CATIA V5.17 strengthens the integration between 3D electrical harness design and documentation, further reducing design to manufacturing cycle time for the automotive and aerospace industries. This release further increases CATIA Machining NC programming and simulation efficiency to significantly reduce overall manufacturing process time.

CATIA V5.17 further facilitates design innovation with core styling capabilities that enable designers to explore product ideas more rapidly while permitting last-minute styling modifications. CATIA V5.17 delivers a unique auto-filleting capability that enables automotive powertrain and chassis designers to reduce the time required to fillet complex parts from hours or days to minutes. This release also accelerates adoption of CATIA V5's breakthrough functional modeling for the automotive powertrain process.

Integrated Product Lifecycle Management maximizes collaboration

The V5.17 VPM Navigator boosts the use of relational design by making it easier for designers to work concurrently on different part versions and to manage advanced product effectivity and configuration. The SMARTEAM Reconciliator further facilitates interaction among companies and concurrent engineering across the supply chain through ergonomic enhancements, such as batch capabilities and advanced queries.

A richer 3D XML format now includes finite element analysis output to widen the scope for the use of this lightweight format and makes it easier to reuse and share 3D outside the design office.

Open and scalable architecture increases flexibility

Key Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) market players are adopting the V5 architecture. Additional partner V5 applications launched since CATIA V5.16 extend the process coverage of V5 solutions with highly specialized applications that cover many disciplines, such as sheetmetal design-to-manufacturing and digital mock-up (DMU).

Description

Integrated portfolio supports seamless industry processes

CATIA V5.17 increases the value of the CATIA — Electrical Harness Flattening product for harness drawing production by enabling reuse of existing flattening harnesses. This enhances productivity for faster layout editing of flattening harnesses and improves harness drafting quality with automatically generated dress-up. The flattening process becomes more robust and completes the layout process more efficiently. The enhanced CATIA — Electrical Harness Design offering reduces design-to-manufacturing cycle time, especially for CATIA V5 automotive and aerospace electrical design customers.

V5.17 widens the scope of the end-to-end collaborative composites solution to reduce overall design to manufacturing time. An automatic mirrored part generation function enables the designer to create a fully-associative opposite part of a design, such as wing, with a single click, saving low added value design time. The robust composites analysis and simulation tools (core sampling, nonstructural ply management, fiber direction indication) are improved to manage more complex geometries and to easily help the designer to validate the design early in the process.

In addition, V5.17 offers an interactive way to easily migrate CATIA V4 models (materials, geometry, data structure) to CATIA V5 and enables the user to define zones where a splice or an overlap is not allowed, such as for structural reasons. The cut pieces will be automatically generated according to these specifications.

The release improves composites manufacturing export capabilities for nesting and cutting processes and offers a new automatic ply book generation capability. This associative document enables the manufacturing operator to easily and accurately locate the ply on the mold to avoid incorrect draping. The book includes all information required to perform the process, such as 2D geometries, ply manufacturing annotations, ply group, sequence and material names, and ply thickness.

In conjunction with DELMIA, CATIA V5.17 reinforces the entry-level end-to-end process for shipbuilding. It performs manufacturing preparation of heavy structure parts directly on top of 3D design data in a semi-automatic way.

Release 17 further increases CATIA machining programming and simulation efficiency to significantly reduce overall manufacturing process time. It offers three new operations to significantly boost NC programming and to reduce machining time. For hard material machining, V5.17 introduces a comprehensive operation for managing plunge milling. Developed with tool makers, it features a process-oriented tool path style and fully takes into account residual stock for a collision-free tool path.

In addition, V5.17 adds the capability to automatically detect full-diameter engagement situations and manages tool overload (reducing the feed rate, adding extra machining planes, adding trochoidal paths) to greatly improve machining time and cutting tool life. A new 4-axis sweeping operation machines parts with a sweeping tool path style and a tool axis driven by a 2D curve.

Finally, V5.17 provides the NC programmer with a complete operation to support the machining of tubes and other parts that present an obvious central axis/curve. This availability of this operation leads to major productivity gains in NC programming for such parts.

V5.17 improves the breakthrough realistic integrated machine simulation capability released in CATIA V5.16. Simultaneous, synchronized simulation of material removal and machine motion enables realistic simulation of the complete machining environment, including collision detection between machine parts and in-process stock. The simulation can use NC code generated inside or outside of CATIA V5. This capability enables a final virtual buy-off of the NC program. Additionally, the user can now analyze machined stock during integrated material simulation by accessing the Analyze , Video Measure , and Remove Chunks commands to validate the accuracy of the machined part.

V5.17 greatly improves CATIA core and cavity design, especially for the stamping die process. The CATIA — Core & Cavity Design product uses rough offset technology to offer a new "light surface." The die designer can use this light surface in place of the original during the die design phase, providing major capacity and performance gains for ultra large designs. In addition, designers can rapidly and easily identify and modify the fillet radii of the stamping dies prior to milling, leading to significant cycle time reduction. The enhanced associativity between the parting line and the design contribute to improved productivity.

Finally, V5.17 enhances mold tooling design efficiency and intuitiveness and makes it easier for the tooling designer to classify tooling elements more explicitly in the specification tree. In parallel, designers can more easily manage the component replacement process and its possible impacts.

V5.17 delivers major productivity gains to sheetmetal designers for complex designs. This release greatly improves wall-on-edge design by enabling the user to define a wall-on-edge in the assembly context. In addition, the user can intuitively define most of the attributes of the wall-on-edge and the bend properties directly in 3D. Combined with the sketch-based wall definition, these enhancements significantly reduce design time. The ability to create several corner reliefs in a single operation contributes to the unmatched efficiency of CATIA V5 sheetmetal design.

V5.17 also greatly simplifies the complex sheetmetal part prototyping and strip layout processes with the ability to locally fold or unfold bends with stamping features, making the design fully compliant with manufacturing processes.

V5.17 extends the reach of CATIA aerospace sheetmetal design by enabling the process to handle more complex designs. Sheetmetal designers can select a ruled surface for the web and can design more complex joggles. In addition, V5.17 automates design validation and compliance with company standards, thanks to knowledge rules or checks based on characteristics curves or joggle parameters based on design tables.

CATIA V5.17 delivers high-end surface quality with the CATIA V5 reverse engineering portfolio. Dedicated to surface reconstruction, the new Deviation Analysis command lets the designer control the accuracy of generated surfaces. With advanced options, it performs distance analysis of a shape according to reference elements.

CATIA V5.17 ensures the "manufacturability" of non-ruled surface shapes. This release embeds a new breakthrough technology to support complex non-ruled surface flattening operations, enabling accurate manufacturing preparation of any designed shape, from rough fabrics in the textile industry to raw materials in aerospace.

High-performance design with knowledge capture and reuse encourages innovation

CATIA V5.17 further facilitates design innovation with core styling capabilities that enable designers to explore product ideas more rapidly while permitting last-minute styling modifications.

  • There is no limit to complex styled surface creation, including shapes with sharp edges, thanks to unmatched offset technology.
  • Powerful symmetry technology helps to achieve major styling productivity while conserving G2 continuity.
  • Linking subdivision elements enables the user to perform accurate global deformation on the components of several models in a single operation.
  • Integrating Generative Shape Design advanced operators optimizes the styling-to-design workflow.

CATIA V5.17 extends the unique 2D/3D associative approach for conceptual design and extends the 3D master approach by enabling fast and convenient display of product information, such as tolerances and annotations, in a familiar drawing layout within the 3D environment. It boosts conceptual design within the 3D environment by enabling designers to easily create in-context 2D sketches from the automatic detection of existing 3D geometry displayed in the view background.

Efficient, comprehensive, and standards-compliant CATIA V5 drafting capabilities always guarantee high quality when realizing drawing layout and dress-up, whether immersed in 3D or in a separate drawing document. It is continuously enhanced to cover specific needs, such as new support for customized symbols, strokes, and open type fonts.

CATIA V5.17 further promotes 3D as the master representation for part and product definition. Designers can define and manage standards-compliant tolerance specifications and annotations linked to the 3D geometry so that they are directly reusable for manufacturing planners and can be shared throughout the enterprise. Designers can easily present and share 3D tolerancing and annotation in a familiar drawing layout embedded in the 3D.

V5.17 enables the rapid creation of associative views from Functional Tolerancing & Annotation views or captures. Users can benefit from a more productive 3D annotation definition and layout process by realizing specific operations in a single step, such as directly managing the view ratio property for 3D annotation. It also provides a new mode that allows assembly annotations to be created inside a dedicated CATPart document.

Breakthrough technologies speed time to market

CATIA V5.17 brings new cutting edge solutions to speed time to market. It delivers a unique capability in the marketplace for creating cast and forged fillets in a single operation instead of through repetitive, step-by-step manual operations. Only CATIA V5 auto-filleting enables automotive powertrain and chassis designers to reduce the time for filleting complex parts for manufacturing from hours or days to minutes.

This release contributes to the enhancement of CATIA powertrain solutions with a suite of unique software. Mechanical design applications, especially functional modeling, with its process-specific behaviors encapsulated in features, allow designers to develop parts with a higher level of productivity and flexibility. CATIA V5 considerably reduces the costly and time-consuming creation and modification of the design.

In the context of hybrid shape creation with components coming from heterogeneous environments, such as in the body design process, CATIA V5.17 offers a powerful geometrical visualization option that enables engineers to perform accurate analysis of surface connections.

Integrated PLM maximizes collaboration

CATIA V5.17, with the ENOVIA VPM Navigator, boosts relational design by making it easier for designers to work concurrently on different part versions and to manage advance product effectivity and configuration. Designers can easily develop their own study, relying on approved version of parts made by peers, when "in-work" versions exist concurrently.

V5.17 enables designers to synchronize the links of their designs to other parts and to any versions of these parts. Designers can explore more cases for better understanding and can better anticipate changes, leading to faster time to manufacturing for more innovative products.

CATIA V5.17 broadens the scope of using the VPM Navigator for configuration management, with enhanced capabilities for the designer to filter and analyze configured products. Filters using a combination of date, range, milestones, or specifications can be defined, saved and modified. In addition, modification filters can be applied on top of these configuration filters.

CATIA V5.17 strengthens navigation and enhances user interface customization to search, understand, and evaluate product and change impacts, improving ease of use and the ability to interpret relationships and changes. It provides a new software openness to make it easy to define the display names of ENOVIA VPLM2 V5 documents for all generic CATIA V5 menus and windows as well as customized icons for ENOVIA entities displayed in the VPM Navigator tree. In the impact graph, naming of nodes can now be managed through boxes with multiple lines for better layout and enhanced visibility.

The SMARTEAM Reconciliator further facilitates interaction among companies and concurrent engineering across the supply chain through ergonomic enhancements, such as batch capabilities and advanced queries.

This release supports efficient collaboration with a richer 3D XML format throughout the product development cycle. Display of finite element analysis (FEA) output facilitates reuse and sharing 3D beyond the design office. In V5.17, 3D XML embeds in its format the FEA analysis output. This enables the analysis project manager or engineering specialist to benefit from this valuable information and to make the right product development decision without having an FEA seat.

More realistic viewing of 3D XML products makes possible efficient communication and marketing for the final product, thanks to rendering material support. Automation support, also new in this release, enables easy integration of the 3D XML player in custom applications, such as Web applications. It helps to optimize control over the 3D XML player for such functions as cross-highlight management and integrated multi-viewer representation.

