Overview
MQSeries Family
IBM has introduced a new framework of products based on MQSeries that aims to address integration from a business and an IT perspective. Information systems can support the way you work, fit in with your business processes and workflow, and deliver real business advantage.
The family of Business Integration solutions, based around IBM's award-winning MQSeries software, consists of:
MQSeries -- the undisputed leader in message-oriented middleware. It provides a totally reliable application or system connection to any other environment. You can begin to think of applications like building blocks that can be connected to share information in any way you like.
MQSeries Integrator -- powerful message brokering that centralizes knowledge of the enterprise (for example, business rules and application data formats) in a central hub. It makes it much quicker and simpler to distribute data relating to business events, and integrate applications to build new business.
MQSeries Workflow -- aligns and integrates your organization's resources and capabilities with your business strategies, accelerating process flow, cutting costs, eliminating errors, and improving workgroup productivity. Workflow supports Business Process Reengineering (BPR). BPR can be used to design, refine, document, and control your processes, so you can focus on the work at hand.
MQSeries has enhanced its position and is now SAP-certified for message handling with SAP R/3 V4 on the following MQSeries products:
- MQSeries link for R/3 for: AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Windows NT, and AS/400
MQSeries link for R/3 connects your existing R/3 business applications with other R/3, in addition to R/2, and non-SAP legacy systems.
It also connects SAP R/3 with other programs across IBM and compatible platforms. Programming resources are used efficiently, applications are easily adaptable and more flexible, and network management is easier. Programs become independent of communications protocols and the availability of systems.
Version 1.2 products also have usability enhancements and give more throughput by using load balancing.

MQSeries Link for R/3 products
The MQSeries link for R/3 is an interface that enables you to integrate your R/3 applications with applications running in other environments, including those on SAP R/3 and R/2 systems.
MQSeries link for R/3 works with the Application Link Enabling (ALE) layer of the R/3 system to transmit Intermediate Documents (IDOCs) into and out of your R/3 system, using MQSeries to carry the information.
It extends the scope of your business by allowing you to link your R/3 applications to other applications accessible through formats.
MQSeries link for R/3 can be used to connect an R/3 system to:
- Other R/3 systems
- R/2 systems
- Any other system that you want to exchange data with an R/3 system, such as a legacy database holding enterprise data.
MQSeries Link for R/3, Version 1.2
The major changes introduced in Version 1.2 are:
- Support for the SAP R/3 Version 4 IDOCs -- Version 4 IDOCs have
different DC and DD structures.
- Support for inbound server load balancing -- The inbound server
now supports R/3 load balancing. R/3 system administrators can
balance the inbound server traffic over multiple R/3 application
servers.
- Sample data conversion exit added -- This may be required when
data is being passed between disparate systems.
- Outbound support for batched IDOCs -- A batch of IDOCs can now be
placed into a single MQ (TM) message on the outbound server.
- Usability enhancement
V4 SAP Certification
MQSeries is the first product in the marketplace to pass the R/3 V4 Cross-Application -- ALE Message Handling Systems (CA-AMS) certification. SAP certification provides MQSeries with a SAP-certified interface. This provides guaranteed support in future releases of SAP and a stable infrastructure for applications running on SAP systems.
Load Balancing
SAP uses load balancing to distribute users across multiple application servers. SAP considers the capacity of each server and determines which one is loaded least.
The advantages of load balancing are:
- A connection is established to an available application server
with the least load.
- The connections are independent of specific application servers and are determined at run time.
Sample Data Conversion
The data conversion exit library is now shipped with the MQSeries link for R/3 products.
Outbound Support for Batched IDOCs
Batching enables a number of IDOCs to be grouped together in a single message. The MQSeries link for R/3 outbound server supports this function, allowing a number of IDOCs to be sent to MQSeries in a single MQSeries message.
Usability Enhancements
There is now a Windows NT LAN install available.
MQSeries
MQSeries messaging software is the best solution to enable different IT systems to work together, allowing your business to achieve a competitive advantage. Information flows through the enterprise, with delivery assured even after temporary network or system failures. MQSeries helps information systems work together to meet the demands of companies operating in today's dynamic commercial marketplaces.
