Overview

CICS® VSAM Recovery (CICS VR) for z/OS® V4.1 is a member of the CICS Tools family. Its role is to enable the recovery of CICS and batch VSAM data after physical or logical corruption. This new version focuses on automation and backup management. Automation allows users to automate the process of recovering a data set following a backout failure in CICS, while backup management lets users initiate the taking of a backup via the panel interface.

New in CICS VR V4.1

  • Allows automated recovery, with two complementary functions:
    • Automated notification to CICS VR when backout failure is detected in CICS
    • Optional automatic CICS VR recovery for online CICS VSAM data sets
  • Allows invocation of the backup process from the CICS VR panel interface, allowing both sharp and fuzzy backups (when enabled) to be taken
  • Preallocates the target data set before restoring from a backup to support backups by REPRO (a DFSMS dataset copy utility in z/OS) and other backup types where restore does not include dataset allocation
  • Provides authorization management for the panel interface to limit authorization for specific tasks by USERID
  • Provides test-only forward recovery and backout, to enable testing of recovery processes without affecting production data
  • Offers disaster recovery reports, allowing customers to review and validate what is needed at a remote site

Description

CICS VR is a CICS tool that lets you automate the recovery of damaged or lost VSAM data sets (caused by catastrophic hardware failure, software failure, or human error), whether you are using them in a CICS, batch, or combined environment. CICS VR is for organizations where the availability and integrity of VSAM data is vital. CICS VR provides an ISPF panel interface and automates the construction of recovery jobs.

New and enhanced function introduced in CICS VR V4.1

Automated recovery

For automated recovery in CICS VR V4.1, two complementary functions are included:

  • Error detection in CICS causing notification of CICS VR
  • Automatic creation of a recovery job. The recovery job includes steps to take the dataset offline to CICS and to bring it back online to CICS following forward recovery. This allows CICS to retry its backout. Note that this automation is for CICS online processes, not for batch processes.

While the error detection is fully automatic, the user can specify whether the subsequent recovery is fully automatic, without human intervention, or can decide to allow invocation from the panel interface. Even with this panel invocation, there is still automation involved, because CICS VR automates the process of taking the datasets offline and bringing them back online to CICS.

Improved operation to allow easier day-to-day use

  • Users can initiate the taking of a backup. This is provided via the panel interface. The panel lets the user specify whether a sharp or fuzzy backup is required. Backups produced by non-IBM products can be initiated via the panel interface (fuzzy and sharp) by allowing the generated jobstream to be tailored. Such backup jobstreams include a step to notify CICS VR once the backup is complete.
  • Notification support is enhanced so that at the time a backup is notified to CICS VR, then CICS VR extracts information from the Integrated Catalog Facility (ICF) catalog concerning attributes of the dataset. Optionally, at RESTORE time, CICS VR generates a jobstream which includes a step to preallocate the dataset for those backup products that do not preallocate the dataset themselves. This allows support for REPRO backups.
  • Panel authorization management is provided. It is now possible to specify that the user's security profile should be checked before allowing certain information in the CICS VR repository (called the RCDS) to be added/changed or deleted via the panel interface. Security check is activated via a new parameter in the CICS VR address space parmlib member, access to which is restricted.

Forward recovery and backout enhancements

CICS VR V4.1 offers a new command TEST that allows CICS VR to run forward recovery or backout without doing the actual I/O to the VSAM files. Only reports are written. This allows recovery procedures to be tested without affecting production data.

Disaster recovery enhancements

CICS VR V4.1 introduces a Recovery Report feature. This enhancement allows customers to receive a detailed report on what is needed to recover a main or remote site from a disaster or to keep it up-to-date. Options will allow a report across all resources or for an individual sphere.

  • A Recovery report shows when VSAM spheres were used and on which mvslog the records were logged.
  • A backup report is compiled containing information about each registered backup in the RCDS. This can be used to see which backups are available for forward recovery.
  • A copy report is compiled with information about each registered mvslog copy in the RCDS. This enables the user to see which mvslog copies are available for forward recovery.

