IBM SAN Volume Controller continues to add practical business value with V4.2, which adds new copy
service and volume management functionality while expanding the breadth of coverage for
interoperability of the SVC solution and maintaining firmware currency.
V4.2 copy services enhancements
-
Multi-target FlashCopy capability allows creation of up to 16 target vdisks for any source vdisk.
Each relationship is individually controllable. This allows simultaneous multiple actions against
the same dataset (using different copies) and facilitates maintenance of multiple versions of the
same dataset. This capability can help enhance business continuity solutions implementing the
FlashCopy function.
-
Per I/O group limit for FlashCopy and Remote Copy mappings is increased to 40 TB each from 16 TB
each a 150% increase. This results in support for a total capacity of up to 160 TB each for
FlashCopy functions and for combined Metro Mirror and Global Mirror, for an 8-node SVC cluster.
-
The number of allowed active FlashCopy relationships per cluster is increased from 2048 to 3855,
enabling more extensive use of FlashCopy functionality.
V4.2 volume management enhancements
Role-based security assignment capabilities are enhanced by two new roles that expand administrator
capability to control task access at the cluster level. The role of "CopyOperator" provides tasks
to operate (start/stop) FlashCopy and Remote Copy, while the role of "Monitor" enables actions such
as "view" commands. This combination gives administrators increased flexibility to assign more
varied access levels.
V4.2 performance enhancements
SAN Volume Controller V4.2 is designed to provide substantially improved performance and
scalability, depending on workload, when installed on new hardware platform IBM System Storage SAN
Volume Controller Storage Engine 2145-8G4.
Additional V4.2 operating environments
SAN Volume Controller now supports more heterogeneous data center environments with the addition of
interoperability support for hosts running:
-
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 on ia32 (x86) and ia32e (x64) platforms
-
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 on System p
-
SUSE Enterprise Linux 9 on ia64
Additional V4.2 storage systems support
Support for the following storage systems and devices is added to SAN Volume Controller Storage

V4.2 reliability and serviceability enhancements
-
Fast node reset Fast node reset is intended to bring the SVC node back into operation following
a software failure before a host system realizes that an interruption has occurred.
-
Direct e-mail notification This serviceability feature allows SVC to be configured to send
notification e-mails directly in response to error conditions. This eliminates the need for
external agents, such as IBM Director, to send e-mails in response to SNMP traps. SVC will continue
to support generation of SNMP traps.
-
Inventory reporting This allows periodic automatic reporting (via e-mail) of SVC information to
IBM. This information may be used for service and support.
V4.2 enhanced user interface
The SAN Volume Controller V4.2 GUI has several new features:
-
A wizard that allows the migration of vdisk extents between mdisks.
-
Functions added so that cluster names are displayed when user signs off (especially useful in
multi-cluster environments).
-
Image mode vdisk creation wizard is enhanced for better usability.
-
Function added that allows SCSI LUN ID to be assigned to each vdisk.
-
Users are now warned when modifying cluster fabric speed, to prevent any unforeseen consequences.
-
Filtering tags are now cleared for pre-filtering vdisk listing by host attachments.
-
Default actions are now associated with tables.

