Description

When WebSphere Developer for zSeries is used with the IBM Software Development Platform, developers can extend its processing to meet a broad range of requirements and change management, and test functions directly from WebSphere Developer for zSeries.

Key capabilities of WebSphere Developer for zSeries enable you to:

  • Integrate your existing z/OS® business applications with interoperable Web services and service-oriented architectures.
  • Utilize easy-to-use wizards and tools to bring many aspects of Web development (HTML, JSP, JSF, and servlets) into a common interface and enable developers with diverse technical backgrounds, and even those unfamiliar with Java, to build rich, data driven applications.
    • Visually map and construct Web applications using Model-View-Controller design with Java Server Faces and Struts.
    • Quickly build rich Web user interfaces and Web forms with reusable drag-and-drop Java Server Faces (JSF) components and generate code for event handling, user input validations, and data binding.
    • Easily build rich-function Web pages in a visual or source editing mode using the advanced-function HTML and JSP editor.
  • Code in a fourth-generation language (4GL) and generate to COBOL, Java, or both. Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) is a fourth-generation language that enables procedural developers to rapidly deliver Web, mixed workload, and "green screen" applications and business logic using familiar programming constructs — without coding in Java. EGL is tightly integrated with Java Server Faces so you can build highly interactive applications using JSF components.
  • Connect your Web applications to relational databases, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) components, and Web services using simple point-and-click tools that support Service Data Objects, an emerging industry standard for accessing heterogeneous data.
  • Improve the productivity of your COBOL and PL/I developers with development and maintenance tools for z/OS applications (COBOL, PL/I), as well as access to z/OS file systems, submitting z/OS jobs, monitoring z/OS Job execution queues, and debugging z/OS artifacts after access.
  • Accelerate portal, SOA, and J2EE using RAD tools and wizards.
  • Leverage existing skills and shorten the Java learning curve with drag-and-drop UI components and point-and-click database connectivity.
  • Improve code quality with automated tools for applying J2EE coding standard reviews, component and Web Service unit testing, and multitier runtime analysis.
  • Visualize and graphically edit code through the UML Visual Editor for Java and EJB.
  • Collaborate and share assets across the team using built-in IBM Rational® ClearCase® LT version control.
  • Adapt and extend your development environment with Eclipse-based plug-ins to match your needs.
  • Quickly build and deploy interactive reports using drag-and-drop UI components and Crystal Reports.
  • Speed coding by using the visual configurable editor and statement assisted creation, and verify syntax of COBOL, PL/I, EGL, and Java languages.
  • Provide open access by developing, testing, and deploying Web Services to WebSphere, CICS, and IMS environments.

A host of significant new features and feature enhancements in V6.0 build on an already comprehensive set of features. They include:

  • New functions in EGL that include language enhancements to make the language even more productive. This includes many additional datatypes, new built-in date, time, and string manipulation functions, and SQL processing enhancements especially for list processing. In addition, the use of Jasper Reports has been tightly integrated with EGL for development of Web or Java applications that need to produce reports in multiple formats.
  • New tooling in the IDE for EGL development to add to the efficiency of the programmer using the EGL language. Included is a wizard to automatically generate data and logic parts in EGL based on an existing relational table definition. Also included are new tools for program understanding such as a hierarchical view of a program and its components and enhanced search capabilities. For those customers who currently use Informix™ 4GL for development, a conversion utility is provided to convert Informix 4GL source into the EGL syntax.
  • Upgraded XML and Web Services support, enabling SOA access to CICS Transaction Server V3.1 and IMS V9.
    • Support for integrated WSDL generation
    • Mapping between COBOL and WSDL
  • Visual BMS Map and EGL Form WYSIWYG Editor. The BMS Editor also generates JSF Web Pages and associated Java Beans for simplified conversion from "green screens" to Web user interfaces.
  • Significant updates to remote file access, including HFS support.
  • Host Access Transformation Services V6 developer technology supporting rapid integration to screen driven interfaces.

