DESCRIPTION
USER PRODUCTIVITY
Many users will find productivity is increased with GDDM Version 3
Release 1 compared to Version 2.
o Increased performance
Users will realize a faster response when alphanumerics
(for example, pull-down menus), and in some cases graphics, are
drawn or redrawn on displays. The actual improvements depend on
the system, the display model, and the complexity of the picture.
o Improved usability
Enhanced user control provides easily-accessible
functions.
Enhanced DOS and OS/2 (R) workstation support provides
more function, greater consistency and the opportunity for faster
screen redraw.
The workstation support (for both DOS and OS/2) is now
packaged and installed with the base products and can be
downloaded to the workstation as required (a Distributed Feature
should be ordered for each download).
Revised publications are more comprehensive and a
task-oriented structure makes them easier to use.
o Programming productivity tool
GDDM-REXX is an optional feature of the MVS and VM base
products. The highly interactive nature of REXX means that
solution prototyping is achieved more efficiently and
effectively. Major design elements can be efficiently modeled
and the results envisaged.
This tool can also be used for application development
where programmer productivity is an important consideration.
Furthermore, system programmers will be able to include GDDM
calls to REXX execs and provide value-add to programs by
incorporating graphics, image and alphanumerics.

INVESTMENT PROTECTION
Customers will appreciate that GDDM Version 3 Release 1 protects
their existing investment in GDDM as it is compatible with previous
releases and applications will run unchanged unless certain new
functions are required (see the "Compatibility" section). In
addition, a wider range of devices is now supported.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
GDDM is an integral part of many host-based business solutions and
GDDM Version 3 Release 1 will enhance many applications by providing
value-added functions.
o Enhanced printing and plotting solutions
Support for GL-compatible plotters and printers,
continuous output on roll-feed plotters and improvements to
ADMPRINT provide enhanced output capabilities which can be
usefully incorporated into many solutions.
From the user control or Interactive Chart Utility (ICU)
panels, users are able to send output directly to high quality
page printer queues.
Users can now select from available double-byte character
sets (DBCS) and high quality DBCS fonts are provided.
o Greater programmer flexibility
The inclusion of C/370 and REXX language support in the
base products increases the number of languages available to the
application developer.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
o Improved installation
The packaging of GDDM Version 3 Release 1, the provision
of installation tools and the sample job control language (JCL)
code improves the installation process. The packaging means that
previously available products:
- GDDM-PCLK (2)
- GDDM-OS/2 Link (2)
- GDDM-REXX (3), (4)
are now packaged and installed with the Base products (5).
(2) A Distributed Feature should be ordered for each download (see
the "Ordering" and "Charges" sections).
(3) In Version 2, this was available as a feature for VM only.
(4) If GDDM-REXX is required, it must be ordered as a feature (see
the "Ordering Information" section). Documentation will then be
shipped explaining how to activate the GDDM-REXX support.
(5) GDDM-REXX is not part of the GDDM/VSE base product.
GROWTH ENABLING
The upward compatibility from GDDM Version 2 and the functional
enhancements ensure that the GDDM platform has growth potential with
broader device and application support.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
1. Faster draw and redraw in many display environments.
Instead of erasing and redrawing an entire screen whenever
its content changes, in many cases GDDM Version 3 Release 1
redraws only the affected area. In addition, the number of
circumstances in which a redraw is necessary has been reduced.
On top of these general improvements there are two further
improvements:
o In the DOS environment, graphics are drawn faster with
improved erasing.*
o In the OS/2 environment, windowing performance is much
improved due to faster graphic object redraw.
2. Usability enhancements in the DOS environment.*
Improved GDDM-PCLK support ensures greater consistency
between host graphics and the host alphanumeric session in the
following areas (when using PC/3270 Version 2):
o Keyboard set-up
o Color map
o CECP codepage
o PC/APL character set
o Cursor shape
3. Expansion of hardware supported in the DOS environment.*
GDDM-PCLK supports the following:

