Companies must manage various dimensions of product information, including item, location, organization, and trading partner data, and all the linkages among those, including prices and trade terms. With WebSphere Product Center, you can manage item, location, and trading partner information with numerous classification, merchandising, geographic, and operational hierarchies.
WebSphere Product Center's rich data model supports these functions:
- Manage items and various relationships among items (packaging, substitution, cross-sell, up-sell, bundles, or prepacks)
- Manage locations, location hierarchies, and various attributes related to locations
- Deliver superior category hierarchy support
-
Support specific attributes and attribute values
- Category
- Location
- Trading partner
- Relationship
-
Organizational modeling with role- and attribute-level security
administration
Product information is often owned and modified by users from multiple departments within a company. With WebSphere Product Center, companies can segment various attributes of product data as per business responsibility (such as logistics, finance, pricing, marketing, and supplier) and control user actions (view-only, edit, approve) based on their roles.
Pricing analysts can enter and update pricing, while marketing users can work on product description, features, and benefits. Each user sees the relevant product information based on his or her role for the most secure and productive user interface. Organization modeling and security for WebSphere Product Center includes the following functions:
- Access control groups and selections for segment data as per business responsibility through access control groups and selections
- Granular security for permitted user actions by user role
- Attributes for groups (attribute collections) by functional areas
- Access for users to attribute groups based on functional ownership
- Attribute views and tabs for the most intuitive and productive user interface by role
-
Extensive business process support
WebSphere Product Center is designed for supporting and enhancing business processes for product information management in an enterprise. Product information in effective pricing dates can be entered at one or more higher levels in the hierarchy, such as at corporate, region, country, or market level, and inherited at lower levels with an option to override if needed. Companies can manage product information in multiple languages, with robust support for managing the translation process with third-party translation agencies.
WebSphere Product Center powers business processes for an enterprise with the following functions:
- Reduces redundant data entry through inheritance
- Manages data in multiple languages with localized attribute names and values
- Delivers superior attribute-level workflow
- Enables collaboration area for internal and external collaboration
-

Java API
In WebSphere Product Center V5.3, a Java API is included to accelerate integration with other applications in the enterprise. This standard Java API exposes commonly-used business objects and supports query functions, thus allowing external parties to search for products or entities maintained within WebSphere Product Center.
Enhanced support for Location-specific data
V5.3 offers support for thousands of separate locations and their associated product information. This function is critical for companies that maintain product information specific to a location such a pricing, terms and conditions, promotions, and so on.
Enhanced control over workflow security
V5.3 enhances workflow capabilities with more granular security controls. New attribute-level security allows a workflow administrator to control which attributes workflow participants can view and/or edit, as well as which attributes are required for a given participant, using user control groups. This version also allows workflow participants to save items in a "draft" state so that they can create/update a subset of item attributes and save to the item (in draft state) even if some required attributes are blank. These features significantly increase the usability of the workflow tool and the productivity of workflow participants.
Performance and benchmarking
The improved performance of WebSphere Product Center V5.3 is demonstrated in benchmarking tests published with this release. The results for typical implementation scenarios include:
- Integration with WebSphere Portal
- Integration with WebSphere Commerce
- Integration through Java API
- Item-location processing
Improved search capabilities
V5.3 includes enhanced search capabilities over prior releases. Searches for both item and location-specific information are now supported. Searches are also simplified with support for SQL-like declarative language.
Data serialization
This release includes performance enhancements through more efficient data storage and retrieval "serialization and deserialization."
Web services security
With V5.3 Web services security has been enhanced. Now when calls are made from WebSphere Product Center to an existing Web service, user authentication is executed before the Web service can be accessed.

Processor
A processor (commonly called a "core") is a functional unit in a computer that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic unit. In full capacity, a proof of entitlement (PoE) must be acquired for all activated (available for use) processors that are on the machine where the program or a component of the program is run.
- IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
- Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. With multicore technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dualcore chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.
- When a server is shipped with six processors, but two of them are "inactive," four processors are active.
Processor with single staging
A Processor with single staging (single staging) entitles you to run the program in one production environment and one staging environment. A PoE must be acquired for all activated (available for use) processors that are in the production and staging environments. The single staging processor may only be used for no-production activities such as development, testing, performance tuning, fault diagnosis, benchmarking, problem solving and QA activities. This includes all forms of test and development activities related to "system" and "unit" testing.
Important: The processor with single staging must be ordered in quantities of two. That is, you must order a minimum of two processors with single staging, one for the production environment and one for the staging environment. For example, if you require four production processors and four staging processors, you must purchase eight processors with single staging so four cover the production environment and four cover the staging environment.
Processor with dual staging
A Processor with dual staging (dual staging) entitles you to run the program in one production environment and two staging environments. A PoE must be acquired for all activated (available for use) processors that are in the production and staging environments. The processors with dual staging may only be used for nonproduction activities such as development, testing, performance tuning, fault diagnosis, benchmarking, problem solving and QA activities. This includes all forms of test and development activities related to "system" and "unit" testing.
Important: The processor with dual staging must be ordered in quantities of three. That is, a client must order a minimum of three processors with dual staging, one for the production environment and two for the staging environment. For example, if you require four production processors and eight staging processors they must purchase twelve processors with dual staging so four cover the production environment and eight cover the staging environment.
Concurrent user
A concurrent user is one and only one individual within or outside your enterprise. The number of PoEs required is for the highest number of users simultaneously accessing the program or any program components either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.
Limited use concurrent user
A limited use concurrent user is one and only one individual within or outside your enterprise. The number of PoEs required is for the highest number of users simultaneously accessing the program or any program components either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user. A limited use concurrent user is restricted from conducting administrative activities in the program. Following are functions that a limited use concurrent user may not perform:
-
Add a new user, delete an existing user, or modify role for an existing user
-
Add, delete, or modify an organization
-
Add, delete, or modify a workflow (workflow modifications include changing user/role for a step,
adding a new step, removing an existing step, changing attributes worked on in a given step)
-
Add a new role, delete an existing role, or modify privileges for a role. Role privileges include
ability to access collaboration areas, permission to view and modify items, category hierarchies.
Refer to WebSphere Product Center user guide for a comprehensive list of role privileges.
-
Add or delete a catalog
-
Add a new specification (spec) for attributes of any WebSphere Product Center data model, also
modify an existing specification to add, delete or modify an attribute for the data model
- Add new views or modify existing views for a catalogue, also add new tabs or modify existing tabs (including adding or removing attribute groups) for a view.
Full-capacity processor
In full capacity charging, PoEs must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.
- If there are program components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the program-unique terms of the license information.
Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
- In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.
Concurrent user:
A concurrent user also known as a floating user (user) is one individual, machine, program, or device within or outside of your enterprise.
A PoE is required for the highest number of users simultaneously accessing the program or any program component either directly or indirectly through any means on behalf of the user. An example of "indirect" access would be through a multiplexing program, device, or application server.
A user can establish one or more connections and count as a single user.

| IBM Electronic Services |
IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent.
IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM.
Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
