Description

IBM Director for Linux on System z, V5.20 provides system management functionality. Its optional, priced extensions (IBM Director z/VM Center — formerly IBM Director Extensions — and IBM Director Software Distribution Premium Edition) further extend this functionality. The features and functions of IBM Director and its extensions are described below.

  • IBM Director, V5.20 (base, no-charge)

Use IBM Director V5.20 stand-alone or with compatible existing enterprise or workgroup management environments to access and manage physically dispersed IT assets more efficiently.

Flexible capabilities can help you realize greater system availability and lower IT costs. With IBM Director, IT administrators can view and track the hardware configuration of select remote systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical components, such as processors, disks, memory, and many others.

In addition to the improvements to IBM Director, enhanced tasks are also available. These tools are tightly integrated with IBM Director for consistent management from a single console.

Interoperability with, and complementary function for, your compatible existing workgroup or enterprise systems management applications potentially lower the total cost of managing and supporting your networked systems. By deploying IBM Director, you may be able to achieve reductions in ownership costs through:

    • Reduced downtime
    • Increased productivity of IT personnel and end users
    • Reduced service and support costs

IBM Director V5.20 includes new features and support for new operating systems and enhancements to existing functions. Together, these provide significantly richer and broader systems management capabilities for superior platform management. Enhancements include:

    • New IBM Director Express Installation provides a simplified installation option using default values and a simplified task list for essential operations. Users can add other tasks after installation, if desired.
    • Several security improvements including:
      • Support for LDAP server authentication
      • Support for hierarchy of global or domain local user groups
      • Task authorization for both parent tasks and subtasks
      • Command line support for user and group authorization tasks
    • The command line interface is expanded to allow command-line creation of dynamic groups.
    • Support for new IBM hardware.
    • An updated, comprehensive, Web-based information center that provides easy access to the most up-to-date product information available.
  • IBM Director extensions

IBM Director provides optional tools that integrate into the IBM Director interface for a consistent, single point of management. The available extensions for System z include:

    • IBM Director z/VM Center (formerly IBM Director Extensions) (optional, priced feature)

A new task, Utility Service Configuration Manager, has been added to IBM Director z/VM Center extension in this version to provide ease-of-use of installation and customization of Linux utilities services. A utility service combines applications, configurations, and a system environment (for example, network setup, storage), which is needed to make a specific function available to the end user. The utility service hides the details of the underlying setup, thereby reducing the complexity of providing that function. Customers can take advantage of the Utility Service Configuration Manager function, when the description is available from the Linux Utilities solution owner.

With Utility Service Configuration Manager you can configure utility services that have been installed with the new Software Distribution Premium Edition task on z/VM Linux guest systems.

The Linux Utilities for IBM System z are a set of Linux-based solutions on System z. Each solution of the Linux Utilities provides specific infrastructure functions that complement System z. They are intended to integrate "commodity" workloads (utilities) with z/OS® workloads into the mainframe to benefit from the control and management System z offers.

    • IBM Director Software Distribution Premium Edition (optional, priced feature)

The software distribution task included with the base IBM Director enables you to distribute IBM-provided software packages. Software Distribution Premium Edition goes to the next level. It is a new and powerful priced, optional feature of IBM Director for Linux on System z that enables you to easily create and distribute software packages to the systems (Linux and Windows™) on your network, which can help save travel and labor costs. It includes software scheduling and bundling capabilities and allows administrators to push software to servers and PCs. It also supports manual comparisons of actual end of point inventory against desired inventory so that administrators can determine if any software patches or updates are missing.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone
  • Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings
  • Screen readers and screen magnifiers tested for use by people with visual impairment

Product positioning

The IBM Director for Linux on System z offers the following optional features:

  • IBM Director z/VM Center (formerly IBM Director Extensions) (optional, priced feature)
  • IBM Director Software Distribution Premium Edition (optional, priced feature)

IBM Director and optional features are available on many IBM platforms, so why run them on Linux on the mainframe? Linux on mainframe servers have been using virtualization technologies offered on System z and z/VM for many years. Virtualization "Best Practices" can be extended into distributed environments with the simplified provisioning offered via IBM Director z/VM Center (formerly IBM Director Extensions) and also the sophisticated underlying IBM System z, z/VM, and Linux qualities of services might make virtual Linux servers an interesting alternative for business-critical applications.

Beyond the base IBM Director capability for static or dynamic grouping, the Server Complex task (IBM Director z/VM Center) enables sophisticated provisioning into a set of z/VM servers (a Server Complex) where each of the servers is customized in respect to the application tier that will be applied into the server. Application-optimized provisioning into those z/VM Server Complexes can help ease many of the daily system management tasks such as patch verification or distribution of new software for current, as well as previous, system setup levels.

Software Distribution Premium Edition is a new powerful optional priced feature of IBM Director for Linux on System z that enables you to easily create and distribute software packages to the systems on your network, which can help save travel and labor costs. The software distribution task included with IBM Director enables you to distribute IBM-provided software packages. Premium Edition is an optional priced feature that enables you to both build and distribute your own software packages for IBM Director managed systems, which might be Windows, Linux, AIX®, or i5/OS™ environments.

When the application setup crosses different hardware platforms, the IBM Director's grouping on the application level enables the data collection in the context of applications. Therefore, it enables the consistent view above the IT infrastructure used by the application.

Managed Processor

Charges are based on the activated processors (also known as engines) on the machines in the computing environment affiliated with the program rather than on the server where the program is run. The managed processors, which require Proof of Entitlement's (PoE's) (authorizations) are defined both in the Prices section of the announcement or the License Information's Program-unique Terms. For System z machines, managed processors may be an Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) engine, standard engine (CP), or both, as appropriate.

  1. If there are Program Components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information
  2. IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  3. Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  4. The program may not run on some or all of the processors for which PoE's are required by the program's valuation method.
  5. In the System z environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
  6. Threading, a technique that makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  7. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blades with which the program is affiliated.

Server

A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user and/or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE), or the original paid sales receipt, must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processors and partitions in the server on which the program runs for each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade server is considered a separate Server.

  • Entitles customers to future releases and versions during the term at no additional charge. Note that the customer is not entitled to new products.

When Subscription and Support is ordered, the charges will renew automatically annually unless cancelled by the customer.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
