The IBM WebFacing Tool advanced features

When you create a new Web interface to a 5250 application using the IBM WebFacing Tool, the interface looks like a green-screen interface running in a browser. The application chrome and colors are much more attractive than a green screen but the interface behavior is select-and-enter versus point-and-click. You do not gain the ease-of-learning and ease-of-use characteristics of a Web GUI until you customize the Web-enabled application. The basic tools in WebSphere Development Studio Client can be used for most of these customizations. However, the functions of this new Web application are constrained by the capabilities of the original green-screen application.

The wizard in the advanced IBM WebFacing Tool generates a Struts-compliant Web application that can be leveraged and extended with other Struts-compliant Web applications. This substantially increases the potential of a Web-enabled application. The Struts interface makes it easy to extend the capabilities of the Web-enabled application. The command-key-override in WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition allows developers to integrate new capabilities into the Web-enabled interface. The developer selects an available command key and links a Struts action or a new Struts-based Web application via the associated Web address. By pressing the command key, a push button in the browser interface, a call is made to the Web address that kicks off the new action or Struts-based application.

A service for displaying and printing spool files is included in WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition. This is just one example of the many services or extensions that can be created for the Web interface created by the IBM WebFacing Tool.

The lack of support for iSeries system screens was a significant challenge to many organizations who wanted to Web-enable their solutions using the IBM WebFacing Tool. Most system screens are defined using UIM. Therefore, most system screens could not be converted using the IBM WebFacing Tool.

Previously, the system screens had to be Web-enabled using a 5250 data stream conversion tool and required interactive workload. The resulting Web-enabled application could not run entirely in batch mode; instead it required an Enterprise Server. IBM has added a 5250 datastream conversion engine to the IBM WebFacing Tool to handle UIM-based iSeries system screens (and other UIM screens) and allow the Web-enabled application to run in batch mode. This capability enables developers to Web-enable their entire solutions, including system screens, and run them in batch mode on i5/OS Standard Edition.

In addition, the IBM WebFacing Tool has added advanced functions to generate Struts-based portlet applications and provide single sign-on support using IBM EIM. Struts actions can be added to enhance the generated applications. These applications can be deployed to a WebSphere Portal Server and added to the portal pages served by the server.

In a fixpack update, IBM WebFacing Tool will provide Cascading Style Sheets-Positioning support to deliver pixel-based repositioning of 5250 fields on the Web-enabled interface. The Web Settings function in the IBM WebFacing Tool is enhanced to associate a new pair of row, column coordinates to a 5250 field. This enhancement allows 5250 fields to be repositioned on the Web page, unconstrained by the boundaries of the original 5250 area.

Enterprise Generation Language (EGL)

A fourth-generation development tool, EGL is included. EGL:

  • Allows developers to rapidly generate both Java applications and iSeries green-screen applications
  • Is the follow-on product to VisualAge Generator
  • Generates Java code in Developer Studio Client
  • Generates iSeries COBOL code in WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition

Remote System Explorer (RSE) extensions

RSE has added extensions in WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition to support the development of Linux and AIX applications. Developers using the IDE in the advanced edition can now develop Linux and AIX applications using Java and C/C++. These RSE extensions expand the support for working with applications in other eServer i5 operating systems besides i5/OS.

Product Positioning with Rational Software:

WebSphere Development Studio Client is a superset of Rational Web Developer, adding function pertinent to iSeries developers (as described above). Similarly, WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition is a superset of Rational Application Developer. Both products are integral elements of the Rational Software Development Platform, which means that they will integrate with any other product based on the Rational Software Development Platform to produce a single IDE with aggregated functionality. Thus, the functionality of WebSphere Development Studio Client and WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition can be extended through the installation of other Rational products, such as:

  • IBM Rational Software Modeler (for code-independent modeling)
  • IBM Rational Software Architect (for architecting and modeling Java and C++ code; a superset of Rational Application Developer and Rational Software Modeler)
  • IBM Rational Functional Tester (for automated testing of Web and Java applications)

WebSphere Host Access Transformation Services (HATS) Toolkit

  • You can use the HATS Toolkit to create a Web application in which host screens are transformed into Web pages. HATS Toolkit plugs into the IBM Rational Software Development Platform and appears as a perspective in WebSphere Development Studio Client and WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition.
  • The copy of HATS Toolkit included with the offering is for development use only.
    • If you receive the HATS Toolkit, by ordering the iSeries program, WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries (5722-WDS), you may install HATS Toolkit for developing HATS applications for iSeries onto an unlimited number of development workstations that are connected to the server to which the WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries program is licensed, without paying additional license fees.
    • For HATS application deployment, user-based licenses must be independently acquired. Refer to the HATS announcement for more information on acquiring HATS licenses.

