Overview

Are you looking for better, faster ways to get critical business information to your employees, suppliers, partners, and customers? Do you need to drive efficiency into your output management system by distributing more output electronically in nonprint formats rather than printing? Are you finding that business process transformation — becoming an On Demand Business — requires merging applications that were once separately owned and managed into an integrated business workflow? IBM Infoprint® Transforms for z/OS® can help you solve these issues and more by providing data stream transforms that let you send output from PCs, UNIX® servers, and mainframes to the most appropriate, cost-effective printer for the job. Or you can transform Advanced Function Presentation™ (AFP™) production application output into PDF for delivery as e-mail or on Web sites and portals. And you can merge applications that produce different data formats by converting them into one common format.

Flexible printing options

The trend toward increased personalization and customized presentation of customer documents has resulted in the availability of a wide range of sophisticated document composition tools. Many of these produce standard PostScript or PDF formats, yet you need to print them on reliable, high-speed AFP production printers. Using Infoprint Transforms to AFP, documents in PCL, PostScript, PDF, and SAP/R3 formats can be converted into AFP for production print. Conversely, using Infoprint Transform for AFP to HP PCL and Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PostScript, AFP applications that were once printed and distributed can now be converted into PCL or PostScript and sent to LAN-attached printers in any department.

Enablement of electronic delivery of output

Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PDF lets you convert AFP output into PDF for delivery as e-mail, or for publishing on a Web site or portal. New capabilities in this offering make electronic delivery even more effective by enabling conversion of AFP index (TLE) commands to PDF bookmarks for easy navigation within documents, and by conversion of AFP linking commands (LLE) into links within the PDF document to external sources, such as an Internet address.

Secure information delivery

New privacy of information legislation and concerns over the protection of sensitive client information have created an increased focus on security. With Infoprint Transform for AFP to PDF, AFP output can now be encrypted while it is being converted to PDF for secure electronic delivery.

Description

What new products are being announced?

IBM is replacing the Infoprint Server Transforms for z/OS product with five separately orderable offerings. These products offer:

  • Improved image quality in PostScript and PDF to AFP converted output
  • Improved font support and Latin2 language support in PCL to AFP
  • Support for later levels of the data streams converted to AFP
  • New function in the AFP to PDF transform
  • Support for additional AFP capabilities in all transforms from AFP
  • Separate availability of the Coaxial Printer Support function with additional support

Infoprint Transforms to AFP V2.1 for z/OS

Transforms that are included in this offering are:

  • PCL to AFP (supports PCL6)
  • PostScript to AFP (supports PostScript Level 3 and earlier, and produces monochrome output)
  • PDF to AFP (supports PDF 1.4 and earlier, and produces monochrome output)
  • SAP/R3 to AFP

Infoprint Transform for AFP to HP PCL V2.1 for z/OS transforms AFP to PCL5, PCL5c, and PCL5e (result is PCL text and image).

Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PDF V2.1 for z/OS transforms AFP to PDF 1.4 and has been significantly enhanced to include new capabilities that support richer PDF content, and the ability to encrypt the document while converting to prevent unauthorized use of the PDF document. AFP documents containing indexing, page grouping, and hyperlink commands will be converted into PDF documents with bookmarks for easier navigation using the Acrobat reader.

Documents can also be enhanced to provide richer content and flexible access to related information. The AFP linking command (LLE) can also be used to refer to objects external to the AFP document. The AFP to PDF transform will now process these links to include the external reference in the resulting PDF document. This capability can be used, for example, to include an Internet address in the PDF document.

Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PostScript V2.1 for z/OS transforms AFP to PostScript Level 3.

In addition to enhanced PDF output, all of the transforms now support many AFP capabilities not supported by the existing Infoprint Server Transforms for z/OS product. New AFP functions now supported include:

  • Enhanced n-up formatting
  • Record formatting page definitions
  • XML page definitions
  • PDF and GIF in object containers
  • Additional bar code symbologies, including 2D bar codes

The new transforms also provide a way for customers to configure paper sizes in the transforms. This function is provided as a USERMOD.