Open and scalable architecture increases flexibility

Major new deliverables in CATIA V5.17 demonstrate the richness of the V5 PLM portfolio. New CAA V5 partners, and the addition of products from existing partners, continue to demonstrate the richness of the PLM portfolio:

  • IGE+XAO Group for full electrical PLM scenarios
  • ESI Group's fiber simulation for composites, with CAA V5-based PAM-QUIKFORM
  • A cost optimizer from Forming Technologies, Inc. for sheetmetal processes
  • New partner Kineo CAM for improved technology for automatic motion and path planning on the V5 platform on top of DMU Fitting

In addition to Kineo, Theorem joins the CAA V5 community to deliver native V5 integration of external data (from ProE, UGS, Ideas) within a V5 session. Theorem integration leverages dedicated CAA V5 APIs and infrastructure to improve data quality and consistency.

CATIA V5.17 delivers a secured and robust way to integrate data management discipline with CATIA V5, thanks to CATIA-XPDM Gateway. The gateway guarantees CATIA V5 behavior and data in a product data management context, thanks to thorough checking mechanisms. Its open development interfaces ensure high-quality integration of all types of product data management. In V5.17, further improvements put the gateway at the interactive integration level.

Check-in and check-out status can be applied and visualized in the CATIA tree structure. Design rules checking secures the data before saving it. The XPDM Gateway also provides a way to actually display the links among the CATIA documents.

CATIA Platform 1 (P1)

CATIA V5.17 enhances 23 previously announced products.

Mechanical Design

CATIA — Assembly Design 1 (5693-AS1)

  • Assembly Symmetry enhancement — Many designs are symmetrical, and symmetry can save lot of time and keep data consistent. Previously, the symmetry command was applicable only to the part body or external view. V5.17 removes these restrictions and improves the usability of this command. The assembly symmetry command now supports bodies, open bodies, geometrical sets, ordered geometrical sets, and axis systems.

    It is also possible to isolate a symmetry instance (with respect to geometry or position). This enhancement enables the user to remove the geometrical link between the symmetry instance and the original instance so that the original and symmetry instances can be isolated from each other.

  • Control of the sketcher Add to Display function — A new option is available in the Constraints and Dimensions options tab page. Any sketcher dimensional constraint created while the option is on can be manipulated as a knowledge parameter, in formulas or in rules, for example.
  • Redundant constraint warning message when creating or editing — This message helps the designer to optimize a constraint network by alerting the designer of an over-constraint condition when creating redundant constraints. Each time the user creates, reconnects, or re-activates a constraint that is fully redundant or that makes another constraint redundant relative to one that is already in the current network, an interactive message is displayed to notify the designer of this condition.
  • Scene reordering — A new command, Applicative Entities Reordering , is added to complete scenes management. This command enables the user to manually reorder applicative data entities under their respective application node in the specification tree. The command works exactly the same as it does in the DMU Navigator workbench.

CATIA — Part Design 1 (5693-PD1)

  • Ergonomics and productivity
    • Draft analysis without persistency — This enhancement provides the user with a freestyle draft analysis function.
    • Sketcher — This release improves the fix together and output profile functions and updates the contextual menu. These enhancements improve productivity and quality.
  • Quality
    • Threads — Additional parameters dedicated to thread features can now be set when using formulas.
    • Draft automatic untwist — This improvement extends the drafting capability for casting design, core and cavity design, and mold and forging design.
  • Process coverage
    • Split behavior improvement for multi-lump — This enhancement:
      • Implements the same behavior for a single solid and a lump of multi-lump solids
      • Decreases error cases, even if the split result is a null body
      • Decreases the behavior differences between B-representation face use and surface use
    • Sweep — This release introduces a Move Profile to Path option. This enhancement allows the user to create a rib or slot by moving the profile to the path.
    • Technological results — Enhancements in this release support the downstream processing of holes, threads, and user-defined features (UDFs).
      • Customer-defined knowledgeware parameters are now included in the technological information that is propagated for thread and hole features.
      • Technological information associated with UDFs is now propagated. Such information is essential to completing the design-to-manufacturing process for advanced features.

CATIA — Wireframe & Surface 1 (5691-WS1, 5693-WS1)

  • No Keep option when propagating a datum's status — While modifying a datum, its show/no-show status is transferred to the result datum. This capability fosters communication among designers.
  • New option for creating points — A point between two given points along a support can now be created by selecting the support (curve or surface). All points must lie on the support. This capability significantly improves productivity when working on the detailed design of complex parts.
  • Tolerant blend enhancements — This release adds:
    • Automatic smoothing of generated blended surfaces
    • Creation of continued blended surfaces even if boundary curves are of bad quality

    These enhancements shorten the tolerant modeling process cycle while assuring reliable surface quality.

  • Replace command — The Replace command is now available for generative design on the P1 platform. Users can now replace one geometric element with another. All elements based on the replaced element are automatically updated. This enhancement makes it easier to make updates when modifications occur late in the design phase.
  • Inversion management during replace — Inverted features are no longer shown in the tree for better associativity management. This enhancement also improves specification tree management, especially when using ordered geometrical sets (OGS).
  • Deactivate Components command enhancement — In V5.17, this improved command allows the user to manage aggregated elements and children. In this way, it is possible to deactivate elements within an ordered geometrical set or a geometrical set in a complex part for such purposes as protecting a part of the 3D model from an update.
  • Reorder command enhancement — This command now gives the designer true freedom to move elements belonging to an ordered geometrical set or body to any position within the specification tree to suit their own process.
  • New selective loading agent — In the visualization mode, only necessary parts are loaded in the context of the exact intersection of a very large product structure in the datum mode with a GSD plane. This enhancement results in significantly improved performance and reduced memory consumption.

CATIA — Generative Drafting 1 (5693-GD1)

CATIA V5.17 introduces a number of customer deployment enhancements.

  • Associative graphic dress-up reset command — This enhancement gives the ability to restore the original graphical properties of generated items that were overloaded. It also provides a set of tools for managing the defined associative dress-up properties. This associativity is optional to improve performance for scenarios where it is not required.
  • Back-clipping plane — This new behavior enables the definition of a 3D clipping object, limiting the 3D geometry used by the extraction process. This 3D clipping element is stored in the drawing document. The user can now define the 3D limits of the view to be processed in the generative drafting workbench. This new object is integrated by the View Update standard process. Using this new 3D clipping object will allow shipbuilding customers to easily work on a 3D slice in a 2D view or mechanical customers to simplify the geometry of complex parts in a view. (It enables the same capability as the CATIA V4 back-clipping plane.)
  • Detail callout text leaders — Text leaders can now be perpendicular to circular callouts. This new behavior enables the leaders for circular detail callouts to respect drafting standards. When creating a circular detail view, the leader associated with the callout remains perpendicular to the circle. The leader anchor point moves all around the circle to keep this perpendicular orientation. Circular callouts created before V5.17 are not affected.
  • Generated points — Generated points are named based on the name of the 3D point. A new generative view style parameter specifies whether or not the name of generated points should be inherited from the 3D representation.
  • Non-displayed clipping border outside of geometry — A new Clipping View command enables the user to hide the boundary of the clipping profile outside of the part or product geometry. There are two clipping view modes: The new Clipping View command uses a Boolean operator from the 3D view, whereas the Quick Clipping View command computes the view directly from the 2D projection. Either operation can be performed using a circle or a sketched profile as a callout.
  • Support of screw-nut standard representation (the screw being uncut while the nut being cut) — In a section view or a breakout view, a screw in a threaded hole is no longer considered to be a clash.
  • Raster views
    • It is now possible to display in the raster view the same colors as in the 3D geometry.
    • A new raster view option is available to deactivate 3D lighting. It provides two additional modes for shading options with default lighting sources deactivated. For the two existing shading modes, the two lighting spots modify the color appearance with reflection effects, but in some cases, it could be useful to have the true color. These new modes are:
      • Shading, no light source
      • Shading with edges, no light source

CATIA — Interactive Drafting 1 (5691-ID1, 5693-ID1)

  • Productivity
    • Area fill enhancements — This release adds the ability to:
      • Detect area fill profiles according to a new tolerance optimized for generative and sketched geometry
      • Systematically create isolated area fills on top of 3D generated geometry only
      • Modify the shape of area fills without loosing pattern customization
      • Manage support geometry deletion when deleting an area fill
    • Dimension leader enhancements — With V5.17, users can:
      • Lengthen or shorten the leader first part of Leader One Part and Leader Two Parts dimension representation by a manipulator, direct manipulation, or Edit properties

    • Fix together constraint — This constraint provides a way to easily manage a "group" of geometries as a rigid entity in any design phase. It makes it easy to manipulate a large number of elements and therefore increases productivity. It represents a major improvement for 2D designers, who usually need to manipulate many elements as a rigid body, in that they no longer need to fully constrain all elements.
    • Open type fonts (OTF) — This release adds support for the use of customer-owned OTF fonts in annotations. Kerning parameters can be applied to control the spacing between letters for text features. (Kerning applies to OTF fonts only.)
    • Stroke font print ratio — This enhancement ensures compliance with ISO 1398-2 for printing stroke fonts by extending the capability for managing stroke font thickness.
    • Minimum distance dimension — When selecting two curves, or a point and a curve, a new dimension type, called Minimum Distance, is now available in addition to the Distance type. The Minimum Distance type creates a dimension that is the absolute minimum distance between two curves or between a point and a curve. If this minimum exists at several different locations, only the first location (according to first curve parameterization) will be available as the anchor for dimension line extensions. This new dimension type is used to measure and display the minimum distance between two curves in a normalized way.

When the option is off, everything behaves as in prior releases, but when it is on, any element of the background is seen as being the view for the mouse.
    • Highlight propagation — V5.17 enhances highlight propagation. Prior to Release 17, when a 2D layout view was selected, all of its content was highlighted. If the view was visible in 3D, view content was also highlighted in 3D. If the view was visible in the background of 10 other views, view content was also highlighted in the 10 backgrounds. In such a use case, view content would be highlighted 12 times. Highlighting so many elements can take too much time when using 2D Layout for 3D Design as a design tool.

      The V5.17 highlight propagation enhancement significantly improves performance by allowing the designer to control the propagation of the highlight from the layout, the sheet, and the view to their sub-elements. Now, with a view selected, the propagation of the highlight can be switched off so that the view frame is highlighted instead of the view sub-elements. On the other hand, when highlight propagation may be needed for review purposes, it can be switched on.

  • Process coverage
    • Commands for creating and editing geometry in the view background — When sketching geometry in a layout view, it is now possible to detect and/or use geometries located in the view's background. The background geometry becomes the reference (but is not modified). This highlight dramatically increases productivity in the 2D conceptual design phase by enabling the designer to work on the entire product structure in 2D against a 3D background.
    • View creation from Functional Tolerancing & Annotation (FTA) view and capture — This function takes into account tolerancing captures in order to support customer 3D master processes. It provides the ability to:
      • Create associative 2DL views, FTA views, planes, or sketches
      • Create filtered 2DL views from FTA captures
    • Dimension clipping — The user can now create, modify, or remove a dimension clipping.

The capability to modify on the fly the dimension attachment (edge or center) delivers higher productivity and better usability.
    • Dimension leader enhancements — With V5.17, users can:

    • FTA view ratio property for 3D annotations for display scaling purposes — A new 3D FTA view ratio property allows the user to manage the display size of all the annotation and symbols that are defined in the view.
    • Open type font support — This release adds support for the use of customer-owned OTF fonts in annotations. Kerning parameters can be applied to control the spacing between letters. (Kerning applies to OTF fonts only.)
  • Process coverage
    • This release adds the ability to create assembly annotation sets inside a CATPart document.
    • Users can now define a fake value for curvilinear dimensions defined on electrical features.

