Overview

TXSeries™ for Multiplatforms V6.0, the next generation of distributed CICS®, removes all dependencies on separate Encina® and DCE technologies. Equivalent function is now provided in two core components:

  • Entry-level CICS Online Transaction Processor (OLTP)
  • Integrated CICS Structured File Server (SFS)

Support is initially provided on the AIX® platform, with other platforms to follow. Encina is no longer required or supplied. For more information, refer to the Statement of direction section.

TXSeries is a rapid deployment non-J2EE integration server. It has extensive support for many enterprise information systems (EIS) including IBM CICS Transaction Server, IMS™, DB2®, WebSphere® MQ, and WebSphere Application Server. It can use TCP/IP and SNA-based communication protocols. The three most common integration server deployment scenarios are:

  • A consolidating mid-tier terminal server
  • An intelligent mid-tier gateway between a J2EE application server and more than one EIS
  • A comprehensive mid-tier integration server

TXSeries is an entry-level non-J2EE transaction server. It offers base level CICS programming interfaces, enabling industry-specific COBOL, C, C++, PL/1 and Core Java™ specialists to create simple solutions for business-critical transaction processing. It is the only distributed OLTP designed to enable you to scale up to CICS Transaction Server on the mainframe if your business requirements grow. The three most common transaction server deployment scenarios are:

  • Entry-level, stand-alone transaction server
  • Non-J2EE server in a mixed workload environment
  • Distributed server with mainframe connectivity

New in TXSeries for Multiplatforms V6.0:

  • Simplified environment where the previous dependencies on separate DCE and Encina products have been completely removed
  • Equivalent DCE and Encina function now fully integrated
  • Better security handling when using TXSeries in conjunction with a mainframe

Description

TXSeries for Multiplatforms V6.0 is the next generation of distributed CICS. It provides a stand-alone, entry-level, OLTP server for simple, business-critical applications written in enterprise programming languages like COBOL, C, C++, PL/1, and Core Java. Java support (JCICS) assists interoperability with Java applications running outside of TXSeries. CICS Foundation classes (CFC) support access to CICS facilities as C++ objects.

TXSeries for Multiplatforms delivers the base CICS functionality of previous versions of distributed CICS, but without the DCE or Encina prerequisites. The function provided by DCE and Encina is replaced with equivalent systems functions within the CICS OLTP and CICS SFS. Installation, configuration, and administration are simplified, enabling system programmers and administrators to become more productive.

TXSeries for Multiplatforms includes two core components:

  • Entry-level CICS OLTP
  • Integrated CICS SFS

CICS OLTP supports the base-level CICS API with the fundamental transactional qualities of atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. Developers can focus on the application logic rather than failure detection, failure recovery, and synchronizing access to shared data.

CICS SFS is a VSAM emulating, record-oriented file system that can provide indexed, relative, and sequential access to file-based data. It allows developers to store fully recoverable file-based data that can be processed in a batch environment. The CICS SFS files can be shared among TXSeries, CICS Transaction Server, and non-CICS applications such as IMS. This maximizes the ability to interoperate in an enterprise environment.

The design of TXSeries for Multiplatforms facilitates best practices of CICS program design by supporting the separation of the presentation logic, integration logic, business logic, and data access logic elements of an application. This enables COBOL, C, C++, PL/1, and Core Java specialists to develop modern, reusable applications that fit into a corporation's enterprise-wide requirements.

