Overview
AIX 5L V5.2, AIX® 5L V5.3, and the Advanced POWER Virtualization feature (enabled through the order of VIOS) will support the new IBM POWER processor-based IBM BladeCenter® JS21, effective March 10, 2006. Advanced POWER Virtualization enables you to consolidate and integrate both AIX 5L and Linux applications such as database, IT infrastructure, e-mail, and Web serving onto the BladeCenter platform.
Support of Advanced POWER Virtualization on the BladeCenter JS21 brings the power of virtualization to IBM's entry-level POWER processor-based product. Advanced POWER Virtualization on the BladeCenter JS21 is distinct from Advanced POWER Virtualization on eServer® p5 and System p5 servers. On the BladeCenter JS21, Advanced POWER Virtualization is available as an option by ordering VIOS and is managed through the Integrated Virtualization Manager Interface, a component of VIOS.
The BladeCenter JS21 does not support Partition Load Manager, nor can it be managed by a Hardware Management Console (HMC).
New processor group support
The BladeCenter JS21 types 8844 and 8842 and BladeCenter JS20 type 8842 are in the AIX 5L and Advanced POWER Virtualization processor group classification C5. The quantity of AIX 5L or Virtual I/O Server licenses (ordered to enable Advanced POWER Virtualization) ordered for use on either single or multiple BladeCenter JS21 or JS20 systems must be equal to the number of processors on which the programs are intended to be used at a single end-user customer (single IBM customer number) location.
Additionally, ordering AIX 5L and Virtual I/O Server (needed to enable Advanced POWER Virtualization) processor group C5 licenses for BladeCenter JS21 or JS20 systems requires order placement of a 90-day, one-year, or three-year Software Maintenance Agreement (SWMA) for AIX 5L or VIOS at the same time as the order placement for program licenses. Neither program licenses nor SWMA for AIX 5L or VIOS prices are included in the BladeCenter JS21 or JS20 system offering price.
Statement of direction
Withdrawal of support for 32-bit kernel in AIX
Future releases of AIX following AIX 5L V5.3 will only support the 64-bit kernel. The 64-bit kernel in these future releases will continue to support 32-bit applications, but will not support 32-bit kernel extensions or device drivers.
All statements regarding IBM's future direction and intent are subject to change or withdrawal
without notice, and represent goals and objectives only. Contact your local IBM office or IBM
authorized reseller for the full text of a specific Statement of General Direction.

Key prerequisites
- Hardware requirements: Advanced POWER Virtualization in the C5 processor group is supported on BladeCenter JS21 models 8844-31x and 8844-51x.
- Software requirements: The Advanced POWER Virtualization program requires a one-year or three-year SWMA contract or Advanced POWER Virtualization contract at the time of order placement.

Description
Terminology changes
AIX 5L Recommended Maintenance Packages, formerly referred to as Maintenance Levels, have been renamed to Technology Levels. Like the past Maintenance Levels, Technology Levels can include fixes for AIX 5L problems, support for new hardware, and new AIX 5L functionality.
The term interim fix replaces the previously used term emergency fix or efix and refers to fixes other than program temporary fixes (PTFs) that are provided to solve a specific problem for a single customer. While the term emergency fix is still applicable in some situations (for example, a fix given in the middle of the night with minimal testing), the term interim fix is more descriptive in that it implies a temporary state until an update can be applied that has been through more extensive testing.
New service options
IBM will provide additional service options for AIX 5L. These new options are in addition to the service options that have been available in the past.
Service Pack
In addition to releasing individual PTFs to address critical customer issues, IBM will periodically release groups of PTFs in a new service delivery package called a Service Pack. The Service Pack concept will allow fixes that are released between Technology Levels to be tested, ordered, and installed as a group. Service Packs will include fixes for highly pervasive, critical, or security-related issues. Service Packs will be provided for the N and N-1 releases (for example, 5.3 and 5.2) on the latest Technology Level for each release (for example, 5300-04 and 5200-08), and they will be released approximately every four to six weeks. Each Service Pack is cumulative with previous Service Packs, and Service Packs are intended to only contain fixes for AIX 5L, not new hardware support or new AIX 5L functionality. Applying and rejecting an individual service update (PTF) will continue to be supported.
Concluding Service Pack
Concluding Service Pack (CSP) is a new term that will identify the last Service Pack for a particular Technology Level and will provide a base to allow IBM to provide extended support for a Technology Level. Concluding Service Packs will be released for the preceding Technology Level, a few weeks after the succeeding Technology Level is released. For example, Concluding Service Pack 4 (the last Service Pack for Technology Level 5300-04) will be released a few weeks after Technology Level 5300-05 is released.
Like a Service Pack, the Concluding Service Pack will contain fixes for highly pervasive, critical, or security-related issues, but it may also contain fixes from the newly released Technology Level that fall into these categories. So, in some cases, a Concluding Service Pack may contain a very small subset of fixes that were included in the newest Technology Level. Concluding Service Packs will cumulatively include all fixes that were released in previous Service Packs.
Extended support for technology levels
In the past, customers were sometimes compelled to update to the latest Recommended Maintenance Package/Maintenance Level to get fixes for AIX 5L problems. IBM is providing a new option for customers to continue to get service on the previous Technology Level for up to six months after the succeeding Technology Level is released.
To get this extended support, the customer will have to install the Concluding Service Pack for their current release. Once the customer's system is at the Concluding Service Pack level, IBM AIX 5L support will then provide customers with interim fixes to fix their specific issues.
Note: IBM can provide customers with PTFs or interim fixes on the most current Technology Level, but can only provide interim fixes for customers who are using the Concluding Service Pack to extend the service life of a particular Technology Level.
Customers who are unable to use interim fixes to correct AIX 5L problems between Technology Level updates will have to use the standard approach of upgrading to the latest Technology Level before IBM can provide a PTF for the customer problem. IBM cannot provide PTFs for the previous Technology Level after a new Technology Level is released. For example, IBM cannot provide a PTF for level 5300-04 after level 5300-05 has been released.
Although it is IBM's intent to provide customers with interim fixes for up to six months after the
release of the latest Technology Level, there may be cases where a customer would be required to
update to the latest Technology Level to address specific problems.
