Overview

IBM WebSphere® Message Broker is a leading message broker in the integration market, offering in-flight routing, universal transformation, logging, and enrichment of messages.

IBM broadens its leadership with WebSphere Message Broker by extending the product's unique set of value-added features and functions with the release of WebSphere DataStage® TX Extender for Message Broker, an extension that enables advanced complex data transformation capabilities for virtually any data format, all within the Broker environment.

IBM WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker is an extension for WebSphere Message Broker that allows it to work with messages in virtually any format by using a map to perform the transformation in a code-free environment. This allows Message Broker to handle messages in formats which cannot be supported directly with the built-in message parsing capabilities of Message Broker. In addition to this main function, any resource adapter can be used inside the transformation map to extend the range and reach of Message Broker (for example, using FTP or SMTP protocols).

WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker:

  • Allows you to extend the range of message formats and protocols that Message Broker can handle
  • Allows you to handle very large messages or files in Message Broker
  • Offers support for industry standards, regulatory compliance, and connectivity requirements so you can solve critical business problems in real time

With this technology, you can accelerate implementation, reduce risks, increase operational efficiencies, and enhance return on investment (ROI).

WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker (the Extender) consists of two components: the plug-in parser and the plug-in node. The plug-in parser invokes a map to transform an incoming byte stream into an element tree, while the plug-in node transforms one element tree into another. The plug-in parser allows message formats which are to be handled by the DataStage TX engine to be accessed transparently from any node in a message flow. The plug-in node is explicitly wired into a flow to map from one format to another.

As an extension of IBM WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker V5 and IBM WebSphere Message Broker V6, WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker includes all the components necessary to build type trees and maps, as well as all the components necessary to execute these maps within a Message Broker flow.

WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker is a repackaged version of the DataStage TX V8 Development Kit and includes the following components:

  • Design Studio (Type Designer, DataBase Interface Designer, Type Tree Maker, Map Designer)
  • Transformation engine
  • Message Broker plug-in
  • Online Library

Description

WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker and WebSphere Message Broker are an ideal platform for business integration. They offer you the essential flexibility to start small and grow with your customer demands. Ease of implementation and ease of use in production ensures that time to value can be slashed and return on investment maximized. These integration offerings help you improve control of your business through greater use of business data, allowing rapid response to events as they occur, and enable timely delivery of business information that support key business decisions.

Companies are driven by information, and the need to create valuable and ready access to information is critical. The ability to deal with data in its native form, and to provide valuable enrichment of raw data is crucial to linking business systems and data stores with each other, and enabling a seamless flow between customers, operations, suppliers, and partners.

Today, modern enterprises often have complex challenges to integration, which require the ability to handle complex, semi-structured, interdependent and disparate data types. Even leveraging investments in enterprise application integration (EAI), companies far too often are left to manual or programmatic manipulation of complex data in order to prep it for integration use. Far too often, this results in high implementation and management costs, lost productivity, lack of data insight, and single-purpose integration stovepipes. The result is a costly infrastructure, with heavy demands on IT staff and inability to allow IT systems to provide the full functionality that is desired by the business users.

IBM WebSphere DataStage TX

WebSphere DataStage TX is a powerful tool for transforming different data representations. It is well suited to handling very large amounts of data or extremely complex data structures. In this respect, WebSphere DataStage TX complements the existing XSLT Transformation, ESQL/Java™ Compute and Map nodes that are built into WebSphere Message Broker V6, and adds further richness with WebSphere DataStage TX transformation capabilities.

WebSphere DataStage TX enables users to handle the hardest, ugliest transformation challenges — complex, semi-structured, interdependent, and disparate data types. While some users will find the Map node built into WebSphere Message Broker V6 — or any of the Broker's other transformation options such as XSLT, ESQL Compute, or Java Compute — to be suitable for their needs, others with more complex transformation requirements, will see significant additional value in WebSphere DataStage TX. In particular, companies with complex requirements involving EDI and HIPAA may find significant value. Companies with existing DataStage TX skills may also see value in deploying WebSphere DataStage TX as their "standard" transformation option for all Broker transformation interactions.

The benefits of WebSphere DataStage TX on top of WebSphere Message Broker are twofold — both existing WebSphere Message Broker customers and existing WebSphere DataStage TX customers will benefit from this combination. WebSphere Message Broker V6 is an outstanding runtime environment providing the following pre-built capabilities:

  • End-to-end transaction management
  • Scalability, performance, load balancing, and high availability
  • End-to-end security
  • Substantial pre-built interfaces to databases and mainframe environments
  • Publish/subscribe messaging, message replay, event stream processing
  • Web services interactions

Those WebSphere DataStage TX customers who are currently hosting WebSphere DataStage TX maps on their own application code (effectively they have built their own broker) might find that they can shrink their cost of overall management by porting their application to WebSphere Message Broker with DataStage TX instead. The WebSphere Message Broker is built upon the proven capabilities of WebSphere MQ which abstracts the concept of location, language, and platform. WebSphere Message Broker takes this abstraction concept further by abstracting the communications themselves. Its purpose is to enable nearly any type of application to communicate with nearly any other with little to no disruption to existing applications or their interfaces. Together with WebSphere MQ, Message Broker already mediates between a huge array of different platforms, devices, protocols, programming languages, programming models, and data representations. Now, with WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker, Message Broker customers can extend these capabilities even further.

WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker is based on technology from Ascential®. Ascential is an IBM company.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Administration of the program is controlled by the Message Broker Toolkit for WebSphere Studio which contains the Eclipse node. The externals exposed through the Eclipse node attributes editor meet the requirements for keyboard access, object information, sounds, display, timing, documentation, and accessibility testing.

The Message Flow Editor overview and palette are not accessible — they do not allow keyboard access to all functions. This is due to the underlying Flow Composition Builder (FCB) Eclipse component, which does not provide keyboard support.

Product positioning

Handling large and complex data requirements

WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker introduces additional transformation capabilities and usability for use with WebSphere Message Broker. WebSphere DataStage TX Extender for Message Broker is installed on top of WebSphere Message Broker in order to handle complex data transformation requirements, together providing the highest integration capabilities.

The Extender adds further data transformation for batch and complex nested and hierarchical data types to WebSphere Message Broker environments, and includes enhanced support for industry data libraries such as SWIFT and HIPAA.

Consolidating your infrastructure

The Extender allows users of both WebSphere Message Broker and WebSphere DataStage TX to consolidate their integration infrastructure and adds value in the following situations:

  • Where the customer requires support for multiple data sources with interdependencies
  • Where the customer requires very efficient processing of large data records or messages

Charge metrics definitions

Processor

In Full Capacity charging, PoEs must be acquired for all activated processors (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.

  1. If there are program components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information.
  2. IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  3. Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each core to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  4. In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux™ (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single physical processor.
  5. Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  6. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
