Description

WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks for Multiplatforms, V2.1 combines integration-layer and network interface-layer functionality, using service-oriented architecture (SOA), while providing a highly flexible messaging infrastructure for financial applications. V2.1 delivers the foundation for SWIFTNet Phase 2.

The shared services offered by WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks include services to centralize common tasks:

  • Access control
  • Recording audit data
  • Event handling and logging

These shared services also offer the means to centrally customize and administer the entire system, which helps make operating your IT environment more efficient and cost-effective. You can quickly integrate new applications, making existing applications easier to maintain. This can lead to significant cost reductions.

Key functions of the shared services include:

  • Ability to validate, authenticate, and process SWIFTNet FIN messages
  • Real-time and Store-and-Forward (SnF) InterAct message processing
  • Transfer and compression of files over FileAct
  • Single window to SWIFTNet that helps reduce the complexity of network operations
  • Message warehouse based on a search-optimized DB2® database that stores messages and information from messages into a DB2 database, enabling users to quickly locate a specific message
  • Audit and event-logging capabilities that you can use to collect information about all message-related data, user-related activities; and system activities, and can make that information available for operator or management review
  • Role-based access control with double authorization (two persons are required) for all security-relevant administration tasks, which greatly enhances overall security
  • The ability to segregate data by organizational units, which is indispensable to financial service providers who serve several financial institutions

Product structure

WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks for Multiplatform, V2.1 consists of a Base feature and the following extended features:

  • Support for SWIFTNet FIN
  • Bridge for SWIFTNet
  • Support for SWIFTNet InterAct
  • Support for SWIFTNet FileAct
  • Message Bulking Facility for SWIFTNet FIN
  • Financial Message Transfer

The Base feature delivers services such as:

  • Event monitoring with notification service
  • Event recording and administration
  • Timer services
  • Message audit service
  • Accounting services
  • Message warehouse services
  • Configuration and customization definition services
  • Security services

The extending features use the base services and provide specialized functions for different functional areas of message and file handling, and processing.

The Support for SWIFTNet FIN feature delivers services that allow clients to send and receive FIN messages and corresponding acknowledgements via the Secure IP Network (SIPN):

  • Implements a SWIFT computer-based terminal (CBT)
  • Processes FIN messages from any source, including MERVA applications. This enables existing MERVA applications to run unchanged, protecting your investment in such applications
  • Carries out FIN message validation for all message types and implements the SWIFTNet FIN protocol, including the Regional Processor (RP) User Resync protocol
  • Lets you operate and monitor a large number of SWIFTNet FIN logical terminal sessions
  • Supports high availability by defining groups with shared Logical Terminals (LTs) for workload sharing and take over in failure situations
  • Utilizes SWIFT User Security Enhancements (USE) services such as Secure Login and Select (including SLS key request/response procedure) and Bilateral Key Exchange (BKE)
  • Records Command Audit for Secure Transmission Key (STK)
  • Configures, administers, operates, and monitors a large number of SWIFTAlliance Gateways (SAGs) from WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks and provides SAG event template management
  • Issues SWIFTNet administration commands such as Local Registration Application (LRA), Key Management Authority (KMA), and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
  • Supports TARGET2 authentication solution
  • Provides message counting for accounting purposes

The Bridge for SWIFTNet feature is a server-based, one-time-charge feature for the usage of the local (MERVA-less) authentication function within the Support for SWIFTNet FIN feature.

The Support for SWIFTNet InterAct feature delivers services to send and receive requests and responses as InterAct messages via the Secure IP Network (SIPN). InterAct messages can be sent in either of the following ways:

  • Real Time: Each message is sent directly from the sender to the receiver.
  • Store and Forward: Each message sent from the sender is stored at the receivers SWIFTNet SnF queue, from which it is retrieved by the receiver

Support for SWIFTNet InterAct delivers services to send, receive, and process InterAct messages between financial applications via the SIPN, delivering the following services:

  • Direct InterAct service supporting real-time message processing and store-and-forward message processing
  • Enhanced InterAct service supporting store-and-forward message processing

These InterAct services provide the following functions:

  • Access control
  • Auditing

The enhanced InterAct service supporting store-and-forward message processing additionally supports the following functions:

  • SWIFT protocol handling, which relieves business applications from InterAct protocol handling
  • Message storage
  • Message transformation on behalf of the using client and server applications includes the following capabilities:
    • Receive business messages, place them in the payload of an InterAct SnF message, and send them to the SIPN
    • Extract business messages from the payload of the received InterAct SnF message and pass them on to the appropriate business application

The Support for SWIFTNet FileAct feature enables applications to use SWIFTNet FileAct to send and retrieve files via the SIPN. A command service is available. It manages access to the FileAct directory, and processes and schedules file transfer commands issued by an application. These commands are:

  • PUT: Puts a file into one of the following:
    • An emission directory, from which the SAG file transfer agent (FTA) will automatically transfer file to a FileAct counterparty.
    • A download directory, from which a FileAct counterparty can retrieve it. You can specify whether the file is to be compressed or run through a code conversion routine before transmission.
  • GET: Gets a file that was retrieved by the FTA and copies it into a file. You can specify whether the file is to be decompressed or run through a code conversion routine after it is transmitted.
  • GETPARMS: Retrieves the file transfer parameters and returns them to the application.
  • RETRY: Retries a failed file transfer for which the automatic retry limit has been reached.
  • LIST: Lists all file transfer entries that have not yet been deleted and that meet the specified criteria, such as the date and time, status, and transfer direction.
  • DELETE: Deletes all files related to a single file transfer from the FTA directories, and deletes the corresponding entry from the FileAct database.

