Overview
IBM COBOL for OS/390 (TM) & VM enhances the COBOL object-oriented programming support on OS/390 that was introduced in IBM COBOL for MVS (R) & VM. IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM is based on IBM COBOL for MVS & VM, including features such as: COBOL 85 Standard language support, intrinsic functions, year 2000 support, interlanguage communications, and the mainframe interactive debug tool Full Function Offering.
IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM Version 2 introduces:
- COBOL support for Dynamic Link Library (DLL) generation for OS/390
applications. Application programmers can use DLLs to split their
applications into smaller units and direct these units to be
loaded only when required. Object-oriented applications can
separate client code and class libraries into separate load
modules. Also, the SOM (TM) kernel and class libraries are
accessed as DLLs.
- COBOL support for SOMobjects (TM) for OS/390 Release 3, which includes support for CORBA 2.0 object services and interoperability.
Intended Customers
- COBOL developers
Key Prerequisites
- To use IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM on the host, one of the
following:
- IBM OS/390 Release 3
- IBM VM/ESA (R) Version 2
- IBM OS/390 Release 3
One-time and monthly license charges apply.

Dynamic Link Library (DLL) Support
In addition to exploiting the runtime libraries available in OS/390 Language Environment (R), COBOL for OS/390 & VM now provides COBOL developers the means to easily build Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs). DLL support allows developers to split their applications into units and to direct these units to be loaded only when required. DLLs provide developers with more flexibility. Programmers can use DLLs to split applications into smaller modules and improve system memory usage. DLLs also offer more flexibility for building, packaging, and redistributing applications.
COBOL for OS/390 & VM provides DLL support for generating DLLs in a way similar to the way OS/2 (R) DLLs are generated. DLLs allow a function call or a variable reference in one load module to use a definition located in another load module at run time. The COBOL DLL support uses the same mechanisms as are used in OS/390 C/C++ and OS/390 SOMobjects, thus enabling object-oriented COBOL applications to smoothly interact with them.
Support for SOMobjects for OS/390 Release 3
IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM Version 2 Release 1 provides COBOL support for SOMobjects for OS/390 Release 3, which includes support for CORBA 2.0 object services and interoperability.
The CORBA 2.0 support in SOMobjects provides the interoperability that will enable this technology to be used to develop distributed applications that can be used in an open, heterogeneous environment. Products will now be able to be built that leverage components residing on any platform regardless of whose CORBA compliant object request broker (ORB) is managing them. This will enable the development of distributed applications. This capability is of particular interest to vendors and very valuable to customers who can now intermix platforms and OO software, thus optimizing their business software investments. The functions and services delivered through CORBA 2.0 interoperability in OS/390 provide a basis for applications to exploit the benefits of operating in the world of network-centric computing.
SOMobjects for OS/390 will support the Object Services of naming, life cycle, persistence, security, externalization, and identity. The Object Naming Service framework is a mechanism by which objects may locate other objects. The Persistence Object Service framework provides a single interface for saving and restoring objects. The persistence service allows the state of an object to be saved onto a persistent medium and then restored later when it is needed. The Object Externalization Service framework allows objects to transform their state into a form that can be processed by external agents. The Object Identity Service framework allows you to compare two objects and see if they are absolutely identical.
COBOL customers who thought they would need to look to other languages as their only option in creating powerful client/server applications with object technology, can now be assured that they can remain with IBM COBOL and still take advantage of these new technologies. Customers can take advantage of the existing skill base in their organizations, preserve the valuable program base they have built up, and still move aggressively to utilize workstations in mission-critical applications.
IBM's COBOL family of products reaches across multiple workstation and host environments with consistent language implementation and support for many databases. IBM COBOL now has offerings on workstation and host environments such as OS/390, MVS, VM, VSE, OS/400 (R), OS/2, AIX (R), Windows (R) 95, and Windows NT. Object-oriented COBOL support is included in the OS/390, MVS, OS/2, AIX, Windows 95, and Windows NT products.
IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM Version 2 Release 1 is intended for customers running on the OS/390 or VM/ESA operating systems. IBM COBOL for MVS & VM Version 1 Release 2 will continue to be available for customers running on the currently supported releases of MVS/ESA (TM).
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
IBM intends to enhance IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM to exploit OS/390 OpenEdition (R) and to provide object-oriented enhancements including performance improvements and the addition of class libraries. Future releases of COBOL for OS/390 & VM will also utilize IBM object server technology as it becomes available on the OS/390 platform. By utilizing these enhancements you will be able to enable your COBOL applications to exploit the open, network-centric computing environment. Also, upon completion of the emerging ANSI/ISO COBOL standard, COBOL for OS/390 & VM will be incrementally extended to implement it.
All statements regarding IBM's future direction and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice and represent goals and objectives only.