CATIA — Tooling Design 1 (5691-TG1, 5693-TG1)

  • Batch generation of technological results (TR) — Release 17 provides a batch process to make it easy to generate all the technological results for a component and its drilled bodies for tooling assemblies that were created before V5.16. This batch facility lets mold designers benefit from the TR technology to maintain:
    • Tight integration between tooling and drafting/machining applications
    • The associativity between the plate to be machined and the tooling assembly design, use patterns, mirror, symmetry, and so on, in the definition of the tooling components while retaining technological information
  • Component insertion — This function is enhanced to make it easier for the tooling designer to classify tooling elements more explicitly in the specification tree.
  • Copy Reference is replaced with Isolate Component — This change enables users to copy elements independently without retaining the reference to the original element.
  • Replace References — This command makes it easier to efficiently manage the replacement of components, such as when changing references to all instances of the component or keeping the position/instance name in the specification tree. The command also makes it easier to manage the impact of replacing components.
  • A new Synchronization command is available for split surface reduction. It automatically updates all reduced split surfaces when changing the position or dimensions of a component.

CATIA — Sheetmetal Design 1 (5693-SM1)

  • Bend extremity — This new type of extremity can be used to obtain closed seam/mitered corners for a laser welding process.
  • Corner relief — V5.17 delivers automatic creation and view management for corner reliefs. The new function creates several corner reliefs in one operation and helps the designer by automatically selecting zones where the corner relief is needed. In addition, the sheetmetal designer can now design a corner relief directly in the folded (3D) view. Together, these enhancements deliver major productivity gains.
  • Local unfold — Improvements in this release enable the user to locally fold or unfold bends with stamping features, with an option to select all bending faces to unfold (or fold). This capability is particularly relevant to complex part prototyping and strip layout processes.
  • Recognition in the user interface — V5.17 significantly enhances recognition capabilities by enabling designers to preselect such geometries as a wall, a bend, or a stamp. In addition, the designer can define zones that are not to be recognized and can preview all the recognized entities.
  • Relief option for bridges — This option lets the user define a bridge directly using square or round reliefs.
  • Wall-on-edge — This function is significantly improved in this release by enabling the sheetmetal designer to define a wall-on-edge in context. The user intuitively defines most of the attributes of the wall-on-edge directly in 3D (height, width, limits on surface, and so on), as well as the bend properties. In addition, the user can define a sketch-based wall, which leads to significant design time reduction.
  • Mirror transformation — The user can generate in one click the mirrored parts of a design with automatic detection of the tear area.

CATIA — Structure Design 1 (5691-SR1, 5693-SR1)

  • Process coverage
    • V5.17 adds the ability to move an instance of a plate or shape to another location of the product structure.
    • Material management deployment is enhanced to make it functionally consistent with Structure Functional Design (SFD) and Ship Structure Detail Design (SDD).
  • Packaging — For piece part generation, Structure Design now supports attribute mapping from Ship Structure Detail Design (SDD).

CATIA — Functional Molded Parts 1 (5691-FM1, 5693-FM1)

  • Process coverage — Internal features can now be extended to the complete core definition. This enhancement changes the behavior of both the user-selected core shellable feature and the core feature so that their volumes are no longer bounded by the shellable volume. Internal features that remove material from the negative core volumes can now extend beyond the shell boundary. This enhancement improves usability by simplifying internal core features.
  • Productivity
    • Automatic-manual update mode switch — The user can now use an icon to switch the update mode between manual and automatic without having to select the mode from the Tools->Options menu sequence. The new icon improves usability, performance, and the productivity of advanced users by enabling them to switch the update mode in one click.
    • Display Generative Shape Design (GSD) features that were created using the contextual menu under the parent feature — This enhancement improves the structure of the specification tree.
      • GSD features created using the contextual menu are aggregated under the functional specification.
      • Functional features "own" a sketch if it used only by the feature.
    • Display only parents when editing functional features — This highlight improves the usability of contextual local modifiers by enhancing the reroute mechanism in the event there is an error in a local modifier. This enhancement is dedicated to editing and rerouting the local modifiers that use B-representation (B-rep) features:
      • Draft
      • Camfer
      • Fillet

      It enables the user to display the "creation context" of such a feature for the purpose of selecting or de-selecting the B-rep features used by it. It improves error management and productivity and helps the user to retrieve the creation context.

    • 3D selection of functional features — Users can now access the contextual sub-menu directly from the 3D view. This new capability allows the user to access the standard commands ( Activate/Deactivate , Parent/Children , Center Graph , Reframe On , Delete , and so on) from the 3D graphical view. It improves usability.

Shape Design and Styling

CATIA — Generative Shape Design 1 (5693-GS1)

  • Automatic computation of 3D corner direction — A new algorithm improves productivity by automatically computing the optimal direction.
  • New definition type for reflection lines — Using a given point ( O ), a skin ( S ), and an angle ( a ), the user can define a conical reflection line. The line is the set of points P belonging to the skin S that has an angle between the normal direction to the skin in P and the vector PO equal to a . The conical definition type creates a field of view that lets the designer quickly assess product comfort, such as the fields of vision in various directions from the driver's seat of a car.
  • Fillet quality management — The product now automatically reduces the number of internal sharp edges when generating fillets with a variable radius. This enhancement generates high-end surface quality (G1) to optimize design-to-manufacturing iterations.
  • No Keep option when propagating a datum's status — While modifying a datum, its show/no-show status is transferred to the result datum. This capability fosters communication among designers.
  • New option for creating points — A point between two given points along a support can now be created by selecting the support (curve or surface). All points must lie on the support. This capability significantly improves productivity when working on the detailed design of complex parts.
  • Tolerant blend enhancements — This release adds:
    • Automatic smoothing of generated blended surfaces
    • Creation of continued blended surfaces even if boundary curves are of bad quality

    These shorten the tolerant modeling process cycle while assuring reliable surface quality.

  • Inversion management during replace — Inverted features are no longer shown in the tree for better associativity management. This enhancement also improves specification tree management, especially when using ordered geometrical sets (OGS).
  • Replace command — The Replace command is now available for generative design on the P1 platform. Users can now replace one geometric element with another. All elements based on the replaced element are automatically updated. This enhancement makes it easier to make updates when modifications occur late in the design phase.
  • Deactivate Components command enhancement — In V5.17, this command is improved to allow the user to manage aggregated elements and children. In this way, it is possible to deactivate elements within an ordered geometrical set or a geometrical set in a complex part for such purposes as protecting a part of the 3D model from an update.
  • Reorder command enhancement — The Reorder command gives the designer true freedom to move elements belonging to an ordered geometrical set or to a body in any position within the specification tree to suit their own process.

A new axis reference definition allows the user to define an axis system for each individual sketch. This enhancement enables seamless integration of sketches within an entire product.

CATIA — Developed Shapes 1 (5691-DL1, 5693-DL1)

Free-form surface flattening — A new algorithm allows the designer to flatten non-ruled surfaces so that any product can be manufactured from flat sheets of raw materials. Wireframes (curves or points) can be transferred from the original surface to the flattened surface or vice-versa. This enhancement implements seamless coordination of design-to-manufacturing to stimulate innovation, especially in the shipbuilding and aerospace industries.

Product Synthesis

CATIA — Product Knowledge Template 1 (5691-KT1, 5693-KT1)

  • Power copy and user-defined feature (UDF) instantiation destination — This release improves productivity when instantiating a power copy or a UDF by letting the user choose where the objects are going to be inserted at the end of the instantiation.
  • 2D mode in the Comparison window — Users can now manage 2D mode functions in the Comparison window. In particular, they can synchronize 2D mode visualization between the reference CATPart and the working CATPart viewers.
  • Quick select in the comparison window — During power copy instantiation in the part comparison mode, an additional viewer, which displays the reference part used to define the power copy initially, is provided. Both viewers now react in the same way when visualization options are activated in the Quick Select command and when the user navigates using the command.
  • Input preview in the comparison window — CATIA V5.17 increases productivity when using the Comparison window, either during the instantiation of a power copy in step-by-step mode or when editing with the View Feature Structure command. All inputs are managed by the "like-scan" specific preview, making it easier to see them in 3D viewers.

CATIA — DMU Navigator 1 (5693-DN1)

  • Scripting and journaling — Scripting and journaling are now supported on the AIX® 64-bit platform for better user productivity.
  • Annotated views — Enhancements to annotated views for sections allow the user to display the annotated view simultaneously in different windows for better understanding of any issues.
  • VPS file generation — Productivity is improved with the ability to generate volume element (VPS) files of a geometry in batch mode (CATDMUtility). VPS files help to improve the performance of dynamic clash computations.
  • Performance, Capacity, and Scalability (PCS) — Performance is improved up to a factor of three for specific proximity query computation scenarios
  • DLName search — Enhanced in this release.
  • 3D XML — 3D XML can now be used to store all the information about a product's graphic properties, and also view and light configuration information.

Equipment and Systems Engineering

CATIA — Electrical 3D Design & Documentation 1 (5691-EC1, 5693-EC1)

This release improves the existing wire route simulation command for computing the cable length between connectors. The command computes the route and also displays the wire length. This enhancement simplifies route generation and is especially helpful in the fabrication and assembly industry.

Analysis

Analysis and simulation are key PLM solutions that can:

In addition to the product-specific enhancements described here, CATIA V5.17 delivers a new set of migration paths that are designed to effectively and efficiently migrate the CATIA V4 Analysis suite of products and configurations to the new CATIA V5 Analysis family. The migration schedule carefully maps critical analysis functions from CATIA V4 to CATIA V5 to offer a more competitive analysis solution for medium- and large-sized customers. CATIA — Generative Part Structural Analysis 1 (5693-GP1)

V5.17 extends the ability to check whether or not a geometry is ready to be preprocessed. The checking function can now be applied to geometries that do not directly support meshes, but which are associatively linked to the meshes, such as a geometry that constrains a mesh or a projection of a geometry onto a mesh. This new capability improves analysis productivity when using advanced mesh models.

Infrastructure

CATIA — Object Manager 1 (CO1)

  • Visualization
    • Color management for imported features — The "copy-paste as result with link" operation now keeps the color of the pasted element.
    • Full scene anti-aliasing soft — This enhancement improves the visual quality of 3D models. Several levels of quality are provided via the Tools->Options ( General->Display->Visualization tab). The enhancement permits visualization of smoother edges in the model.
    • Model rotation using the arrow key — This capability allows the user to modify the default rotation angle value that is applied when a rotation is processed by using a specific key combination. The angle value for rotations can be set using the Tools->Option menu. This enhancement improves productivity by minimizing user interaction.
  • Printing and imaging
    • Open type font (OTF) support — With V5.17, the open type font is supported. This enables support of the Microsoft™-Adobe initiative for standardizing fonts.
    • Print banner text size control — The user can now modify the size of banners directly in the banner tab.
  • Enterprise architecture — Minor improvements are implemented for C++ V5 statistics.
  • PLM infrastructure
    • 3D XML — 3D XML can now be used to store all the information about a product's graphic properties, and also view and light configuration information.
    • When scripting or journaling on the AIX 64-bit platform, users can now take advantage of VBA and CATIA journaling.
    • Academic model identification — This new capability flags CATIA V5 documents (CATPart, CATDrawing, CATProduct, CATProcess, catalog, CATAnalysis) saved with an educational license. A warning is issued if the model is re-opened with a standard license (a customer license). As soon as this flag is set on a V5 document, it is propagated for all operations performed on it.
      • File operations ( Save , Save as , New from , Send to ).
      • Copy/Paste — When copying a single object, the flag is propagated to the target of the paste. This is true for all Copy/Paste formats ( As Spec or As Result ).
      • Power copy.
      • Datum tool.

