Overview

IBM DB2® Data Warehouse Edition (DWE) V9.1, the first fully integrated data warehousing platform from IBM, provides deeper integration of metadata and runtime infrastructure. DWE helps you achieve information on demand by integrating core components for warehouse administration, data mining, Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), and inline analytics/reporting along with the improved performance and usability of business intelligence (BI) features for real-time insight and decision making.

Key to this new release is an integrated Design Studio. The Eclipse-based application opens up interoperability with IBM's Rational® development tools as well as allowing for custom plug-ins. Tasks that were previously managed in a diverse way are now pulled together into a single, Eclipse-based console that permits the architecture, design, coding, and testing of all aspects of your data warehouse from a single interface. This increases DBA productivity while opening the data mining and OLAP areas to intuitive control.

DWE is based on the technology of SQL Warehousing Tool, Intelligent Miner™, Cube Views®, and Alphablox. The Eclipse-based Design Studio integrates Rational Data Architect plug-ins for physical data modeling, together with other DWE components for modeling of warehouse-based analytic structures.

DWE contains a full, unrestricted copy of DB2 Enterprise Server Edition database, delivering to users a relational database system with the ability to handle the most demanding OLTP work loads. Featured is a loosely coupled, shared-nothing architecture that permits linear scaling, lack of performance bottlenecks, and the most feature-rich and fully integrated capabilities IBM has ever offered for enterprise data warehouses.

Description

The new version of DB2 DWE is an integrated platform for developing warehouse-based analytics, including Web-based applications with embedded data mining and multidimensional OLAP. The new version of DWE integrates core components for warehouse administration, data mining, OLAP and inline analytics/reporting. These platform pillars are based on the technology of Rational Data Architect together with the SQL Warehousing Tool, Intelligent Miner, Cube Views, and Alphablox.

In DWE Design Studio, physical data modeling, cube modeling, data mining modeling, and SQL data flow/control flow modeling are unified in one common design environment. The Eclipse-based DWE Design Studio integrates all of these tools within a common framework and user interface (except for Alphablox, which continues at this point with its own native interface). The Web-based DWE Administration Console provides a single point-of-control for runtime administration of these same technologies.

DWE is a component-based architecture with client and server pieces, both leveraging emerging IBM Software Group frameworks and shared subcomponents. DWE begins with DB2 (including the Database Partitioning Feature and Query Patroller options) as the foundation for a scalable enterprise warehousing platform, then extends the DB2 warehouse with additional analytic tooling (design-side) and infrastructure (runtime), including WebSphere® Application Server and Rational Data Architect. DWE also includes DB2 Alphablox, a tool for developing custom applications with embedded analytics based on the warehouse. DWE may provide faster time-to-value for enterprise analytics, based on fewer vendors, tools, skill sets, and licenses.

Cube Views works together with Alphablox, or with partner BI tools, to accelerate OLAP queries in DB2. Cube Views uses multidimensional models to design runtime DB2 objects containing critical dimensions and levels — or slices — of the cube. These prejoined and preaggregated Materialized Query Tables (MQT) are exploited by the DB2 optimizer, which rewrites incoming queries, transparently routing eligible queries to the appropriate MQT for significantly faster query performance ("speed-of-thought" response time is one of the key elements of OLAP). The Cube Views-designed MQTs can accelerate all queries in the warehouse, not just those using a particular tool or interface.

Besides performance benefits, Cube Views metadata and tooling allow cube models to be defined once in DB2 and used by Alphablox along with many partner BI tools, or alternatively, imported into DB2 from the partner tool. Either way, productivity of OLAP administrators and developers is improved. Because the shared common metadata includes aggregation formulas and calculations, users may benefit from greater consistency of analytical results across the enterprise.

Embedded data mining in DWE uses Intelligent Miner algorithms to analyze warehouse data "where it lays" and provide insights into customer or business behaviors that are otherwise unknown, invisible, and impossible to discover. Mining in the warehouse provides for higher accuracy and timeliness, but in the past required that the data mining be invoked by a SQL programming interface. In DWE Design Studio, a new data discovery function allows you to profile your data, sample and view table contents, and visualize correlated statistics to understand what parts of the warehouse hold the best potential for mining. Next, the Eclipse data flow editor is used to visually design data mining flows with modeling, scoring, and visualization operators. Then SQL can be generated and pasted into an Alphablox page, a third-party tool, or any customer application to invoke the mining flow for embedded analytics.

Alphablox lets you quickly and easily build custom Web-based OLAP-style reporting, either as standalone applications or embedded in Web portals, dashboards, and other existing applications. Time-to-value comes from leveraging prebuilt libraries of J2EE components — the building "blox" of this architecture. Because of the focus on customization and embedability, Alphablox enables applications with embedded analytics to invoke the warehouse-based analytic structures (mining and OLAP) modeled and maintained in DWE.

