IBM Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM® can help z/VM system administrators and operators efficiently and effectively back up and restore files and data on z/VM systems. Source files and data can be CMS and non-CMS format and the target media can be DASD or tape. Backup and Restore Manager's flexibility is apparent in its ability to do physical and logical backup and restore operations with support for inclusion and exclusion of files, user IDs, and so on.
Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM V1.2 is designed to deliver:
- Improved performance for incremental backup of CMS files

Critical to the business of running a z/VM production system is the ability to back up and restore files and full systems. Backing up data requires moving data from source media, such as CMS files on DASD, to target media, such as tape. IBM Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM can help administrators and operators meet this daily requirement more effectively and efficiently.
V1.2 of Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM is designed to provide the following additional functions:
The performance of INCLUDE/EXCLUDE processing of backup job submissions has been improved, affecting both jobs submitted for review and those submitted for processing. The amount of time required for the Backup Manager server to complete the INCLUDE/EXCLUDE processing is reduced for most backup job definitions.
Administrators who perform incremental backups between full backup cycles may also see improved performance. The amount of time required for incremental backups can be reduced for most backup jobs, allowing you to perform backups during shorter administration and maintenance windows. This improvement was also made available in V1.1 of Backup and Restore Manager via the PTF for APAR PK25098.
Performance improvements have also been made for backup jobs that write data to tape. This improvement can result in reduced overall time writing to tape and potential for reduced overhead in preparing the data before writing to tape.
Improved DASD support
In addition to the DASD supported in Backup and Restore Manager V1.1, V1.2 includes support for image-level backups of Fixed Block Access (FBA) DASD and Virtual Disks in Storage (also known as VFB-512). This function is in addition to the file-level support for FBA and VFB-512 that was available in V1.1, when the data on these devices was on CMS minidisks or in the Share File System (SFS).
With Backup and Restore Manager V1.2, temporary disk space is no longer required for the backup server when the target location of a restore request is the virtual reader. Data can be restored from the source location (disk or tape) directly to the spool without the need for a staging disk.
New exits available for compression and encryption
Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 includes new exit points for the optional compression of backup data before it is written to disk. In addition to the sample compression routine provided with the product, you can configure Backup and Restore Manager to call your own compression routines, including the ability to call different routines for different backup jobs.
The compression routines can also be called when backing up to tape. For performance reasons, IBM recommends using the hardware compression feature provided in tape devices, rather than the software routines provided by Backup and Restore Manager, to perform data compression.
In addition to compression, Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 provides optional exit points for encryption of backup data before it is written to tape or disk. Administrators can configure Backup and Restore Manager to call third-party encryption routines through these exit points. Similar to the compression exits, the encryption routine used can be defined as part of the backup job, allowing you to use different third-party routines or algorithms for different backup jobs and data.
Additional flexibility for administrators
Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 supports the specification of real device addresses (RDEVs) and real volume serial numbers of DASD volumes when defining a backup job. This is in addition to the virtual device addresses supported in V1.1.
For CMS minidisks that are formatted with the RESERVE option, Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 allows you to specify whether the disk should be backed up at the file level or at the image level. This configuration option is defined as part of each backup job definition. This improvement was also made available in V1.1 of Backup and Restore Manager via the PTF for APAR PK11754.
In addition to defining the total number of worker service machines which will fulfill backup and restore requests, administrators can now specify the number of workers dedicated to backup requests only, the number of workers dedicated to restore requests only, and the number of workers available for both backup and restore requests. This allows administrators, for example, to enable the availability of a worker for an end user's restore request, regardless of the number of backup requests in queue.
V1.2 of Backup and Restore Manager provides additional configuration options when using Tape Manager for z/VM (5697-J08) to mount and manage your backup tapes. Administrators can now specify the name of a tape pool as part of the backup job template, allowing different backup jobs to use scratch tapes from different tape pools. If no tape pool is specified in a backup job, Backup and Restore Manager will use the default tape pool specified at the system level.
In addition, when Tape Manager for z/VM is operating in RMM mode (using DFSMSrmm on z/OS® as the tape catalog), Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 can include a data set name (DSN) in the tape label. The DSN to be written is specified by the administrator in the backup job template.
With V1.2, administrators can more easily perform a set of automated tasks in the Backup Manager server at the start of each new day. Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 provides a new customizable exit on the backup server which is automatically called at its first wakeup after midnight each day. This improvement was also made available in V1.1 of Backup and Restore Manager via the PTF for APAR PK11754.
Improved administrator productivity
Additional retry processing has been added to Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 when scratch tapes are requested during a backup. If the mounted tape is found to already be assigned to another backup instance, it will be detached and a new scratch request will be issued.
In addition to describing sample routines in the product documentation, sample routines are now shipped on the product tape, making it easier for administrators to customize and implement them.

Engine-based Value Unit pricing
Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance.
There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Backup and Restore Manager has already been installed.
Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.
Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

Specified operating environment
Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM V1.2 will operate on any hardware that supports the prerequisite software. In addition, Backup and Restore Manager V1.2 supports backup to any tape device supported by CMS that handles a block size of 65,535 bytes.
All prerequisites and corequisites for these products apply.
The products listed here are supported only while service is available for those products.

Licensing: IBM International Program License Agreement and License Information document. Proofs of Entitlement (PoE) are required for all authorized use.
These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provides for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours) as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.
S/390® and zSeries IBM Operational Support Services SoftwareXcel is an option for those customers who desire added services.

Warranty: This program includes a warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. For one year from acquisition of the program, this warranty provides the customer with access to databases containing program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or otherwise obtain and install.
Program support: Enhanced Support, called Subscription and Support, includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours) as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect. The customer will be notified of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice.
