Overview

IBM Tape Manager for z/VM® can help z/VM system administrators and operators manage, monitor, and protect tape resources on z/VM systems. By helping to automate common daily tape operations and eliminate tedious, often error-prone, manual steps, Tape Manager can increase data availability and improve administrator productivity.

Tape Manager for z/VM V1.2.0 is designed to deliver:

  • Improved management of the tape catalog, including alternate message routing and real-time threshold monitoring.
  • Improved management of user access to tape data via data security erase. Additional maintenance of catalog data when a tape is marked scratch is also provided.
  • Improved administration of tape manager service machines, including configuration validation and status messages at startup, additional queries to determine the status of Tape Manager service machines, and improved data recovery when the Library Management Machine or Device Management Machine must be restarted.
  • Increased flexibility for customers using Removable Media Manager on z/OS® (RMM) as the tape catalog for z/VM and z/OS tapes.
  • Includes additional functions for end users and administrators, such as Non-Label and Bypass Label Processing support and ejecting tapes from ATLs.

Description

Tape Manager for z/VM helps automate common daily tape operations and helps eliminate tedious, often error-prone, manual tasks. By managing and monitoring tape resources, Tape Manager increases data availability and improves operator efficiency. Tape Manager can be used in either a stand-alone z/VM environment, or in conjunction with IBM DFSMSrmm™ to manage z/VM and z/OS tape resources.

V1.2.0 of Tape Manager for z/VM provides the following additional functions:

  • Improved management of user access to tape data

    Security of data on tape is improved in Tape Manager V1.2.0 with a data security erase (DSE) function. This option performs a full erase of data on a tape when its status changes to free. Specifically, when a tape is marked as free, the DSE flag is turned on. The tape will not be considered scratch and available for reuse until the DSE is performed. The erase is performed by a new Tape Manager service machine, which, when scheduled, searches for all tapes marked as DSE-ready, then for each one, it performs a full erase of the tape data and resets the DSE flag to allow the tape to be reused. By scheduling the DSE process, you can avoid an immediate erase if a tape is freed by mistake.

  • Improved management of the tape catalog

    By providing additional tape catalog functions, Tape Manager V1.2.0 can help improve administrator productivity and catalog accuracy.

    For customers using ATLs, Tape Manager V1.2.0 provides a utility to verify that tapes marked as ATL in the tape catalog are in fact in the ATL and available. If a tape is found in the tape catalog but not in the ATL, then one of several optional actions can be taken, including warning one or more administrators, placing the tape in HOLD status, or updating the Tape Manager catalog to indicate the tape is no longer in the ATL and now requires a manual mount.

    With Tape Manager V1.2.0, administrators can be notified of additional operational updates to the tape catalog. First, threshold monitoring of tape pools is provided on a real-time basis. Rather than waiting for a nightly report, administrators can set a threshold and have the administrator message ID notified immediately if it's reached. A separate user ID for each tape pool can be defined to also receive the threshold warning. In addition, rather than having all mount messages go to the operations IDs, alternate IDs can be defined to receive tape mount messages for specific pools. Previously, only Tape Manager system operators could receive these messages.

    Tape Manager V1.2.0 includes a new catalog verification utility which reviews and verifies data in the tape catalog, including consistency checking between private pools and the system inventory, validation of data formats and types for all records in the catalog, and validation of media types against the system media file.

  • Improved administration of Tape Manager service machines

    Tape Manager V1.2.0 can help reduce run-time errors by performing additional validation of the configuration information at Tape Manager startup. When an error, or potential error, is discovered, a detailed error message is displayed on the administrator and operator consoles. During startup, additional status and progress information is also displayed on the Tape Management Machine (TMM) console. This is especially useful to customers with large tape inventories that must be loaded when Tape Manager is started.

    When Tape Manager is running, administrators can now issue commands to query the status of each Tape Manager Device Management Machine (DMM) and Library Management Machine (LMM), in addition to the existing queries for Tape Management Machine (TMM). This can be done from any administrator ID, using an SMSG-based request.

    Improvements have also been made for situations that require the DMM or LMM to be restarted, including improved recovery of the current configuration data.

  • Improved recovery of a tape catalog entry

    The tape attribute information is now maintained in the tape catalog until the tape volume is actually re-written, rather than just marked as free. (A data security erase is considered a re-write of the tape.) This improves the administrator's ability to recover a tape catalog entry for a tape that was inadvertently freed or scratched.

