IBM System Storage Archive Manager provides a client/server policy-based managed storage system to
help meet regulatory and archive requirements for data retention and expiration. Archive and
retrieval of retention managed data is through System Storage Archive Manager client or the API
client. The storage management services of System Storage Archive Manager server fall into three
functional areas:
-
Access control
-
Data protection
-
Transparent data movement
Access control
IBM System Storage Archive Manager is designed to prevent modification to archived data,
thereby helping to preserve the data as fixed and unalterable. IBM System Storage Archive Manager
can prevent deletion of the data by unauthorized agents (people or applications) prior to the
expiration of the data's specified retention policy.
Data protection
IBM System storage Archive Manager can provide off-site protection of non-alterable copies of
data. This includes archived copies stored at a physically separate facility, which may be required
by government regulations. Storing copies at a separate facility can be accomplished by creating
archives on-site and physically transporting and tracking the media, or by using remote distance
storage attachments to perform the backup directly to the physically separate site. Multiple copies
of the data can be created and managed using the IBM System Storage Archive Manager server to
automate both on-site and off-site storage and management of data. A copy of data, that is
accessible to the System Storage Archive Manager server, is transparently retrieved in the event the
primary copy is unavailable.
Transparent data movement
IBM System Storage Archive Manager includes automated and administrator controlled movement of
data across storage devices, both single tier and multiple tiers. The transparent data movement
functions can help with the storage migration of data which has retention requirements which exceed
the lifetime of the storage device or media. The data can be retrieved by the file archive client
or API client independently from the physical location or storage device where the archive data
resides.
IBM System Storage Archive Manager supports an extensive number of devices and device types for
storage of data. Unlike other solutions that utilize a single hardware device, IBM System Storage
Archive Manager allows the user to choose the device and media most appropriate to the business, and
migrate the data throughout a storage hierarchy based on policy. To help meet regulatory agencies'
requirements for data that must be stored on media that cannot be altered, the storage hierarchy
includes support for WORM Tape and WORM Optical Disk. IBM System Storage Archive Manager provides
archive retention management services in two key areas:
-
Archive Retention Protection
-
Expiration/Deletion Suspension
Archive Retention Protection
IBM System Storage Archive Manager is designed to prevent the modification of data and the
deletion of that data by unauthorized agents (individual or program). IBM System Storage Archive
Manager helps prevent the deletion by any agent prior to the expiration of the retention period.
This helps ensure that neither individuals nor programs can maliciously or accidentally delete data
prior to the specified retention criteria.
Expiration/Deletion Suspension (Deletion Hold)
This provides the ability to suspend deletion of data in response to a pending or ongoing
action, like legal litigation, that requires that particular data be held. Upon determination that
the suspension is no longer required, normal expiration timing resumes per the original retention
period.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
For software offerings:
The IBM System Storage Archive Manager has been reviewed for Accessibility Readiness, and an IBM
accessibility checklist has been completed.

Security, auditability, and control
IBM System Storage Archive Manager uses the security and audit features of the operating system
software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security
features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and
communication facilities.
IBM Tivoli software products are priced using a managed-environment approach whereby price is
determined by the amount of storage capacity under management rather than the number and type of
product components installed.
This licensing model can provide the customer flexibility to deploy these software products within
its environment in a manner that can address and respond to the customer's evolving architecture.
That is, as the architecture of a customer's environment changes, the customer's implementation of
these products can be altered, as needed, without affecting the customer's license requirements (as
long as the customer does not exceed its entitlements to the software).
IBM Tivoli Enhanced Value-Based Pricing terminology definitions
Capacity
Primary disk storage pool size combined with the amount of utilized primary removable media
storage used by the IBM System Storage Archive Manager server.
Capacity notes:
-
Capacity does not include:
-
Copy storage pools for the Archive Manager data that reside on disk.
-
Copy storage pools for the Archive Manager data that reside on removable media.
-
Space used on the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server for any purpose other than the primary storage
pool.
-
A virtual tape library (VTL) is considered a removable media device and thus capacity is based on
utilization.
-
The minimum amount of capacity that can be purchased is 1 TB.
-
Partial capacity will be rounded up to the next whole number of TB.
-
Additional capacity must be added in increments of 1 TB.
Terabyte (T/TB)
= 2 raised to the power of 40 bytes = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

Passport Advantage
Through the Passport Advantage Agreement, customers may receive discounted pricing based on their
total volume of eligible products, across all IBM brands, acquired worldwide. The volume is
measured by determining the total "Passport Advantage points value" of the applicable acquisitions.
Passport Advantage points are only used for calculating the entitled Passport Advantage discount.
To determine the required Tivoli product configuration under Passport Advantage, the Tivoli Enhanced
Value-Based Pricing Model applies. The customer's environment is evaluated on a per-product
basis.
Use the following two-step process to determine the total "Passport Advantage points value":
-
Analyze the customer environment to determine the number of charge units for a product. The
quantity of each product's part numbers to be ordered is determine by that analysis.
-
Order the Passport Advantage part numbers. A Passport Advantage point value, which is the same
worldwide for a specific part number regardless of where the order is placed, is assigned to each
Tivoli product part number. The Passport Advantage point value for the applicable part number
multiplied by the quantity for that part number will determine the Passport Advantage points for
that Tivoli product part number. The sum of these Passport Advantage points determines the
"Passport Advantage point value" of the applicable Tivoli product authorizations which then may be
aggregated with the point value of other applicable Passport Advantage product acquisitions to
determine the total "Passport Advantage points value."
The discounted pricing, available through Passport Advantage, is expressed in the form of Suggested
Volume Prices (SVPs), which vary depending on the SVP level. Each SVP level is assigned a minimum
total Passport Advantage point value, which must be achieved, in order to qualify for that SVP
level.
Media packs and documentation packs do not carry Passport Advantage points and are not eligible for
SVP discounting.
For additional information on Passport Advantage, refer to the following Web site
The following Passport Advantage part number categories may be orderable:
-
License and Software Maintenance 12 Months this is the product
authorization with maintenance to the first anniversary date.
-
Annual Software Maintenance Renewal this is the maintenance renewal

Pricing examples
Purchase scenario 1:
A customer has an IBM System Storage Archive Manager server with a 5 TB primary disk
storage pool and a removable media storage pool that will store 4 TB of data within the next 12
months. The data in the primary storage pools will be copied for off-site protection to a copy
pool. The customer has designated 10 TB of removable media for a copy storage pool.
The customer needs to purchase 9 TB of IBM System Storage Archive Manager.

Migration examples:
Customers who purchased IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention were charged a flat
per processor fee. That original purchase was not bound to any amount of capacity. If the customer
wants to add an additional processor to their existing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention
server, they will need to do so under the new pricing model. If the customer wants to add a new IBM
System Storage Archive Manager server, this would be done as a new purchase following the examples
above and no migration would be necessary.
For migration purposes, customers will be granted 16 TB of IBM System Storage Archive Manager for
each processor they purchased of Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention.
Migration example 1:
A customer originally purchased one processor of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Data
Retention. The amount of capacity on the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention server is 12
TB. As part of the migration, the customer would be granted the entitlement to manage 16 TB of IBM
System Storage Archive Manager. In this example, the customer could manage an additional 4 TB
without purchasing any additional licenses.
