Product positioning

The WebSphere family of products includes software to meet your diverse integration needs as they span varying programming models, qualities of service, and multiple data types. Whether you are looking to exchange a limited amount of data or implement an enterprisewide SOA, you can meet your current and future needs with WebSphere software.

WebSphere Message Broker makes full use of the transport and connectivity options from WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Application Server. It offers additional routing and transformation capabilities to implement or extend an ESB.

  • WebSphere Application Server is the leading J2EE application server and development environment. It includes a built-in JMS engine for messaging between J2EE applications.
  • WebSphere MQ, available on more than 80 platform configurations, is the core of application integration connectivity, and integrates many differing platforms, systems, and applications. It delivers heterogeneous messaging, extending your ESB with assured, reliable message delivery.
  • WebSphere Message Broker with Rules and Formatter Extension offers the full level of function provided by WebSphere Message Broker with additional support for the Rules and Formatter capability from New Era of Networks. This provides continuity for clients who require the use of IBM Rules and Formatter nodes.
  • WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition enhances WebSphere MQ with end-to-end, application-level data protection features. It enables enterprise-wide, remote management of security policies on your MQ network and can be deployed to existing production environments without changes to existing WebSphere MQ applications.
  • WebSphere Partner Gateway is an environment for creating and managing supply chain partners integrated to your business. It also supports sending and receiving multiple data types over multiple protocol and transport layers. Whether you need to connect to just one or two key supply chain partners or define a network of potentially thousands of partners, editions of this offering can meet your needs.

These product extensions are available from

Market-leading application integration software from IBM, including WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Message Broker, helps you:

  • Quickly and economically address business integration issues
  • Become more agile and take rapid advantage of new business opportunities
  • Stay flexible
  • Maintain customer orientation
  • Gain competitive position advantage

WebSphere Message Broker enables you to maximize flexibility as an integrated On Demand Business by:

  • Leveraging existing resources much more widely than was part of their original design
  • Improving speed of implementation of changes to applications to respond to new opportunities, ensuring that application design and changes are focused on business logic rather than infrastructure details
  • Anticipating and rapidly implementing IT changes as your business changes

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) and enterprise service bus (ESB): In an SOA, a connectivity layer often referred to as an ESB optimizes information distribution between service requesters and service providers. Each enterprise can deploy its own unique ESB, reflecting how far it has advanced toward becoming an On Demand Business.

As key members of the IBM WebSphere software portfolio, WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Message Broker enable you to begin deploying or widening the deployment of your ESB today.

These programs help maximize the value of your IT investment by broadening the range of environments this connectivity layer can reach, such as hardware and operating system platforms and non-standards-based programming models as well as J2EE and .NET.

For connecting these diverse programming models there needs to be proven delivery of messages and data between the applications. The proven delivery mechanisms of WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Application Server can extend the standards-based enterprise service bus with reliable connectivity throughout the enterprise. WebSphere Application Server messaging resources offer an optimal Java Message Service (JMS) implementation for use with J2EE-hosted applications. WebSphere MQ seamlessly extends those messaging resources to non-J2EE environments to integrate with many systems across more than 80 platform configurations.

WebSphere Message Broker adds services such as message routing, transformation enrichment, and support for a range of message distribution options and protocols to improve their flexibility and performance. You can integrate many types of applications on a wide range of systems, exchanging their data together in real time.

WebSphere software delivers integration capabilities that enable you to begin reaping the benefits of SOA with connectivity and integration through an ESB today.

IBM can help you to grow project-by-project toward an On Demand Business. WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Application Server, and WebSphere Message Broker play a pivotal role in creating SOAs and will continue to do so as IBM delivers enhanced capabilities to accelerate the deployment of an integration infrastructure that spans the entire IT ecosystem.

Charge metrics definitions:

Value Unit: A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit): A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Sub-capacity processor (Value Unit): For programs eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for sub-capacity terms or the program's license information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products: Sub-capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage web site

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing: To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements, and reporting, refer to Software Announcement 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.