  • Knowledge and collaboration
    • Ordered geometrical sets — An option is added to integrate knowledge relationships in the linearity of ordered geometrical sets.

  • V5 Frame — This release enhances the selection process to trap selection persistency. The command is modal. Once the user has performed the selection, the command does not return to the former state. Instead, it becomes persistent, decreasing the number of user interactions required to perform the task.
  • Openness and 3D XML: Open and Save in 3D XML — Results from finite element analyses can now be saved as 3D XML.

CATIA — Product Data Filtering 1 (5691-DF1, 5693-DF1)

V5.17 improves the data to supplier exchange process with new support of 2D Layout for 3D Design (LO1) data. It enables additional filtering capability for the product data filtering part-to-part and product-to product application. This new option allows the transfer of all 2D layout data from a source document (CATPart or CATProduct) to a filtered document (the resulting CATPart or CATProduct).

CATIA — PPR PDM Gateway 1 (5691-PX1, 5693-PX1)

  • Check-in/Check-out status in the CATIA tree structure — The user now gets visual feedback, in the form of an icon in the CATIA specification tree, of the check-in/check-out operations related to a CATIA document.
  • Import links display at the document level — This enhancement provides a window for displaying the different links associated with a CATIA V5 document. It shows the document name, instance name, and the path of the subject part

CATIA Platform 2 (P2)

Mechanical Design

CATIA — Assembly Design 2 (5691-ASD, 5693-ASD)

Enhancements for Assembly Design 2 are the same as for Assembly Design 1.

CATIA — Part Design 2 (5691-PDG, 5693-PDG)

A new G1 fillet option avoids creating sharp edges in a variable edge fillet when one of the surfaces to be connected is not of a continuous curvature.

CATIA — Generative Drafting 2 (5691-GDR, 5693-GDR)

Enhancements to Generative Drafting 2 are the same as for Generative Drafting 1.

CATIA — 3D Functional Tolerancing & Annotation 2 (5691-FTA, 5693-FTA)

  • Process coverage — The tolerancing advisor now supports auxiliary/reference dimensions. This enhancement completes the coverage of ISO and ASME standards, where information (for ISO) and reference (for ASME) dimensions are defined. It also improves ease of use and productivity to the user, who no longer needs to use the Dimensions command and can work strictly within the tolerancing advisor. The following capabilities are provided:
    • A new information dimension option in the Limit of Size Definition panels.
    • Automatic creation of the syntax of information dimensions (between parentheses) when selecting the option.
    • New query information for oriented linear or angular dimension features. An origin symbol is displayed at the center of gravity of the geometric element. The symbol defines the origin of the dimension when selecting it in the 3D window or in the feature tree (only if the 3D Annotations Query On/Off Switch option command is active).
  • Ergonomics
    • For specifications presented in the alignment of a dimension (according to standard representation — dimension without a nominal value), both the specification and the dimension are highlighted when selecting the dimension.
    • The tolerancing advisor diameter icon is highlighted for an individual feature if the diameter tolerance is already defined for the pattern feature. The tolerancing advisor's red sizing icon illuminates for a selected feature whenever the feature has been previously defined as supporting size tolerancing, whether applied directly to the feature or to the pattern to which the feature belongs. This enhancement improves ease of use and helps the user obtain better quality in the geometric product specifications.
  • V5 Openness — CAA can now be used to obtain and set the precision, the decimal separator, and the trailing zero parameters of intelligent geometrical tolerances.
  • Quality — The user now has the same control over a constructed geometry during validity checking as when creating the constructed geometry. This capability provides better semantic control while ensuring that creation rules are improved to propose a creation only when the whole selection will conform to the expected constructed geometry to be created.

CATIA — Core & Cavity Design 2 (5691-CCV, 5693-CCV)

  • A new Chaining Edges command helps the user to select and create an outline made with a continuum of edges.
  • A new Pulling Direction Analysis command provides a graphical analysis of pulling directions with several ranges of draft angle values. The command improves design reliability by enabling the user to detect if any part will easily unmold.
  • The parting line editor regroups all the tools to rapidly define the parting line of a part. The user initiates the design with the chaining edges and reflect lines function and then completes it with the spline and cutting spline functions. The designer can then perform pulling direction and curve (connexity, tangency, curvature, and so on) analyses.
  • The parting surface editor is expanded to include a Ribbon option. This new option uses a direction element and a length value to create extrude surfaces, complementing the existing loft and extrude surface approaches. It enables the user to create a "ribbon surface" around the part to obtain a high-quality contact area for the closure of the mold.
  • The radii of the fillets of a surface model can now be reduced. This enhancement enables the designer to rapidly and easily identify and modify the fillet radii of the stamping dies prior to milling. This function significantly reduces cycle time for the designer.
  • A new surface simplification function allows the user to create a "light" surface that is close to the finished part and which can be used in place of the original surface during the die design phase.

CATIA — Mold Tooling Design 2 (5691-MTD, 5693-MTD)

  • Batch generation of technological results (TR) — Release 17 provides a batch process to make it easy to generate all the technological results for a component and its drilled bodies for tooling assemblies that were created before V5.16. This batch facility enables mold designers to benefits from the TR technology to maintain:
    • Tight integration between tooling and drafting/machining applications
    • The associativity between the plate to be machined and the tooling assembly design, use patterns, mirror, symmetry, and so on in the definition of the tooling components while retaining technological information
  • Component insertion — This function is enhanced to make it easier for the tooling designer to classify tooling elements more explicitly in the specification tree.
  • Copy Reference becomes Isolate Component — This change enables users to copy elements independently without retaining the reference to the original element.
  • Replace References — This command makes it easier to efficiently manage the replacement of components, such as when changing references to all instances of the component or keeping the position/instance name in the specification tree. The command also makes it easier to manage the impact of replacing components.
  • A new Synchronization command is available for split surface reduction. It automatically updates all reduced split surface reductions when changing the position or dimensions of a component.

CATIA — Sheetmetal Design 2 (5691-SMD, 5693-SMD)

Enhancements are the same as Sheetmetal Design 1.

CATIA — Composites Engineering 2 (5691-CPE, 5693-CPE)

  • Associative cut pieces — Cut pieces are now associative with the definition of the ply.
  • Butt Splice/No Splice — This option allows the user to define zones where an overlap (butt splice) or a splice is not allowed, such as for structural reasons. The cut pieces will be automatically generated according to these specifications.
  • Colored faces in the plies solid — This enhancement enables the user to employ a colored scale to identify each level of the solid created from the plies. This feature makes it easier to understand the design and for inner mold line (IML) reconstruction purposes.
  • Core sample — This release improves the results of core sample analyses of complex designs; that is, those combining such attributes as T- and U-shapes and stiffeners.
  • Fiber direction indicator — This command provides an interactive visualization of the theoretical fiber orientation at a given point.
  • DXF and IGES 2D labeling for manufacturing export — Labeling in DXF and IGES 2D files is expanded to include part name, ply name, material, and direction. This information is needed for nesting and cutting purposes in manufacturing.
  • Mirrored parts for opposite sides — The user can now generate in one click the mirrored parts of a composites design. The opposite side remains fully associative to the original side. This function is mainly dedicated to the manufacturing preparation stage of the composites process.
  • Nonstructural plies — This function defines plies as nonstructural elements (machined zones or adhesive layers) to permit unmatched stress analysis.
  • Point selection by screen indication — This enhancement lets the user interactively and rapidly define the seed point for producibility analysis or for core sample analysis.
  • Transition zone bridge — The transition zone bridge helps designers to easily and rapidly create an IML surface. The bridge automatically generates the surface from two nonfunctional zones (zones not linked to the preliminary design), one with the least thickness and one with the greatest thickness, and one transition zone defined by the designer from the plies. The bridge function significantly reduces the time required to create IMLs for complex products and complements the solid-from-plies approach.
  • V4-V5 migration of composites entities — This function offers an interactive way to easily migrate V4 models to V5 models, inclusive of such attributes as materials, geometry, and data structure.
  • Limit contour — This release improves the management of parallel lines in the limit contour function.

CATIA — Cast & Forged Part Optimizer 2 (5691-CFO, 5693-CFO)

  • Process coverage
    • Auto fillet — Automatic filleting represents a significant process improvement, especially in the design of cast parts. Previously, the process of filleting and rounding sharp edges to conform to existing features was a repetitive and time-consuming phase of the solid design process. This new capability can automatically round and fillet the sharp edges of a solid in a single operation, significantly improving productivity.
    • Fillet fitted on parting surface — This function provides a new delimitation for the constant edge fillet feature. It eliminates the step that is created on the connected edges that share a parting element of "both sides" drafted parts.
  • Ergonomics and productivity — New user-assistance graphics make it easier to perform draft-both-sides operations with greater reliability.

Shape Design and Styling

CATIA — Imagine & Shape 2 (5691-IMA, 5693-IMA)

  • Grouping subdivision elements — This new capability links points, curves, or subdivision elements to a single or to a set of subdivision elements to control subdivision deformation. This capability improves productivity significantly while propagating deformation throughout a product from a single reference.
  • Accelerating curve creation — This release:
    • Employs curve transformations (translation, affinity, and rotation) to offer more flexibility in reusing existing curves
    • Increases the refinement of created curves by allowing the user to define the number of arcs and the order for each curve
  • Simplifying edge management — Edges can now be used to:
    • Define a subdivision ratio of other than "1"
    • Define the number of sections to insert
    • Remove several sections resulting from a cutting operation

    These improvements provide new degrees of granularity to make it easier to manipulate subdivision elements.

  • Working Zone command — This new command lets the user isolate the specific zone to be worked on. The user can focus on the work area while protecting other areas that are not of interest. The command improves productivity by making it easier to work on complex subdivision elements.
  • Accelerating surface creation and deformation
    • Primitives can now be created in coincidence with the axis origin.
    • The origin of a primitive shape can now be explicitly defined in coincidence with a geometry.
    • A new option lets the user choose the degree of quality for circles (approaching a real circle definition) to create more accurate primitives that contain circular parts.
    • The position of a set of subdivision elements can be defined according to a geometry position.
    • Shapes can be changed locally by allowing selected vertices to move along their local normal direction.
    • A new option is available to move a set of vertices to a specific position.
    • A new Select All option speeds-up the selection process.
  • Surface offset compatibility improvements — Users can now offset an element having a face with connected sharp edges (collinear tangency corner). This technological breakthrough for offsetting elements with sharp edges is unique in the marketplace.
  • Symmetry management of subdivisions — Users can now create a symmetrical subdivision surface and keep the G2 continuity between the two sides. Each modification to the original subdivision surface is propagated to the symmetrical subdivision in real time. This capability improves productivity by allowing the user to create symmetries when working on complex products.
  • Availability of Generative Shape Design commands — To increase productivity and to optimize workflow in the styling phase, Generative Shape Design shape operations are now available within the IMA workbench. Wireframe and Surface 1 (WS1), Generative Shape Design 1 (GS1), or Shape Design 2 (GSD) is required to use the generative shape design commands.

