| Description |
IBM WebSphere Portal for Multiplatforms is an enterprise portal solution with the complete portal services necessary to deliver a single point of personalized interaction to applications, content, business processes, and people for a unified user experience.
WebSphere Portal rationalizes and simplifies IT infrastructure by streamlining business processes while improving access to applications, content, and people by leveraging a complete set of portal platform services: framework services, integration services, content services, and collaboration services.
Portal Framework Services allow you to simplify the development, deployment, and management of highly dynamic, personalized portal applications. WebSphere Portal includes many framework services, but the following two are featured:
- Virtual portals service allows customers to create multiple portal sites on one instance of WebSphere Portal. Each site has its own URL, look and feel, pages, users and groups, and search index. All sites share the same WebSphere Application Server (WAS) instance, installed portlets, and document libraries. With virtual portal, companies can centrally manage many different portals targeted to different constituencies in or outside of their organization, saving money on portal management, yet offering variety and customization to users.
- Brokered cooperation service, also called "click-to-action," allows independently developed portlets to exchange information. The objective of the click-to-action portlets is to increase the productivity of portal users working with multiple portlets by enabling them to easily send information from one portlet to another. For example, users can click on information that is displayed in one portlet and transfer that information to another portlet to generate a query and update the display.
Integration Services allow you to leverage existing investments in systems by simplifying access, integration, and orchestration of content, applications, and data into the portal. WebSphere Portal includes many integration services, but the following three are featured:
- Business process integration service of WebSphere Portal includes a process choreographer for building work-flow processes that can be integrated into a person's portal experience. Portal's navigation paradigm is now not only role-based, but also includes activities in progress that are available to users through the "My Task" portlet. By combining people and applications at a process level, transactions and the decisions that drive them can be executed faster.
- WebSphere Portal Application Integrator (WPAI) service is a business tool that provides a fast way to build new portlets that access various kinds of Enterprise Application systems, including SAP, PeopleSoft, Siebel, and Domino applications. It also works for relational databases, such as DB2®, Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, and others. Simply put, each tool is a portlet that builds new portlets for a specific back-end system using a set of predefined interaction models. Operating the builder tool is simple and easy for administrators or business users so that a portal user can quickly interact with critical business processes.
- Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) and JSR 168 standard support in WebSphere Portal are proof points to IBM's leadership and strategy to support open standards. With WSRP, portal administrators can select from a rich choice of remote content and applications, integrating it into their portal with just a few mouse clicks and no programming effort. By virtue of the common, well-defined WSRP interfaces, all Web services that implement WSRP plug into WSRP-compliant portals without requiring any service-specific adapters. A single, service-independent adapter on the portal side is sufficient to integrate any WSRP services. Now, no custom programming effort using a variety of different interfaces and protocols is required. Portal administrators no longer have to write interface code to adapt the WSRP services for their portal.
Portal Content Services deliver prebuilt productivity components and services that allow users to create, manage, and search content, documents, and Web assets. WebSphere Portal includes many content services, but the following three are featured:
- Portal document manager (PDM) has been enhanced so that users can easily share, view, and organize files of all types ranging from documents to spreadsheets within the Portal community. It now offers category subscription services, simple approval processes for file contribution, versioning so that users can track the evolution of a piece of content, and access control for managing viewing privileges of different content items.
- WebSphere Portal now includes IBM Workplace Web Content Manager with a restricted license for portal use. By leveraging content in back-end systems, Workplace Web Content Management reduces development and implementation time, placing content creation and management firmly in the hands of content experts for "author once, publish everywhere" control. The end result is that content on your portal is more accurate and updated frequently.
- Content management repository service is provided via the inclusion of DB2 Content Manager runtime. This service can manage all forms of content (Web, e-mail, documents, digitized paper documents, images, audio, video, and text messages) access from your portal consistently. A content management repository adds functionality over a database alone by providing a portal interface to not just store data, but to provide the structure to quickly access and associate that data with the business processes driving your business.
