IBM WebSphere Business Glossary product module
IBM Information Server provides a Web-based tool that enables business analysts and subject-matter experts to create, manage, and share a common enterprise vocabulary and classification system. WebSphere Business Glossary functionality is powered by and actively connected to WebSphere Metadata Server. This enables users to link business terms to more technical artifacts managed by WebSphere Metadata Server. The Metadata Server also enables sharing of the business terms by IBM Rational® Data Architect and WebSphere Information Analyzer, creating a common set of semantic tags for reuse by data modelers, data analysts, business analysts, and end users.
Key features
-
Manage business terms and categories:
WebSphere Business Glossary provides a dedicated, Web-based user interface for creating, managing,
and sharing a controlled vocabulary. Terms represent the major information concepts in your
enterprise. Categories are used to organize these terms into hierarchies.
Benefit: Users can take ownership of business metadata by importing terms from external sources, authoring and editing terms in the Web interface, classifying terms into categories, and relating terms to more technical artifacts managed by the WebSphere Metadata Server.
-
Manage stewardship:
Stewards are people or organizations with responsibility for a given information asset. Using the
WebSphere Business Glossary functionality of IBM Information Server, administrators can import
stewards profiles from external sources, create and edit profiles in the Web interface, and create
relationships of responsibility between stewards and business terms or any of the artifacts managed
by WebSphere Metadata Server.
Benefit: Accountability and responsibility can be assigned, supporting enterprise data governance.
-
Customize and extend:
Needs around business metadata tend to differ from one enterprise to the next. For this reason,
there is no "one size fits all" meta-model. In addition to being able to customize the entry page
to the application, administrators can extend the application with custom attributes on both
business categories and business terms.
Benefit: Administrators can tailor the tool to the needs of their business users.
-
Collaborate:
It is not enough to simply document business metadata. This information must be alive in the
enterprise, with open access to all. WebSphere Business Glossary provides a collaborative
environment in which users can organically grow this important information asset.
Benefit: Users are able to add annotations to business terms and categories, as well as any artifacts managed by the IBM WebSphere Metadata Server.
IBM WebSphere Metadata Server
IBM Information Server provides the next-generation metadata repository that is fully integrated and common across all product modules, including WebSphere Information Analyzer, WebSphere QualityStage, WebSphere DataStage, and WebSphere Business Glossary. The metadata services infrastructure of IBM Information Server is designed to allow metadata to be more easily managed, accessed by those who need it, and shared across heterogeneous technologies through an SOA.
Key features
-
Unified metadata foundation:
IBM Information Server leverages a unified metadata infrastructure to facilitate a shared
understanding across business and technical domains for metadata-driven integration.
Benefit: This metadata foundation not only reduces the time between specification and build, but additionally provides a persistent record of understanding that can drastically reduce downstream project delivery times and improve overall insight and confidence in information. All functions of IBM Information Server share common metadata artifacts, spanning design and operational metadata, making it easier for different roles and functions to collaborate seamlessly to complete project tasks.
-
Actively shared metadata:
Active metadata services and an integrated metadata repository help to make developers more
productive, improve visibility and manageability of an organization's information assets, and foster
collaboration across users of different information integration tools.
Benefit: Active metadata across IBM Information Server removes the manual burden of metadata management and improves project transparency across roles.
-
Role-based access to metadata functionality:
Data analysts, ETL developers, business analysts, and subject-matter experts each have dedicated
user interfaces with embedded metadata functionality such as browse, search, subscribe, and impact
analysis.
Benefit: Role-specific tools for users from application developers to business end users enable alignment of business and IT, with common goals and a shared understanding.

Additional disk space considerations:
- Consider the amount of necessary disk space on the federated server to manage any temporary tables and sorts that exceed the available memory.
- The disk space requirements vary depending on your configuration and the type of disk drive that you have. Significantly more disk space might be required on FAT drives with larger cluster sizes than NTFS drives.
- Include required client software and communication products when you calculate the amount of disk space that is needed for your installation.

Charge metrics definitions
Server
A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (POE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processors and partitions in the server on which the program runs or for each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.
Authorized user
An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A POE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user POE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a POE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.
