- Physical direct attach support for 3584 and 3494 Tape Libraries
-
Physical tape export offered in two modes:
- Backup software controlled
- Operator initiated
- Configuration of two TS7510 Virtualization Engines as an active-active cluster.
- Support for real-time compression of data, reducing disk storage requirements.
- On demand allocation of disk storage to help maximize storage utilization using virtual cartridges. Static allocation is also supported for customized environments.
- Support of import/export to a IBM 3494 Tape Library using an Ethernet interface to manage the library.
- Interaction with the TS7510 Cache Controllers to perform transparent failover/failback from path (HBA, port, switch, channel) or storage controller failure to minimize disruption to backup or restore activities.
Completing the TS7510 Virtualization Engine is a software program IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Software V1.1 (5639-CC7), that executes on a TS7510 Virtualization Engine in the TS7510.
Virtualization Engine TS7510 Software V1.1
The TS7510 V1.1 (5639-CC7) has two components:
- The management console program is Java based. It runs as a client on a customer-supplied management console.
- The TS7510 server software runs on the TS7510 Virtualization Engine. With two TS7510s installed, operating in a dual node or HA TS7510 configuration, two copies of the of the TS7510 V1.1 Software are required, one on each TS7510 Virtualization Engine.
Management Console and Capacity Support per Terabyte (#3233) delivers the TS7510 Management Console program and provides entitlement to use the available disk capacity. Feature number 3233 is licensed in 1 TB increments. Approximately three units of 3233 are required for every TS7510 Cache Controller and TS7510 Cache Module allocated to the TS7510 Virtualization Engine applicable to each 5639-CC7 license. The maximum disk capacity that may be allocated to any one TS7510 Virtualization Engine is 23 TB.

| Product positioning |
The TS7510 Virtualization Engine is a high-performance, high-capacity open systems virtual tape product designed to augment the tape backup and restore process in large tape environments. The TS7510 is designed to aid in the tape backup and restore process by helping to provide customers significant operational and throughput efficiencies via tape virtualization, namely:
- Backup window reduction
- Restore time reduction
- Data sharing and resource virtualization facilitation
- Operational efficiencies
- Low total cost of ownership
- Capability to allow multiple disparate backup applications to share the same physical resources
The TS7510 is a tape virtualization solution for open systems attachment over Fibre Channel interfaces. It is designed to help achieve significant operational efficiencies by storing the daily backup in the TS7510 disk cache. As backup data ages, the older data may be migrated to real tape for longer term storage. Since daily backup data is now written to virtual tape via the disk cache, heavy daily tape drive usage can be greatly reduced. Fewer personnel may be needed to administer the backup process when it includes virtual tape.
A TS7510 equipped with one TS7510 Virtualization Engine has four Fibre Channel ports available for host or tape attachment. A TS7510 equipped with two TS7510 Virtualization Engines has eight Fibre Channel ports available for host or tape attachment. With eight Fibre Channel interfaces a TS7510 can connect up to four ports directly to the tape SAN.
The TS7510 differs from many other open systems virtual tape products, by enabling either direct tape attachment or parallel tape attachment. Direct tape attachment is where real tape drives or libraries are physically attached to the TS7510. Parallel tape attachment is where real tape drives or libraries are attached to the host server and data is transferred from the TS7510 through the host server to real tape drives or libraries that are physically attached to the host server.
The TS7510 can help reduce the backup window in many installations. Since robotic movement, tape load/thread, and physical tape search and rewind is eliminated in virtual tape, the effective utilization of the Fibre Channel interfaces is high. That means more tape jobs can be run to virtual tape over a single interface than to real tape. If the backup window is reduced, the time allowed for migration to real tape is increased, thus potentially reducing the number of real tape drives needed for longer term backup data storage.
The TS7510 is designed to improve business continuity by providing better restore times. By having the data in the disk cache, the TS7510 is designed to help decrease restore times. With 512 virtual tape drives, and 64 virtual tape libraries, each backup server can be allocated their own virtual resources, allowing multiple and disparate backup applications to use the same physical resources. This offers the potential for infrastructure simplification. Multiple different tape libraries and tape drives can be aggregated to one or more TS7510s, helping centralize the backup resources and further reduce the operational cost.
The addition of the TS7510 into your tape backup architecture can help
provide significant operational cost reductions, and performance
benefits.

A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) is evidence of Your authorization to use a program and is required for each machine on which the program or a component of the program is run.
- Programs are "installed" onto a storage device which may or may not be part of the Server, thus, "run" is important here as the program may be stored on a CD, Storage Area Network (SAN), available via SCSI and so on.
- The number of partitions or processors on the Server is irrelevant.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate Server.
At least a quantity of one of following one-time charge TS7510 Software V1.1 authorization features must be ordered with each new software order. A no-charge preload feature number 5005 is required on new software orders placed with a corequisite hardware order for an TS7510 Virtualization Engine. Media feature number 5809 does not include the product code.
The appropriate quantity of the Console & Capacity Support Per TB authorization (#3233) should be ordered to support the total storage capacity of the TS7510 configuration. Subsequent capacity increases should be made by ordering the needed additional TB quantity, using this same feature.

