Cluster Systems Management (CSM) V1.5 is designed to help reduce the overall cost and complexity of IT management by simplifying the tasks of installing, configuring, operating, and maintaining clusters of servers or logical partitions (LPARs). CSM offers a single consistent interface for managing both AIX 5L and Linux nodes, with capabilities for remote parallel network installation, remote hardware control, distributed command execution, file collection and distribution, and cluster-wide monitoring capabilities. CSM V1.5 improvements include:
- Support for IBM BladeCenter® HS40 and LS20
- Enhancements to allow CSM to help install, configure, and monitor applications (specifically, GPFS, LoadLeveler®, Parallel Environment, ESSL, and Parallel ESSL).
- Ability to run IBM Web-based System Manager on a management server running CSM for Linux on POWER.
- Full interoperability of all combinations of CSM-supported hardware and operating systems.
- Enhancements to distributed command execution (dsh) so that it runs faster and can work with non-CSM node groups

CSM V1.5.0 is designed to offer simple, low-cost management of distributed and clustered IBM servers. For organizations with both Linux and AIX 5L applications, a single CSM management console running on AIX 5L or Linux can provide management services to AIX® 5L and Linux clients in distributed and clustered configurations.
CSM is also a key element of the Cluster 1600 and Cluster 1350, platforms that are ideal for workload consolidation or for achieving high degrees of scalability and performance for applications that take advantage of clustered systems architectures. Primary examples are computational modeling in high-performance computing or multi-terabyte data warehouses in large corporations.
The CSM licensed products include:
- CSM for AIX 5L
- CSM for Linux on POWER
- CSM for Linux Multiplatform (xSeries, BladeCenters, e325, e326)
Release 1.5.0 includes the following support:
- New hardware support: IBM BladeCenter HS40 and LS20

Web-based System Manager enhancements
IBM Web-based System Manager can now run on a management server running CSM for Linux on POWER. Also, the Web-based System Manager client can now be downloaded from a management server running CSM for Linux on POWER.
Full interoperability of all combinations of CSM-supported hardware and CSM-supported operating
systems. Any of the following can manage or be managed by any of the following:
- CSM-supported pSeries® machines running a CSM-supported version of AIX 5L
- CSM-supported pSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of RedHat
- CSM-supported pSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of SLES
- CSM-supported xSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of RedHat
- CSM-supported xSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of SLES
- CSM-supported iSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of AIX 5L
- CSM-supported iSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of RedHat
- CSM-supported iSeries machines running a CSM-supported version of SLES
- Enhancements to distributed command execution (dsh) so that it runs faster, and can work with NIM and IBM Director node groups.
Improvements for CSM installs
- You can optionally use HTTP instead of NFS to serve files during the installation of the Red Hat Linux or SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server operating system. CSM can automatically set up the Apache HTTP server on the install servers.
- Increased flexibility in the DHCP configuration. A new mkdhcp tool allows nodes, node ranges, networks, and subnets to be added or removed from the dhcpd.conf file. This also allows the installation of xSeries nodes that are not in the same subnet as their install server.
- A new sample script allows you to update the kernel of a node during installation.
- Improved performance of the following commands: installms, copycsmpkgs, csmsetupks, and csmsetupyast.
- Any number of nodes can now be specified with all CSM commands. The maximum command-line length previously limited the size of the node list.
Secondary adapter support
This release includes enhancements to its support for secondary adapter configurations. CSM now helps you gather adapter information from cluster nodes and automatically configures those adapters as part of a node installation or update. Secondary adapters are any network adapters other than the adapter that is used to install the node over a network. The new CSM support is provided for both AIX and Linux nodes through the "updatenode -c" command. On AIX nodes, CSM supports the configuration of Ethernet, HPS (switch), and Multilink adapters. On Linux nodes, CSM supports the configuration of Ethernet adapters.
Remote hardware inventory and maintenance support
This release includes the following support:
- The new rfwscan command provides the same function for x-86-based based xSeries and servers as the existing scanbios command, with enhancements that allow scanning of these systems in a pre-operating system (pre-OS) environment.
- The rfwflash command has been enhanced to enable BIOS flashing for x-86-based xSeries and servers in a pre-OS environment.
- You can now use the update packages found on the Update Xpress Linux Server Update CDs (including the JS20 BladeServer package).
- The rfwcfg command has been enhanced to provide pre-OS environment support for x-86 based xSeries and servers. Also, an updated version of the Advanced Settings Utility, V1.4.0, is now used to perform the CMOS configuration on the target systems.
This release includes the following usability improvements:
- The rpower command has been enhanced as follows.
- The new state operand displays a textual representation of the current power state of the node.
- The new -f (force) flag of the query operand forces a poll, bypassing (and refreshing) the event cache.
- The -m (mode) flag of the cec_on operand is now optional. Also, the new standby and autostart modes are available for POWER5 systems only. (For POWER4 systems: If you do not specify a mode, the current mode is used. For POWER5 systems: If you do not specify a mode, a default of autostart is used.)
- The cfmupdatenode command now distributes files and directories alphabetically sorted by name, which allows you to know the running order of each .pre and .post script.
- The new-force flag of the cfmupdatenode command forces the distribution of files and ignores return code values from .pre and .post scripts.
- The nodeset command has three new flags which allow you to choose a boot kernel file, a ramdisk file, or a template of the PXE configuration file, instead of those provided by CSM.
- The new -nosms flag of the -installnode command allows you to skip SMS after the installation of the operating system has completed.
- The definenode command now allows you to define a nested node definition file (a node definition file within another node definition file).
- The lshwstat command now writes the HWSerialNum attribute of related nodes to the CSM database.
- The rmnode command and the -D flag of the nodegrp command now remove all traces of the node from the management server and the install server.
- You can now automate detecting, defining, and installing a node into a CSM cluster. This function is referred to as provisioning a node. CSM provides a sample script to give you an example of how to provision a node based on a predefined node profile.
- The CSM probe ibm.csm.ms has been enhanced to verify that CSM directories are created and have the correct permissions.
- A new ibm.csm.monitor probe allows you to check whether the monitoring system (ERRM on the management server and SensorRM on the nodes) is working correctly.
- The -f flag of the definenode command now allows the use of the equal sign (=) inside attribute values.
High Availability Management Server (HA MS)
On all platforms, the optional CSM HA MS is designed to prevent the management server from being a single point of failure in the CSM cluster. CSM HA MS uses a shared disk to store the CSM management server's data and requires a backup management server with a similar configuration to the primary management server. CSM HA MS is designed to automate failover in response to failure conditions. Failover can also be triggered by the administrator in order to create maintenance windows.
Setting up CSM HA MS can be done at any time during the life of the cluster. While CSM HA MS is expected to only failover CSM management server functionality, you can define pre- and post-scripts to customize the failover. This can allow you to failover other subsystems or data as needed.