Additional enhancements

  • Backup and help panel dialog improvements — These change CICS VR so that backups that are flagged as Record Level Sharing (RLS) Recovery required cannot be used for forward recovery. Also provided is a new help item, "Command help," to be listed in every generic help pulldown.
  • Local/GMT switch support for the CICS VR registered backup names list — Enhances the CICS VR dialog for registered backups names list by adding GMT-Local time format switches (PF keys: PF6 — GMT, PF5 — Local) directly to the corresponding secondary window. This allows the customer to view the actual names of the CICS VR registered backups for non-DFSMShsm™ backups with backup times in the desired format. Currently such facility is available on the CICS VR backup list secondary window only.
  • Instance ID dialog enhancement — Enhances the CICS VR dialog to display what filters have been applied to the VSAM Sphere list.
  • Change Accumulation (CA) Autoderegistration Panel support — Improves the CICS VR dialog to allow customers to set and change autoderegister criteria for change accumulation data sets, that is, support separate retention period support for change accumulation data sets.
  • Autoderegister criteria control from the CICS VR main menu — Improves the CICS VR dialog to allow customers to set and change autoderegister criteria for all (log streams, log streams copies, backups, and change accumulation data sets) from one central location.
  • Displaying RLS RR Bit for VSAM Batch logger spheres — Adds the code to display the RLS RR flag on the CICS VR VSAM sphere list panel for VSAM Batch logger spheres. Currently the VSAM sphere list panel displays RLS RR flags only for CICS TS and DFSMStvs (Transactional VSAM) spheres.
  • RCDS Migration Utility Enhancement — Excludes CICS VR server EPDF entries from the RCDS migration to avoid a warning return code.
  • CICS VR Server address space default controls — Allows control of defaults by CICS VR general control strings. It is designed as a set of new service functions to control any defaults by CICS VR general control strings in the CICS VR server address space. The first default supported by the service functions is a security default.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

CICS VR for z/OS V4.1 is capable as of December 9, 2005, when used in accordance with IBM associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Value Unit-based pricing

Value Unit pricing for eligible zSeries® IPLA programs enables a lower cost of incremental growth and enterprise aggregation. Each zSeries IPLA product with Value Unit pricing has a single price per Value Unit and a conversion matrix, called Value Unit Exhibit, for converting from some designated measurement to Value Units. Most commonly Millions of Service Units (MSUs) is the measurement designated by IBM to be converted to Value Units. Some other measurements are engines or messages. Since MSUs are the most common measurement, that measurement will be used for the remainder of this description.

Value Unit pricing offers price benefits for customers. For each zSeries IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the "required license capacity." Each of the various Value Unit Exhibits stipulate that the larger your required license capacity, the fewer Value Units per MSU you will need. Value Unit Exhibits are uniquely identified by a three digit code and referred to using the nomenclature VUExxx, where xxx is the three digit code.

Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offers additional price benefits for customers. The quantity of each zSeries IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as "entitled license capacity." If you wish to grow your entitled license capacity for a zSeries IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired.

For each zSeries IPLA program with Value Unit Pricing, you should:

  • Determine the required license capacity, in MSUs
  • Aggregate the MSUs across the enterprise
  • Convert the total MSUs to Value Units, using the applicable Value Unit Exhibit, and
  • Multiply the price per Value Unit by the total number of Value Units to determine the total cost

To simplify conversion from the designated measurement to VUs or vice-versa, use the Value Unit Converter Tool. For additional information or to obtain a copy of the Value Unit Converter Tool, visit the Value Unit Converter Tool Web site

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

To determine the required license capacity for the zSeries IPLA program you selected, refer to the Terms and conditions section.

IPLA and subscription and support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

All users of CICS TS for z/OS who have their business-critical data stored on VSAM should use CICS VR. In the event of a hardware or software failure that results in loss of data, CICS VR can recover lost VSAM data to the state that existed before the damage was done. It can also recover VSAM data that was updated through batch applications, using the CICS VR VSAM batch logging feature.

With this new release, CICS VR becomes the most functional VSAM recovery tool in the market. IBM has demonstrated its commitment to supporting this area of the zSeries environment with successive releases of CICS VR which have each added significant new function. At the same time, and being a highly functional offering, CICS VR is priced competitively.

Availability of national languages: Messages, panels, and documentation will be translated to Japanese. The product with these translated materials will be available in March 2006.

Technical information

Hardware requirements

CICS VR V4.1 executes on any S/390® or IBM eServer zSeries® processor that supports the required release of z/OS.

There is no change in 24-bit real or virtual storage from the previous release; CICS VR V4.1 requires a minimum of 4 MB of virtual storage below the 16 MB line.

Software requirements

CICS VR V4.1 runs on any supported level of z/OS. At present, this means z/OS V1.4, or later.

CICS VR V4.1 runs with CICS TS for OS/390® V1.3, or CICS TS for z/OS V2.2, V2.3, or V3.1.

PTFs for the following DFSMS dependency APARs are required for CICS VR V4.1:

  • OA04114
  • OA04115
  • OA07549
  • OA07548

For the backout function

  • OA07286
  • OA07287
  • OA07288
  • OA07289
  • OA07290
  • OA07602

For improved serviceability

  • OA12168
  • OA11131

DFSORT™ V1R14 with APAR PQ42845 is required to use change accumulation if any log records are greater than 42,500 bytes.

