| Description |
Extends infrastructure optimization and dynamic operations across a broader range of application servers and execution environments
For operational efficiency and consistency, organizations have typically centered their application infrastructures on standard platforms such as WebSphere Application Server. However, many organizations today are expanding their application infrastructures to better incorporate innovative server-side scripting technologies such as PHP and to complement their infrastructures with open source Java application servers. This is especially true as service-oriented architectures (SOA) continue to drive business services composed of multiple application components.
These environments offer organizations the ability to streamline their Web development and presence, and to gain flexibility in application enablement and deployment, yet introduce a set of challenges related to supporting an expanded application infrastructure footprint. These challenges often include the ability to:
- Optimize infrastructure investment; dynamically allocate finite infrastructure resources to when and where they're needed, in real time and according to business policies
- Support a diverse set of application environments in a consistent way and with mission-critical qualities of service
Previous versions of WebSphere Extended Deployment have concentrated on delivering intelligent, goals-directed workload management, infrastructure optimization, and operational management primarily on the WebSphere Application Server platform. WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.0 introduced traffic shaping and prioritization of workload requests to application servers other than WebSphere categorized as generic endpoints and aggregated as generic server clusters.
With WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1, IBM significantly expands these capabilities to extend dynamic operations, infrastructure virtualization and intelligent application placement to a broad range of application infrastructure resources (PHP, BEA WebLogic, JBoss, Apache Tomcat, and WebSphere Application Server Community Edition). In addition, organizations can administer these application infrastructure resources in a consistent way utilizing an enhanced operational management framework.
For both WebSphere and other application environments, organizations can dynamically manage workload according to service policy, prioritize and govern application flow control to avoid overload conditions, and intelligently place applications utilizing WebSphere Extended Deployment's dynamic clusters.
To enable this, WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 offers the following new features:
- Includes automatic detection and configuration of PHP servers
- Facilities to easily define and register BEA WebLogic, JBoss, Apache Tomcat, and WebSphere Application Server Community Edition application servers and their associated applications via server templates.
- A CustomHTTPServer template to allow placement and routing to server types for which a pre-configured template has not been provided for (for example, SAP NetWeaver).
- Enhanced dynamic clusters. Membership of a node in a dynamic cluster is automatically managed by a membership policy based on server type and capabilities specified by an administrator.
- Includes expansion of the health management framework, policies and actions to PHP servers, and BEA WebLogic, JBoss, Apache Tomcat, and WebSphere Application Server Community Edition application servers.
In addition, to further aid configuration and administration of a heterogeneous application infrastructure environment, WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 delivers both external configuration and external log viewing services for non-WebSphere server types:
- External Configuration Service allows configuration files to be easily referenced when creating and defining servers in WebSphere Extended Deployment and provides a mechanism to manage these servers from a central location.
- External Log Service provides access to log files on non-WebSphere servers so that administrators can monitor these environments and ensure the successful startup or execution of custom operations.
While WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 expands infrastructure and operations optimization across a wider range of application servers, it also more deeply integrates non-OLTP workloads within dynamic operations to help organizations realize increased levels of infrastructure optimization. Typically, non-OLTP application types are siloed and not fully integrated with the existing application infrastructure.
With WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 organizations can run both OLTP and Compute Grid workload within the same application server and have WebSphere Extended Deployment intelligently manage and prioritize the work. Enhanced service policy and workload management for Compute Grid jobs are provided by a rule-based service policy methodology, and a new completion time service policy goal. In addition, WebSphere Extended Deployment's application placement controller has been enhanced to support an intelligent placement algorithm for Compute Grid jobs.
Supports a rich set of innovative, flexible and highly scalable application types and patterns
As organizations deploy more heterogeneous application infrastructures, they often, in parallel, look to significantly expand the types of applications they can run on these infrastructures. These applications are driven by streamlined development of Web applications, access to computational and information resources previously inaccessible, and the deeper integration of rich, multi-media, "presence-aware" characteristics within and across applications. The confluence of these trends has led to an unprecedented opportunity for organizations to develop new types of innovative applications which truly offer competitive differentiation.
Because of their distributed nature, often these types of applications require the utilization of flexible, data-intensive and data-sharing application patterns with extreme scalability requirements. Data concerns are increasingly tightly integrated within application patterns and in some cases application flows are entirely driven by data flow patterns and their associated events. This is especially true for SOA.
WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid V6.1 facilitates the creation of these innovative types of applications by extending the data caching concept with advanced features to facilitate the creation of new classes of high-performance applications. These applications can be realized by utilizing the ObjectGrid component in the following flexible scenarios and configurations:
- Simple Data/Database: Application may simply want to access its data structures to improve data performance and throughput using an ObjectGrid configuration as a cache. This is the traditional data caching scenario. ObjectGrid enhances this scenario by offering rollback capability.
- Peer-to-Peer/Shared: Set of peer Java virtual machines can be wired together with an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) publishing events across the set of virtual machines.
- Client/Server: A Java virtual machine can have a local ObjectGrid which sits in front of a remote ObjectGrid and caches a subset of the data. This allows a client to leverage a very large remote cache to offload backend processing or to speed access to cached results. Clients can use the distributed locking services provided by the remote ObjectGrid to coordinate access to shared data across clients.
- Real Time Data/Event Mining: Partitioned ObjectGrid configuration can subscribe to events, apply them to partitioned data, and run continuous queries on each partition to produce aggregate data in real-time thereby supporting linear scalability for these application types.
- Ultra-scale Data Grid: ObjectGrid clients can invoke agents that run against data in parallel on all machines in an ObjectGrid. Clients can then further aggregate the data stored in the ObjectGrid in parallel.
To enable these flexible configurations, the WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 Data Grid offers significant enhancements to support application innovation, extreme scalability, and increased levels of operational flexibility.
Application innovation is facilitated by enhanced query capabilities and data structures:
- Applications can use a query language to issue queries against a set of mapsets across an ObjectGrid configuration.
- Temporal query support allows a continuous query to be executed and the results kept up to date, in real time.
- Support for first-in, first-out (FIFO) ordering of mapsets allows in-memory queues with a range of persistence options enabled by either synchronous or asynchronous replication.
- ObjectGrid clients can request that live copies of ObjectGrid data be delivered to them in real-time using synchronous replication.
Extreme scalability of application patterns and usage scenarios is facilitated by the introduction of a non-centralized, peering configuration and deployment model called the Catalog Service, which will allow ObjectGrid mapsets to potentially span thousands of Java virtual machines and allow for extremely large datasets. In addition, the WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid V6.1 provides the ability to add more partitions to increase capacity using range-based partitions, and includes efficient, new algorithms to allow in-memory caches to grow to 100 GB or more.
Traditional distributed cache products used Map APIs as their primary programming model. ObjectGrid continues to offer this, but also allows graphs of objects to be easily pushed to the cache. ObjectGrid allows simple Java objects to be annotated and uses a simpler API to transparently allow these graphs to be fetched from the ObjectGrid as well as push any changes made by the application back to the ObjectGrid. This significantly simplifies programming compared with the older JCache or Map-based APIs.
Further, as the amount of data within the data grid grows, and the usage scenarios become more ubiquitous, it becomes increasingly important to address challenges related to operational flexibility. A major challenge relates to managing a data grid running on thousands of servers. ObjectGrid's catalog service automatically lays out data (primaries and replicas) across the set of online servers in a balanced fashion. If servers are started or stopped, then it automatically reacts to this by dynamically moving data across the grid to ensure that failed replica servers are replaced, and to spread the data out across all servers in the grid for maximum performance.
Another challenge relates to schema support. The structure of information in the data grid should be able to evolve over time without requiring existing clients, which can come and go, to be explicitly stopped and re-started. Therefore, WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid V6.1 allows the dynamic modification of the underlying data schema (or layout) which enables multiple applications, on different development cycles, to utilize different representations of the underlying data in the data grid. Additional features to support operational flexibility in this release include:
- Ability to snapshot mapsets which allows applications to easily generate snapshots for reporting purposes
- Replica completion for incomplete replicas based on the last replica checkpoint and synchronous replication
WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.0 introduced support for two new application types, Transactional Batch and Compute Intensive, enabling a Business Grid, which is the ability to run multiple types of applications across a single, now heterogeneous, application infrastructure. Not only does this facilitate new opportunities for infrastructure optimization, but it allows customers to develop innovative types of applications beyond OLTP.
WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 continues this trend by introducing support for Compute Grid jobs comprised of components, which are unconstrained by programming and component models and can execute natively on both WebSphere and non-WebSphere endpoints. These are referred to as Native Execution which joins both Transactional Batch and Compute Intensive as application types supported by the WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid V6.1. Further, in an ongoing trend to simplify the programming model and experience for Compute Grid developers, developers can now construct Compute Grid transactional batch applications using a much simpler, non-EJB programming style than previously supported.