MQSeries makes it easier and simpler to develop and integrate the new generation of e-business applications. This not only speeds their development but also reduces the expense of providing reliable access over the Internet to core business data, transaction systems, and enterprise resources. MQSeries eliminates concerns about the complexity of application-to-application connectivity across the company. Applications can be developed in isolation while MQSeries sets the standard for application connectivity throughout the company. It reduces the cost and time needed to make applications available to the business. Message delivery is assured even across a temporary network and during system failures. That minimizes downtime and maximizes productivity thereby increasing revenues from your business operations.
MQSeries Integrator: MQSeries Integrator software enables integration of applications and systems into robust, flexible, and scaleable information networks. Based on MQSeries messaging and queuing capabilities, MQSeries Integrator features intelligent message routing that directs data according to conditions set by the business, and message formatting that enables applications to exchange information. Its graphical user interface allows users to perform integration tasks quickly and easily. Preconfigured templates for major packaged applications and e-business extensions will also be available. An initial version, MQIntegrator, is generally available now from New Era of Networks and is marketed jointly by IBM. This product will be manufactured and supplied under IBM terms and conditions worldwide. IBM will continue to add Business Integration capabilities to MQSeries Integrator and provide an infrastructure for IBM partners to offer additional functionality.
MQSeries Workflow: MQSeries Workflow is a workflow management middleware offering that automates workflow between applications, and automates business processes involving people and applications to give organizations more control of their business activities. MQSeries Workflow helps you in daily business operations, planning, and management. It aligns and integrates resources and applications, to improve efficiency and help you gain higher market share. In addition, it enables the design of applications tailored to your business.
MQSeries Business Integration: Business Integration improves customer service, reduces costs, and helps reduce wasted effort. It can optimize the business processes for any organization in any industry. It can integrate your value chain across suppliers and customers, allowing you to act more readily, responsively, and effectively. Business Integration helps companies rapidly deploy and get better value from e-business and the Internet. It can help solve the information integration issues of mergers and acquisitions.
IBM's architected Business Integration offering has three components:
- MQSeries provides reliable interconnection over more than 25
platforms.
- MQIntegrator simplifies message transformation, rules, and
intelligent routing.
- MQSeries Workflow leverages corporate effectiveness through optimized use of staff and computing resources.
A graphical build tool and a transactional quality run time provide for superior user interaction. Staff can now be deployed on activities where they add maximum value, such as customer service. Their expertise and knowledge can focus on important business activities rather than be distracted by routine. The routine is taken care of by machine interaction.
Workflow and messaging are key to corporate responsiveness. Business activities instantly share customer and status information through an event-driven model triggered from the text or content of individual business transactions. These events reliably flow over the backbone to trigger further computing to staff through worklists and personal activity.
Year 2000
These products are Year 2000 ready. Used in accordance with its associated documentation, it can correctly process, provide, or receive date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. All other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product must properly exchange accurate date data with it.
The service end date for this Year-2000-ready product is January 31, 2001.
IBM has announced a family of products based on IBM's industry-leading MQSeries software that helps companies address Business Integration issues quickly and economically. This can help your company become more agile, customer-oriented, and competitive as it faces the increasing complexities of conducting business globally and electronically. The MQSeries family allows companies to maximize e-business opportunities by leveraging existing resources to improve speed-to-market and anticipate IT changes as their business changes.
IBM Business Integration consists of three offerings under the MQSeries brand which can be used together or separately:
- MQSeries for secure and reliable communication of application
messages over a wide range of platforms
- MQIntegrator for transformation and routing of application message
contents as transmitted via MQSeries. It is optimized for
high-volume, in-storage transformation of messages. It is very
useful in environments where many applications exchange
information, each requiring slightly different message formats.
- Workflow integrates applications for different tasks, into a cohesive business process, instead of focusing on message transformation and routing between applications. MQSeries can automate the execution of activities, such as manual human tasks, user input into an application, or automatic flow of information into a backend transaction. It maintains state information about the process, for routing decisions, monitoring, and auditing purposes.
MQSeries Workflow uses MQSeries messaging for the communication between the MQSeries Workflow clients and servers.