CSM for AIX 5L and Linux offers a way to manage a collection of AIX or Linux servers (nodes) from a single-point-of-control.

Functions include automated setup, hardware control, monitoring, and configuration file management. Administrators can manage individual nodes, run commands across nodes or groups of nodes, monitor system resources, and run automated responses to events. CSM is designed to exploit the advanced hardware management features of the servers in the Cluster 1600 or Cluster 1350, or a cluster of xSeries servers.
CSM includes technology derived from IBM Parallel System Support Programs (PSSP) for AIX and is positioned as a replacement offering to PSSP. It is aimed at customers who want robust cluster systems management on an AIX 5L or open, Intel-based server platform. CSM and the IBM Cluster 1600 or Cluster 1350 are ideal for high-performance and commercial computing workloads, including applications in scientific and technical computing, life sciences, and e-business infrastructure (for example, Web serving and collaboration/e-mail).
CSM delivers a robust, scalable management platform to help make administration easier. It may help reduce life cycle costs. Customers can manage their AIX 5L or Linux servers from a central location, rather than having to manage each system individually.
Customers can scale their systems incrementally as workload demand increases, without increasing the management complexity.
Customers may be able to benefit from IBM's established leadership in supercomputing systems because the technology and experienced skills from the SP and AIX platforms are being leveraged on Linux. Customers may be more willing to adopt Linux in a production environment when it is backed by superior management software.
CSM HA MS is positioned for the customer who needs a highly available management server. CSM HA MS is designed to remove the management server as a single point of failure from the cluster.

|Software key management|
The base CSM programs use an access/usage protection method that requires a password key to enable the software function. The key is contained in a file on the product medium and must be installed per the installation instructions.
The optional High Availability Management Server (HA MS) feature requires a separate order and uses an access/usage protection key which is contained in a file on the HA MS media and must be installed per the HA MS installation instructions.
CSM V1.5.0 is a replacement for all levels of CSM 1.4. Existing customers of CSM 1.4 may use their existing key file. No changes are required to use CSM V1.5.0. Existing customers of CSM for Linux should refresh their CSM media supply.
Try & Buy
You can experience the power and value of CSM and clustering at no charge for 60 days under the Try & Buy option. You can use all functions of CSM for those 60 days under the IBM International License Agreement for Evaluation of Programs (ILAE), after which CSM will no longer function. Whenever you purchase and receive a full production license and key for CSM (refer to the Ordering information section) and accept its IPLA License Agreement, you may use CSM for production purposes. CSM configuration data stored during Try & Buy will remain available for later production use.
HA MS is not included in the Try & Buy package.