CATIA — Generative Shape Design 2 (5691-GSD, 5693-GSD)

  • Real geometry visualization — A new option checks model geometry by visualizing the topological links between the faces of a shell and the edges of a wire. This option provides a powerful body-in-white design tool for analyzing connections when working with heterogeneous data.
  • New swept surface type for creating a swept surface with a circular profile — This new type generates a swept surface that is tangent to a given surface along a given curve lying on the surface. This new type facilitates migration from CATIA V4 to CATIA V5.
  • Parallel curvature — The quality of parallel curves belonging to a plane using laws is improved in this release, especially those using laws for vertical tangency. This enhancement enables high-end quality design of external component profiles in the automotive and aerospace industries for such elements as wing sections.

CATIA — FreeStyle Shaper 2 (5691-FSS, 5693-FSS)

  • Gauss analysis — A new option for deactivating the highlights on surface boundaries and a new color ramp display combine to enhance visualization ergonomics and to improve interaction with the Gauss Analysis command.
  • Enhanced support for Class-A processes — This release introduces significant improvements to optimize the workflow for Class-A processes.
    • Break command — The Break command is enriched with new types of cutting elements. The command can now use a surface or a plane to cut curves and surfaces.
    • New constraint command user interface — To optimize Class-A workflow, V5.17 offers a new constraint command user interface that:
      • Employs advanced options for accurately combining shapes
      • Provides a flexible environment while working in conjunction with the control points command
      • Allows the user to benefit fully from CATIA associativity to achieve significant productivity gains
    • New FreeStyle dashboard — This restyled command contains all the tools that are shared between FSS and Icem Shape Design. The new dashboard has been streamlined to support Class-A workflow optimization.

CATIA — Digitized Shape Editor 2 (5691-DSE, 5693-DSE)

  • Efficient management of several planar sections — The Planar Section command can now be used to select multiple elements. These elements can be clouds, meshes, surfaces, or volumes. Additionally, a new option allows the user to select several planes in order to compute sections according to the selected planes. Output elements can be grouped in:
    • One entity
    • By element, with each output linked to its input element
    • By plane, with each output linked to its cutting plane

    These enhancements improve productivity by creating several planar sections in one operation.

  • Multi-selection in the Export command — This enhancement boosts productivity by allowing the user to select more than one mesh/cloud element using the new multi-selection mode. A new option is added to enable the user to choose to export all elements into a single file or to export each element into a separate file.
  • Alignment process performance improvement — V5.17 introduces two new commands to streamline the alignment process and to ensure the repeatability of the alignment conditions.
    • The new Align by Best Fit command merges the former Align with Cloud , Align with Surface , and Align with Points commands into a single productive command.
    • At the same time, the new Align with Reference Point System (RPS) command enables users to freeze each axis of constraints independently. It can be used, for example, to check the tolerance between the nominal virtual product and the digitized physical product or for assembly mounting using the RPS process.
  • New formats in the Import command — The Perceptron, Opton, and tessellated 3D XML formats are now taken into account in the Import command.

CATIA — Quick Surface Reconstruction 2 (5691-QSR, 5693-QSR)

  • Optimizing automatic surface reconstruction — A new option allows the user to deactivate the G1 internal constraint to optimize the reconstructed surface definition. It preserves a very small fillet during reconstruction for better surface quality. This enhancement implements full control of the quality of generated surfaces to sustain company competitiveness.
  • New Deviation Analysis command — This command analyzes the deviation between a reference and points, or meshes, scans, or grids. It checks the quality of the generated surface to speed-up the alignment process.
  • Efficient management of several planar sections — The Planar Section command can now be used to select multiple elements. These elements can be clouds, meshes, surfaces, or volumes. Additionally, a new option allows the user to select several planes in order to compute sections according to the selected planes. Output elements can be grouped in:

CATIA — Automotive Body in White Templates 2 (5691-ABT, 5693-ABT)

This release adds the ability to create a mating flange based on a user-defined reference direction. The user can chose between two modes:

  • Manual — Define the reference direction explicitly.
  • Automatic — Activate a default reference direction, which is the normal direction.

When creating a two-sided mating flange, the user can link the second direction value to the first. This enhancement improves body-in-white productivity by enabling an accurate contact definition and fast propagation of mating flange specifications.

Product Synthesis

CATIA — Product Knowledge Template Definition 2 (5691-PKT, 5693-PKT)

Enhancements are the same as for Product Knowledge Template 1. CATIA — Product Function Optimizer 2 (5691-PFO, 5693-PFO)

This product is not enhanced in this release. However, upon its announcement in CATIA V5.5, it should have been noted that it runs only on the Microsoft Windows™ platform.

CATIA — DMU Navigator 2 (5691-DMN, 5693-DMN)

These enhancements are in addition to those for CATIA — DMU Navigator 1 and CATIA — Object Manager 1.

  • Cumulative snap — This release adds support for inverting by rotation. After snapping a component, it can be rotated along two related axes. This enhancement results in better product usability.
  • CATDMUBuilder — 3D XML can now be generated from an assembly. This capability enables the Navigator to handle large assemblies and increases the usability of 3D XML.

Equipment and Systems Engineering

CATIA — Electrical Library 2 (5691-ELB, 5693-ELB)

  • Contact and filter plug population in the same cavity — This enhancement delivers an automated process for inserting contacts and filler plugs in the same cavity in a single operation. This capability is especially useful in the aerospace industry, where as many as 100,000 wires and 200,000 filler plugs can be required for a single aircraft, and for other electrical detail design applications that involve connectors.
  • This release adds an API for creating supports.

CATIA — Electrical Wire Routing 2 (5691-EWR, 5693-EWR)

This release improves the existing wire route simulation command for computing the cable length between connectors. The command computes the route and also displays the wire length. This enhancement simplifies route generation and is especially helpful in the fabrication and assembly industry.

CATIA — Electrical Harness Installation 2 (5691-EHI, 5693-EHI)

  • Geometry clean-up — The user can now delete unnecessary elements (such as a "broken" publication) from a multi-branchable document. This improvement streamlines the process by removing unnecessary data from the multi-branchable. It improves performance for identified scenarios, such as 25 percent for an update.
  • Improved integration with the Flex Physical Simulation 2 (FLX) product — FLX computations now take internal splices into account for more accurate shape definition.
  • New knowledge rules
    • Knowledgeware can now check the re-partition of supports (curvilinear distance) on branchable segments for compliance with design and manufacturing rules. This capability improves compliance with enterprise standards and helps to optimize manufacturing preparation.
    • Knowledge rules can be used to check bundle segment electrical and geometrical connectivity consistency. This enhancement improves the flattening process by alerting the user when flattening is not possible.
  • Bend radius checking — More tolerant bend radius checking avoids mechanical splines on bundle segments for more realistic designs and better design management.
  • PLM process empowerment — Duplicate harnesses can now be stored in ENOVIA VPLM ENOVIAVPM V4 and V5. This capability enables the versioning and configuring of a harness in a PLM environment. It is particularly useful in the automotive and aerospace industries.

CATIA — Electrical Harness Flattening 2 (5691-EHF, 5693-EHF)

  • Existing flattened harnesses can be reused to reduce design-to-manufacturing cycle time. This enhancement is very helpful in the automotive and aerospace industries for harness documentation and form board design. This new capability uses the previously announced synchronization function that compares the difference between a new 3D harness document and the flattened document and propagates new changes to the flattening model according to option settings. However, the synchronization works through a flattening link and works only between the 3D harness model and the harness model extracted from the 3D harness model.

    This enhancement provides the capability to redo the flattening link between the selected flattened harness model and the selected 3D harness model so that the synchronization will work between those models based on the updated flattening links. When combined with the synchronization function, this new capability enables the user to generate a new flattened model with respect to the layout of existing flattened model (maximum re-use the existing design) with fewer operational steps (shortened lead time).

  • Roll and junction arrangement productivity enhancements lead to faster flattening harness layout editing. Enhancements to the Rotate command and new Bend and Roll commands foster document reuse and help the user to complete the layout process more efficiently.
    • An enhancement to the Rotate command allows the user to rotate a flattened bundle segment at a branch point by any desired angle and allows the user to align the flattened bundle segment with another bundle segment.
    • The new Bend command allows the user to bend the selected bundle segment at any existing intermediate point of the bundle segment. No split is done in the case of a bend. The behavior of this new bend is same as the existing R16 bend behavior, except for the UI enhancement, which allows the user to select a bundle segment as the direction of the bend.
    • The new Roll command enables the user to select the first point of the roll at any position along the bundle segment. It allows the user to roll the bundle segment in the selected roll plane, with a desired roll radius, roll angle, and without considering a minimum bend radius
  • The ability to synchronize multi-profile bundle segments is enhanced in this release. Improvements facilitate PLM integration by helping the user to complete the layout modification and drawing generation of a flattened harness that contains multi-profile bundle segments.
  • A new extract function delivers a more robust flattening process. Prior to V5.17, the 3D harness document was extracted using the New From capability of CATIA V5. The entire product structure and all reference products and parts were copied as new. The 3D harness model was not checked to ensure that the electrical data was valid.

    The new algorithm enhances the capability of PLM integration by helping the user to extract the model successfully. The user is alerted to any problems in the model during the extract step itself.

  • This release enhances the harness drawing process by automatically generating dress-up features.
    • Text template leaders now point to the ends of protective coverings.
    • If it is not already loaded, the electrical language dictionary is automatically loaded to ensure that text templates with electrical attributes are properly generated by the Automatic Generation command.
    • The Update Dress-up command now updates text templates created manually by the user.
    • 2D details showing support sections can now be generated automatically.
  • Mechanical parts, such as grommets and guiding support parts, can now be integrated into the harness design. This capability improves the process of harness documentation or form board design by visualizing the position of the mechanical part in the harness. It enables users to manage a new type of element.
  • V5.17 provides new CAA interfaces to allow users to create, to get, and to set attribute values for flattening parameters and also to extract and flatten a harness.
  • Harnesses containing closed loops are now detected and can be flattened.

CATIA — Electrical Cableway Routing 2 (5691-ECR, 5693-ECR)

  • Property analysis — The Analyze Item command allows the user to display the properties of parts. This enhancement provides an easy and productive way for designers to analyze design data.
  • 3D route (run) modification — Users can select a specific location at which to insert a node on a run segment. This enhancement can be used to edit the definition of a run by allowing the user to indicate where nodes are to be inserted on a segment. It makes it easier for the cableway designer to modify a run.

CATIA — Systems Diagrams 2 (5691-SDI, 5693-SDI)

V5.17 provides additional user controls for stretching a schematic network. This enhancement can be used in the process of developing and modifying their schematic design diagrams. This enhancement is completely integrated with existing schematic design practices and techniques and can be smoothly integrated into the customer schematic design process.

  • It provides the user with explicit control over which line segments of network extremities are moved versus stretched in network move operations
  • Move network operations respect the branch direction when moving a network that causes a branch segment to be stretched.
  • A move network operation to stretch a single segment line functions without adding new segments if the line function has the Locked Shape switch on.
  • Select command — Within the Select command, the user is now provided with the capability of pushing a branch line segment across the associated main run.

