| Overview |
IBM's WebSphere® Everyplace offerings combine and integrate the entire IBM middleware infrastructure needed to help connect, adapt, manage, transform, and scale today's Web applications and legacy data into tomorrow's pervasive applications. The WebSphere Everyplace offerings are now expanded by the IBM WebSphere Everyplace Deployment family of products.
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment V6.0, an end-to-end platform, extends service-orientated architecture (SOA) out to the edge of the network onto desktops, laptops, mobile, and embedded devices. WebSphere Everyplace Deployment provides a family of server-managed client platforms, the tooling, and the corresponding server-side components required to build, deploy, and maintain sophisticated solutions that can adapt to device and network conditions. Solutions built using this platform can support connected or intermittently connected environments.
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment solutions can support scenarios in which a user needs to process and act upon information, then expedite that information from where it is created to where it is needed. All this is done while maintaining transactional integrity and data security.
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment is available in an Enterprise Edition or in a Starter Edition. The Starter Edition helps reduce the barrier of entry for customers by providing the full function of the WebSphere Everyplace Deployment program with a usage restriction of 50 users. This can enable small deployments, pilots, and proof-of-concept installations, and is available for a smaller investment than the fully enabled processor-licensed Enterprise Edition.

| Description |
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment, in conjunction with its prerequisite products, offers the products and components you need to help build, deploy, and maintain solutions that can extend many existing enterprise information systems and applications to devices in connected or intermittently connected environments. WebSphere Everyplace Deployment enables SOA-based solutions.
The WebSphere Everyplace Deployment platform is used to develop "fit for purpose" solutions, which means that the platform can:
- Provide the right services required to enable a scenario
-
Support a suitable deployment topology
Elements of a deployment topology can include security (device-side, server-to-device, and server-side), management of applications on a device, and connectivity (connected, intermittently connected).
-
Offer the desired user experience based upon the usage scenario
For example, sales force, field service personnel, knowledge workers, and executives each have very different usage patterns and requirements.
- Can adapt to the form factor of the device
Key features
-
Expedited delivery of messages through asynchronous messaging
WebSphere MQ Everyplace, Network Edition V2.0.1.8 is one of the components in WebSphere Everyplace Deployment. MQ Everyplace provides industry-strength messaging optimized for the mobile environment with intermittent network connectivity. MQ Everyplace offers the following features:
- Asynchronous and synchronous messaging
- Customizable for a wide range of environments
- Optimized communication over wireless networks
- Automatic channel management
- Object messaging (data and function)
- Once-only assured delivery of messages
- Built-in comprehensive security features including authentication, encryption, non-repudiation, and compression
-
Support for SOA applications through the ability to consume and publish
Web services
Web services Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) support helps enable access to applications across a wide variety of wireless and wire-line networks. WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Linux and Windows, the client program included with WebSphere Everyplace Deployment, provides tools that help developers create applications that consume and publish Web services.
-
Relational data synchronization to support solutions that store and
manipulate data in a local relational data store
DB2® Everyplace V8.2.1, a component of WebSphere Everyplace Deployment, allows for encrypted bi-directional data transfer between mobile devices and back-end enterprise databases, and for remote queries. The WebSphere Everyplace Deployment for Windows and Linux client incorporates DB2 Everyplace V8.2.1, which is a small-footprint, multiplatform, powerful relational database that is easy to use in application development.
-
Installation and maintenance of software on the device through device
management service
Tivoli® Device Manager V1.8, a component of WebSphere Everyplace Deployment, is used to identify devices and perform many tasks for managing devices, such as configuration, inventory collection, distribution of software, and initial provisioning. Device Manager is used with a subscription manager component to control access to the user interfaces for administrators and device users.
The Device Manager server works as the engine for processing jobs on devices. It uses the DB2 database as the repository for device-related data. A supplied administrator interface, the Device Manager console, manages devices by submitting various types of jobs to run on the devices.
-
Integrated installation and configuration
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment uses an integrated installation with a GUI-based configuration wizard that prompts for minimum configuration information to configure all of the included server-side components. The WebSphere Everyplace Deployment installation program does not install the prerequisite software (DB2 UDB, IBM HTTP Server, and WebSphere Application Server). It does provide a robust prerequisite checker to help ensure that the appropriate software is installed before the WebSphere Everyplace Deployment installation is started.
-
Integrated user management
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment provides a common user registry. This user and group management interface helps reduce the overhead of maintaining separate client user ids. The default WebSphere Everyplace Deployment installation will use DB2 as the user repository. A configuration utility is provided to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory. The configuration utility does not migrate user data from DB2 to Active Directory. Bulk load of users and groups is not supported in this release.
-
Clients

Charge metrics definitions
Processor
In full capacity charging, PoEs must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the Program or a component of the Program is run.
- If there are Program Components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information.
- IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
- Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
- In the zSeries® Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor".
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the Program is run.
Per 50 users
Licensing per 50 users applies to WebSphere Everyplace Deployment Starter Edition. This means that one license for the Starter Edition entitles up to 50 users to utilize the WebSphere Everyplace Deployment server. There is one charge for each 50-user license. The Starter Edition allows customers to begin using WebSphere Everyplace Deployment V6.0 on a smaller scale and for a lower price than the per processor licensing and pricing of WebSphere Everyplace Deployment Enterprise Edition.