If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process.) You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at

Limited warranty applies: Yes

Warranty: IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known Program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. Consult the IBM Software Support Guide for further information at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

  • For programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
  • For programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off CoD software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Authorization for use on home/portable computer: The program may be stored on the primary machine and another machine, provided that the program is not in active use on both machines at the same time. You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.

The various program-unique terms set forth or referred to apply to the program and to its components as identified below, and are in addition to, and may modify, those of the IBM International Program License Agreement.

1. Charging and license use management

Charges for authorized use of the program are based on processor Value Units. The use of the program on any server machine requires 100 Value Units to be acquired (from IBM or an IBM Business Partner) for each processor or symmetric multiprocessor contained in the server machine on which any copy of the program is to run. Value Units are required for every server machine on which the Broker component of the program is installed. You are also required to obtain a corresponding number of additional Value Units if the program installation is moved to a server machine with a greater number of processors, or if any additional processors are added to the server machine on which the program is installed. Failure to comply with requirement for the appropriate number of Value Units will invalidate the terms of this license.

On distributed platforms, License Use Management software is used to monitor compliance. You should retain your original product and all Passport Advantage documents as PoE.

No separate server authorizations are required to license any other component part of the program.

Specific restrictions also apply to various components of the program, as described in the following.

2. DataDirect ODBC Driver Manager components

Portions of this program are copyrighted by DataDirect Technologies, 1991 — 2003.

3. DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition

Limited use license DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition: DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition includes portions of DB2 Enterprise Server Edition V9.1. You are authorized to install and use one copy of this program only in association with your licensed use of WebSphere Message Broker for the storage and management of data used and generated by the other IBM program, and not for other data management purposes. DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition is to be used only by the internal components of the program. For example, DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition can be used as a repository for configuration information generated by WebSphere Message Broker and cannot be used to build or extend custom applications that store business data; this license does not permit inbound connections to the database from other applications for queries or report generation. You are not authorized to install any separately purchasable features that are available for DB2 unless You purchase a fully licensed version of DB2.

If you use the program with a separately licensed DB2 V9 data server, the license terms of that data server take precedence over these terms.

The supplied limited-use license of DB2 can be installed on a separate server from the Broker Runtime, subject to the processor Value Unit count of the server that runs the DB2 instance being less than or equal to the processor Value Unit count of the purchased licenses of WebSphere Message Broker. The installation and use of this DB2 license must remain restricted to the information related to the deployed WebSphere Message Broker server runtimes.

You are allowed to deploy the supplied license of DB2 on a separate server from the Broker, to aid the centralized management of your deployment and to assist in your high availability configuration. Note, however, that DB2 must still be used only with data generated by, and used by, the Broker. DB2 must not be used with other user-generated data.

Your use of the DB2 and DB2 Run-time Client components is subject to the terms and conditions of the license agreement which accompany the components except as limited in this license. The DB2 components may not be used for any other purpose. Contact your DB2 reseller if your needs exceed this license agreement to obtain a full DB2 and DB2 Run-Time Client program.

4. Derby SDK

The program includes an embedded version of Derby SDK V10.2 (or components of Derby SDK V10.2). Your use of Derby SDK includes the right to copy, modify, prepare derivative works of, and embed Derby SDK into applications you develop, and to redistribute Derby SDK, as modified, as part of those applications, provided that you: (1) agree to defend, hold harmless and indemnify IBM from and against any and all claims, liabilities, damages, expenses and costs arising out of or in connection with your use or distribution of the program, modifications thereof, or your application program(s), and (2) distribute your applications under a license that states (i) that IBM (or any suppliers of code included in your application) assumes no responsibility and extend(s) no warranties covering its (their) code, (ii) disclaims implied warranties and any indemnities for the IBM (or any suppliers') code, and (iii) extends to IBM (or any suppliers of code included in your application) the same cumulative limits of liability protections that you provide for yourself in your license. Each copy or partial copy of Derby SDK, or any modifications thereof, must include a copyright notice as follows:

"(C) Copyright (your company name) (year). Portions of this code are derived from an IBM Program. (C) Copyright IBM Corp. 1997-2004. All rights reserved."