Finally, as richer, multi-media and presence-aware applications increase in popularity in mainstream business environments, application infrastructures have to likewise evolve to support them. These types of applications typically have different quality-of-service requirements than what is often required for normal business applications, and they introduce a new set of challenges to your application infrastructure.
The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application-layer control (signaling) protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants; it is an important protocol to facilitate the integration of voice and video in mainstream business applications. WebSphere Extended Deployment Operations Optimization Controller V6.1 introduces function in two important areas to support SIP-based applications:
- Enhancements to the On Demand Router (ODR) to support automatic routing to SIP containers, routing SIP requests across multiple cells, multi-cluster routing to enable load balancing and failover across multiple clusters and classification of SIP messages according to transaction classes
- Dynamic workload management of SIP applications
Increases levels of operational control, robustness and proactive health management across a diverse enterprise application infrastructure
As organizations begin to deploy new application types and loosely coupled composite business services across a more diverse application infrastructure, concerns about complexity, operational management and availability can increase. Organizations require a consistent approach to administration across heterogeneous application types and infrastructures with the flexibility to integrate with current practices and policies. As the complexity of the application infrastructure grows, decreased human-intensive monitoring and management is necessary.
Further, as new, innovative types of applications are built, it is essential that they are able to be deployed and managed with the same qualities of service expected of mission-critical, production applications. Often these factors can act as significant inhibitors to realizing a more dynamic, optimized application infrastructure and achieving competitive advantage driven by the deployment of innovative applications.
In previous versions, WebSphere Extended Deployment delivered comprehensive health and operational monitoring capabilities for proactive detection and correction of application and server issues. To further facilitate the integration of health monitoring and management with existing practices, customization of both health policies and their associated corrective actions is now supported:
- Administrators can create custom health policies to create health conditions that they would like to monitor based on their infrastructure. These policies are expressions which can be a combination of metrics, for example with absolute breech thresholds or trends such as increasing or decreasing. Further, health policies can be specified based on custom-error response code conditions so that cases where servers are producing an unusually large number of error response codes can be detected.
- Administrators can configure custom health actions for health policies. One or more actions can be configured for an individual health policy as an orderable list of steps; when health conditions are triggered, health actions can take place in either a supervised or fully automated fashion.
WebSphere Extended Deployment's operational control and management is also significantly enhanced. While sharing of infrastructure resources is an important enabler of infrastructure optimization and the ability to dynamically allocate resources according to business goals and priorities, some environments, such as those seen in multi-tenant hosting environments, require the isolation of infrastructure resources to particular applications.
To support these environments, WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 introduces dynamic cluster isolation policies. Three different isolation policies are supported:
- No Isolation, the default policy, indicates to the application placement controller that dynamic cluster instances can be co-located with any other running process when placed on a node.
- Strict Isolation policy indicates that when an instance is placed on a node, it must not be co-located with any other running instances. An instance can only be co-located with other instances of itself, sometimes referred to as vertical stacking.
- Associate with Isolation Group policy indicates that it is valid to place instances on nodes running other dynamic cluster instances as long as they are both members of the same isolation group.
Further, often times it is desired to debug or tune a server in its runtime environment. This can be particularly difficult without having to bring the entire server off-line. Thus, WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 introduces a new server state called server maintenance mode, which facilitates this process. While in maintenance mode, a server can be either running or stopped. While running, the routing of all traffic will stop. Applications and Compute Grid jobs, which are in progress, will be allowed to finish.
Additionally, WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 enhances data logging and metrics for resource usage and workload execution, including new capabilities to meter Compute Grid applications, and streamlines charge-back accounting by easily facilitating integration with third party billing products such as the IBM Tivoli® Usage and Accounting Manager.
Finally, as new classes of applications such as transactional batch, compute-intensive, and native-execution are deployed across highly distributed environments, it can be challenging to realize the same qualities of service and production worthiness as OLTP applications. Similar to SOA, these types of applications often are composed of multiple components which run across many resources and they have different characteristics and execution objectives than OLTP workload.
Often times it is required to integrate the submission, monitoring and control of these types of workloads with existing enterprise schedulers such as IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler. WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid V6.1 provides multiple enhancements for organizations to reliably deploy these high-performance applications:
- The Compute Grid Job Scheduler can now run fully clustered in either a static or dynamic cluster.
- Introduction of a Job Management Console that an administrator can utilize to submit jobs, setup recurring jobs, monitor job execution, view job logs, and perform operational actions against a job including a new job-stop operation that instead of canceling a job immediately, stops the job at the next checkpoint.