TXSeries for Multiplatforms is ideally suited to deployment in two common scenarios

A rapid deployment non-J2EE integration server: As a rapid deployment non-J2EE integration server, TXSeries for Multiplatforms has extensive support for many enterprise information systems (EIS) such as CICS Transaction Server, IMS, DB2, WebSphere MQ, and WebSphere Application Server. It can use TCP/IP and SNA-based communication protocols. The ability to run intelligent business logic in a mid-tier environment that supports the same languages and APIs as the systems that require the integration enables a complex integration solution to be deployed extremely rapidly. Common integration server deployment scenarios include:

  • As a consolidating mid-tier terminal server, between internal customer service representatives at end-user terminals, using industry-specific graphical or screen-based interfaces to access applications and data from more than one EIS
  • As an intelligent mid-tier gateway between a J2EE application server that delivers intuitive interface-rich Web content to Internet users who are unknowingly accessing applications and data from more than one EIS
  • As a comprehensive mid-tier integration server for applications and data residing on more than one heterogeneous EIS, as a result of consolidation within a corporation, or after a merger or acquisition, for example.

An entry-level non-J2EE transaction server: As an entry-level non-J2EE transaction server, TXSeries for Multiplatforms provides base-level CICS programming interfaces, allowing industry-specific COBOL, C, C++, PL/1, and Core Java specialists to create simple solutions for business-critical transaction processing. TXSeries supports screen-based terminals and provides programming interfaces for connectivity with graphics-rich displays, depending on the business requirement. Data can be accessed from the integrated CICS Structured File Server, local and remote RDBMS such as DB2, or messaging subsystems like WebSphere MQ. With excellent enterprise integration support, TXSeries is ideal for creating mainframe value-add or stand-alone distributed transaction processing solutions. Common transaction server deployment scenarios include:

  • As an entry-level, stand-alone transaction server for industry-specific applications written in COBOL, C, C++, PL/1, or Core Java applications running inside TXSeries, or where TXSeries provides the transactional run time for a vendor-produced packaged application
  • As a stand-alone COBOL, C, C++, PL/1 or Core Java transaction server, connecting to a stand-alone J2EE application server, such as WebSphere, delivering high-performing transactional applications that are tightly integrated with graphics-rich intuitive applications developed in J2EE
  • As a physically distributed transaction server for simple CICS workloads that require a level of local branch-level processing before periodically replicating the data with a back-end mainframe system

New in TXSeries for Multiplatforms V6.0: Support for TXSeries for Multiplatforms is initially provided on AIX with other platforms to follow. Refer to the Statement of direction section for more information.

  • CICS processes now communicate using secure shared memory, which can enhance the performance and security of applications with zero configuration or administration required.
  • No user intervention is required to configure or manage communication. All CICS users, especially system administrators, can be more productive because of the simplified environment.
  • The Encina prerequisite is no longer required or supplied with TXSeries. Major function is now fully integrated with the base CICS OLTP and CICS SFS supplied with the TXSeries product.
  • Users and administrators require less understanding of configuration and concepts, with a single command set providing all the required operations.

Clients who use only the Encina OLTP monitor function in isolation from the base CICS OLTP server function should not upgrade to TXSeries V6.0.

Security handling is also simplified when you use TXSeries in conjunction with a mainframe. The new External Authentication Manager (EAM) module uses the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to integrate with the version of RACF® that is supplied with z/OS® V1.7, or later. All system users can be centrally defined and maintained in a RACF repository. Users and system administrators maintain a single user ID and password for both TXSeries and CICS Transaction Server.

Installation and version-to-version migration is significantly enhanced with ISMP as the installer on all platforms. Using an industry-standard installation program enables quick and easy customization. ISMP can be run as a GUI, a command-line console, or as a silent install with no user interaction. In addition, ISMP makes it easier to integrate into packaged applications that rely on the transaction monitor facilities of the TXSeries OLTP as a component of larger industry-specific solutions.

TXSeries for Multiplatforms extends support for the most recent versions of other products that are commonly used by TXSeries clients, including databases, communications subsystems, and system compilers for all supported programming languages. Also added is support for Acucorp open systems COBOL called ACUCOBOL-GT. This COBOL development system includes a compiler, a source-level interactive debugger, and nearly a dozen support utilities. ACUCOBOL-GT lets you write a program once and run it in any other TXSeries platform without recompiling.

