Description

SOAs have the potential to drive business flexibility, performance, and innovation by better aligning your information technologies to your business objectives. Maximizing this potential depends on how well you manage the services in your SOA throughout the life cycle.

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository is an industrial-strength tool that helps you achieve tangible business value from your SOA by enabling better management and governance of your services. Through its robust registry and repository capabilities and its tight integration with IBM SOA Foundation, WebSphere Service Registry and Repository is an essential foundational component of your SOA implementation.

Store, access, and manage information to support a successful SOA

The WebSphere Service Registry and Repository system lets you store, access, and manage information about the services (commonly referred to as service metadata) in your SOA. This information is used to select, invoke, govern, and reuse services.

You can use WebSphere Service Registry and Repository to store information about services in your systems, or in other organizations' systems, that you already use, that you plan to use, or that you want to be aware of. For example, an application can check with WebSphere Service Registry and Repository just before it invokes a service to locate the most appropriate service that satisfies its functional and performance needs. This capability helps make your SOA deployment more dynamic and more adaptable to changing business conditions.

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository includes:

  • Service registry that contains information about services, such as the service interfaces, its operations, and parameters.
  • Metadata repository that has the robust framework and extensibility to suit the diverse nature of service usage.
  • Support for clustered deployment topology, meeting the scalability requirements with the growth of services and associated metadata.
  • Document Support feature that lets you annotate services with any form of document (for example, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel). The basic capability is to:
    • Store a binary/generic document — as a new type of document
    • Relate it to another entity that it describes — using the existing relationship facility
    • Retrieve documentation associated with the service
    • Update documentation associated with the service
  • Included UDDI synchronization module, which allows entries created via a UDDI v3-capable product to be synchronized with entries in WebSphere Service Registry and Repository. WSDL document entries that have been created in UDDI following Best Practice: "Using in a UDDI Registry" or Technical Note: "Using Web Services Description Language in a UDDI Registry, V2.0.2" can be mapped, created, and maintained including their metadata using this module. Policy documents stored in UDDI can also be mapped in WebSphere Service Registry and Repository. The support is bidirectional, meaning that documents created in WebSphere Service Registry and Repository can be mapped into UDDI and vice-versa.
  • 'Load documents' facility that enables users to add multiple documents, resolve all import dependencies, and optionally to save the documents as a collection.

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository can be a critical deployment component of SOA projects because it allows you to:

  • Have clear visibility into service associations and relationships. This allows you to better align IT to meet business needs by outlining business tasks and the corresponding IT services. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository capabilities support service life-cycle management and governance so that you can better control your SOA environment.
  • Share your services. You can identify common services to avoid duplication and foster reuse. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository functions support discovery and reuse of services and the associated metadata and artifacts.
  • Deliver services interoperability. This capability is critical to making the most of existing investments and infrastructure. With the support of Web Services Description Language (WSDL), XML, XML Schema Definition (XSD) Language, Service Component Architecture (SCA), and other standards including UDDI, WebSphere Service Registry and Repository delivers true interoperability.
  • Provide SOA governance. SOA governance is a catalyst for optimized SOA deployments in meeting the IT and business objectives. Your SOA can be more tightly aligned to business objectives because it is organized by business-oriented services and if needed, also by IT function. Thus, better governance of your SOA means better business results.
  • Unlock the value of mainframe applications and databases. Mainframe applications and database interactions that are exposed as services can be published to WebSphere Service Registry and Repository and accessed by both mainframe and non-mainframe applications without invasive programming at the API level.
  • Enforce best practices. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository provides functions and flexibility to help IT groups institute standards and best practices in their SOA deployments.
  • Incrementally adopt SOA. The scalable nature of WebSphere Service Registry and Repository enables you to start your SOA small and grow as needed. You can incrementally deploy your SOA alongside your existing assets and processes.

Playing a vital role in IBM SOA Foundation

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository plays a major role in the SOA life cycle.

  • Model. During service modeling, you can use WebSphere Service Registry and Repository to create or reuse service taxonomies, classifications, and XML schemas.
  • Assemble. During service development or assembly, you can use WebSphere Service Registry and Repository to locate services for reuse and to enable service composition, such as creating new composite applications.
  • Deploy. As part of the service deployment process, you can publish service descriptions to WebSphere Service Registry and Repository. It augments any service descriptions that already exist from development or other tools, which helps by enriching the service interaction from runtimes.
  • Manage. To manage services that leverage system-management practices (such as Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) processes, and Change and Configuration Management Database (CCMDB) for storing information about service interactions such as mediations), you can use WebSphere Service Registry and Repository to capture and assess the performance of services against business and operational performance objectives.

The service registry forms the core that feeds the overall SOA governance technology, which underpins the SOA framework. Today, most service registries provide basic publishing and discovery of service descriptions. Some solutions may offer basic repositories, but they do not address the overall service metadata aspects in a repository. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository overcomes these deficiencies. Its robust, industrial-strength capabilities help you efficiently manage access to, and governance of, services. Standard registry and repository functions for the entire software life cycle, well integrated with IBM SOA Foundation and other complimentary third-party software solutions, make WebSphere Service Registry and Repository a valuable component of your SOA. IPLA and subscription and support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository is an integrated SOA Foundation product that performs critical functions in the area of SOA governance and service life-cycle management.

As an enabler for SOA governance, WebSphere Service Registry and Repository:

  • Maintains service integrity and authorizes changes to deployed services

    It enables visibility and access controls over service metadata for sharing and reuse. The service tracking capability, along with the information on service dependencies, provides governance to authorize changes to services that are already deployed. It also provides dependency analysis to assist in the analysis of a change to service information.

  • Provides rich interaction with all stages of the SOA life cycle

    Run-time integration makes SOA run times dynamic and efficient, bringing business flexibility. An Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) or any run-time hosting services or service mediation can access WebSphere Service Registry and Repository enabling dynamic behavior into the SOA environment.

  • Offers rich service metadata capabilities

    Classification and socialization of high-value services encourage reuse and interoperability. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository provides user-defined metadata to support enterprise information model. It offers OWL-based, user-defined semantic classifications on all service entities to facilitate lookup from different business areas and user roles.

  • Exposes key access points through standardized APIs

    The basic operations that are exposed as APIs are necessary for driving the integration needed so that WebSphere Service Registry and Repository can facilitate the broader requirements of SOA.

Support for migration from WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V6.0.0 to V6.0.2 is provided. In order to migrate, customers will need to apply the latest Fix Pack level available for WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V6.0.0. Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a Proof of Entitlement (PoE) for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the value unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Sub-capacity processor (Value Unit)

For programs eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) where the program runs. Refer to the "International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for sub-capacity terms" or the program's license information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a Primary Business Contact is established for their contracts.

If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use IBM Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Limited warranty: Yes

Warranty: IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it for a refund.

  • For programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
  • For programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings,this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

Usage restrictions: Yes. The supplied copies of WebSphere Application Server and DB2® Universal Database are for use only with WebSphere Service Registry and Repository.

Yes. Software Maintenance is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Product upgrades and Technical Support are provided by the Software Maintenance offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.

If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
