Overview

Workplace Dashboard Framework delivers reusable service-oriented components, robust administration tools, and dashboard-specific features that help speed the creation of standards-based, active dashboards. This offering, which augments the capabilities of IBM WebSphere® Portlet Factory, can help dramatically reduce the development costs and speed the time-to-value for a company's dashboard initiatives.

Dashboards built with Workplace Dashboard Framework provide a level of adaptability not found in many other dashboard solutions. They automatically adapt to the needs and roles of each user, presenting only the appropriate and desired Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), processes, alerts, and competitive information. This helps ensure that users are not overwhelmed with irrelevant data and that the metrics are properly aligned with each user's individual performance goals.

In addition, unlike some other dashboard solutions, Workplace dashboards such as Workplace Dashboard for Sales and Workplace Dashboard for Executives come with built-in, browser-based configuration wizards that enable business users to dynamically tailor their own dashboards — without involving IT. Through these easy-to-use wizards, business professionals can change the display of fields, data sorting, data filters, chart colors or types, alerts, and performance thresholds, ultimately creating "personalized" dashboards.

Because Workplace dashboards are built on top of WebSphere Portal, Workplace Collaboration Services and Workplace Services Express, they offer a level of functionality and extensibility that is not available in stand-alone dashboard applications.

Application integration extensions leverage the portal framework to deliver a common infrastructure that supports the real-time integration of multiple, disparate data sources. As a result, dashboards built with Workplace Dashboard Framework help users to monitor and interact with the operational data and processes from all the applications that are running the business.

The portal infrastructure supports real-time collaboration. As such, Workplace dashboards let decision makers take immediate action via integrated collaboration features, including instant messaging, e-mail, and e-conferencing.

Description

In today's competitive landscape, smart companies are deploying role-driven dashboards in order to improve decision making and speed the response to business events. Unfortunately, deploying custom dashboards can be a challenge. Companies often struggle trying to access the data needed to drive the dashboards, because it usually resides in multiple, disparate systems, including spreadsheets, data warehouses, and operational systems.

If companies can overcome their data issues, they often end up creating dashboards that display relatively static, read-only data. As a result, business users might be able to identify problems, but they can not take action to resolve these problems from within the dashboard. And, finally, many dashboard vendors only offer their products on top of proprietary infrastructures. This can significantly increase a company's cost of building and maintaining dashboard solutions.

Workplace Dashboard Framework addresses these challenges by providing reusable components, robust administration tools, and dashboard-specific features that help speed the creation of standards-based, active dashboards. This offering, which augments the capabilities of WebSphere Portlet Factory, can help dramatically reduce the development costs and speeds the time-to-value for a company's dashboard initiatives.

In addition to Workplace Dashboard Framework, IBM offers Workplace dashboards that accelerate your dashboard deployments with prebuilt portlets that display best practice KPIs. These Workplace dashboards are ideally suited for companies that are interested in an out-of-the-box dashboard solution tailored to a specific function and industry.

In addition to including best-practice portlets, each Workplace dashboard comes with built-in filtering capabilities, browser-based configuration wizards, collaboration, and alerting. The packs are also all fully localized and include sample users and roles. And, finally, the dashboards within these packs are built on a clean service oriented architecture, which allows a clear separation between the presentation layer and the data integration layer. As such, the back-end of the dashboards is pluggable to fit into your environment.

IBM currently offers the following Workplace dashboards:

Workplace Dashboard for Executives. Workplace Dashboard for Executives provides key executives with insight into the metrics and KPIs so they can align their roles and responsibilities. This dashboard includes portlets that represent best practice KPIs, such as EBITDA, Top Opportunities, Headcount, Internal Hires, Time to Fill Positions, and Employee Turnover.

Workplace Dashboard for Sales. Workplace Dashboard for Sales arms sales executives with the information and insight they need to effectively manage their sales teams and close deals. This adaptive dashboard displays the appropriate information according to the roles of the user. Out-of-the-box roles include Sales VP, Sales Manager, and Sales Representative. Best practice KPIs include top opportunities, rep performance, opportunities by stage, and customer satisfaction.

Key features

  • Repository of reusable design components — Captures specific dashboard design patterns, such as chart-to-table drill-down, gauge charts, summary rows, and hierarchical drill-downs, making it extremely fast and easy for companies to create custom dashboard portlets for their specific KPIs.
  • Business user configuration — Enables developers to easily extend the configuration of portlets to business users, including the portlet's look and feel, data, thresholds, process flow, and chart types. With this capability, companies can increase the flexibility of their dashboards and help reduce IT maintenance costs.
  • Hi-fidelity charting — Enables the creation of configurable charts that dynamically adapt based upon users' actions, including drilling down into related portlets. Includes support for a wide range of chart types (pie, dial/gauge, bar, and line), file formats (Flash, PNG, JPG, and BMP), and back end-data sources (SAP solutions, Siebel systems, Lotus® Domino®, PeopleSoft systems, databases, Web services, and spreadsheets).
  • Robust alerting module — Proactively alerts users, in real time, to important issues and events that affect their business. Provides support for a number of different types of alerts, including event-based, asynchronous, and basic threshold alerts. Also supports alert escalations and business user creation of alerts.
  • Intuitive, browser-based administration console — Enables global changes to all portlets within the dashboard, making the dashboards easier to configure and maintain. Includes a set of administration portlets for making all-encompassing changes to various capabilities in dashboard portlets, such as logging, people awareness, and the page templates that drive the portlets' look and feel.
  • Flexible filtering capabilities — Dynamically filter dashboards based upon your company's criteria, which can include product family, time frame, and market sector. Adaptive filtering technology displays only the filters appropriate to the user's characteristics and role.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor

In Full Capacity charging, Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) must be acquired for all activated processors (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.

  • If there are program components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the program-unique terms of the License Information.
  • IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  • Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called cores) to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each core to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  • In the zSeries Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single physical processor.
  • Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

Warranty: This program includes a warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. For one year from acquisition of the program, this warranty provides the customer with access to databases containing program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which you can download or otherwise obtain and install.

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM.

Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