Events generated during a file transfer are processed by the FileAct Event service, and can be monitored and saved in the WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks audit database.

File transfer is supported in both real-time and SnF mode.

FTA support is a SWIFTAlliance Gateway (SAG) component that transfers files to or from a special directory used exclusively for FileAct file transfers (the FileAct directory).

The Message Bulking Facility for SWIFTNet FIN feature (MBF) provides an alternative communication path for FIN messages, based on the collection messages in files, instead of transferring each message separately.

This approach

  • Helps avoid expensive costs for single FIN messages; bulks of low-value payments are exchanged between a financial institution and its correspondents using the significantly cheaper SWIFTNet FileAct capability.
  • Allows for messages to be sent and received as transparently as possible. The application is not aware of the intervening message bulking or whether a single message has been sent or received via the standard FIN or the FileAct service of SWIFTNet.
  • Offers an alternative service to the standard FIN service. Bilateral agreements between the communicating parties (financial institutes) to exchange FIN messages through files, instead of the standard SWIFTNet FIN service, are required.

The basic configuration and administration/operating requirements are:

  • The use of bulked messages (for correspondent, message type, originating business unit) and the criteria when to actually send such bulked messages (such as reaching a maximum size or a maximum number of messages, or at and after specified times) can be configured.
  • MBF consists of a sending and receiving component. The components work together seamlessly, but it is possible to set up heterogeneous systems in which one side of the communication is implemented with MBF and the other side without. This requires the RJE file format be used on the correspondent site without MBF.

Financial Message Transfer

The current WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks method for sending FIN messages between LTs requires sending the messages via the SIPN, even for in-house messages. SWIFT imposes a fee for each message sent. The Financial Message Transfer (FMT) feature allows a shortcut. FMT allows applications to send FIN messages between any two LTs belonging to the same WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks instance, regardless of whether the LTs are configured for the same organizational unit (OU) or for two different OUs.

FMT simulates the SWIFTNet FIN protocol when processing these messages to keep your applications unchanged. It allows:

  • ISN ACK generation
  • Conversion of ISN (Input Sequence Number) to OSN (Output Sequence Number) and delivery of the latter one
  • Generation of MT011, if requested
  • Generation of TNG (Training) trailer, if requested

WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks clients already using a shortcut for in-house FIN messages can benefit by replacing it with FMT. Because FMT employs many of the same WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks functions as are used to process FIN messages sent via the SIPN (for example, auditing and message warehousing), using FMT in place of a third-party or custom application for in-house FIN messages reduces overall system complexity and simplifies maintenance.

Enhanced functions in V2.1

  • Message Authentication enables smooth migration: Defined by the LT, SLS session administration and message authentication including bilateral key handling can now be processed and administered within IBM MERVA ESA or within a single instance of WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks. The local authentication function (without MERVA) requires the Bridge for SWIFTNet feature.
  • Enhanced InterAct services supporting store-and-forward: InterAct Client service receives business messages from a business application, places each one in the payload of an InterAct message, and sends that message via InterAct SnF. The InterAct server service receives SnF messages, extracts the business messages from their payloads, and passes each business message to the appropriate server application.

The InterAct service provides additional abstraction when creating SWIFTNet InterAct business applications. It hides the complexity of the InterAct headers and protocol from the application and provides an easy interface with a minimum set of request parameters. All details can be configured within WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks configuration parameters, which the application refers to by a single logical name.

  • Exception queues: To simplify error processing, WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks now lets you specify the name of a queue to which the message is routed, if it is flagged as an error. For example, when WebSphere Business Integration for Financial Networks detects an authentication problem, it passes the message to the configured exception queue.

The exception queues function is available in the Support for SWIFTNet FIN and Support for SWIFTNet FMT features

  • Additional fields in the Message Warehouse: The tables of the Message Warehouse now contain additional columns to store data contained in the payloads of FIN messages; for example, timestamp, authentication status, and originating application for the message.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for your specific implementation of the given program must be obtained from a conversion table associated with the program. You must obtain a proof of entitlement (POE) for the appropriate number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements of a given program cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor (commonly called a "CPU" or "core") is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and/or logic unit. With multi-core technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processors require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To determine the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the processor value unit conversion table on the Passport Advantage Web site

With full capacity licensing, a proof of entitlement (POE) must be acquired for the appropriate number of value units based on all activated processors on the server available to the Program or a component of the Program.

Server

A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user and/or client devices over a network. A proof of entitlement (POE) must be obtained for each server on which the program or a component of the Program is run or for each server managed by the program. Where 'blade' technology is employed, each 'blade' is considered a separate server.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
