| Overview |
Information security is one of the top concerns for both business leaders and those responsible for IT.
Ensuring that information moving around the enterprise retains its integrity and is protected from unauthorized access is an ongoing challenge and responsibility for all organizations.
WebSphere® MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS® V6.0 is designed to help address these challenges when moving information around the enterprise between virtually every type of commercial IT system.
WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS provides a flavor of WebSphere MQ with increased support for security. It adds end-to-end, application-level data protection, and enterprise-wide remote management of security policies. You can quickly deploy these advanced features to secure many of your current production environments without changing your existing WebSphere MQ applications.
Advanced security services are essential for high-value message transactions where you need:
- Integrity and confidentiality of data while resident on a queue
- Individual message encapsulation and auditability
- Tracking of message origination to a specific application on a system instead of a channel
- Security for only a subset of the message traffic on a single channel
These advanced security services are compatible with:
- WebSphere Message Broker
- WebSphere Event Broker
WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS is offered under a monthly license charge (MLC)
license model just as WebSphere MQ for z/OS is today.

| Description |
WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS V6.0 delivers a special edition of WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0 with increased security features.
In addition to providing the reliable messaging services of WebSphere MQ, WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS also offers a multiplatform security management solution that provides data protection for WebSphere MQ-based applications, without the need to modify or even recompile them.
This enhanced data protection acts at the application layer, above the link or channel level, so that the integrity and confidentiality of messages can be preserved and demonstrated not just while messages are in transit between systems, but also while they are under the control of WebSphere MQ (that is, while residing in a message queue). This is critical when using WebSphere MQ to process personally identifiable information or other types of sensitive data, such as high-value transactions. WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS can help clients as part of their regulatory compliance efforts to meet their security goals and obligations.
With WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS, you gain the flexibility to add application-level data protection and remote security policy administration to the broad set of security services previously available in WebSphere MQ. The application-level data protection services in WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS add another dimension to the link-level data protection services available in WebSphere MQ. For example, application-level data protection captures message data and secures it before the message is placed onto a queue.
For even greater flexibility, messages can be individually digitally signed or signed and encrypted based on the policy you set. If you want, you can define your security policy so that only a subset of the messages passing over a single channel is secured. Further, when using the application-level data protection, each message is signed with a unique private key associated with the sending application. Message origination can be traced to the originating application instead of only to the originating channel. Individual messages are encrypted under unique keys, helping to remove the threat of compromising the encryption key through repetitive use.
WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS can save you development expense and time. It can remove the need to reengineer and modify your applications to secure message data from within each application. Reengineering existing production applications is a very expensive process, the costs of which only begin with the application recoding expenses.
Licensing cryptography routines, training your staff, designing and implementing a real-time key exchange process, and budgeting for your ongoing maintenance cost of custom security code make this approach to solving your security problems impractical. With WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS, you may see an immediate return on investment upon deploying it.
For processing sensitive data like financial transactions, Human Resources records, medical records, or any other type of personally identifiable information (PII), application-level data protection yields a true end-to-end security model.
WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS also enables remote administration of security policies on queue managers and on individual queues. These include:
- Put and get access control permissions, including time of day and day of week restriction.
- Data protection options (none, integrity, and privacy).
- Audit options that allow generation of a specific security audit record for each open, put, get, and close operation showing the security policy in place and whether it was successfully enforced. This can be critical in demonstrating compliance with legislation like the United States Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) or similar mandates in other countries.
Remote administration is performed via a Web-based utility with an easy-to-use GUI for setting, viewing, and updating security policies. A delegation capability allows IT organizations to maintain control over the enterprise security infrastructure for WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS and still grant a specific department or line-of-business the ability to manage its subset of resources. Administration can also be done via scripting using a command line interface.
An enterprise-wide view of these security policies, with the ability for authorized administrators to remotely update them, can greatly improve efficiencies and reduce administrative costs.
The extended security services offered in this release of WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS require the installation of:
- z/OS V1.4
- IBM RACF, or equivalent security subsystem that supports SAF V3, or later
- SSL
Refer to Software Announcement 203-098 , dated April 8, 2003, for additional details on Tivoli Access Manager for Business Integration Host Edition, which provides the advanced security services in WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition for z/OS.

Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products
Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products are based on product LPAR utilization capacity. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a VWLC product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which a VWLC product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period. For additional details on IBM Workload License Charges, refer to:

Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions
zSeries software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible VWLC products apply when z/OS is running in z/Architecture (64 bit) mode on an IBM zSeries 900, no other MVS-based operating system is licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms.
Sub-capacity charges for a VWLC product are based on the utilization of the LPARs where and when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for VWLC products the customer is required to:
-
Sign and abide by the terms of the Attachment for zSeries Workload License Charges (Z125-6516).
-
Obtain the latest version of the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool.
-
Install any VWLC product and IBM zSeries 900 Licensed Internal Code (LIC) service required for
sub-capacity charging. Required service will be listed on the WLC Web site
-
Collect SMF data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain
the collected SMF data for a period of not less than six months.
-
Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected
SMF data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to
determine required license capacity for the VWLC products. Required
license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a VWLC
product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period.
IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these
product defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after
the data was collected.
-
Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits
of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will
follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive
application of sub-capacity charges.
-
Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly.
-
Submit Sub-Capacity Reports for all VWLC products with complete data for
the entire reporting period to the e-mail address and by the date,
specified on the zSeries Software Pricing Web site
and in the current Workload License Charge Exhibit (Z125-6324). Sub-Capacity Reports that reflect a changed product defined capacity will be considered to be orders placed by the customer without further action on the customer's part and IBM is authorized to make any resulting billing increase or decrease. To place an order for a new license or to discontinue licenses, move licenses between machines, report a hardware model upgrade, or enable or disable product features, the customer must contact IBM or their IBM Business Partner.
-
Configure machine to send weekly Transmit System Availability Data (TSAD)
to IBM via the IBM zSeries 900 Remote Support Facility (RSF). If the
machine cannot connect via the RSF, provide this TSAD via an alternate
means documented in the z/OS publication