CATIA — Piping Design 2 (5691-PIP, 5693-PIP)

  • Property analysis — The Analyze Item command allows the user to display the properties of parts. This enhancement provides an easy and productive way for designers to analyze design data.
  • Split work package — This enhancement delivers new tools to facilitate the work package split process. The work package split is done by using the Transfer command. The user can choose one of the following new capabilities:
    • Break 3D runs at the extremity of a specific part or at the extremity of a spool. This option makes it easier to organize data in the specification tree by using the Transfer command.
    • Let the Transfer command automatically break the 3D runs where needed during the transfer operation.
  • Drawing generation — This release optimizes memory consumption and drawing generation performance. It allows the user to manage the drawing generation of large design assemblies.
  • Single line drawing customization — Additional graphics are added to improve the readability of single line drawings. The new symbols are based on industry standards. These specific symbols are added at the part connectors. With these symbols, the user can clearly identify when a pipe drops, rises, or rolls down. The user can turn this capability on or off using the generative view style (GVS) customization process. A dedicated keyword is introduced to allow the user to activate this capability.
  • Drawing customization — Up to 20 graphic representations of a part can now be managed using a GVS file. Previously, only three representations could be managed.

It also provides a realistic shape that allows the user to compute accurate interferences as these occur in the physical model. The length of a flexible tube can be computed based on its straightened length and shape.
    • Tubes can now be routed in 3D along any surface at an offset from the bottom or centerline of the tube. This function provides an easy way to route along an edge or a surface, making the flexible routing process more productive.

    Note: Use of these functions requires a license for CATIA — Flex Physical Simulation 2 (FLX).

  • Property analysis — The Analyze Item command allows the user to display the properties of parts. This enhancement provides an easy and productive way for designers to analyze design data.

  • Duplicate node checker — The checker automatically identifies duplicate nodes in a single mesh or in an assembly of meshes that are not connected to any geometry. The checker makes it possible to assess complex models for duplicate nodes, especially when importing meshes or during mesh assembly.
  • Free edge browser — A new command identifies and focuses on each free edge of a mesh. The browser increases the meshing quality, such as by determining whether or not an extracted 2D mesh is closed before using the tetrahedron filler.
  • Interference/Intersection check filter — This filter allows the user to select exactly in a complex model the set of mesh parts on which the intersection/interference analysis has to be performed according to a specific need. It can be used to improve control of meshing quality, such as by adapting the meshing for crash tests.
  • Enriched definition of the support of local specifications — The user can now select groups created under a mesh part to define a support for a non-associative element while generating a 2D/1D coating. This enhancement expands 2D/1D coating to orphan meshes to support the migration to the CATIA V5 analysis product family.
  • New option for simplifying geometry — A new option can be used to specify the reference value to be used to compute a simplified geometry. It allows the user to quickly iterate the mesh parameters without impacting the simplified frozen view of the geometry.
  • Quadrangle-only mesh surfaces — This new function excludes triangle elements when generating quadrangle meshes. It allows the user to control the element type during surfacic mesh generation. It is particularly useful for extruding only hexahedron elements, as required by specific industries.
  • Option to browse unmeshed domains — This function identifies, following a global meshing operation, each domain in which the mesh was too difficult to obtain on the first attempt. It improves productivity by speeding-up navigation across a model to find domains that must be re-meshed.

This capability is particularly useful for OEMs to check if the full structure satisfies internal load standards.
  • Laminate thickness for composites — The designer can now visualize the global thickness of a composite stack-up by elements.
  • Using 3D XML in the analysis process — 3D XML can now be used to capture pre- and post-processing analysis "images." The 3D XML format makes it possible to share these images with non-specialists outside of the analysis environment via a Web page, presentation, or document.

Machining

CATIA — Prismatic Machining 2 (5691-PMG, 5693-PMG)

  • Plunge milling — This release introduces a new operation to support plunge milling technology. Supported tool path styles include rectangular grids, a set of contours, and a set of points. Residual stock and the cutting tool (non-cutting diameter) are taken into account to compute the tool path. This operation leads to significant reduction in NC programming and machining time, especially for hard materials.
  • Thread milling — New thread milling capabilities enable conventional and climb-cutting from top-to-bottom or from bottom-to-top strategies to increase machining quality. Additionally, thread milling operations can now take advantage of thread milling tools that have several cutting levels to machine a thread hole in a single helix motion. These enhancements lead to a significant reduction in machining time and to improved machining quality.

CATIA — 3 Axis Surface Machining 2 (5691-SMG, 5693-SMG)

  • Slope area editor — This release enhances the slope area editor, which defines logical zones for finishing. The NC programmer can now:
    • Automatically remove small areas
    • Manually customize areas, such as by removing contours or details.
    • Use a new display mode to easily detect overlapping areas.

  • Integrated material removal and machine simulation using ISO code (including native ISO data generated outside CATIA V5) — Simultaneous, synchronized simulation of material removal and machine motion based on NC code generated inside or outside of CATIA V5 enables realistic simulation of the complete machining environment with collision detection between machine parts and in-process stock. This enables a final, virtual buy-off of the NC program and also allows the use of NC code created outside of CATIA V5.
  • Machined part analysis during machine simulation — The user may now analyze machined stock during integrated material simulation by accessing the Analyze , Video Measure , and Remove Chunks commands to validate the accuracy of the machined part. Use of this function requires a license for CATIA — NC Manufacturing Verification (NVG).

CATIA — STL Rapid Prototyping 2 (5691-STL, 5693-STL)

  • Tessellate command — It is now possible to select multiple elements with a single click or to select a part or a product to easily generate the mesh for a solid or surfaces. This usability enhancement results in significant productivity gains.
  • Multi-selection in the Export command — This enhancement boosts productivity by allowing the user to select more than one mesh/cloud using the new multi-selection mode. A new option is added to enable the user to choose to export all elements into a single file or to export each element into a separate file.

CATIA — NC Manufacturing Review 2 (5691-NCG, 5693-NCG)

  • Holder display management during replay — This enhancement allows the user to disable the tool holder display, providing a cleaner visualization of the NC tool path.
  • More compensation points — The user can now specify additional tool compensation points (for the end mill, T-slot, tap, ream, and thread mill tools) to suit shop floor methodologies.
  • Partial tool path replay — This option gives the NC programmer the ability to do a partial replay by selecting a start and finish point for the replay, either interactively or by keying in point numbers. The partial display makes it easier to understand the tool path, especially for complex/long paths.
  • Tool spindle speed parameter — The rotation speed of a tool can now be defined as the cutting speed (linear value) or spindle speed (angular value) to best fit the NC programming process and to take advantage of company know how.
  • Tool path editor — This release provides a new tool bar that regroups all the tool path editor functions:
    • Edit toolpath
      • Point/area
      • Rotation
      • Mirror
      • Connect
    • Split on collision
    • Create geometries
    • Check tool path length

    The new toolbar also makes it possible to edit several toolpaths, operations, or programs at the same time. These enhancements make it easier and faster to modify a tool path.

CATIA — Prismatic Machining Preparation Assistant 2 (5691-MPA, 5693-MPA)

CATIA — ENOVIAVPM Supply Chain Engineering Exchange 2 (5691-EWE, 5693-EWE)

  • Intermediate query capabilities are added for the reconciliation phase to improve user efficiency.
  • A new view (document view) is added. It presents documents to be reconciled as a tree of documents.
  • In addition to the standard queries made available in previous releases, users can now develop their own customized criteria for queries from an XML format they have defined.
  • Reconciliator usability and ergonomics are improved. A progress bar is now displayed when performing a global query, and the query can be stopped with an interrupt command.
  • The new document mapping from the VPDM4 graph view completes the mapping of product leaves, which was already possible in the CATIA view. Previously, a two-step operation was necessary to execute this task.
  • Pre-visualization of drawings is now possible to help decision-making during a comparison.
  • V5.17 delivers a new global set that automates the comparison mapping of the instance tree in the CATIA view and the instance tree in the VPDM view when the product structure is displayed. Documents at the leaf of the product structure (CATPart or CATProduct in a displayed publication) will be mapped only if Enable Document Mapping is enabled in the VPDM graph view.
  • A report of the reconciliation choices made by the user can now be generated. This report is created directly by a command that is available in the reconciliator. The layout of the report can be customized through definitions in an XSL document. (The document must be declared in the reconciliator settings.) The report is displayed in an HTML viewer. The viewer also allows the user to print the report.
  • V5.17 enables reconciliation of catalogs and CATMaterial to complete the information that can be exchanged seamlessly between OEMs and suppliers.

  • Joggle formula — The joggle formula is improved to enable the designer to feed joggle parameters (runouts) with formulas from design tables and to define knowledge rules or checks using characteristic curves as attributes. This enhancement further automates design validation.
  • Joggle on any support — The joggle function is extended to enable the designer to define any type of joggle offset surface (GSD surface). This improvement enables the designer to create more complex joggles.

CATIA — Composites Design 3 (CPD)

  • Associative cut pieces — Cut pieces are now associative with the definition of the ply.
  • Core sample — This release improves the results of core sample analyses of complex designs; that is, those combining such attributes as T- and U-shapes and stiffeners.
  • Butt Splice/No Splice — This option allows the user to define zones where an overlap (butt splice) or a splice is not allowed, such as for structural reasons. The cut pieces will be automatically generated according to these specifications.
  • Colored faces in the plies solid — This enhancement enables the user to employ a colored scale to identify each level of the solid created from the plies. This feature makes it easier to understand the design and for IML reconstruction purposes.
  • Producibility
    • Rosette transfer — A new option implements a more accurate rosette transfer strategy for such elements as tubes and U-shapes.
    • Point selection by screen indication — This enhancement lets the user interactively and rapidly define the seed point for producibility analysis or for core sample analysis.
  • Fiber direction indicator — This command provides an interactive visualization of the theoretical fiber orientation at a given point.
  • DXF and IGES 2D labeling for manufacturing export — Labeling in DXF and IGES 2D files is expanded to include part name, ply name, material, and direction. This information is needed for nesting and cutting purposes in manufacturing.
  • Mirrored parts for opposite sides — The user can now generate in one click the mirrored parts of a composites design. The opposite side remains fully associative to the original side. This function is directed mainly to the manufacturing preparation stage of the composites process.
  • Nonstructural plies — This function defines plies as nonstructural elements (machined zones or adhesive layers) to permit unmatched stress analysis.
  • Transition zone bridge — The transition zone bridge helps designers to easily and rapidly create an IML surface. The bridge automatically generates the surface from two nonfunctional zones (zones not linked to the preliminary design), one with the least thickness and one with the greatest thickness, and one transition zone defined by the designer from the plies. The bridge function significantly reduces the time required to create IMLs for complex products and complements the solid-from-plies approach.
  • V4-V5 migration of composites entities — This function offers an interactive way to easily migrate V4 models to V5 models, inclusive of such attributes as materials, geometry, and data structure.
  • Ply book integration — A ply book is the shop floor document that governs the draping process. The book includes all information required to perform the process, such as 2D geometries, ply manufacturing annotations, ply group, sequence and material names, direction value, rosette, and ply thickness. With V5.17, the designer can quickly generate an associative ply book that enables the manufacturing operator to easily and accurately locate the ply on the mold to avoid incorrect draping.
  • Limit contour — This release improves the management of parallel lines in the limit contour function.

  • Section usability — The user can now show the Result window of a section with the previous settings retained to improve the usability of the product.

DMU Space Analysis 2 (5691-SPA, 5693-SPA)

DMU Fitting Simulator 2 (5691-FIT, 5693-FIT)

This release delivers a number of usability and productivity enhancements to move, track, and shuttle operations.