Collaboration Services provide a set of ready-to-use collaborative portlets and services that allow portal users to find, connect, and work with people inside and outside of the organization. WebSphere Portal Enable includes portlets to access these services, while WebSphere Portal Extend provides back-end collaboration services. The following three collaboration services are featured:
- People Finder service An online company directory and organizational navigator. People Finder lets you find any employee by name and see the employee's contact information, background, areas of expertise, and context within the company's organizational chart (manager and peers).
- My Lotus® Team Workspaces (QuickPlace) service Lists your workplaces, which are provided by Lotus QuickPlace, right on the portal page. You can search across all of the team workspaces you belong to, quickly see what's new in a workplace, join a workplace, or create a new workplace.
- Instant messaging service All WebSphere Portal portlets can be integrated and enabled with presence awareness, which indicates if a portal user is available for an instant messaging session. This allows you to start a chat session with someone within the context of the business process being executed. You never have to leave the portal to access applications and work with your associates, which helps you make faster and better business decisions.
What's new in WebSphere Portal for Multiplatforms V5.1.0.1
Today's business climate drives the need for business flexibility. Across every industry, market forces are driving new business models, competition is increasing, and companies need to respond to changes up and down their supply chain. To meet this need for flexibility, an on demand business needs an infrastructure designed to scale quickly and cost effectively. To meet that need, WebSphere Portal now provides support for IBM i5/OS and WebSphere Application Server Version 6.
WebSphere Portal Enable for Multiplatforms Version 5.1.0.1 can now
be run on IBM iSeries servers. Built with IBM's innovative POWER5
processors,
iSeries servers are designed to reduce complexity,
streamline your infrastructure, and enhance productivity through server
consolidation. By integrating applications onto a single platform, you
can grow your IT infrastructure along with your company without
adding an extra server every time you take on a new business challenge.
WebSphere Portal can now take advantage of iSeries self-managing features
which help automate the monitoring of key processes and prevent downtime.
WebSphere Portal has always leveraged the power and leadership of WebSphere Application Server to deliver scalable and high performance portal solutions. With new support for WebSphere Application Server Version 6, portal customers can now take advantage of a Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) using the latest Web services standards. SOA allow the building of composite applications that provide the flexibility, while WebSphere Portal delivers those applications and processes to the right people in your business.
IBM Workplace Web Content Management (WCM) enhancements for WebSphere Portal includes support for third-party editors, personalization integration, and vertical clustering. The personalization integration now allows content owners to utilize advanced personalization rules using user and content attributes from within the authoring environment. The vertical clustering support will allow for more than one instance of WCM on a single machine. This requires that each instance of WCM has its own database for content storage, and that WebSphere Portal is also configured for vertical clustering to provide maximum performance.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
With the exception of Lotus Team Workplace, Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing, and the WebSphere Portal productivity components, WebSphere Portal for Multiplatforms V5.1.0.1 has the following accessibility characteristics:
-
Features for vision-impaired users:
- Supports interfaces commonly used by screen readers (Windows only)
- Can be operated using only the keyboard
- Allows the user to request more time to complete timed responses
- Supports customization of display attributes, such as color, contrast, and font size
- Communicates all information independently of color
- Supports interfaces commonly used by screen magnifiers (Windows only)
- Supports the attachment of alternative output devices
- Provides documentation in an accessible format
-
Features for users with mobility impairments or limited hand use:

Charge metrics definitions
"Per processor" charging under Full Capacity
In Full Capacity charging where charges are based on a capacity based metric, such as a processor, Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) must be acquired for all capacity that is active on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.
As an example, a customer has ordered a server with four processors. The server is shipped with six processors, but two of them are "inactive." Thus, four processors are active for the customer.
Notes:
- IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
- Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. With multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
- In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.
"Per managed processor" charging under Full Capacity
"Per Managed processor": Charges are based on the active processors on the machines in the computing environment affiliated with the program rather than on the server where the program is run. The managed processors which require PoEs are defined in the License Information's program-unique terms.
- The program may not run on some or all of the processors for which PoEs are required by the program's valuation method.
- In the zSeries' IFL environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blades with which the program is affiliated.