CSM for Linux Multiplatform
CSM for Linux Multiplatform is a key element of the IBM Cluster 1350 platform for deploying Linux applications requiring a cluster.
Hardware supported (for full hardware control operations):
- IBM 325 and 326
- IBM xSeries® 335, 336, 345, 346, 360, 445
- IBM BladeCenter® 8677 HS20 (models 8678, 8832 and 8843), HS40, and LS20 servers

The following hardware and hardware specifications are required for CSM V1.5.0 for Linux Multiplatform:
On the CSM management server:
- One Ethernet adapter for each management virtual LAN (VLAN) used for hardware control
One Ethernet adapter for each cluster VLAN used for CSM installation and administration
Note: A Management VLAN is the VLAN that connects the management server to the terminal servers and the RSA PCIs, or hardware control points.
- Additional disk space on the management server for the Linux operating system and RPMs
- A minimum of 512 MB of memory and 250 MB of disk space to install CSM
- 2.0 GB of disk space for each version of Linux to be fully installed on the nodes
On each managed node:
- A minimum of 256 MB of memory and 40 MB of disk space to install and run CSM
- Additional disk space for the Linux operating system and RPMs
- TCP/IP and a minimum of one PXE-enabled network adapter for the cluster VLAN used for CSM installation and administration
- Appropriate cabling
For CSM V1.5.0 optional hardware control to function properly, the following hardware and hardware specifications are required:
One RSA PCI adapter for every 24 nodes
Note: RSA PCI adapters are not required to manage the following hardware:
- eServer® HS20 or HS40 blade servers

A terminal server is not required for remote console support of xSeries 336 or xSeries 346 servers. These servers support Serial-Over-LAN and will allow remote console access directly from the CSM management server.
In addition, the following blade servers do not require a terminal server for remote console support:

- HS20 8843
- HS40 8839
- JS20 8842
- LS20 8850
Note: For xSeries and IntelliStations, if you do not have remote console support, automatic MAC address collection will not work for the full installation of Linux nodes.
For specific hardware control point and console server product details, refer to the documentation shipped with the hardware.
IBM suggests a networking configuration where each terminal server is connected to the management VLAN through its Ethernet port, and up to 48 nodes (depending on the terminal server type) through the nodes' serial or COM ports. IBM suggests that each IBM RSA PCI be connected to the management VLAN through its Ethernet port. However, to conserve IP addresses, one IBM RSA PCI could be connected to the management VLAN with up to 24 management processors daisy-chained from it to the management VLAN. For security considerations, CSM cluster hardware control functions must be restricted to users with root access by isolating the management server network.
Note: Certain configurations, including other Intel processor-based servers and other Linux distributions, may be requested by special bid.
To install SUSE nodes from a Red Hat management server or to install Red Hat nodes from a SUSE management server, a separate install server must be installed and configured with the target operating system that will be installed on those nodes. To install AIX 5L nodes from a Linux management server, a separate AIX 5L install server must be installed and configured.
CSM for Linux Multiplatform HA MS
CSM HA MS requires two management servers (a primary and a backup) with similar hardware
configurations. HA MS supports any supported CSM management server that has proper adapters for
connectivity to a shared disk. CSM HA MS also requires a shared disk connected to both management
servers, and supports the following shared disk hardware models. Refer to the IBM TotalStorage®
DS4000 series documentation for the list of operating systems that these disks support.
xSeries Linux management server:
- IBM TotalStorage DS4300 (formerly FAStT600)
- IBM TotalStorage DS4400 (formerly FAStT700)

CSM HA MS also requires that CSM V1.5 be installed on both management servers. CSM HA MS does not require the installation of any other HA product. All required software is included in CSM and HA MS.