5. Message Brokers Toolkit

The Message Brokers Toolkit included with the program includes a copy of IBM Rational® Application Developer (RAD) and WebSphere Eclipse Platform components. You are authorized to use Rational Application Developer and WebSphere Eclipse Platform components only with the Message Brokers Toolkit, and not for other purposes. (To use Rational Application Developer and WebSphere Eclipse Platform components for any other purpose, you must acquire a separate (unrestricted) PoE that authorizes such use of the Rational Application Developer and WebSphere Eclipse Platform software product.)

6. Rules and Formatter

The WebSphere Message Broker with Rules and Formatter Extension includes certain "Rules and Formatter" material supplied under license by Sybase Inc. ("R+F Code").

The following apply in respect of the R+F Code:

You may not assign or transfer the R+F Code to any other end user;

Sybase Inc. DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES WITH RESPECT TO THE USE OF THE R+F CODE INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE; and

The aggregate liability of Sybase Inc to you for all claims relating to the R+F Code shall not exceed the amount paid by You for the Program.

7. WebSphere Adapters

The program contains the following WebSphere Adapters packaged as native message processing nodes:

  • WebSphere Adapter for SAP Software V6.1
  • WebSphere Adapter for Siebel Business Applications V6.1
  • WebSphere Adapter for PeopleSoft Enterprise V6.1

You are authorized to use the Adapter nodes on the same machine as the program only in association with your licensed use of the program. You are authorized to use the Adapter nodes only for "unit testing" with a test run-time environment provided in the program. For the purpose of these program-unique terms, "unit testing" consists of testing message flows that use one or more Adapter nodes to connect to their related applications to confirm the message flows function appropriately. Refer to the Unit testing section.

Any other use of the Adapter nodes with the program requires a separate authorization, acquired either on a per-application-instance or per-establishment basis.

With a "per-establishment" authorization for an WebSphere Adapter, you are permitted to deploy an unlimited number of copies of the licensed adapter components to multiple brokers owned or leased by you that are located at a single physical site, including the surrounding campus and satellite offices. With a per-application-instance authorization for an WebSphere Adapter, you are permitted to deploy an unlimited number of copies of the licensed adapter components to one broker.

8. WebSphere MQ

WebSphere MQ (distributed environments only): The program includes a limited-use license in respect of WebSphere MQ V6.0. For each Proof of Entitlement, you are authorized to install and use WebSphere MQ V6.0 in association with your use of the program components, as follows:

  • For every deployment of the Broker Runtime component, you are authorized to install and use one license of WebSphere MQ V6.0 in accordance with the terms and conditions of that program.
  • You are authorized to install and use one WebSphere MQ V6.0 license for each deployment of the Configuration Manager and User Name Server components. This license must be used only for messages generated by the components of the Program (the Configuration Manager and User Name Server), and not for any other purpose (to use WebSphere MQ V6.0 for any other purpose, you must acquire a separate (unrestricted) PoE that authorizes such use of a WebSphere MQ V6.0 software product).

9. WebSphere MQ Everyplace

The program includes a copy of WebSphere MQ Everyplace V2.0.2 (WebSphere MQ Everyplace). For each PoE, you are authorized to install and use WebSphere MQ Everyplace in association with your use of the program, as follows:

  • You are authorized to install a maximum of one copy of WebSphere MQ Everyplace for use with the program.
  • You are authorized to use WebSphere MQ Everyplace only with messages generated for the program, and not for other purposes. (To use WebSphere MQ Everyplace for any other purpose, you must acquire a separate (unrestricted) PoE that authorizes such use of a WebSphere MQ Everyplace software product.)

