IBM Rational offers enterprise design and construction support for COBOL: IBM Rational COBOL Generation Extension for zSeries and IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for zSeries
IBM United States Software Announcement 206-109May 9, 2006

|
| At a glance |
IBM Rational broadens the applicability of its design and construction tools to include millions of
business-oriented procedural developers who build applications for zSeries a traditional IBM
market segment. Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) COBOL Gen provides the continued ability to
reap the benefits of the highly scalable and available zSeries platform by allowing developers, who
are accustomed to procedural programming languages, to quickly write full-function applications.
These applications exploit the power of Java and COBOL without having to focus on the underlying
Java and COBOL technology, infrastructure, or platform plumbing.

| Overview |
IBM Rational® COBOL Generation Extension for zSeries® is an optional extension (plug-in) to IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere® and IBM Rational Software Architect. These solutions allow Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) developers to generate COBOL, instead of Java, as their run-time artifact of choice. IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for zSeries is the run-time environment that supports applications created with EGL in conjunction with the IBM Rational COBOL Generation Extension for zSeries. These products broaden EGL's appeal to the millions of business-oriented procedural developers who build applications for zSeries a traditional IBM market segment. IBM Rational EGL COBOL Gen continues to reap the benefits of the highly scalable, 24x7 availability of the zSeries platform by allowing procedural business developers to quickly write full-function applications. This is achieved while focusing on the business aspect and logic and not the underlying technology, infrastructure, or platform plumbing.
IBM customers have heavy investments in zSeries solutions that run their core business. In many cases, employees with language skills in these established platforms are retiring and college-hires don't know the languages. With EGL, IBM has the unique ability to support these customers by enabling them to enhance and maintain their business applications without growing COBOL skills. It allows continued utilization of the zSeries platform with solutions that run in a native platform language like COBOL. However, it also allows these IT shops to standardize on a modern, highly productive, yet still familiar, programming language like EGL.

| Description |
IBM Rational Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) is a modern programming language that allows business-oriented developers to apply a procedural style of programming while exploiting the power of underlying object-oriented technology.
With a broad range of visual development and easy-to-learn (and use) testing and deployment tools, IBM Rational EGL is a perfect fit for software developers who are new to Java, but have procedural programming skills and valuable business domain expertise.
EGL empowers this broader class of developers with several key values:
- Provides the ability to build Java/J2EE-based applications without a deep knowledge of the underlying technology
- Delivers applications based on industry standards, which interoperate with existing systems
- Develops service-oriented applications without extensive knowledge of SOA
- Reduces training costs while leveraging existing business developer skill sets
- Achieves the highest level of productivity, leveraging the latest platforms
- Reduces application errors through automation
- Automates deployment to all IBM platforms
EGL provides the following benefits:
- Leverage existing skills Ability to leverage your business-oriented developer's wealth of business domain expertise for Java/J2EE development, which up until now, has not reached its full potential due to legacy environments
- Application flexibility First-class support for Web Services and SOA, J2EE Web applications, character-based and text-based "green-screen" applications, and batch/reporting applications
- Data source independence Access a broad range of data sources including SQL DBMS via open database connectivity/JDBCTM technology, message queuing data (MQSeries®), sequential and VSAM files, and hierarchical data structures (IMS/DLI)
- Governance control Code Generation enforcement of standards and best practices for the most appropriate targeted run-time platform, either Java or COBOL
-
Platform neutrality Cross-platform application deployment/implementation, including IBM
zSeries and iSeries
- Fully integrated with IBM Rational Software Development Platform