o IBM 5202 printer (and compatible devices)
5. Enhancements in the OS/2 environment.
GDDM pictures created in the host and displayed on a
workstation can now be copied into an OS/2 application by
clipping it into the clipboard in metafile format as well as
bitmap.
The new GDDM-OS/2 LINK USER GUIDE is available online.
The user-interface is improved and also conforms to CUA (TM) 89.
The user can control which logical terminals (LTs) have
host graphics support to further enhance performance.
6. CICS (TM) pseudo-conversational mode is supported in the
workstation environments.
This applies to both DOS and OS/2.
7. Ease of migration to workstation environments.

removal of unnecessary repetition)
o Greater detail
o Improvements to key topics such as installation.
GDDM base products publications are available as
BookManager (R) files on both tape and CD-ROM.
10. Improved user control.
The user is now able to control the following
independently of any application:
o Pan & zoom of image without loss of resolution
o Print selected areas of an image
o Position a picture precisely on a hardcopy page by sizing and
rotation (in 90 degree increments).
11. Applications will run unchanged.
Users migrating from Version 2 to Version 3 Release 1 will
not need to change or recompile applications except:
o On VM, the new shared segment test mechanism may not be
picked up unless modules are regenerated. See
"Compatibility".
o Where global TXTLIBs are specified, it is necessary to
specify ADMHLIB for US English.
o To take advantage of certain new functions it will be
necessary to modify applications.
12. Upward compatibility.
There is no loss of function when migrating from Version 2
to Version 3 Release 1 except GDDM-CSPF is not available for use
with GDDM Version 3 Release 1.
13. Wider range of device support.
GDDM Version 3 Release 1 supports the following:
o GL-compatible plotters and printers (using IBM-GL or
equivalent HP-GL)

2.1.0, or later, and is not supported on MVS/370 systems.
o C/370
15. Easier-to-use printing menus.
Applications can develop a list of available printers
which enables a user to select the required printer from a menu
and send the picture to the chosen output device.
The Interactive Chart Utility (ICU) and the user control
print panel have both been updated to take advantage of this
facility.
16. Printing enhancements for ADMPRINT.
o Ability to attach an output device online without the need to
re-initialize GDDM
o Ability to share print queues on MVS
o Plotting margin offsets can now be selected
17. High quality DBCS symbol sets available.
High quality DBCS symbol sets are provided when the Kanji
national language feature is installed.
18. Selection from multiple DBCS symbol sets.
Applications can use more than one DBCS symbol set at a
time. For instance, this would allow the use of both Kanji and
Hanguel on the same page.
19. Direct high quality page printing.

The program features GDDM-PGF, GDDM-GKS, GDDM-IVU and GDDM-IMD
remain at the current prices for GDDM Version 2 Release 3.
ONE-TIME CHARGE: Customers who pay a one-time charge for a licensed
program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no
additional charge. Significant new function may be offered as an
optional feature and charged for separately. If a replacement
program is announced and the customer elects to license the
replacement program, a time-based upgrade credit may apply.
DISTRIBUTED FEATURE ONE-TIME CHARGE: Customers who pay a one-time
charge for additional distributed features may copy machine-readable
program material and documentation. One copy may be made for each
additional distributed feature ordered.
VARIABLE CHARGES: The applicable graduated one-time charge or
graduated monthly license charge will be based on the group of the
designated machine on which the licensed program is licensed for use.
If the program is designated to a processor in a group for which no
charge is listed above, the charge of the next higher group listed
applies.
For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a
higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the then
current charges between the two groups. For downgrades of one-time
charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will be no
adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.
For upgrades or downgrades of monthly license charge licenses,
the monthly license charge applicable to the higher or lower group
will apply.
ENTRY SUPPORT LICENSE/LICENSE TO USE ONE-TIME CHARGE: One-Time
charge authorizes use only on IBM Entry End User/370 Machines.