10. LPEX V3.2

IBM has made certain modifications to the Eclipse Code for the LPEX component, which modifications are referred to as the "Eclipse Platform Classes". The Eclipse Platform Classes were not contributed back to the Eclipse Foundation because they are unique to this Program and its LPEX component. The source code for the Eclipse Platform Classes can be obtained from IBM via an e-mail request to daniel@ca.ibm.com.

11. Microsoft code

The program contains some redistributable software from Microsoft Corporation. In addition to other terms and conditions stated in this License Agreement, you may not reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble such software, except and only to the extent that it is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MICROSOFT OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF PROFITS OR CONFIDENTIAL OR OTHER INFORMATION, FOR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, FOR PERSONAL INJURY, FOR LOSS OF PRIVACY, FOR FAILURE TO MEET ANY DUTY INCLUDING OF GOOD FAITH OR OF REASONABLE CARE, FOR NEGLIGENCE, AND FOR ANY OTHER PECUNIARY OR OTHER LOSS WHATSOEVER) ARISING OUT OF OR IN ANY WAY RELATED TO THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE, THE PROVISION OF OR FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT OR OTHER SERVICES, INFORMATION, SOFTWARE AND RELATED CONTENT THROUGH THE SOFTWARE OR OTHERWISE ARISING OUT OF USE OF THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IN THE EVENT OF THE FAULT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), MISREPRESENTATION, STRICT LIABILITY, BREACH OF CONTRACT OR BREACH OF WARRANTY OF MICROSOFT OR ANY SUPPLIER, AND EVEN IF MICROSOFT OR ANY SUPPLIER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

NOTWITHSTANDING ANY DAMAGES THAT YOU MIGHT INCUR FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ALL DAMAGES REFERENCED HEREIN AND ALL DIRECT OR GENERAL DAMAGES IN CONTRACT OR ANYTHING ELSE), THE ENTIRE LIABILITY OF MICROSOFT AND ANY OF ITS SUPPLIERS AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY HEREUNDER SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE ACTUAL DAMAGES YOU INCUR IN REASONABLE RELIANCE ON THE SOFTWARE UP TO THE AMOUNT ACTUALLY PAID BY YOU FOR THE SOFTWARE OR US$5.00. THE FOREGOING LIMITATIONS, EXCLUSIONS AND DISCLAIMERS SHALL APPLY TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, EVEN IF ANY REMEDY FAILS ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE.

12. Unit testing

A. For distributed platforms

The program license authorizes multiple developers to install one copy of the Broker Runtime, the Toolkit, WebSphere MQ and DB2 on a single Microsoft Windows machine or a single Linux machine running on Intel® per developer, for purposes of "unit testing." "Unit testing" is limited to testing of configurations written or generated by such developer to confirm that such configuration functions as designed. Such authorized "unit testing" DOES NOT include any of the following:

1. Testing message flows on servers separate from the developer's machine. The developer may create local message flows that connect to remote servers hosting non-production applications and services in a unit-test environment.

2. Exchanging messages with any production application or system.

3. Simulating production workloads for the purpose of testing scalability of any code, application, or system in an integration test environment.

B. For the z/OS® platform

The program license authorizes multiple developers to install one copy of the Broker Runtime and the Toolkit on a single Microsoft Windows machine or a single Linux machine running on Intel per developer for purposes of "unit testing." "Unit testing" is limited to testing of configurations written or generated by such developer to confirm that such configuration functions as designed.

13. Use of components on separate machines

The program consists of several components:

  • Broker Runtime
  • Configuration Manager
  • User Name Server
  • Database Manager
  • Message Broker Toolkit
Each such component may be installed on only a single machine, at any one time except for the Message Broker Toolkit, which may be installed on multiple machines provided that they are all used in conjunction with the same broker machine.

You may use the program's Configuration Manager on the same server machine as the Broker Runtime component, or on one Microsoft Windows or Linux x86 machine.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