- Service interfaces facilitate integration with external scheduling and job management environments such as IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler to submit, monitor, and control Compute Grid jobs.
- Innovative job classes for Compute Grid workloads established a policy for resource consumption allowing for the management and control of execution time, the number of concurrent jobs, and the size of job log and job output queue storage.
Streamlines install, configuration and deployment across diverse infrastructure resources
In a heterogeneous, distributed computing environment it can be quite challenging to deploy required software across multiple machines. Often there are particular software dependencies based on the machine type and its capabilities. Administrators have typically hand-crafted install scripts and packaging structures to automate the process, but this can be both error-prone and time consuming. It can often detract from work on higher value activities which improve the business bottom line.
WebSphere Extended Deployment Operations Optimization Controller V6.1 addresses these challenges by streamlining the install and deployment process via a centralized install manager. With the Central Install Manager organizations can easily install the required maintenance to all of the WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment machines in their cell as well as the required WebSphere Extended Deployment software to both machines with the minimum levels of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment maintenance and non-WebSphere servers. This can be done either via the WebSphere Extended Deployment administrative console or via the wsadmin command line tool.
Further, WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid V6.1 introduces a flexible approach to the deployment of ObjectGrid components which seamlessly works with either WebSphere Extended Deployment's Central Install Manager / Deployment Manager, or an organization's existing cluster packaging and deployment framework. It accomplishes this via the introduction of a centralized coordinator service called the Catalog Service:
- Clustered to achieve high availability and uses synchronous memory replication among ObjectGrid members to persist the runtime state of the ObjectGrid
- Discovered by ObjectGrid instances, which receive all configuration information including group assignments
- Enables optimal performance by automatically balancing data and partitions over the set of servers hosting a mapset
In addition, ObjectGrid integrates with WebSphere Extended Deployment's dynamic clusters to automatically assign cluster members as ObjectGrid servers. The dynamic cluster will automatically be modified or expanded when data memory heap thresholds are met.
Finally, install, configuration and deployment of highly distributed applications such as those provided for by WebSphere Extended Deployment's Compute Grid can present even further challenges. With multiple execution components, these innovative applications can further strain administrator's ability to deploy them. However, with WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid V6.1, required components are installed as part of the WebSphere Extended Deployment runtime and activated through a simple configuration change via standard WebSphere administration interfaces. In addition, two new features are introduced to further facilitate deployment of these types of applications:
- Requirements-based job scheduling that automatically establishes the set of resources eligible to execute a job based on job requirements and resource capabilities.
- Unit test environment with a simple packaging structure to develop and test Compute Grid jobs on a single WebSphere Application Server.

Entitlement options include:
- The default exchange for a WebSphere Extended Deployment for Mixed Server Environment license is to WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid. Optionally, you may choose to exchange it for WebSphere Extended Deployment Operations Optimization Node. The Mixed Server Environment package contains two functions; the remote agent, which is now included in the Operations Optimization Node, and the ObjectGrid, which is included in the Data Grid.
- Optionally, you may exchange a WebSphere Extended Deployment license entitlement for two WebSphere Extended Deployment Operations Optimization Node licenses.
If you would prefer either of these optional entitlements send your request to the WebSphere Sales Assistance Center at wsac@us.ibm.com to initiate the request. Be sure to include your name, company name and contact information.
Charge metrics definitions
Value Unit
A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.
Processor (Value Unit)
A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table on the following Web site
With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.
Sub-capacity processor (Value Unit)
For programs eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the "International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for sub-capacity terms" or the program's license information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms.
Client device
A client device is a computing device that requests the execution of a set of commands, procedures, or applications from another computer system that is typically referred to as a server. Multiple client devices may share access to a common server. A client device generally has some processing capability or is programmable to allow a user to do work. Examples include, but are not limited to, notebook computers, desktop computers, desk side computers, technical workstations, appliances, automated teller machines, point-of-sale terminals, tills and cash registers, and kiosks.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products
Sub-capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.
More information can be found on the Passport Advantage Web site
Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing
To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.
For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.
Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a Primary Business Contact is established for their contracts.
For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements and reporting, refer to 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.
If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.
IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at
Publication Form Planning, Installation, and SC32-1431 Configuration Administration SC32-1430 Problem Determination SC32-9102 Data Dictionary SC32-1432 Release Notes SC32-1429
For IBM Tivoli License Manager configuration guidance and instructions for specific products (including this product) acquired with sub-capacity terms, refer to
The Web site will give you information about how to set up the product for detection by IBM Tivoli License Manager, any required maintenance, and any required steps that are unique to this product.