  • Display the tree view for the selected objects in a move or shuttle activity. The tree can be scrolled up and down, and when a part is picked, its name is displayed in the preview window.
  • Allow the user to edit the analysis during a move or when creating a track. When defining a track, the Simulator now includes the interference specifications for all the parts in the same window.
  • Generate a track or a move activity on an edge of a part, as when moving a section to the edge of a part for gap analysis.
  • Allow the user to move or shuttle groups.
  • Display the distance traveled on the trajectory of a track or move activity during simulation.

DMU Kinematics Simulator 2 (5691-KIN, 5693-KIN)

Users can now select the different products involved in a mechanism by clicking on the mechanism and then opening the products directly. This enhancement improves the product usability, especially when working with several imported sub-mechanisms.

DMU Optimizer 2 (5691-DMO, 5693-DMO)

Enhancement of the decimation algorithm produces better surface quality. This enhancement also decreases the size of the model, making it easier to manage for such purposes as exporting.

Human Builder 2 (5691-HBR, 5693-HBR)

  • Improved user interface and manikin manipulation
    • It is now easier to place a manikin onto any surface.
    • Reports can now include status and input parameters.
  • Enhanced efficiency in creating more natural postures for the manikin as well as the hands
    • Optimization of posture selection, with enhanced internal inverse kinematics behavior and additional options for a more natural and fluid movement
    • Automatic manikin grasp function for creating a realistic hand posture quickly and easily

CATIA WLS V5

Additional details on previously announced functions: The WLS Companion Server facilitates deployment by eliminating the need to install the license function and complete user companion Java™ client on individual student machines. Instead, the Server runs these functions using a J2EE application server software, such as IBM WebSphere® or Apache Tomcat.

The standard WLS user companion installation, whether in a file standalone mode or HTTP page server mode, requires a full Java client and WLS license to be installed on each student client machine. The Companion Server consolidates these functions on a single machine to streamline the licensing process and to improve user companion response time.

CATIA Higher Education and Training (HEAT) program

Under the HEAT program, two configurations are available for qualifying institutions to order CATIA V5:

  • CATIA — Academic Discover 2 Configuration (5691-DIC)
  • CATIA — Educational HEAT Configuration 2 (5691-ED2)

When new CATIA P1 or P2 products are announced, they are automatically included in the ED2 configuration. When P1 or P2 products are withdrawn in a release, they are removed from the ED2 configuration.

These configurations are for academic customers only. Their use is restricted to non-business education and research activities. Models saved using these configurations are flagged so that a message is displayed when such a model is attempted to be read with a non-academic (production) configuration.

CATIA — Academic Discover 2 Configuration (5691-DIC): This configuration is the entry-level solution for academic institutions. Hardware requirements

Summary of changes for V5.17: This release updates related operating system requirements.

Common hardware requirements: The following requirements are common to all operating systems supported by this release. Platform-specific requirements are specified in subsequent topics below.

  • Required components and features
    • Disk drive: An internal or external disk drive (minimum recommended size is 4 GB) is required to store program executables, program data, the user environment, and to supply paging space. Installation of all CATIA V5 products requires 2.0 GB on Microsoft Windows, 2.4 GB on AIX, 2.7 GB on HP-UX, 2.5 GB on IRIX, and 2.3 GB on Solaris.
    • Memory: 256 MB of RAM is the minimum recommended for all applications. 512 MB of RAM is recommended for DMU applications on large assemblies and for the Digitized Shape Editor 2 (DSE) product. Requirements may be greater when large amounts of data are used.
    • Internal/external drives: A CD-ROM drive is required for program installation and for access to the online documentation, which can optionally be downloaded to disk.
    • Display: A graphics color display compatible with the selected platform-specific graphics adapter. The minimum recommended size for usability reasons is 17 inches. Minimum resolution for Windows workstations is 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024 for UNIX® workstations. When selecting a graphics adapter, hardware texturing capability is strongly recommended when using CATIA V5 products that use texture mapping, in which case the amount of texture RAM has to be adequate for the number and complexity of textures to be used.
    • Keyboard: A specific keyboard compatible with the selected installation locale may be required for national language support.
    • Pointing device: Three-button mouse. On Windows workstations, a two-button mouse may alternatively be used (the third button is emulated with a keyboard sequence). The three-button mouse is recommended for usability reasons. IntelliMouse (two buttons plus a wheel instead of the third button) is an alternative to the three-button mouse on Windows workstations. The wheel acts as the middle button to allow additional manipulations, such as panning and scrolling.
  • Optional components and features: For CATIA P2 and P3, SpaceBall or SpaceMouse, in addition to the standard mouse, can be used to perform graphic manipulations (zoom, pan, rotate). The required drivers are delivered with these devices. Support of these devices is also available with the DMU Navigator 1 and DMU Space Analysis 1 P1 products.

The robustness of the overall solution is dependent on the robustness of the operating system and the hardware environment used. Windows and UNIX hardware configurations certified by Dassault Systemes for running CATIA V5 products are published at

Although CATIA V5 products might run on configurations or with graphic adapters other than those specified for each of the platforms below, incidents specific to such configurations or adapters will not be accepted for support.

Hardware requirements for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP

Note: CATIA V5.17 is the last release to support Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition. Customers are encouraged to migrate to Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition.

  • System unit: An Intel® Pentium® III- or Pentium 4-based workstation running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition or Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition.
  • Graphics adapter: A graphics adapter with a 3D OpenGL accelerator is required.

    Note: Graphics performance on local transformations (panning, zooming, rotating model) will depend on the selected graphics adapter. The graphics adapter should have the following capabilities:

    • 24-bits, true color, double buffered visual.
    • 24-bits, Z-buffer.
    • Stencil buffer.

Product-specific software requirements for CATIA P2

  • CATIA — V4 Integration 2 (V4I) requires, on the CATIA V5 client, for interoperability with CATIA V4 CDM and ENOVIA VPLM ENOVIAVPM:

Specific software requirements for CATIA WLS V5

Access to the companion desktop — Companion desktop access is accomplished using the same browser requirements as CATIA V5 (refer to the Access to product information section). The Java plug-in (JRE at a minimum level of 1.5) is required to visualize the different types of simulations (Show Me, Discover It, Try It, and the Quiz) and to allow for automatic model loading from CATIA.

  • An installation of CATIA V5.17, though not a strict requirement, is recommended to practice the provided exercises automatically loaded by the User Companion Desktop in the active CATIA session.
  • For the CATIA User Companion for V4 Mechanical Design product, an installation of CATIA V4 at level R2.1 or earlier is recommended to practice the provided exercises automatically loaded by the User Companion Desktop in the active CATIA session. For software requirements, visit

WLS license management — Licenses can be managed either using standard CATIA V5 licensing or by using the J2EE Companion Server. For standard licensing, refer to the Prerequisites for the license management environment section. Requirements for the J2EE Companion Server are:

  • Application server setup — The application server used must support Servlet 2.4 and JSP 2.0 and must be able to handle the Companion Server WAR or EAR files. These files are copied during installation if the application server option was selected during the installation procedure. The server setup operation depends on the application server used and must be done by the system administrator.
  • Companion application setup for license serving — The application server machine must be able to access WLS licenses, and licenses must be available to this server machine. For the Enterprise Option, the total number of licenses must be equal to the maximum number of students that will be connected at the same time to the application server.

Companion Development Studio — The Companion Development Studio is designed to communicate with other applications. The Companion Development Studio Product (5691-CDS) requires:

The following are not requirements, but are recommended to take full advantage of the product.

  • Access to one of the following browsers is mandatory for the preview of screens:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Microsoft VM version number 3158, at a minimum)
    • Mozilla 1.7 for AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris and Mozilla 1.4 for IRIX

    Note: Access to the screens developed with the Companion Development Studio might be accessible directly through the Companion Desktop. The Companion Desktop has been a license key managed product available with any WLS entry configuration since V5.9. Installation of any WLS standard configuration will provide the Companion Desktop license key and will allow access to customer-developed screens and skillets.

  • Access to Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word (version Office 2000) through OLE automation.

Note: Although different versions of Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word may work, incidents specific to other than the versions specified in the previous text are not eligible for support.

Access to product information: Product information is delivered with the product CDs in HTML format. An HTML browser is required to access this documentation. Online documentation may be installed and used only in the same supported operating environments as CATIA V5.

  • In a UNIX environment
    • For AIX, HP-UX, or Solaris — Mozilla 1.7 with the Java plug-in installed
    • For IRIX — Mozilla 1.4 with the Java plug-in installed
  • In a Microsoft Windows environment, one of the following browsers is required:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer at a minimum level of 6.0
    • Mozilla 1.7 with the Java plug-in installed

In addition to a Java-enabled Web browser, the Java Plug-in at level 1.5 is required for all platforms except IRIX, which requires level 1.4, to search online documentation.

Although access to the online documentation might work on other HTML browsers, incidents specific to browsers other than those specified are not eligible for support.

Note: Improvements in HTML searching and printing capabilities eliminate the need to duplicate product information in the Portable Document Format (PDF) format. PDF CDs are therefore no longer included in the CATIA V5 softcopy collection kit.

Prerequisites for the license management environment: Microsoft Windows workstations must have an active LAN card (Ethernet or token ring) and TCP/IP installed and properly configured, even in the case of nodelock keys, though for nodelock there is no need to have the workstations connected to the network. No additional license management software is required when accessing nodelock license keys.

IBM License Use Management (LUM) is required to serve concurrent license keys across a network. A LUM configuration file (i4ls.ini) is required on CATIA V5 clients to access concurrent license keys from these servers. Server and Nodelock license management mechanisms are available for CATIA V5 P1, P2, and P3 on all supported operating environments.

IBM LUM level:

  • V4.6.8.3 is the certified, recommended level.
  • V4.6.5 is the minimum level for UNIX, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition, and Microsoft Windows XP license key servers.

    Notes

    • CATIA V5 no longer supports Microsoft Windows Server 2000 or Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Customers are encouraged to migrate to Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
    • CATIA V5.17 is the last release to support Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition. Customers are encouraged to migrate to Microsoft Windows XP.
  • V4.6.7 is the minimum level for Windows Server 2003 license key servers.
  • V4.6.5 is the minimum level when the High Availability Licensing (HAL) mechanism offered by LUM is used.
  • V4.6.7, or later, is required when the Concurrent Offline Licensing mechanism offered by LUM is used.
  • V4.6.8 supports LUM service across a firewall and other new features.

Macro replay capabilities: CATIA V5 has built-in macro record and replay capabilities. For UNIX, the interpreter is VB Script 3.0 from Mainsoft. Its components are included in CATIA V5 as shared libraries.

For Windows, the interpreter is either:

  • VB Script at a minimum level of V5.0. It is delivered with Microsoft Internet Explorer. VB Script libraries at level 5.0.0.3715 are delivered with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or at later levels with later versions of Internet Explorer. Use of VB Script is recommended for developing Microsoft Windows- and UNIX-compatible macros.
  • Microsoft VisualBasic for Applications (VBA) at a minimum level of 6.0. VBA is delivered and installed by default with CATIA V5.

Printer and plotter support

  • UNIX — CATIA V5 supports the following plotter/printer languages:
    • CGM-ISO, ATA, CALS
    • Hewlett Packard HP-GL/2-RTL and HP-GL or IBM-GL subsets
    • OCE Graphics GPR50: VDF plotting routines
    • PostScript
  • Windows — Printers and plotters are supported through the vendor's drivers for the targeted printer or plotter relative to the targeted version of the operating system. Contact the printer or plotter vendor for requirements and support.