Reference for the HATS V6.0 offering to run applications created with the HATS Toolkit

  • Only HATS Toolkit is included in this offering. You can acquire HATS runtime separately if you wish to deploy the Web interface to production.
  • HATS transforms the screens of a host application into Web pages that are part of a WebSphere application running on a Web server. End users access the pages from their Web browsers and use the pages to send and receive data from the host application.
  • HATS has two components:
    • HATS Toolkit, running on a client. The HATS Toolkit is shipped in WebSphere Development Studio Client and WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition.
    • The HATS run-time code, running inside one or more HATS applications deployed on WebSphere Application Server. It sends data back and forth between the user and an application on the host. End users interact with the HATS application through their Web browsers.
  • Key enhancements in HATS V6.0:
    • Easier-to-use drag and drop screen customization
    • New wizards to customize HATS components and widgets
    • Enhanced macro support with macro stepping feature
    • Side-by-side preview of host screens and HATS customizations
    • JavaServer Faces support Integration Objects for easier Web page design
    • Improved 5250 subfile recognition, rendering, and customization

Portal Toolkit (Advanced Edition only)

The IBM Portal Toolkit is now fully integrated into Rational Application Developer, which helps you to create, edit and test portals and portlets just as you would any other type of programming artifact. You can use the portal tools in combination with JSF and Struts elements, EJBs and even Web services. Rational Application Developer supports development of projects targeted to WebSphere Portal Server 5.1.

With Rational Application Developer, you can:

  • Generate portlets with wizards — As with other types of applications, you create a new portlet using wizards, which generate a portlet project structure that conforms to J2EE standards and create a complete portlet. Rational Application Developer also automates the creation of the portal deployment descriptors and EAR files. The wizards create two main types of portlets:
    • Those that comply with the JSR 168 architecture, a Java specification from the Java Community Process that addresses the requirements of aggregation, personalization, presentation and security for portlets running in a portal environment
    • Those that comply with the IBM Portlet API, which extends the basic features of JSR 168.
  • Create portlets visually — You can lay out the interface for portlets using a graphical Page Designer utility and create portlets using the Struts framework and the Web Diagram Editor to visualize the structure. In addition, you can use JavaServer Faces UI components to visually develop highly interactive portlets. One of the biggest time savers in the IBM Portlet API is its brokered approach to inter-portlet communication. The Click-to-action approach to messaging speeds up development of portal applications, because portlets do not need to be aware of each other to send information back and forth. Rational Application Developer provides a drag-and-drop component for implementing Click-to-action without programming and it uses an icon to visually indicate portlets with Click-to-action enabled.
  • Create portals visually — A new Portal Designer utility lets you lay out a Portal interface visually without writing any code. You select a visual design for the Portal (controlled by themes and skins), import the portlets to be used on the page and then drag-and-drop them on the portal page. A special palette of portal controls and a Thumbnails view of themes and skins make it easy to control the page design. Rational Application Developer ships with several predefined themes and skins that allow developers to quickly create a new portal.

Enterprise Generation language (EGL)

EGL is a high-level procedural language (familiar to SQL, COBOL, RPG, Informix™ 4GL developers) that allows developers to build J2EE applications without having to know Java or object-oriented programming concepts. With EGL, in addition to the generation of Java code included in WebSphere Development Studio Client, iSeries ILE COBOL code can be generated in WebSphere Development Studio Client Advanced Edition.

New enhancements in EGL:

  • EGL Language now provides a more powerful and productive programming environment. Some enhancements include date and time functions, new data types (string, large object, and floating point), data initializers, and many new built-in functions.
  • EBCDIC Debug now allows iSeries developers to debug their EGL applications with data kept internally in EBCDIC encoding, and to access remote databases without converting the data.
  • A new EGL Form Editor to provide a full-function graphical editor for creating 5250 screen layouts for use in EGL applications.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
