| Overview |
The explosion of computer networks and the global reach of the internet are transforming the way businesses operate and use business information, and the era of traditional application islands is rapidly coming to an end. Integrating and enhancing existing systems and processes is at the top of the agenda for many chief information officers, driving organizations to embrace service orientation as the architectural underpinning for modernization. Achieving an effective modernization strategy requires software development capabilities that support new middleware and emerging application architectures.
IBM evolved the capabilities of the IBM Rational® Software Delivery Platform to address this need with an integrated set of tools, methodologies, and best practices, which enable effective governance of the software development process and accelerate the transition to service oriented architecture (SOA).
IBM recognizes that the construction of cross-platform, Web-based and service-oriented solution poses significant technical challenges that require a long and continuous learning process. This issue is not new in our industry. With each computing technology revolution came new technical programming challenges that taxed developers' time in terms of learning and coding intricate systems services interfaces at the expense of time devoted to coding business functionality.
To simplify the implementation of Web and SOA solution, IBM has introduced the Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) programming language as an integral part of the Eclipse-based programming workbench of the IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform. Easier to learn and more productive to use than other languages, EGL complements the breadth and depth of Java and COBOL technology with a simplified and more abstract development paradigm that allows developers of any background skill set to quickly deliver cross-platform, transactional data-centric services, and applications.
EGL provides a way for IT organizations to embrace modern Web and SOA technologies without forcing the entire team of developers to learn and master the low-level intricacies and complexities of Java and SOA programming. EGL is ideal for the business-oriented development teams, who value ease of learning and high productivity, need to deliver modern applications and services but cannot afford the time, cost and risk to transform each developer into a Java and Object Oriented expert.
IBM Rational Business Developer provides a comprehensive and powerful development workbench for the EGL language.

| Description |
IBM Rational Business Developer delivers the latest technology tools to support the definition and testing and debugging of EGL applications and services. It also offers a generation engine that transforms the EGL source into Java or COBOL code optimized for deployment to a broad variety of application hosting environments including J2EE servers (WebSphere®, Apache Tomcat, i5/OS Integrated Application Server, and so on) and traditional transactional systems such as IBM System z CICS® and Information Management System (IMS) or System i i5OS.
EGL hides the details of the target execution platforms and associated middleware, freeing developers to focus on the business problem rather than on the underlying implementation technologies. Developers who have little or no experience with Java and Web technologies can use EGL to create enterprise-class services and applications quickly and easily. Developers with little or no experience with mainframe programming can quickly create highly optimized System z or System i services and applications.
IBM Rational Business Developer V7.1 is the replacement product for IBM Rational Business Developer Extension V7.0. In this new release, the product is significantly enhanced and repackaged to install as a stand-alone product and no longer as an extension of a separate base product.
The new product functions further strengthen the platform coverage, the support for an SOA and for business integration solutions, the usability and versatility of the EGL language, and provide a conversion path for IBM VisualAge Generator users.
IBM Rational Business Developer addresses the full spectrum of modern business application requirements including development of:
- Business services: The language includes the built-in notion of "service" allowing you to create and invoke services in an extremely simple and straightforward way, and to permeate systems architecture with service orientation.
- Web applications: Tight integration of EGL with Java Server Faces (JSF) framework and JSF tooling enables programmers to create Web applications in a simple and productive way, without the need to know either Java or the details of the JSF framework.
- Portlets: EGL JSF Web applications can also be deployed to WebSphere Portal Server, and EGL provides built-in functions to interface the portal framework, including support for inter-portlet communications.
- Reports: EGL integration with the BIRT, an open source reporting engine, allows you to create professional reports.
- Batch systems: The language includes the built-in notion of "batch program", which can be generated to run without end-user interaction; for example, to produce reports or to batch database loads and updates.
- Text user-interface applications: To facilitate migration of existing systems to a modern development environment, EGL includes the ability to create traditional character-based (green-screen, such as 5250 and 3270) user interfaces and relative programming constructs. This capability can also be used for new development if needed.
IBM Rational Business Developer V7.1 delivers the following enhancements in addition to the existing capabilities of IBM Rational Business Developer Extension V7.0:
- Support for MQ Series: Message queues can now be accessed using EGL language abstractions.
- Support for IMS/DB (DL/I): Hierarchical databases can now be accessed using EGL language abstractions: IMS data can be accessed both during the debugging within the developer workbench, as well as from the deployed code.
- IMS/TM support: Generated COBOL can now be deployed to the System z IMS/TM transaction manager.
- I5/OS Integrated Application Server support: Generated Java Web applications can now be deployed to the i5/OS Integrated Application Server.
- I5/OS Data Queues and Data Areas support: These resources can now be accessed through the use of new EGL functions.
- CSV files support: Comma separated value (CSV) files can now be accessed using EGL language abstractions.
- Text User Interface applications: Language elements and tools allow you to write traditional 5250 or 3270 character based user interface programs.
- Web Transaction support: To facilitate migration of VisualAge Generator Web applications EGL now supports the development and generation of applications using the VisualAge Generator Web Transaction feature.
- BIRT integration: EGL integration with BIRT, an open source reporting engine, enables creation of professional reports.
- Portlets support: EGL JSF Web applications can now be deployed to WebSphere Portal Server, and EGL provides built-in functions to interface the Portal framework, including support for inter-portlet communications.
- Enhanced security: EGL applications can now include user sign-on capability to restrict access to resources only to authorized users, through new EGL support for access to JNDI/LDAP directory data and enablement of both container-managed and application-managed security.
- JSF support enhancements: IBM Rational Business Developer 7.1 includes several editor usability enhancements, the use of JSF AJAX-enabled type-ahead fields, and the use of LDAP security JSF support.
- EGL language enhancements: These include the use of XOR operator, the ability to pass and return EGL records on function invocations and other minor enhancement.
- EGL invocation from native Java: IBM Rational Business Developer now generates Java wrappers that enables EGL invocation from native Java.
- ILE service procedures invocation: EGL can now invoke native i5/OS ILE service procedures.
- Usability enhancements: A new project wizard and numerous source editor and debugger improvements (such as automated formatting, improved content assist, dynamic error markers, code refactoring, "jump to line" during debugging, dynamic code modification during debugging) significantly simplify the EGL development experience.
- Bi-directional text enhancements: A number of enhancements enable development and deployment of applications that require bi-directional text support.
- Built-in tools: Tools allow for automated conversion of VisualAge Generator code to EGL.
IBM Rational Business Developer generates COBOL code that can be deployed to the following environments:
- z/OS® V1.6, or later: batch, CICS, IMS/TM Programs deployed to any of these platforms require the IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for zSeries® V6.0.1 product