Infoprint Coaxial Printer Support V2.1 for z/OS

The new Infoprint Coaxial Printer Support offering replaces the corresponding feature in the existing Infoprint Server Transforms for z/OS offering. It supports printing in IP PrintWay™ basic mode and IP PrintWay™ extended mode, which was introduced in Infoprint Server V1.5 for z/OS. In addition, multiple copies are now supported in IP PrintWay extended mode when printing on coaxial printers.

Product positioning

These new offerings are functional replacements for the existing Infoprint Server Transforms for z/OS, which contained as separate features all of the functions now available separately in the new offerings.

Like the predecessor product, these products are tightly integrated with IBM's strategic distributed printing and output management infrastructure, Infoprint Server, which is an optional feature of z/OS. This integration allows the transforms to be invoked in a variety of ways — using the batch program AOPBATCH, or automatically through configuration in Infoprint Server printer definitions.

IBM announced a Statement of Direction in Software Announcement 204-279 , dated November 30, 2004, for IBM Infoprint Transform Manager for Linux™ (5639-P51) to connect to Infoprint Server for z/OS. Infoprint Transform Manager offers image and data transforms on an Intel™ Linux platform and is designed specifically for production applications with a requirement to convert very large or complex PDF files. When the ability to connect Infoprint Transform Manager for Linux to Infoprint Server for z/OS is available, Infoprint Transform Manager may be preferred to the PDF transform program in Infoprint Transforms to AFP in cases where speed of conversion is important or it is desirable to offload transform CPU utilization to a server platform. For additional information, refer to

Other vendors provide data stream transforms from AFP to other formats. IBM's Infoprint Transforms to AFP is unique in helping customers move applications that generate PCL, PostScript, or PDF onto IBM's reliable, high-speed AFP printers driven by Print Services Facility™ for z/OS (PSF), Infoprint Manager for AIX®, or Infoprint Manager for Windows™.

Technical information

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

The four IBM Infoprint® Transforms V2.1 for z/OS® products and IBM Infoprint Coaxial Printer Support V2.1 for z/OS can be installed on IBM eServer zSeries® processors including z900, z990, z800, or equivalents.

Output transformed to AFP™ can be printed on printers that support the IPDS™ data stream and compressed IOCA image, or viewed using the AFP Viewer plug-in available as a no-charge download from the IBM Printing Systems Web site at

Output transformed from AFP into PCL can be printed on printers that support PCL5, PCL5c, or PCL5e. Output transformed from AFP into PostScript can be printed on printers that support PostScript Level 2 or 3. PDF output is PDF 1.4. PDF can be viewed using the Adobe Acrobat Viewer.

Infoprint Coaxial Printer Support supports printing to SNA printers that are coaxially attached.

Software requirements

IBM Infoprint Transforms for z/OS and IBM Infoprint Coaxial Printer Support for z/OS run with z/OS V1.4 or higher. They require the Infoprint Server feature of z/OS as a prerequisite.

Secure PDF support requires the IBM z/OS Open Cryptographic Services Facility (OCSF) feature of z/OS with the Security Level 3 optional feature. Refer to z/OS Open Cryptographic Services Facility Application Developer's Guide and Reference (SC24-5875), Chapter 1, "Configuring and Getting Started" for more details. The use of 128-bit encryption is export-controlled by the U.S. Government.

Compatibility: The IBM Infoprint Transforms to AFP V2.1 for z/OS may produce output different from that of the previous version for some documents. The most likely difference is in font substitution that is performed when the requested PostScript or PDF font is not available to the PostScript or PDF to AFP transforms. Mission-critical business documents that require absolute font fidelity should be tested with the V2.1 product before being placed into production.

The PostScript to AFP and PDF to AFP transforms in Infoprint Transforms to AFP V2.1 do not support printing in languages that use double-byte character set (DBCS) fonts. The PCL to AFP transform supports conversion of documents using DBCS fonts when the fonts are included inline with the document. The SAP to AFP transform supports the following codepages:

  • 0120 EBCDIC ISO-1 (Latin 1)
  • 1100 ASCII ISO8859-1 (Latin 1)
  • 4001 OCR-A (ASCII)
  • 4004 OCR-B (ASCII)
  • 8000 Japanese ISO Shift-JIS
  • 8300 Chinese (traditional) ISO Big5
  • 8400 Chinese (simplified) ISO GB2312
  • 8500 Korean ISO KSC 5601
  • 8600 Thai ISO TIS620-2529

Infoprint Transform for AFP to HP PCL, Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PDF, Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PostScript, and the Infoprint Coaxial Printer Support products are compatible with their V1 equivalents.