  • Additional flexibility for customers using Tape Manager in RMM mode

    A new configuration option allows Tape Manager to force a tape to be unloaded under the following circumstances:

    • A scratch mount request fails because RMM indicates the tape is not actually a scratch tape
    • The premounted tape volume is not in the RMM inventory

    Tape Manager administrators can now mount scratch tapes by specific volser, a function not ordinarily permitted by RMM.

  • Additional enhancements for end users and administrators

    In addition to Standard Labels (SL), Tape Manager V1.2.0 provides support for Non-Label (NL) tapes and support for Bypass Label Processing (BLP) mount requests in both standard mode and RMM mode. Specific authorization is required for a user to mount a Non-Label tape or to mount a tape with the BLP option. When the SL or NL option is specified on the mount request, Tape Manager will verify that the actual tape is NL or SL as requested. SL tapes can not be mounted using the NL option, and vice versa.

    For customers using ATLs, Tape Manager V1.2.0 allows you to eject a tape cartridge from the ATL (for example, for off-site storage). The tape catalog is automatically updated to indicate the tape is no longer in the ATL and now requires a manual mount.

    Tape Manager V1.2.0 provides improved device management by detaching non-dedicated devices that remain unused or unallocated for a specified period of time.

    Improved flexibility for retries when a mount request fails is also provided by V1.2.0 of Tape Manager. Examples of failure conditions that will result in a retry include incorrect external labels on tapes (for manual mounts), a Non-Label tape mounted for a Standard Label request (or vice versa), or RMM errors such as "not a scratch volume" and "volume not found" (for scratch mount requests against an ATL).

Engine-based Value Unit pricing

Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Tape Manager for z/VM is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance.

There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Tape Manager has already been installed.

Note: Value units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Tape Manager for z/VM is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support, and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.

Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

Tape Manager for z/VM V1.2.0 will operate on any hardware that supports the prerequisite software.

Tape Manager will operate any tape device supported by a supported level of CMS. Support for sharing of tape devices requires 3480 tape devices, or later.

Software requirements

All prerequisites and corequisites for these products apply.

The products listed here are supported only while service is available for those products.

Tape Manager V1.2.0 requires

  • One of the following:
    • z/VM V4.4 (5739-A03), or later
    • z/VM V5.1 (5741-A05), or later
  • One of the following:
  • DFSMS Removable Media Services (RMS), a feature of z/VM, for support of an Automated Tape Library (ATL) or Virtual Tape Server (VTS)

When using Tape Manager with DFSMSrmm™, the following are required:

  • z/OS® V1.4 (5694-A01), or later
  • The DFSMSrmm optional feature of the z/OS release installed
  • A TCP/IP connection between the z/VM and z/OS systems that will be sharing the RMM tape catalog

Compatibility: Tape Manager for z/VM V1.2.0 is upwardly compatible with Tape Manager for z/VM V1.1.0. All configuration files created with V1.1.0 will continue to work with V1.2.0.

Terms and conditions

Licensing: IBM International Program License Agreement and License Information document. Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) are required for all authorized use.

These products are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA), and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provides for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours) as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty applies: Yes

Warranty: This program includes a warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. For one year from acquisition of the program, this warranty provides the customer with access to databases containing program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or otherwise obtain and install.

Program support: Enhanced support, called Subscription and Support, includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours) as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect. The customer will be notified of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund. For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

  • Your entitlement is for only the quantity of engine-based Value Units licensed. These engine-based Value Units can be for either standard or IFL engines.
  • When ordering Tape Manager to operate on standard engines (CPs) for a single server within the enterprise, you must specify Value Units equal to the Value Units to cover the number of standard engines (CPs) on your zSeries 990, 900, 890, 800, System z9™, or S/390® server.
  • When ordering Tape Manager to operate on IFL engines for a single server within the enterprise, you must specify Value Units equal to the Value Units to cover the number of IFL engines on your zSeries 990, 900, 890, 800, System z9, or S/390 server.
  • When ordering Tape Manager to operate on standard engines (CPs) and IFL engines for a single server within the enterprise, you must specify Value Units equal to the Value Units to cover the total number of engines (standard plus IFL) on your zSeries 990, 900, 890, 800, System z9, or S/390 server.
