Description

In order to integrate business applications and processes, you must first connect your disparate application and information assets into a coherent framework. This connectivity is critical to leverage these assets in new and flexible business service applications, and to extend and grow the return on investment in those solutions. Elimination of ongoing manual coding and custom interface maintenance can enhance the business flexibility of your IT infrastructure. In "smart" SOA solutions, new business service applications use WebSphere Adapters to integrate multiple enterprise business application suites, an ESB, business process server, or data transformation engines. WebSphere Adapters provide a standard interface to enable these applications, insulating them from the details of information storage and retrieval. Adapters participate in an SOA by providing these access services:

  • Service enablement — Provide a standard interface to proprietary implementations
  • Service discovery — Browse, select, and generate service descriptions from the application repository
  • Event capture — Detect and publish application events
  • Prebuilt or build your own — Delivers a range of ready-to-go adapters and toolkit to generate your own custom adapters

WebSphere Adapters V6.1 provides Java™ Enterprise Edition (JEE) Connector Architecture (JCA) 1.5-compatible adapters for:

  • E-mail
  • FTP
  • Flat Files
  • JDBC
  • SAP Software
  • Siebel Business applications
  • Oracle E-Business Suite
  • JD Edwards EnterpriseOne
  • PeopleSoft enterprise applications

Enhanced Architecture WebSphere Adapters V6.1 introduces an enhanced Data Exchange Service Provider Interface (DESPI) which enables their use within the wide range of products in the WebSphere portfolio, as well as provides future opportunities for other products in the broader IBM portfolio to enhance their offerings with WebSphere Adapters, where they do not currently have this functionality.

iSeries platform is supported for the following WebSphere adapters.

  • E-mail
  • FTP
  • Flat Files
  • JDBC
  • SAP Software
  • JD Edwards EnterpriseOne

Improved ease of use of adapter tooling

WebSphere Adapters V6.1 enhances adapter configuration by implementing improvements recommended by current adapter customers:

  • Enhanced Enterprise Services Discovery wizard speeds up discovery
  • Reduced number of steps needed to complete adapter builds
  • Context-sensitive help
  • Simplified access to context-sensitive documentation

WebSphere Adapter V6.1 detail

WebSphere Adapter for E-mail V6.1 enables the exchange of business objects with a variety of applications as e-mail message attachments. The adapter checks mailboxes on mail servers for applicable e-mail messages and converts these messages and attachments to business objects. SMTP, POP3, and IMAP, with full access to headers and message/attachments, are supported, as well as RFC 822 format.

The ability to specify JCA bindings for XML or custom data is supported. This JCA resource adapter can be used with applications which do not provide programmable or service interfaces, and for which integration at the data tier is impractical. The adapter implements the Enterprise MetaData Discovery (EMD) specification to facilitate the generation of service descriptions and configuration artifacts for the adapter.

V6.1 enhancements

  • Support for SMTP, IMAP and POP3 over SSL
  • iSeries support
  • Updates to foundation classes

WebSphere Adapter for FTP V6.1 enables integration with applications using FTP to send and receive files to a remote FTP server. It supports the breadth of FTP client operations (for example, get, put, and command scripts), FTPS Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), polling for new files, and connections to host and distributed platforms. Also provides the ability to specify JCA bindings for XML or custom data. This JCA resource adapter can be used with applications which do not provide programmable or service interfaces, and for which integration at the data tier is impractical. The adapter implements Enterprise Metadata Discovery (EMD) to facilitate the generation of service descriptions and configuration artifacts for the adapter.

V6.1 enhancements

  • File parsing and data transformation for outbound retrieve
  • Parameter substitution for FTP script file
  • iSeries support
  • Updates to foundation classes

WebSphere Adapter for Flat Files V6.1 enables integration with applications, which provide a basic flat file interface. This adapter can be used with applications which do not provide programmable or service interfaces, and for which integration at the data tier is impractical. This JCA resource adapter facilitates the bidirectional exchange of any type of text or binary file, and provides the ability to write to new files, append to or overwrite existing files, poll a directory for new files to deliver to the server, retrieve target files, list the files in a directory, and delete target files. The adapter implements EMD to facilitate the generation of service descriptions and configuration artifacts for the adapter. Other features include:

  • Delimiter record splitting and custom record splitting,
  • Multiple event directories support
  • Event option to deliver file reference only, rather than the file itself
  • Ability to specify JCA bindings for XML or custom data

V6.1 enhancements

  • Data transformation on outbound retrieve
  • Event sequencing during outbound and continuing from last sequence
  • Generate unique file names on Create and Append
  • iSeries support
  • Updates to foundation classes

WebSphere Adapter for JDBC V6.1 enables object-oriented integration with applications through the data tier. This adapter can be used with applications which provide specific interface logic within the data tier or those that do not provide programmable or service interfaces. This JCA resource adapter integrates with database management systems through the exchange of relational data including tables, views, and stored procedures, and it provides comprehensive support for create, update, delete, and retrieve operations.

The adapter also provides a polling event mechanism to detect and deliver events from any application based on a relational database. The adapter implements EMD to generate service descriptions and configuration artifacts from database tables, views, and stored procedures. The adapter supports any JDBC V2.0, or later driver for features outlined in the adapter user guide. Support includes:

  • Prepared statement caching
  • Support for wrapper objects
  • New property DriverConnectionProperties at managed connection factory level
  • Support for globalized data types

V6.1 enhancements

  • User-specified Insert/Update/Delete SQL
  • iSeries support

WebSphere Adapter for SAP Software V6.1 enables bidirectional integration with SAP applications running on the SAP Web Application Server V6.20-7.00, as well as with any SAP R/3 V4.x application. This JCA resource adapter leverages Java APIs to access BAPI change parameters through RFC, and also to provide the bidirectional exchange of IDocs through ALE.

The adapter implements the EMD specification to generate service descriptions and configuration artifacts for BAPIs, RFCs, and IDocs. SAP applications can call into the WebSphere Adapter for SAP software for synchronous processing as if it were another SAP application. The EMD generates the appropriate configurations and the adapter services RFC calls from SAP applications and provides a response to the originating application. IDOC service artifacts can now be generated by loading the definitions from either a file or an SAP System. Bidirectional communication via qRFC protocol with the SAP system is supported.
