In addition to the improvements to IBM Director, enhanced extensions are also available. These tools are tightly integrated with IBM Director for consistent management from a single console.

IBM Director features

  • A powerful user interface that works the way you do. It helps improve productivity by enabling you to accomplish more in a shorter period of time. The customizable console enables you to decide which management tasks to perform and which information is displayed.
  • An easy-to-use, integrated toolset. It helps you get started faster, accomplish more in a shorter period of time, and manage more systems per technician.
  • Easy installation and setup. Installing IBM Director is fast. You can easily choose what components you want to install. The lighter installation limits the impact on network traffic. There generally is no need to reboot your system when an update is applied.
  • The ability to select the level of management you need. IBM Director can provide basic management capabilities for systems even without an agent. A set of core services for IBM Director can be installed for robust hardware management including detailed hardware inventory and status. Move from the core services level to the full agent to discover the advanced capabilities of IBM Director.

  • IBM Virtualization Manager: Allows you to manage both your physical and virtual machines from a single console. IBM Virtualization Manager supports management for VMware, Microsoft Virtual Server, and Xen environments on IBM System x™ and BladeCenter. IBM Virtualization manager also can link into the IBM System p™ Hardware Management Console (HMC) for virtualization management on System p.
  • Remote Deployment Manager™: Enables remote, unattended installation of new and existing systems. It helps automate deployment tasks such as initial operating system installation, BIOS updates, and disposal of retired systems. All of these tasks can be done without visiting the remote system, helping reduce travel and labor costs.
  • Capacity Manager: Tracks resource utilization, identifies multiple levels of existing or potential bottlenecks, and makes recommendations to improve performance. By predicting future server bottlenecks and proactively alerting IBM Director, it performs automated corrective actions to minimize downtime. Capacity Manager generates capacity and performance reports in XML format.
  • Software Distribution Premium Edition: Enables you to easily create and distribute software packages to the systems on your network, helping save travel and labor costs. The standard software distribution included with IBM Director enables you to distribute IBM-provided software packages. Premium Edition is an optional priced feature for IBM Director that enables you to both build and distribute your own software packages for Microsoft Windows™ and Linux™ environments.
  • System Availability: Tracks and offers a variety of graphical views of system downtime or uptime for an individual system or group of systems, helping save labor costs associated with remotely managing and tracking server performance and availability. It can also schedule system availability reports and generate these reports in XML formats.

Product positioning

IBM Director V5.20 is a major new release of the acclaimed hardware management solution. It offers an integrated suite of software tools for a consistent, single point of management and automation. IBM Director helps you get started faster and be more productive with enhancements that improve ease of use.

IBM Director helps realize maximum system availability and lower IT costs. IT administrators can view and track the hardware configuration of remote systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical components, such as processors, disks, and memory. IBM Director also complements and integrates with higher-level management software such as Tivoli.

IBM Director, a hardware platform management solution, and Tivoli Software are complementary and can be used either individually or together to deliver superior end-to-end IT management. IBM Director's focus is on hardware platform management, health, and configuration to help deliver maximum system availability. It consists of a set of tools that provide very granular hardware management information which can be passed up and integrated into Tivoli products, providing them with richer hardware metrics. The IBM Tivoli portfolio of products provide a broader set of management capabilities than IBM Director and are more scalable for enterprise-wide operations. Tivoli products also go beyond hardware management and provide advanced, automated tools for managing software applications, networks, storage, and how IT resources, performance, and usage fit and with overall business policies and goals as part of IBM's Service Management initiative.

IBM Director's open design and support for industry standards enable heterogeneous hardware management with broad platform and operating system support, protecting your IT investment. IBM Director enables monitoring and event management across a heterogeneous IT environment including IBM Systems as well as non-IBM x86 compatible systems from a single Java™-based user interface. From one access point, users can monitor system resources, take inventory, receive events, perform corrective actions, and control their systems.

Subscription program numbers should be ordered individually with a quantity of licenses equal to the purchased quantity of licenses for license program.

A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user and/or client devices over a network. A Proof of Entitlement (POE) must be obtained for each server on which the program is run or for each server managed by the program. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate Server.

Server: A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user and/or client devices. A PoE must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processors and partitions in the server on which the program runs or for each server managed by the program. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server.

To order the programs described in this announcement, specify the type model number, order type description, and quantity of desired licenses for the appropriate one-time charge (OTC) features listed in the tables below. A "media package" is a separately priced option offered at initial acquisition of program licenses. The maximum quantity allowed for a feature associated with a media package is one per type model order no matter how many licenses are requested on that same type model order.

Licensing: Every IBM System x™ server and BladeCenter® unit comes with an IBM Director Server license. This license includes authorizations for the following installations:

  • One installation of IBM Director Server
  • 20 installations of IBM Director Agent on non-IBM systems
  • Unlimited installations of IBM Director Console

Most IBM Intel-compatible systems come with a license for IBM Director Agent.