Performance considerations:
SAN Volume Controller V4.2 is designed to provide substantially
improved performance and scalability, depending on workload, when
installed on the new hardware platform, IBM System Storage SAN Volume
Controller Storage Engine 2145-8G4.
Planning information
Planning considerations for the required IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Storage Engines
apply. Refer to the announcements listed in the
Reference information
section and to the
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller: Planning Guide
(GA32-0551).
Fee-based storage services are also available. For details, refer to the
Storage services
section.
Also, attaching IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server, IBM TotalStorage or System Storage
DS6000, or IBM TotalStorage or System Storage DS8000 series storage systems in conjunction with the
SVC Solution requires consideration of individual establishment needs. This configuration can
create a Logical Unit that is larger than a single RAID rank, and also allows pooling of unused
space into Logical Units within the SAN made visible through SAN Volume Controller Software. These
are very positive potential advantages for storage efficiency and consolidated management; however,
this configuration would also require that advanced copy services be performed through the SAN
Volume Controller Software. In some cases, this may not be advantageous over performing these
services at the ESS, DS6000, or DS8000 disk array level. Relative merits and trade-offs of
attaching ESS, DS6000, or DS8000 under the SAN Volume Controller should be discussed with your IBM
Consulting Services representative or Storage Services representative.
Customer responsibilities:
Planning for and provision of the power and environmental support of the required IBM System
Storage SAN Volume Controller, including its Storage Engines, is a customer responsibility.
Refer to the announcements listed in the
Reference information
section.
Planning considerations for IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller are listed in the
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller: Planning Guide
(GA32-0551). Refer to the
Publications
section.
Service support for the customer-provided server host and its Windows operating system on which the
sofware-only Master Console Kit (feature #5809) is installed is a customer responsibility.
New SAN Volume Controller customers who install SVC 4.2 Software shipped after
June 8, 2007, and before July 27, 2007, must either provide an independent
server and software to handle service messages or download and install IBM Director for this
function on the same server that hosts the Master Console.
Entitled SAN Volume Controller customers may download IBM Director without additional charge from
Customers with 5639-VC4 site licenses are responsible to combine the
total terabytes (TB) managed for each function from individual SAN Volume

Limited warranty applies:
Yes
Limited warranty:
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified
operating environment it will conform to its specifications. The
warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does
not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that
IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the
results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on
known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at
no additional charge. Consult the IBM Software Support Guide for further
information at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the
original licensee acquires the program ("Warranty Period").
Program technical support:
Technical support of a program product will be available for a
minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as
your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows
you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for
product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and
operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you
with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will
be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with
12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM,
including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact
your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be
available for a fee.
Money-back guarantee:
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are
the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for
it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its
PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the
program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for
instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM
International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your
first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any
of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this
term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already
acquired and in use by you.
Authorization for use on home/portable computer:
You may not copy and use this program on another computer without
paying additional license fees.

IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement
Passport Advantage applies:
Yes, and through the Passport Advantage Web site at
Usage restriction:
Yes. This program is licensed on a per-terabyte (with cumulative
tiers) site-wide capacity basis. (Refer to the
Ordering information
section for information on charges for this program.) Users may only install this program on IBM
System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, 2145-8F2, and 2145-4F2 Storage Engines, or
subsequent IBM replacements of these. Customers are licensed to use this program only to manage
storage capacity within a single site, and only for the amount of storage capacity within that site
for which they have received proper authorization from IBM. Customers must obtain a separate
license for any additional sites within which they want to use SAN Volume Controller Software V4
(5639-VC4) and obtain separate capacity authorizations for each such site. The 5639-VC4 site
license subsumes and supersedes all individual 5639-VC1, 5639-VC2, 5639-VCT, and 5639-VC3 licenses
previously in effect at that site.
A customer's right to use the IBM FlashCopy for SAN Volume Controller and Metro/Global Mirror for
SAN Volume Controller features of this program is also limited to the amount of authorizations
obtained from IBM. The authorizations for FlashCopy and for Metro/Global Mirror, including that for
multiple FlashCopy targets, cannot exceed the total capacity authorization for the amount of managed
storage on all clusters within the site. Use of the Metro/Global Mirror feature between clusters
located in different sites requires separate authorization for each site. This program is only
supported for use with host servers, storage subsystems, and SAN configurations identified by IBM as
being supported for attachment to the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller. This program is
provided together with code provided under separate license agreements, including, but not limited
to, open source license agreements.
Software Maintenance applies:
Yes. Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical
Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support
for the product announced in this announcement is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of
the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity
by providing voice or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program
acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal
option.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine,
short-duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides
assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS)
technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your
IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1
assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software
Support Guide at
Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and
development of applications, your use of programs in other than their
specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which
IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
