Overview

The IBM WebSphere® Everyplace™ Deployment for Windows™ and Linux™ client software, part of the IBM WebSphere Everyplace Deployment family of products, works in conjunction with the IBM WebSphere Everyplace Deployment server. This client offering provides a run-time environment and integrated middleware components for extending many enterprise applications to server-managed laptop computers and desktop systems. This client-side services-oriented framework can enable applications to run locally while the system is disconnected from the network. When reconnected, it can synchronize data, transactions, and applications. Client management services can be used by network and system administrators to deploy, maintain, update, and even remove software from end-user machines, with minimal end-user intervention. Users have a much better experience because the integrated environment provides richer, more supportive capabilities and faster response times — all of which can contribute to enhanced productivity.

WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux is built on client technology that is intended to address the growing demand for dynamic, powerful applications that can be deployed and managed affordably. This client technology shares code and processing work between clients and middleware servers. Organizations that embrace this technology and its applications can have the flexibility of client-side applications combined with the server-side control. The cost-saving traditionally associated with Web-based computing is enabled by this client technology. Effectively, you will have the best of both worlds.

WebSphere Everyplace Deployment client software provides an environment on your laptop or desktop that allows you to build, run, and store mobile applications locally, without needing a Web connection. Once a connection is available, the data can be automatically synchronized with the back office and transactions can be completed. The process is bi-directional so if there are updates to the application, they can be automatically downloaded from the back office onto the client laptop or desktop. Even though client systems are not always connected, this offering helps provide data security and transactional integrity needed for mission-critical applications.

    • Provides end-user client alternatives and options for integrating and extending existing applications
    • Supports evolving open standards and an open, flexible architecture
    • Supports both Web-based and Eclipse technology-based applications

WebSphere Everyplace Deployment client software provides the following categories of services: interaction/developer, access, and client management.

Interaction/Developer services

For a comprehensive client user environment, WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux utilizes a Rich Client Platform (RCP) user interface which provides an end-user workbench where various applications can plug in. Built on top of Eclipse technology, this workbench provides APIs, such as the Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT) and JFace, which can help enable the creation of new mobile applications. Eclipse is an award-winning, open source platform for the construction of powerful software development tools and rich desktop applications.

This WebSphere Everyplace Deployment client helps enable the capability to tie together multiple sources of information (data, transactions, applications) and keep the information in the context of what the end user is doing at the moment. This can help reduce distractions, help provide focus on the task at hand, and help increase productivity. Users need an interface that is intuitive and in tune with the work they are performing. As information is expedited from where it is created to where it is needed, the requirement also grows for interaction that frees end users from distractions. This has become increasingly important as the industry moves toward the Java programming model. This model allows several forms of input and output, such as native user interface, browser, voice, text, and multimodal, to be utilized simultaneously in the same application. This offering can help enable multiple modes of end-user interaction to assist in the creation of applications that expedite information through business processes.

  • The RCP user interface can provide a desktop workbench into which various applications plug in. This can enable the development team to build combinations of applications that are tailored to the needs of different types of users, such as customer service representatives, mobile sales forces, or executives.
  • Browser-based applications are also possible, utilizing a subset of the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) programming model for application development. Embedded servlets and embedded Java Server Pages (eJSPs) can enable client browsers to render content, without the need of server connectivity.
  • JavaServer Faces-based Web applications are also supported. JavaServer Faces helps you build user interfaces for dynamic Web applications that run on the server. The JavaServer Faces framework manages user interface states across server requests and offers a simple model for the development of server-side events that are activated by the client.

Access services

Mobile employees, customers, and suppliers want access to information wherever they are located, regardless if they are connected to the network or not. Instant access to enterprise data, transactions, and applications can help accelerate business processes. WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux preserves the WebSphere programming model and uses well established industry-standard APIs and middleware to help extend business processes across wire line, wireless, and cellular networks. The offering provides the infrastructure for storing information and for executing applications on client laptops or desktop systems, without the need for continuous server connectivity. By running application logic locally, without need for connectivity, the network lag can be minimized and application responsiveness to the user can be enhanced. When a connection to the server is available, this client offering can then synchronize the data, transactions, or applications.

Access services include:

  • Java services that are enabled through the integration of a J2SE Java Compatible run-time environment. Applications can now run locally, which helps avoid network latency and can provide faster response.
  • Web services support that can enable content that is hosted throughout the network (news, weather, sports, finance, and others), to be easily accessed from the client. By integrating a Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) client into the platform, the same server APIs such as SOAP, Universal Description Discovery and Integration (UDDI), and Web Services Description Language (WSDL), can also be used to help extend business integration systems to mobile laptops and intermittently connected desktop clients.
  • Relational database access that delivers the capability for devices to store data locally onto the device for later synchronization with the server. This can enable data to be stored locally when the client is disconnected from the network; then when connectivity is achieved, information can be forwarded appropriately to the server. Even if a device loses power or a connection is lost, the data stored locally is not lost. The WebSphere Everyplace Deployment client offering includes DB2e and Cloudscape as local relational databases.
  • Assured messaging that can enable devices to queue messages on the device and then forward them onto the server when a connection becomes available. This function can enable financial transactions and workflow applications. The offering includes MQe as a messaging client to enable this functionality.

By using the same APIs that are used widely within the industry today, the WebSphere Everyplace Deployment client offering preserves the WebSphere and Eclipse programming models and can enable developers to build, test, and deploy applications based on their currently available skill sets. This can reduce risk while simultaneously speeding the time to market for new and innovative applications that can help improve end-user productivity.

Client management services

Some devices can last for years, but most software is continually updated. Client management services provides the ability to remotely install, update, maintain, and remove applications or middleware on end-user devices. This can enable system administrators to push applications from the server out to the devices. The APIs that assist developers in the creation, testing, and deployment of server-managed software to intermittently connected devices include:

  • Platform management extensions can enable software bundles to be installed, updated, maintained, and withdrawn from client devices. This service is enabled by integration of the Eclipse Install/Update Manager based on OSGi. This technology can provide for the network delivery and management of applications and services.
  • Systems management extensions can enable system administrators to monitor and control the loads of software on specific devices. Network administrators can customize software loads for individuals or groups of individuals, such as a sales force. This service is provided by the Tivoli® Device Management Agent which is integrated into WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux. The Tivoli Device Management Agent is driven by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Device Management (DM) open standards.

WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux includes the following middleware components integrated to work together at optimal levels:

  • DB2 Everyplace (DB2e)
  • WebSphere Message Queue Everyplace (MQe)
  • Cloudscape
  • ICU4J

WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux has been successfully tested with the WebSphere Everyplace Deployment server. For more information, refer to the IBM WebSphere Everyplace Deployment V6, Software Announcement 205-244 dated October 4, 2005.