Batch monitoring using WebSphere MQ (WMQ) (formerly MQSeries®): Using WMQ communication tools, some batch operations can be launched remotely. When implemented at the batch level, this optional feature requires WMQ at minimum level 6.0. For availability of client and server components on supported platforms, visit

WMQ Client is required on systems where the transaction is initiated. WMQ Server is required on systems where remote batches are executed.

CATIA V5 general packaging principles

  • A CATIA P1 product or a CATIA P1 configuration requires or must include (in the case of configurations) CATIA — Object Manager 1 (CO1). P1 products can be used on P2 or P3, and in such cases, they operate with CATIA — Object Manager 2 (COM) or CATIA — Object Manager 3 (CO3), respectively.
  • A CATIA P2 product or a CATIA P2 configuration requires, or must include (in the case of configurations), CATIA — Object Manager 2 (COM). P2 products can be used on P3, and in such cases, they operate with CATIA — Object Manager 3 (CO3).
  • CATIA — COM 1 to 2 Extension (5693-C12) allows all P2 products to be added on to P1 configurations. The C12 product effectively upgrades the P1 infrastructure (CO1) to the P2 infrastructure (COM). The C12 product does not change the underlying P1 configuration; included products remain P1. The C12 product can be used as a shareable (5691-C12) or add-on (5693-C12) product.
  • A CATIA P3 product or a CATIA P3 configuration requires or must include (in the case of configurations) CATIA — Object Manager 3 (CO3). P1, P2, and P3 shareable and add-on products are available to P3 configurations as shareable or add-on products.
  • License keys for CATIA configurations are acquired and released for the total configuration.
  • The functions within a configuration cannot be shared.
  • A configuration is required for each CATIA V5 seat.
  • CATIA V5 add-on and shareable products may require prerequisite products that are not included in a standard purchased configuration. When a prerequisite product is not included in the selected standard configuration, both the AOP and its prerequisite products must be purchased and included as AOPs within a custom configuration. Prerequisites for shareable products can be satisfied by a standard configuration, by an AOP within a custom configuration, or by a shareable product.
  • CATIA — V4 Integration 2 (V4I) is included in all P2 and P3 configurations, and CATIA — V4 Integration 1 (V41) is included in all P1 configurations.

CATIA V5.17 delivers a new set of upgrade paths that are designed to effectively and efficiently upgrade the CATIA V4 Analysis suite of products and configurations to the new CATIA V5 Analysis family. The upgrade schedule carefully maps critical analysis functions from CATIA V4 to CATIA V5 to offer a more competitive analysis solution for medium and large customers.

The product upgrade charge applies to orders for a replacement product when it replaces a predecessor product that was obtained for a PLC5/recurring charge. The predecessor product is discontinued upon installation of the new version. For purposes of data model migration and validation, a customer may continue to use the predecessor product for up to three months without IBM approval, but may not use both the new version product and the predecessor product simultaneously for productive purposes at any time. If both licenses are used simultaneously the customer will be subject to the full PLC and recurring charges that apply to the replacement program, as well as the recurring charges applicable to the predecessor program. The three-month parallel usage of the replacement and predecessor product may be extended to more than three months on an individual basis with prior IBM approval.

Configuring orders

Note: This section describes how to configure orders for CATIA V5. For CATIA WLS V5, refer to Software Announcement 202-139 , dated June 11, 2002.

To configure orders, specify the platform feature number(s) specified below with a quantity equal to the number of users.

Note: The following platform feature numbers apply only to 5691 program numbers; they do not apply to 5693 program numbers.

CATIA V5 system program order (SPO)

CATIA V5 programs for all platforms (UNIX and Microsoft Windows) are shipped under the 5628-ACN System Program Order. The SPO is required for all program shipments and future updates.

Initial orders placed for a program type 5691 without a corresponding order or MES for the 5628-ACN SPO will either fail order validation, or will not generate a media shipment. Each customer number must have its own SPO.

Initial orders: When ordering the first 5691 configuration for CATIA V5, an order must also be placed for the 5628-ACN SPO. Both the 5691 program order and the SPO must be for the same CPU system type/system number and must have the same scheduled shipment date.

Subsequent orders: The SPO must have a feature number for every CATIA V5 configuration that is installed or on-order. Therefore, when a configuration that was not previously installed is ordered, the SPO must be updated.

To update an on-order system: When a license for a new 5691 program is ordered for an on-order system, the 5628-ACN SPO must be updated to reflect the feature number of the licensed program desired. Also, for asset registration and billing purposes an order for the individual licensed program type 5691 is required.

To update an installed system: When a license for a new 5691 program is ordered for an installed system, the 5628-ACN SPO must be updated to reflect the feature number of the licensed program desired.

CATIA WLS V5 system program order

The following no-charge program feature numbers are used with the 5628-WLS System Program Order to show which configurations and products are installed. This information is used for shipment of media. The maximum quantity of each of the features that may be specified is one for each of the 5691 or 5795 programs.

Customization options: Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order to specify the delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

For example, if publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then the publications will ship with the next release of the program.

Note: Features pertaining to documentation do not apply to WLS.

Expedite shipments will be processed to receive 72-hour delivery from the time IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) receives the order. SDF will then ship the order via overnight air transportation.

Unlicensed documentation: For CATIA V5, one English softcopy publication CD-ROM is automatically included in all shipments. National language versions (NLVs) of the softcopy publications in French, German, Italian, and Japanese will be available after general availability at no charge. To order, specify the language using the feature numbers below. Only one additional copy of a kit can be ordered per license.

The license management model

CATIA V5 license management model

CATIA controls the number of concurrent users of a CATIA configuration or product, according to the number of license keys acquired for the configuration or product.

CATIA V5 delivers identical license management mechanisms on UNIX and Windows environments, based on IBM License Use Management (LUM). The following license management principles apply:

  • A CATIA V5 configuration (standard or custom) will require a license key. License keys for CATIA V5 configurations are acquired and released for the total configuration. The products within a configuration cannot be shared.
  • Each CATIA V5 shareable product will require a license key, in addition to one for the prerequisite configuration and any prerequisite product, if applicable.
  • In all cases, CATIA configuration license keys are acquired at the beginning of the process and are released at its termination.
  • CATIA V5 add-on and shareable products may require license keys for prerequisite products that are not already included in a standard configuration. Prerequisites for shareable products can be satisfied by a standard configuration, by an AOP within a custom configuration, or by a shareable product. However, because all AOPs are defined within one custom license key, any AOP prerequisites must be satisfied by either a standard configuration or by other AOPs purchased and defined within the same custom configuration.

CATIA V5 can be used in three license management modes: nodelock, with concurrent usage of license keys on a network, or concurrent offline license management.

Nodelock usage: The use of a local display is mandatory for CATIA V5 usage in nodelock mode. There is no limit to the number of CATIA V5 processes launched for a given license key (configuration or product). For instance, a user can launch the following simultaneous processes:

  • A V5 interactive session
  • A V5 process executed through an OLE container application
  • Replay of macros recorded from captured sequences of V5 user interactions

In the nodelock mode of operation, only one CATIA license key per configuration and shareable product can be registered per machine, and only one CATIA user can run at a time on that machine. If multiple license keys per configuration or shareable product, or multiple users on a single machine, are required, refer to the Concurrent usage section.

Concurrent usage: A user on one machine on one display uses one license key per configuration or shareable product used, regardless of the number of processes. If the display changes, then an additional license key is taken for the corresponding process.

Dynamic license management: CATIA shareable product license keys can be acquired and released during the session. (The ability to acquire and release licenses is not available for configurations.) Shareable license keys acquired at the beginning of the session cannot be released before the end of the session; only license keys dynamically granted upon user request during the session can be released during the session.

Concurrent offline license management: A concurrent license key control technique is available via the LUM server. It gives CATIA, ENOVIA DMU, DELMIA, and RADE applications running on a Windows laptop the ability to disconnect from the license key server for a specific period of time. During the checkout period, the server license key is unavailable for use by another concurrent user. This feature is designed to add additional flexibility to a user's work environment. It is offered to accommodate short-term travel needs and collaboration while away from a fixed office environment or server connection. All ICA terms and conditions, including cross-border licensing terms, are unchanged, and users will check-out and check-in license keys at their home server, where rules and procedures are controlled by LUM.

Note to users of the following ENOVIA SmarTeam-branded CATIA integration products:

  • CATIA Team PDM Configuration (TDM)
  • CATIA Integration Product (CAI)
  • CATIA Web Team PDM Configuration (TDW)

These ENOVIA SmarTeam products do not support dynamic or concurrent offline license management. Licenses for these products are acquired dynamically when the function is invoked from CATIA and may not be released until the CATIA session is ended.

Educational allowance available: The standard educational allowance does not apply to CATIA V5 and CATIA WLS V5 products. However, these products are available in several configurations under the CATIA Higher Education Academic Training (HEAT) program. Refer to Education support for details.

Program services: Program Services offer a method of reporting code-related problems for CATIA V5 and WLS licensed software products. Program Services are available electronically using the problem submission process at the PLM Technical Support Web site at

If you have not yet associated the licensed IBM customer number to your IBM ID, you will be prompted to do so when accessing the problem submission facility.

When using Program Services, the problem report is submitted via the PLM Technical Support web site; all subsequent communications will be via e-mail. The response time for these problem reports, regardless of the severity, will be within two business days. All communications must be in English.

Not all options of the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technical support e-services are available in all countries.

If the problem reported is not known to be a code-related problem, the customer will be informed that work will continue on it provided the customer has ECSR (Electronic Customer Support Representative) enhanced support (reference PRPQ 5799-C88) with the CATIA support feature. Enhanced support for WLS is included in the base product's feature code; no separate enhanced support is required.

Preventive Service is delivered through the next release of CATIA V5 products. The new release also includes corrections to problems, depending on the time of their submission and their severity.

During the Program Services period, Corrective Service for CATIA V5 releases is delivered through service packs on a regular basis. A service pack includes corrections for Blocking Problems in production systems reported on this release and all corrections available for all components at the time it is built. Service packs are provided at the same time for all platforms currently supported. Each service pack supersedes the previous one and may be installed on top of the released level or on top of a previous service pack. (The exception is WLS products where Corrective Service is provided in the next release of the product. No maintenance for WLS products is provided in the service packs.)

Customers may request a correction via a service pack for Blocking Problems. A Blocking Problem is defined as:

  • A problem that stops production: The customer is currently using the level for which a fix is requested in a production environment.
  • A problem that prevents migration: The customer must provide the migration plan.
  • A problem that halts testing of a given level: A fix will allow customer to continue the testing.
  • Installation problem: A problem that prevents the customer from installing or using the product.
  • Regression: Problems reported as regressions may be due to an operation that was being performed erroneously or created incorrect data with a previous release and the current release no longer permits these operations. Therefore, each problem reported as a regression must be evaluated. True regressions will be handled as Severity 1 problems.

Note: Customers experiencing problems with IBM License Use Management (LUM) products when used with CATIA V5 products may report these problems through PLM product support. Note this only applies when the LUM product is being used in conjunction with a CATIA V5 product and the CATIA product is within its support period. LUM products are not included in the enhanced support offering; LUM problems will receive the Program Services level of support and must be submitted via the Problem Reporting process at the PLM Technical Support Web site at