Migration considerations: When installing Infoprint Transforms V2.1 to AFP, all of the transforms in that product will replace the corresponding transforms in Infoprint Server Transforms Version 1. When installing any of the following:

  • Infoprint Transform for AFP to PCL V2.1
  • Infoprint Transform for AFP to PDF V2.1
  • Infoprint Transform for AFP to PostScript V2.1

the other transforms from AFP must also be upgraded to their Version 2 counterparts or they will be deleted.

Limitations

  • The Infoprint Transforms from PostScript to AFP V2.1 and from PDF to AFP V2.1 do not support double-byte character set (DBCS) fonts.
  • The Infoprint Transforms from HP PCL to AFP V2.1 do not include DBCS fonts.
  • The Infoprint Transforms to AFP have a slightly different set of fonts in the PostScript, PCL, and PDF to AFP transforms as compared to the predecessor product.
  • Infoprint Transform for AFP to HP PCL V2.1, Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PDF V2.1, and Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PostScript V2.1 do not support Unicode or DBCS print files that refer to outline fonts.
  • Infoprint Transform for AFP to HP PCL V2.1, Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PDF V2.1, and Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PostScript V2.1 do not support AFP print files that reference TrueType or OpenType fonts.
  • Infoprint Transform for AFP to HP PCL V2.1, Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PDF V2.1, and Infoprint Transform for AFP to Adobe PostScript V2.1 do not use printer-resident fonts.
  • The PCL to AFP transform supports PCL6.
  • The PostScript to AFP transform supports PostScript Level 3 and earlier, and produces monochrome output.
  • The PDF to AFP transform supports PDF 1.4 and earlier, and produces monochrome output.
  • The SAP/R3 to AFP transform supports SAP R3 SAPGOF Release 4.6C and produces monochrome output.
  • Other limitations might apply to the input data streams. For information about these limitations, refer to the following publications:
    • Infoprint Transforms to AFP for z/OS (G550-0443)
    • Infoprint Transforms from AFP for z/OS (G550-0444)

Performance considerations: Transforming print jobs from the data stream in which they were created to another data stream will use more system resources than printing the same job to a printer that supports the native data stream. The print file resulting from the transforms may be larger than the original input print file. The impact on system and network resources will vary depending upon the print volume, the print data streams processed, and the current utilization of the system and network resources.

Transform execution speed varies with the datastream type, job length, output resolution, screening algorithms (for image), and the density and complexity of the pages in the print file. In particular, PostScript and PDF transforms vary greatly in complexity, and transform speed may vary significantly for similar, but different jobs. The increased functionality in the Transforms to AFP may result in decreased execution speed.

Customer requirements: This announcement satisfies or partially satisfies five customer requirements in the Fully Integrated Toolset (FITS) database. Requirements satisfied include:

  • MR0318057225: AFP to PDF transform support for hyperlinks
  • MR0513024135: PDF to AFP transform support for PDF 1.4
  • MR1016023814: Allow user-defined paper sizes in transforms from AFP
  • MR1017025822: Allow custom paper sizes in AFP to PCL transform
  • MR1028032146: PDF to AFP transform support for PDF 1.4

Planning information

Installability: The Infoprint Transforms to AFP V2.1 for z/OS are different from those in the predecessor product. The primary difference is in the font set available in the PostScript and PDF to AFP transforms. Production jobs that require absolute font fidelity should be tested with the new transforms before putting applications that use them into production.

Direct customer support: Direct customer support is provided by IBM Operational Support Services — SoftwareXcel Enterprise Edition or SoftwareXcel Basic Edition. These fee services can enhance your productivity by providing voice and electronic access into the IBM support organization. IBM Operational Support Services — SoftwareXcel Enterprise Edition or SoftwareXcel Basic Edition will help answer questions pertaining to usage, how-to, and suspected software defects for eligible products.

Installation and technical support is provided by IBM Global Services. For more information on services, call 888-426-4343.

Security, auditability, and control

The announced programs use the security and auditability features of the operating system software, or equivalent security programs. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
