DESCRIPTION
FRAME RELAY BOUNDARY NETWORK NODE ATTACHMENT:
This capability allows PU2.0 and PU2.1 peripheral devices to
connect to the NCP boundary support by means of a frame relay virtual
circuit. Today that connection can only be SDLC or token-ring.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- CONNECTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS
With the use of frame relay and the ability to multiplex multiple
logical connections to many different peripheral devices across a
single physical connection, port connection costs may be reduced. In
addition, other protocols can also be multiplexed across a single
physical connection, allowing consolidation of SNA and non-SNA
physical lines.
END USER PRODUCTIVITY -- INTEROPERABILITY IMPROVEMENTS
This capability provides for improved interoperability of the IBM
3745 with the IBM 3174 and the RouteXpander/2.
IP ENHANCEMENTS:
The IP over token-ring support provides IP communication over
a 3745 attached token-ring IEEE 802.5 local area network. The
token-ring physical media will now support the concurrent routing of
both SNA and IP traffic. In addition, the IP dynamics support allows
the IP routing tables in NCP to be updated dynamically with TCP/IP
Version 2 Release 2.1 (MVS) using SNALINK and the appropriate PTF.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- CONNECTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS
The capability of allowing an additional protocol (IP) to be used
over the token-ring is an added connectivity option customers can
use.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT -- IMPROVED SYSTEM AVAILABILITY
The IP dynamics capability can be used to change routing tables
instead of frequent SYSGENS which may be required today. Thus, the
dynamics capability allows down-time caused by SYSGENS and re-IPLs to
be reduced, thus increasing system availability.
CONTROL BLOCK POOL ENHANCEMENTS:
Control block pool monitoring makes available standard
information about the NCP control block pools and tables which can be
requested periodically from the NCP by a future release of the
NetView (R) Performance Monitor (NPM). NPM can then display the
information for the customers analysis to determine whether
adjustments need to be made to the number of these resources. The
dynamic control block pools capability will dynamically allocate
storage for another control block when no control blocks are
available in the HSBPOOL, the LUDRPOOL, and many other control block
pools.
SYSTEM MANAGEMENT -- IMPROVED SYSTEMS AVAILABILITY
Both the monitoring and the dynamics capabilities enable the customer
to improve system availability. By analysis of the monitoring
function, timely adjustments can be made as required to optimize
storage utilization. Dynamic control block pools greatly enhance
availability by allowing sessions to be established even when the
session control block pools are empty.
APPN ENHANCEMENTS:
The APPN connection network capability allows the composite
network node comprised of VTAM and NCP to model our connection to a
token ring as an APPN connection network. It allows any-to-any
connectivity over the token ring without requiring a system
definition in each node of every other node on the ring, while at the
same time minimizing topology data base impacts. The APPN border
node capability allows multiple APPN networks to interconnect, in the
same way that SNI allows multiple SNA subarea networks to
interconnect. The connection network and border node capabilities
require a future release of VTAM.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT -- IMPROVED SYSTEM AVAILABILITY
The connection network capability allows for the improvement of
system availability by the reduction of system definitions and by
minimizing the traffic flow that occurs with topology data base
updates.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- CONNECTIVITY IMPROVEMENT
Border node provides for the interconnection of multiple APPN
networks, a new and additional connectivity option.
MISCELLANEOUS USABILITY AND RAS ENHANCEMENTS:
These range from extended information being allowed in dial
digits, to token-ring performance improvements and enhancements to
box error records (BERs) to provide additional information for
service personnel.
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
IBM intends to enhance the capabilities of NPM to provide information
about NCP control blocks and tables in conjunction with Advanced
Communication Function/Network Control Program (ACF/NCP) Version 7

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: ACF/NCP Version 7 Release 1 is designed to
operate on any IBM 3745 Communication Controller channel-attached to
a host processor or remotely connected via an SDLC link, IBM
token-ring, X.25, or frame relay through another controller to a host
processor.
The IBM 3745 Communication Controller must have the
appropriate features and microcode level installed when support of
the new IBM 3745 expansion frame, the IBM 3746 Model 900 is
installed. The IBM 3746 Model 900 provides ESCON (TM) attachment
capability for the IBM 3745 as well as additional higher performance
token-ring adapters and communication line adapters.
When the 3746 Model 900 is attached, the NCP Version 7
Release 1 3746 Model 900 feature is required, in addition to the
appropriate usage tier level.
A microcode EC for the 3745 is required for the IP dynamics
capability of ACF/NCP Version 7 Release 1.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: ACF/NCP Version 7 Release 1 is generated
using ACF/System Support Program (ACF/SSP) Version 4 Release 1
(5655-041 MVS, 5654-009 VM, 5686-064 VSE) for MVS/370, MVS/Extended
Architecture (MVS/XA (TM)), MVS/Enterprise Systems Architecture
(MVS/ESA (TM)), VM/System Product (VM/SP), VM/SP High-Performance
Option (VM/SP HPO), VM/XA (TM), VM/ESA (R), VSE/Advanced function
(AF), VSE/SP, and VSE/ESA (TM).
For the MVS/ESA environment, corequisite VTAM support is
provided through ACF/VTAM Version 3 Releases 4.1 or 4.2. ACF/VTAM
Version 4 Release 1 is required for the composite VTAM/NCP APPN
network node capability. For the VM/SP and VM/ESA environments,
corequisite VTAM support is provided through ACF/VTAM Version 3
Release 4.1. For MVS/ESA, VM/ESA, VM/SP and VSE/ESA environments,
VTAM support is also provided through ACF/VTAM Version 3 Releases 3
and 4, but is limited to the functional capabilities of this VTAM
release.
TCP/IP Version 2 Release 2.1 (MVS) with SNALINK and the
appropriate PTF are required for the support of IP dynamics. This
PTF will be available March 31, 1994.
Refer to the "Compatibility" section below for clarification
of specific requirements for VTAM and other related programs.
In addition to providing the generation function for this
release, ACF/SSP provides utilities for loading, dumping, and trace
