Overview

WebSphere® Portlet Factory is a comprehensive portlet development environment that automates the process of creating service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based portlets. WebSphere Portlet Factory's ease of use and advanced development features allow developers to deliver adaptive, robust portlets in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost compared to other methods of portlet development.

With WebSphere Portlet Factory, developers can quickly and easily leverage their company's core assets, using automation to assemble them into custom, high-value portlets. These portlets are dynamic, robust Java™ 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications, based on an SOA.

In addition, portlets created with WebSphere Portlet Factory can automatically present themselves as stand-alone Web applications, Web services, or native WebSphere and JSR-168 portlets, without requiring any coding or duplicating assets. Business users can also then modify these portlets in real time to meet changing business requirements without having to go back to IT.

By eliminating the need to code all of these implementations and their variations, WebSphere Portlet Factory simplifies the development, deployment and change management process. This helps companies save time and money, and freeing developers to focus on more important, strategic work.

Description

Portal software delivers enormous value to IT organizations, enabling them to create powerful Web applications that give users centralized access to applications and personalized information. With portals, companies can reap benefits such as simplified infrastructure, faster development, and enhanced employee productivity.

The key, however, to deriving the most business value from a portal deployment is to create custom views or portlets that aggregate data, content, and processes from existing applications. Typically, companies will need to customize the creation of the majority of these portlets. That way they can incorporate their unique businesses data, processes, presentation requirements, and organizational structures.

WebSphere Portlet Factory is a dedicated portlet development environment for rapidly creating, customizing, deploying, and maintaining portlets that leverage existing enterprise applications, databases, and other IT assets. WebSphere Portlet Factory's ease of use and advanced development features dramatically streamline the entire portlet development process. This lets developers deliver adaptive, robust portlets in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost it requires today.

With WebSphere Portlet Factory, developers rapidly build portlets by defining a sequence of highly adaptive, reusable software components called "Builders." Builders then dynamically generate the application code, including Java Server Pages (JSPs), Java classes, and XML documents, as well as all of the low-level artifacts that make up the portlet application. In this way, developers can capture and automate the process of building dynamic portlets instead of explicitly coding each portlet. In addition, developers can quickly and easily create multiple, highly customized portlets from one code base, without requiring additional code changes or redeployment.

WebSphere Portlet Factory is also natively integrated with IBM WebSphere Portal providing support for key APIs, such as request, response, and session. In addition, WebSphere Portlet Factory supports the following features:

  • People awareness — Seamlessly integrate collaboration into the company's portal, enabling users to send instant messages and e-mail simply by clicking on a person's name
  • Credential vault —- Easily leverage the WebSphere Portal credential vault or LTPA tokens to provide single sign-on capabilities
  • Click-to-action — Create a richly integrated portal experience by enabling portlets to interact and share relevant information, even if they are accessing data from disparate databases and systems
  • Automated deployments — Automatically deploy and redeploy portlet war files to WebSphere Portal — without having to touch ant scripts or xml deployment descriptors
  • WebSphere Portal groups — Easily deploy portlets that adapt depending on the user's portal group
  • WebSphere Portal modes — Automatically generate fully functioning user interfaces for each of the portlet modes, including view, edit, and configure
  • Process choreographer — Create portlets that integrate business processes defined in Business Process Execution Language

Additional benefits of WebSphere Portlet Factory include:

  • Accelerate portal development — Increase developer productivity up to 12 times, dramatically reducing development costs
  • Extend portlet creation to a broader development community — Enable developers of all skill sets to build multi-page, complex portlets without coding
  • Leverage existing enterprise applications and IT assets — Quickly create composite, high-value, portlets that leverage existing investment in legacy applications (SAP solutions, PeopleSoft systems, Siebel systems, IBM Lotus® Domino®) and databases
  • Create new portlets on demand — Generate multiple, customized portlets for various users or application contexts — without changing underlying code
  • Empower business users to create, customize, and manage portlets — Remove IT bottleneck and reduce time to market by empowering business user configuration
  • Automate frequently occurring development tasks — Capture commonly-used design patterns and company-specific business processes as reusable components for all developers, enforcing application architecture and development best practices
  • Easily comply to open standards — Quickly build JSR-168-compliant portlets without needing to know the specifics of this underlying standard

Charge metrics definitions

Processor

In Full Capacity charging, proof of entitlements (PoEs) must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.

  1. If there are program components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the program-unique Terms of the License Information.
  2. IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  3. Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dualcore chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  4. In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
  5. Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does NOT affect the count of physical processors.
  6. Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

Authorized user

An authorized user (user) is one and only one individual, machine, program or device with a specific identity (ID) within or outside Your enterprise.

A PoE is evidence of your authorization to use a program and is required for each user accessing the program or any component, application, feature, function and/or capability thereof, either directly or indirectly, through any means on behalf of the user in any manner.

The program may be installed on one or more computers, and accessed by multiple users provided that a user authorization has been obtained for each individual user.

  1. Users have unique specific identity and IDs cannot be shared.
  2. An ID may establish one or more connections and count as a single user.
  3. An ID may only be reassigned for the long-term replacement of personnel, machine, program, or device.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM.

Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