Compatibility: The CICS VR migration utility has been updated automatically to migrate a Recovery Control Data Set (RCDS) allocated to CICS VR V3.1 or V3.2 or V3.3 to the V4.1 format.

CICS VR V4.1 can coexist with an earlier release of CICS VR. The RCDSs used by the lower level release of CICS VR must be separate from the RCDSs used by CICS VR V4.1.

If you are migrating to CICS VR from another recovery product, you will be installing CICS VR and performing all required setup for the first time. CICS VR does not supply a utility that transfers recovery information stored by the previous recovery product into the CICS VR RCDS. However, by registering the log of logs to CICS VR, then periodically performing a log of logs scan, the CICS VR RCDS will automatically be populated with recovery information such as:

  • Names of updated VSAM spheres
  • Names of log streams that contain the log records
  • Update activity dates and times

If DFSMShsm™ is used to create backups, then the backups are automatically displayed through the CICS VR panel interface because CICS VR dynamically queries DFSMShsm's inventory. If DFSMSdss™ or another product is used to create logical backups, CICS VR can be notified about new backups created for your VSAM data sets. The backup information is stored in the RCDS. Therefore, you should be able to create recovery jobs for VSAM spheres after performing a log of logs scan without migrating recovery information stored from the previous recovery product.

Tier B 130 * .36 = 46.80
Tier C 140 * .27 = 37.80
Tier D 1,185 * .20 = 237.00

Total 1,500 343.50

When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.

                                              5655-M15

Full-capacity mainframes: In cases where full-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply:

Reference-based: The required license capacity of a zSeries IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the "parent" program.

Sub-capacity mainframes: In cases where sub-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply:

Reference-based: The required license capacity of a zSeries IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the "parent" program.

Full Machine-based: The required license capacity of a zSeries IPLA program with full machine-based terms equals the MSU rated capacity of the machine(s) where the zSeries IPLA program executes.

For more information on mainframe MSU rated capacities, refer to The System/370™, System/390®, and zSeries Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901) or visit the "Mainframes" section of the zSeries Exhibits Web site

For more information on sub-capacity zSeries IPLA terms and conditions, refer to Software Announcement 204-184 , dated August 10, 2004.

Additional information for products with reference-based terms: zSeries IPLA sub-capacity programs with reference-based terms adds value to the parent program across the environment, regardless of where in environment the zSeries IPLA program executes.

An environment is defined as either a single/stand-alone machine or a qualified Parallel Sysplex®. Customers may have one or more different environments across their enterprise. To determine the required license capacity for each zSeries IPLA program with referenced-based terms, each environment should be assessed separately.

When a zSeries IPLA sub-capacity program with reference-based terms is used in a qualified Parallel Sysplex environment the required license capacity of the zSeries IPLA program must equal with the license capacity of the parent program across the Parallel Sysplex. Qualified Parallel Sysplex refers to one

  1. That meets the criteria defined in Hardware Announcement 198-001 , dated January 13, 1998
  2. Where MLC pricing is aggregated across the Sysplex

Sub-capacity eligibility: To be eligible for sub-capacity charging on select zSeries IPLA programs, you must first implement and comply with all terms of either sub-capacity Workload License Charges (WLC) or sub-capacity Entry Workload License Charges (EWLC). To implement sub-capacity WLC or EWLC, a machine must be zSeries (or equivalent). On that machine:

  • All instances of the OS/390 operating system must be migrated to the z/OS (or z/OS.e) operating systems
  • Any licenses for the OS/390 operating system must be discontinued
  • All instances of the z/OS operating (or z/OS.e) systems must be running in z/Architecture™ (64-bit) mode

For that machine, you must create and submit a Sub-Capacity Report to IBM each month. Sub-Capacity Reports must be generated using the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT). For additional information or to obtain a copy of SCRT, visit the zSeries Software Pricing Web site

You must comply with all of the terms of the WLC or EWLC offering, whichever is applicable:

  • The complete terms and conditions of sub-capacity WLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement — Attachment for zSeries Workload License Charges (Z125-6516).
  • The complete terms and conditions for sub-capacity EWLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement — Attachment for z800 and z890 Software License Charges (Z125-6587).

Additionally, you must sign and comply with the terms and conditions specified in the amendment to the IPLA contract — Amendment for zSeries Platform Programs Sub-Capacity Pricing (Z125-6929-02, or higher) Once the amendment is signed, the terms in the amendment replace any and all previous zSeries IPLA sub-capacity terms and conditions.

On/Off Capacity on Demand

To be eligible for On/Off Capacity on Demand pricing, customers must be enabled for temporary capacity on the corresponding hardware, and the required contract (Z125-6611), Attachment for Customer Initiated Upgrade and IBM eServer® On/Off Capacity on Demand — Software — must be signed prior to use.