The "per server" features of the program may only be installed on an TS7510 Virtualization Engine, or subsequent IBM replacements of the TS7510 Virtualization Engine. These features will be pre-loaded on each new TS7510 Virtualization Engine manufactured.
The Console & Capacity Support feature, #3233, must be installed on a customer supplied management console based workstation. See Technical Information for the minimum requirements of the Console machine. If the Customer wishes to purchase a workstation from IBM, that machine must be included on a different order than the TS7510.
The console program and machine are required to complete the installation of the TS7510. The Customer should insure the console machine is available and ready to install the console program before they plan to activate the TS7510.
Prerequisites/Corequisites
The customer must purchase a separate instance of Program Identifier 5639-CC7 with feature #3229, TS7510 V1.1 Software, for each TS7510 Virtualization Engine they buy.
Other software features must be purchased corresponding to specific features ordered on the TS7510 Virtualization Engine, as shown in the following table:
3954-CV5 5639-CC7

When TS7510 Virtualization Engine (feature #7420), Failover/Failback, is ordered, 5639-CC7 (feature #3234) is required. Failover/Failback can only be ordered if two TS7510 Virtualization Engines are installed in the same 3952 Tape Frame. When two Virtualization Engines are installed in the same 3952 Tape Frame, Failover/Failback is required on both TS7510 Virtualization Engines.
When TS7510 Virtualization Engine (#7421), Network Replication, is ordered, 5639-CC7 (#3231) is required.
When TS7510 Virtualization Engine (#7422), Network Encryption, is ordered, 5639-CC7 (#3232) is required. Network Replication is required when Network Encryption is ordered.
When TS7510 Virtualization Engine (#7423), Network Compression, is ordered, 5639-CC7 (#3230) is required. Network Replication is required when Network Compression is ordered.
Console and Capacity Support (#3233) is purchased on a per terabyte basis. One unit of feature #3233 must be licensed for every useable terabyte, or fraction of a terabyte, installed in the TS7510. Each TS7510 Cache Controller provides 2.5 TB of useable capacity. Therefore, five units of feature #3233 must be licensed for the two required TS7510 Cache Controller units.
Each TS7510 Cache Module provide 3 TB of useable capacity, except for the first two Cache Modules installed in an expansion frame (3952 Tape Frame with feature #7311). These first two expansion Cache Modules provide 2.5 TB useable capacity each. Therefore, three units of feature #3233 must be licensed for the first expansion Cache Module (2.5 TB rounded up to 3 TB), while two more units of feature #3233 must be licensed for the second expansion Cache Module. Every other SX5 installed in either the Base or Expansion frames require three more units of feature #3233 to be licensed.
The maximum usable storage capacity which may be configured to a single TS7510 Virtualization Engine is 23 TB. Eight 3955 Disk Cache units in a single frame provide 23 TB useable capacity. The following table lists the required quantities of feature #3233 to be licensed for each TS7510 hardware configuration:
Number Required 1 TB Aggregate of CV5 Useable units of #3233 required 1 TB nodes SV5s SX5s total TB per 5639-CC7 units of #3233 1 2 0 5 5 5 1 2 1 8 8 8 1 2 2 11 11 11 1 2 3 14 14 14 1 2 4 17 17 17 1 2 5 20 20 20 1 2 6 23 23 23 2 2 0 5 3 6 2 2 1 8 4 8 2 2 2 11 6 12 2 2 3 14 7 14 2 2 4 17 9 18 2 2 5 20 10 20 2 2 6 23 12 24 2 2 7 25.5 13 26 2 2 8 28 14 28 2 2 9 31 16 32 2 2 10 34 17 34 2 2 11 37 19 38 2 2 12 40 20 40 2 2 13 43 22 44 2 2 14 46 23 46
Customers are licensed to use this program only on a single TS7510 Virtualization Engine, and to manage the Cache Controller and Cache Module storage directly attached to that TS7510 Virtualization Engine, and only for the amount of storage capacity on that TS7510 for which they have received proper authorization from IBM. The maximum useable storage capacity which may be configured to a single TS7510 Virtualization Engine is 23 TB. Eight 3955 disk cache units provide 23 TB. Customers must obtain a separate license for any additional TS7510 Virtualization Engine configurations they want to implement and obtain separate authorizations for each such TS7510.
Supplemental information
A customer's right to use the Console and Capacity Support feature of the IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Software V1.1 is limited to the amount of authorizations obtained from IBM. Use of the Failover/Failback feature between two TS7510 Virtualization Engines requires separate authorization for each TS7510 Virtualization Engine. This program is only supported for use with host servers, tape libraries, and tape drives identified by IBM as being supported for attachment to the IBM Virtualization Engine. This program is delivered together with code provided under separate license agreements, including but not limited to open source license agreements.
Software Maintenance
This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.
Software maintenance for one year is included in the initial price for TS7510 V1.1 Software. To provide continuous software maintenance coverage, one-year or three-year software maintenance renewal features should be purchased prior to the expiration of the original software maintenance registration features. Software maintenance renewal for the Console & Capacity Support per TB should be purchased for the total terabyte capacity managed by the TS7510 Virtualization Engine at the time of renewal. Software maintenance renewals supersede and replace the prior maintenance levels.
If software maintenance has expired, the after-license renewal program ID (5639-DD4 for one year and 5639-DD7 for three years) must be ordered, using the current maximum storage TB levels managed by the TS7510 Virtualization Engine on the same basis as previously described.

IBM may release software changes to the IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510. IBM plans to make software changes for the TS7510 series available for download from the IBM TotalStorage® technical support worldwide Web.
Note that not all software changes may be available via the support Web site. If the software does not function as warranted and your problem can be resolved through your application of downloadable software, you are responsible for downloading and installing these designated software changes as IBM specifies. IBM has responsibility for installing changes that IBM does not make available for you to download. If you would prefer, you may request IBM to install downloadable software changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.