- CSM for Linux Multiplatform V1.5.0 is a functional enhancement and replacement of CSM for Linux Multiplatform V1.4.
CSM requires that the CSM administrative network be an Ethernet network. However, CSM can tolerate any network architecture as a secondary network to the cluster.
Limitations Scaling limitations
Your CSM cluster must adhere to all of the following applicable limits. Your cluster size limit will be the smallest number of all applicable limits. Support for clusters above such limits will be considered via Special Bid.
Maximum number of operating system images:
- For supported xSeries based Linux systems, the cluster scaling limit is 1024 operating system images.
- For mixed cluster containing AIX 5L or Linux on POWER, additional limitations apply. Refer to Software Announcement 205-292 , dated November 8, 2005.
- The management server needs to be at the highest CSM level of any node in the cluster.
- There is limited hardware control support for the x440.
- Professional versions of Linux are not supported with CSM V1.5.
- For xSeries, if you do not have a terminal server, the remote console function (rconsole) will not work and automatic MAC address collection will not work for the full installation of Linux nodes.
Note: Technical support applies only to the IBM licensed products mentioned previously. If these products are running on an operating system (or with a corequisite, prerequisite product) that is no longer supported, IBM technical support may be limited to defects that can be replicated on supported environments (that is, supported versions of the operating systems).

All CSM products and their HA MS features on all platforms are each individual products with one charge unit: processor. The order quantity is the integer number of processors on which CSM or HA MS will be run, or to which CSM Remote Hardware Control commands will be issued.
Note: Ordering and billing is per physical processor, regardless of processor sharing ("sub-cpu LPARs").
A license key file is required to execute CSM and will be sent with the product order.
Existing CSM customers
CSM V1.5.0 is a replacement for CSM V1.4. Existing customers with active SWMA contracts are entitled to receive V1.5, should refresh their CSM media supply, and may use their existing 5765-E88 license key file. No key file changes are required to use CSM V1.5.0.
Note: CSM for Linux Multiplatform is orderable only via Passport Advantage.
CSM is installed once per instance of parent operating system on any server. One CSM management server is required per CSM cluster (refer to the Software requirements section). For example, if ordering CSM for three machines (a 4-way, an 8-way, and a 16-way), order three licenses with the respective quantities each (for a total quantity of 28). The block of 250 processors feature number is provided for convenience with large orders.
CSM HA MS must be ordered separately. On all platforms, base CSM is a prerequisite.
Software Maintenance for CSM and its optional feature should be ordered individually in a quantity equal to the sum of the number of processors on which CSM V1 or HA MS, respectively, will be installed and run.
New customers must order CSM V1.5.0 and, optionally, HA MS.
Important license information
This Program is eligible for sub-capacity pricing, usage and billing. Terms and conditions are detailed in the product license information document.
The required authorized use level for eligible Programs is based upon the highest utilization of the partitions where the Program or a component of the Program, executes. Customer agrees to periodically report Program use to IBM using an IBM license management tool.
The number of authorizations you must acquire is the smaller value of either of the following
- The total number of activated (available for use) processors in the machine, or
The sum of (i) and (ii) as follows (any remaining fraction of a processor must be rounded up to a
full processor in the final aggregation)
(i) When the Program is run in partitions with dedicated processors, the sum of the Processing Units of those partitions, and
(ii) When the Program is run in partitions that are members of a Shared Processing Pool, the smaller of:
- The number of processors assigned to the pool, or
- The sum of the Virtual Processors of each Uncapped Partition plus the Processing Units in each Capped Partition running a Program.
There is no change to the base billing features for CSM V1.

Warranty: This program has warranty for a minimum of one year from acquisition from IBM or authorized IBM Business Partner. The warranty provided to the customer, for at least one year from acquisition, is access to databases (read Web sites) for program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or obtain otherwise and install at leisure.
Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the Program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund. Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity, with voice and electronic access into IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option that is available.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at
Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions
To be eligible for Sub-Capacity Pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for Sub-Capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products apply when running
- AIX 5L V5.1, or later, on an IBM pSeries 690 or equivalent partition capable operating system and machine
- OS/400® V5.1, or later, running on an IBM iSeries Server
- Linux running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5.1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition capable operating system and Server
Sub-Capacity Pricing for eligible products is based on the current Program pricing methodology but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the Program is defined(used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:
- Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program which installs with eligible IBM Programs.
- Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
- If the use of Sub-Capacity Pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements, you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve then for future growth. There will be no refunds for these "freed up" entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and Support volumes and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.
On/Off Capacity on Demand
To be eligible for On/Off Capacity on Demand pricing, customers must be enabled for temporary
capacity on the corresponding hardware, and the required contract Z125-6907, Amendment for
iSeries and pSeries Temporary Capacity On Demand Software must be signed prior to use.

In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
