ESA (DITTO/ESA) is IBM's best known storage media and data maintenance utility solution for the OS/390 (R) (MVS (TM)), VSE, and VM environments. DITTO is a key resource for data processing professionals due to its many versatile functions provided for working with tapes, disks, VTOCs and catalogs, VSAM data, VSE library members, sequential data sets and files, MVS Object Access Method (OAM) objects, and card images.

DITTO provides a consistent package of functions for the OS/390 (MVS), VSE, and VM user with a common user interface. It supports the respective ESA operating system in an ESA environment to help users to display, duplicate, maintain, repair, and even recover data.

DITTO's functions can be used in full-screen mode using its own interactive panel driver, thus being independent from VSE ICCF or MVS ISPF interactive full-screen environments.

DITTO can be used in REXX execs or procedures using DITTO's keyword command mode. For routine tasks, DITTO can be used in batch jobs using control statements. In emergency situations, it can also be used on a system console in dialog mode. For VSE users it is additionally available on a VSE stand-alone backup tape.

DITTO/ESA supports and exploits new features of the OS/390, the VSE/ESA, and the VM/ESA (R) operating systems, adding new functions and many improvements based on several customer requirements. DITTO/ESA uses 31-bit addressing. It is enabled for National Language Support and can be translated if requested.

This new Release 3 also incorporates maintenance, and supersedes the DITTO/ESA Release 2 product family as well as previous DITTO releases.

Intended Customers

DITTO/ESA is designed to help increase productivity of data processing professionals in S/390 (R) environments.

System programmers and application programmers, for example, may find their needs met by DITTO's new or improved functions to work with data. VM users, running MVS or VSE as a guest, may find DITTO's capability to run MVS DITTO or VSE DITTO from a VM DITTO session very useful.

Key Prerequisites

DITTO/ESA runs on any S/390 hardware supported by OS/390 Version 2, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4, VM/ESA Version 2, or later releases unless otherwise stated. For details refer to the Technical Information section of this announcement.

DESCRIPTION

DITTO/ESA Release 3 is designed to help increase the productivity of your system personnel by its added functions, its improved Common User Access (R) (CUA (R)) based user interface, and additional tape support and functions.

DITTO/ESA Release 3 addresses the need of users for an easy approach to perform their tasks at a minimum of learning and effort. It supersedes DITTO/ESA Release 2 and incorporates many suggestions and fixes.

Additional tape support and functions such as:

Tape Label Processing Enhancements: Enhanced tape label processing adds ANSI type 4 label support for more flexibility in processing tapes according to ANSI standards.

Enhanced IBM Standard Tape Label (SL) processing adds support for tape block sizes greater than 32KB and data set sequence numbers greater than 9999 in tape labels to meet the huge storage capacity of latest tape media.

Standard Label (SL) support for basic tape functions under MVS to resolve customer issues.

Enhanced Initialize Tape: The INT function now supports scaling of high capacity tape media. A new parameter, SCALE=nn% lets the user select the desired amount of data to be stored on a tape medium. It could be used, for example, to temporarily reduce medium capacity to gain performance.

Expanded support for variable length blocks of up to 64K.

VSE External Security Manager Support: This support is intended to meet the VSE user requirement for improved security checking using DITTO.

More POWER Spool Services and Support for VSE/ESA Environments: A new function, Spool Services (SPS), enables VSE users to work with the VSE POWER spool queues (LST, PUN, RDR, XMT) using DITTO's full-screen interactive user interface. This function lists all entries of the selected queue and allows the user to enter a command directly on an entry to browse, alter, delete, hold, release, and transfer it.

Enhancements such as:

Exploit wide screen for DITTO list functions to display more information reducing the need to toggle between screen displays.

Performance boost for System Catalog Services (SCS) function under MVS, by exploiting the new catalog search interface introduced by DFSMS (TM) 1.4. It significantly improves performance for SCS and VDL functions. Also, the full-screen display now includes more SMS related information. The statistical information has changed from byte to kilobyte (KB) to support larger amounts.

DITTO VSAM editor improvements for ISPF users provide better compatibility of the DITTO editor with ISPF editor commands to reduce inconveniences in using both editors.

LIKE and RELEASE support (QSAM data set allocation).

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

DITTO/ESA is a general purpose and easy-to-use family of tools for systems and application programmers, as well as for operations support personnel working in ESA environments. Programmers may use it for testing and data handling in both online and batch environments. Operations people may use it in support of their daily data handling tasks on various storage media. Extensive online help information and a CUA interface enable users to use the functions without education or the use of manuals.

DITTO/ESA may be used in place of many system utilities with the advantage of a single user interface among S/390 environments.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: DITTO/ESA is designed to operate on any IBM Enterprise Systems Architecture (ESA) capable processor supported by the operating systems listed in the Software Requirements section. It requires an ESA machine. DITTO/ESA supports all tape devices and DASD that are compatible with the operating systems listed in the Software Requirements section. It loads in the user's private area and runs as a normal application program.

DITTO requires a minimum of 500 KB program storage for batch mode and line mode operation, and a minimum of 1000 KB for full-screen operation (KB equals 1024 bytes). The total program storage required depends on the number of different functions invoked in one DITTO session. The DITTO function SCS needs additional storage to load the IDCAMS utility program.

For most DITTO sessions, approximately 128 KB storage for data buffers will be sufficient. However, additional storage may be required to process large catalogs, libraries, VTOCs, or data blocks.

Under VSE, specifying the size of GETVIS storage in the EXEC statement is not required. If the SIZE parameter is specified, it is ignored.

Software Requirements: DITTO/ESA Release 3 is designed to operate under the following operating systems or subsequent releases, unless otherwise stated:

  • OS/390 (R) Version 2 Release 4 (5647-A01)

  • Virtual Storage Extended/Enterprise Systems Architecture (VSE/ESA) Version 2 Release 4 (5690-VSE), simultaneously announced with this announcement

  • Virtual Machine/Enterprise Systems Architecture (VM/ESA (R)) Version 2 (5654-030)
DITTO/ESA runs in 31-bit mode and exploits the Enterprise Systems Architecture (ESA).

Note: For functions making use of Object Access Method (OAM) objects, DATABASE 2 (TM) (DB2 (R) ) Version 2 (5665-DB2) licensed program or later is required.

Under VM, VSE/VSAM for VM Functional Subset Version 6 Release 1 (5686-081) or later is required to use DITTO's VSAM functions natively.

If using RACF (R) for function access control and authorization verification, Release 1.9 or later is required, or if under OS/390, the OS/390 Security Server (optional feature of 5645-001) is required.
