Overview

The Virtualization Engine™ platform includes a collection of virtualization management and services and offers comprehensive access and views. This platform approach supports a business policy-based infrastructure that allows for:

  • Flexible starting points based on current and future business and IT requirements
  • Virtualizing system resources to simplify systems management
  • Options that can be customized to your business needs
  • Virtual management applied to systems that make many small resources look like one system
  • Consistent expansion
  • Open interfaces and standards to allow other vendor products to participate in the infrastructure

IBM Director V5.10

While maximizing system availability, IBM Director can help reduce the cost and complexity of management with comprehensive administration of the entire environment from a single point of control. It features an open, integrated toolset with new functions and improved ease of use to help you get started faster and be more productive.

Virtualization Engine Console

This comprehensive set of management tasks leverages the Virtualization Engine management collection as well as your existing management structure and tools.

  • It discovers your environment and works with your existing management resources to harness their power into a consistent user experience.
  • Administrators can discover and explore relationships between IT resources in their virtualization environment, and manage these resources through a common set of tasks.
  • For deeper analysis and troubleshooting, the console works with your existing tools and technology to launch tools and applications, taking users to the tools they need.

Enterprise Workload Manager 2.1

EWLM offers a consolidated end-to-end view of transactions and their performance. It uses resource usage and delay statistics collected and correlated from various servers in the managed domain. Through the EWLM control center, administrators can perform the following tasks:

  • View the topology and monitor how well their prioritized business goals are being met.
  • Detect performance problems and potentially isolate the problem area.
  • Switch to application- and platform-specific monitoring tools to determine the root cause.

If additional server capacity is needed, administrators can use other tools, such as IBM Tivoli® Provisioning Manager, to add a server to the EWLM-managed domain.

Description

IBM Director V5.10

IBM Director offers a consistent, single point of management and automation for IBM and non-IBM systems. IBM Director V5.10 focuses on ease of use and delivers a more open, integrated toolset. New features include:

  • Broader platform coverage to support pSeries and p5 and Linux on zSeries and System z9 servers for use in a heterogeneous environment
  • New streamlined interface to boost productivity
  • Lightweight agents for easy deployment
  • Software health check to facilitate update management

IBM Director enables monitoring and event management across a heterogeneous IT environment, including Intel™ and POWER systems that support Microsoft™ Windows™, Linux, AIX 5L™, and i5/OS™ from a single Java™-based user interface. From one access point, users can monitor system resources, inventory, events, task management, core corrective actions, distributed commands, and hardware control for both servers and storage.

With the second release of the Virtualization Engine, IBM Director V5.10 broadens its platform coverage to include Windows, Linux on Intel, Linux on POWER, AIX®, i5/OS, and Linux on zSeries environments across IBM eServer pSeries, iSeries™, xSeries, zSeries, BladeCenter®, and OpenPower™ systems.

Additional new features include:

  • Integration with z/VM® for simplified Virtual Server Deployment on zSeries systems
  • Customizable table view of system detail that can be sorted and reordered
  • Event action plan wizard that helps you start monitoring the health of your new servers quickly
  • Improved interface for ease of use
  • Lighter-weight agents for ease of deployment

Virtualization Engine console

The Virtualization Engine console is the unified face for the Virtualization Engine that helps administrators discover and explore relationships between IT resources in their virtualization environment. Using this unified console, you can ascertain how a change in status for a particular hardware device or software component can affect related resources that support your business objectives.

Virtualization Engine Management Collection: Enterprise Workload Manager (EWLM)

EWLM optimizes the use of server, storage, and network resources based on business priority to achieve a cross-platform performance goal for a given application or service class. EWLM continues the evolution toward autonomic management of customer service objectives in heterogeneous, multi-tiered server environments. EWLM expands the set of operating system platforms supported as domain managers and managed servers that deliver end-to-end coverage of heterogeneous applications. This release also introduces dynamic, goal-oriented optimization algorithms for EWLM server resources to improve the management of logically partitioned i5 and p5 hardware.

EWLM enhancements enable dynamic partition management for POWER5™ systems based on business goals. The following new functions can help you achieve performance goals.

  • Dynamic LPAR CPU allocation adjustments
  • Dynamic detection of server
  • Application topology and the ability to influence network load-balancing decisions
  • Greater ease of use in systems management
  • Automated partition management to meet business goals

Dynamic policy-based workload management optimizes resources in multi-tier heterogeneous application environments. In addition, application performance can be measured against predefined goals by end-to-end collection and reporting. Both IBM and non-IBM platforms and operating systems are supported.

Managed processor: Charges are based on the activated processors (engines) on the machines in the computing environment affiliated with the program rather than on the server where the program is run. The managed processors that require Proof of Entitlement (PoE) (authorizations) are defined both in the Prices section of the announcement and the License Information's program-unique terms. For System z9 or zSeries machines, managed processors may be IFL engines, standard engines, or both, as appropriate.

  • If program components are included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the program-unique terms of the License Information.
  • IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
  • Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. With multicore technology, IBM considers each core to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, two physical processors reside on the single silicon chip.
  • The program may not run on some or all of the processors for which PoE (authorizations) are required by the program's valuation method.
  • In the zSeries Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single physical processor.
  • Threading, a technique that makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
  • Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blades with which the program is affiliated.

Server: A PoE, or authorization, is evidence of your authorization to use a program and is required for each machine on which the program or a component of the program is run.

  • Programs are installed onto a storage device that may or may not be part of the server; thus, run is important here as the program may be stored on a CD, SAN, available via SCSI, and so on.
  • The number of partitions or processors on the server is irrelevant.
  • Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.

Licensing: IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA). PoE are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.

The following agreements apply for maintenance.

  • IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011)
  • Addendum for Support (Software Maintenance) for Selected IBM Programs (Z125-6495)

Limited warranty applies: Yes

Warranty: This program has warranty for one year from acquisition from IBM or authorized IBM Business Partner. The warranty provided to the customer, for at least one year from acquisition, is access to databases (read Web sites) for program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or obtain otherwise and install at leisure.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund. For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

Copy and use on home/portable computer: No

Volume orders (IVO): No

Passport Advantage® applies: No

Software Maintenance applies: Yes

All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnosing problems. To take full advantage of IBM Electronic Services on an IBM eServer i5 running AIX 5L 5.2, clients should install Service Agent under AIX 5L 5.2 to assist in reporting AIX operating system related problems.