Major revision to the documentation library provides a much clearer product overview, leading to faster and easier product deployment and administration. The TXSeries documentation is dramatically reduced in size and complexity:

  • The concepts and planning guide is completely revised.
  • A single installation guide is available for all platforms, reflecting easier installation and configuration.
  • The documentation library is fully incorporated into the standard Eclipse-based information center. You can search all installed Eclipse-based IBM information centers in one search. Systems administrators who want to quickly understand the components of the system and how they are used can do this more efficiently and effectively.

Also included is a new system function diagnostic facility that provides additional internal state information. This facility can help IBM support representatives to remotely diagnose potential problems.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Supports interfaces commonly used by screen readers
  • Can be operated using only the keyboard
  • Does not require the user to make responses within time limits
  • Has command-line interfaces to allow for customization of display attributes such as color, contrast, and font size
  • Communicates all information independent of color
  • Supports interfaces commonly used by screen magnifiers
  • Provides documentation in an accessible format
  • Does not flash the screen at rates that could induce epileptic seizures
  • Has accessible command-line or text file-based interfaces for core functions provided by GUI

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

TXSeries for Multiplatforms is capable, as of January 13, 2006, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Statement of direction

TXSeries for Multiplatforms V6 is initially provided on the AIX platform, with other platforms to follow. IBM will extend TXSeries for Multiplatforms V6 to Microsoft™ Windows™ in 2006.

Beginning with V6.0, the Encina product will no longer be shipped with the CICS product as part of TXSeries for Multiplatforms. All dependencies of the distributed CICS server on a separate Encina product have been removed. Clients who use only the Encina OLTP Monitor function (separate from the base CICS OLTP Monitor function) should not upgrade to TXSeries for Multiplatforms V6.

Clients who need the Encina function should continue to purchase and use TXSeries for Multiplatforms V5.1. IBM plans to continue support for the Encina functionality in the TXSeries for Multiplatforms V5.1 package via Passport Advantage® contracts through at least April 2009. Clients who continue to need support services for the Encina product after the end of Passport Advantage support will be able to purchase extended support contracts. Charge metrics definitions

Processor: In full capacity charging, Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.

  • If there are program components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the program-unique terms of the License Information.
  • IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  • Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called cores) to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each core to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
  • In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux™ (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single physical processor.
  • Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.

Sub-capacity processor: The required authorized use level for eligible programs is based upon the highest utilization of the partitions where the program or a component of the program, executes. Customer agrees to periodically report program use to IBM using an IBM license management tool.

  • The number of authorizations you must acquire is the smaller value of either of the following methods:
    • The total number of activated (available for use) processors in the machine
    • The sum of the following items (any remaining fraction of a processor must be rounded up to a full processor in the final aggregation):
      • When the program is run in partitions with dedicated processors, the sum of the processing units of those partitions
      • When the program is run in partitions that are members of a shared processing pool, the smaller of:
        • The number of processors assigned to the pool
        • The sum of the virtual processors of each uncapped partition plus the processing units in each capped partition running a program
  • z/VM® guest charging
    • The total number of activated (available for use) processors in the machine
    • The sum of the following items (any remaining fraction of a processor must be rounded up to a full processor in the final aggregation):
      • When the program is run in VM guests with dedicated processors, the sum of the Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) engines of those VM guests
      • When the program is run in VM Guests that are members of a shared processing pool (z/VM), the smaller of:
        • The number of processors assigned to the z/VM pool
        • The sum of the IFL engines in each z/VM pool running a program

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products: Sub-capacity licensing on a per-processor basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Manager within their offerings so that customers can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on their use of the programs on a continuous basis.

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing: To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

If you order this product under sub-capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub-capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process). You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

Program services

Warranty: This program includes a warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. For one year from acquisition of the program, this warranty provides the customer with access to databases containing program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or otherwise obtain and install.

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. Customers will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund.

  • For programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
  • For programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your IS technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate but complementary elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Service Agent™.

Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems.