The new SQL Warehousing Tool automatically generates DB2-optimized SQL based on a visual data flow modeled in the Design Studio canvas, drawing from a palette of predefined operators. The library of SQL operators covers the kinds of transformations typically needed to populate analytic structures involved in data mining and OLAP, or for any in-database data flows. Data flows can be combined in sequences as control flows, which are then scheduled for execution. Because the data flows are SQL-based, DB2 itself acts as the runtime engine, with WebSphere Application Server providing control and scheduling. In summary, the new Design Studio in DWE V9.1 provides an integrated platform for modeling, designing, and maintaining warehouse-based analytic structures, which can be invoked by Alphablox, partner, or customer applications for true embedded enterprise analytics.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor

In full capacity charging, PoEs must be acquired for all activated processors (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.

  • If program components are included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the program-unique terms of the License Information.
  • IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  • Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called cores) to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each core to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  • In the zSeries Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single physical processor.
  • Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

Sub-capacity processor

The required authorized use level for eligible programs is based upon the highest utilization of the partitions where the program or a component of the program, executes. Customer agrees to periodically report program use to IBM using an IBM license management tool.

  • The number of authorizations you must acquire is the smaller value of either of the following methods:
    • The total number of activated (available for use) processors in the machine
    • The sum of the following items (any remaining fraction of a processor must be rounded up to a full processor in the final aggregation)
      • When the program is run in partitions with dedicated processors, the sum of the processing units of those partitions
      • When the program is run in partitions that are members of a shared processing pool, the smaller of the number of processors assigned to the pool, or the sum of the virtual processors of each uncapped partition plus the processing units in each capped partition running a program
  • z/VM® guest charging
    • The total number of activated (available for use) processors in the machine
    • The sum of the following items (any remaining fraction of a processor must be rounded up to a full processor in the final aggregation)
      • When the program is run in VM guests with dedicated processors, the sum of the IFL engines of those VM guests
      • When the program is run in VM guests that are members of a shared processing pool (z/VM), the smaller of the number of processors assigned to the z/VM pool, or the sum of the IFL engines in each z/VM pool running a program

Authorized user: An authorized user is one and only one individual, machine, program, or device with a specific ID within or outside your enterprise.

A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) is evidence of your authorization to use a program and is required for each user accessing the program or any component, application, feature, function, or capability thereof, either directly or indirectly, through any means on behalf of the user in any manner.

The program may be installed on one or more computers, and accessed by multiple users provided that a user authorization has been obtained for each individual user.

  • Users have unique specific identity and IDs cannot be shared.
  • An ID may establish one or more connections and count as a single user.
  • An ID can only be reassigned for the long-term replacement of personnel, machine, program, or device.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per-processor basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Manager within their offerings so that customers can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on their use of the programs on a continuous basis.

More information can be found on the Passport Advantage Web site

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a Primary Business Contact is established for their contracts.

For more information on required and entitled license capacity, license requirements and reporting, refer to Software Announcement 205-093 , dated April 19, 2005.

If you order (this product) under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software is documented in the following customer publications, which are available from IBM Publications Center at

Usage restriction: Yes

The IBM DB2 Data Warehouse Edition V9.1 (DWE V9.1) program. consists of a number of packaged components and other IBM programs. The terms of this DWE V9.1 license supersede and replace any terms of those other IBM programs which may accompany them. These packaged components and other IBM programs can only be used with this program.

The reference to PoE in any of the program-unique terms refers to your entitlement to copies reasonably necessary to conduct your evaluation under this license, and this license serves as your PoE for these purposes.

The use-based charges described in this LI supersede any use-based charges that may appear in the licenses for each of these components. However, all other terms or restrictions described in the licenses for the above components continue to apply unless otherwise modified.

Usage restriction — Use as program bundle only

This program comprises various components and the components are licensed for use solely in combination with the packaged components. None of the included components may be used, transferred, sublicensed, or redistributed individually or in any combination of components other than as a complete package consisting of the program package as a whole, including, but not limited to, each and all of the components listed.

Use-based charges — Resources

Charges for this program are based on the processors that are attached or are available (locally or remotely) to the DB2 server or servers on which it is licensed. For the sake of clarity, all processors physically in a server or machine on which the program (or any of its components) is installed count as processors attached or available notwithstanding any partitioning, pinning, or logical separation of such processors from the program or its components. The total number of processors attached or available may not exceed the number authorized by the applicable PoEs or authorized by each product authorization acquired under Passport Advantage. If the total number exceeds the quantity in your PoEs or exceeds your product authorizations acquired under Passport Advantage, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

For the complete licensing terms, refer to the program-unique terms included in the package of your product.

Software maintenance applies: Yes

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each Program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your IS technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