Other J2EE capabilities include:

Service Flow Modeler Technology Preview

The Service Flow Modeler component of IBM WebSphere Developer for zSeries V6.0 is being introduced as a "Technology Preview." The tooling component is provided "as is" for evaluation purposes only, and is not warranted by IBM. To obtain a warranted version of the tooling component, you must obtain a later release of WebSphere Developer for zSeries which includes this code. If a question or problem is encountered with the use of the nonwarranted tooling component, and you want to provide feedback to IBM, you must use the newsgroup forum located at

    news://news.software.ibm.com/ibm.software. websphere.studio.enterprise-developer

When creating these items on the newsgroup, use a subject line of "Service Flow Modeler."

Service Flow Modeler is a multifunctional tool supporting modern application architectures and the transformation and reuse of existing application processes. It is designed to help leverage your investment, and the QOS, of existing enterprise information systems and the CICS Runtime (EIS) and Host Access Transformation Services, while at the same time enabling the move towards service oriented architecture (SOA). You can use Service Flow Modeler to:

  • Model a newly composed business service — or flow — using processes or services and their interfaces
  • Capture existing EIS (screen or communication area) interfaces or generate a new SOA suitable interface
  • Generate adapters to and from interfaces supporting both the accumulation of information — used in request and response processing — as well as data transformation activities between the flow and the interface
  • Expose business flows as a service or Web service

Customers who want to participate in the technology preview to gain early experience with this support should visit the WebSphere Developer for zSeries Web site at

CICS Integration Technology provided with CICS Transaction Server

The CICS Integration Technology function provided with CICS Transaction Server exploited by the Service Flow Modeler provides the following enhancements:

  • Server adapter support — In addition to Link3270 Server adapter, server adapters for DPL (commarea), WebSphere MQ, and FEPI are provided.
  • Deployment patterns — Deployment patterns vary depending on the characteristics of the adapter service and nature of the request. For example, an Adapter service for a complex business transaction may require access to multiple target applications and may result in data being updated, while an Adapter service of a simple business transaction may require access to only a single target application and may result in no data being updated. Patterns can be categorized as follows:
    • The single connector — nonpersistent pattern consists of one or more interactions with multiple target systems from within a single generated and deployed server adapter program.
    • The single connector — persistent pattern provides for the context of the adapter (request/reply data and an intermediate stage data). It also participates in two phase commit or roll back of the back-end transaction.
    • The aggregate connector — nonpersistent and persistent patterns — Each connector type can be composed into a command sequence which can have one or more interactions with the target application. State data can be persisted.

Also generates COBOL adapters and CICS Transaction Server V3 WSBind artifacts.

Enterprise Generation Language (EGL): WebSphere Developer for zSeries includes EGL, a high-level procedural language (familiar to SQL, COBOL, RPQ, and Informix™ 4GL developers) that developers, unfamiliar with Java, can use to quickly build data-driven Web applications and business logic. Developers can write and debug their applications in EGL and WebSphere Developer for zSeries generates the Java code for them. Used in conjunction with JavaServer Faces (JSF), EGL allows developers to build dynamic Web applications without having to learn the Java language. This capability opens up Java development to a new class of developers that apply their business domain expertise and use their skills as procedural developers to build dynamic Web applications.

EGL is a development environment and programming language that lets you write full-function applications quickly, freeing you to focus on the business problem your code is addressing rather than on software technologies. You can use similar I/O statements to access different types of external data stores, for example, whether those data stores are files, relational databases, or message queues. The details of Java and J2EE are hidden from you, too, so you can deliver enterprise data to browsers even if you have minimal experience with Web technologies. After you code an EGL program, you generate it to create Java source (or COBOL source with the optional, new EGL for COBOL Extension feature described below); then EGL prepares the output to produce executable objects.

A conversion utility is also provided enabling batch conversion of VisualAge® Generator V4.5 programs and other source to the new EGL language syntax.

Enterprise Generation Language for COBOL Extension: Application processes built in EGL can also be deployed to zSeries CICS environments through the EGL for COBOL Extension feature, which can be purchased separately. EGL generation to the COBOL language enables deployment of server-based EGL components to CICS environments. Connectivity is provided through JCA. Application patterns or environments supported include:

  • Terminal user interface (TUI) and batch applications accessing DB2®, VSAM, MQ, and CICS data stores deployed to CICS Transaction Server and batch applications
  • JSF UI components integrated with CICS services

Globalization support: WebSphere Developer for zSeries complies with basic globalization support requirements. A multilingual version of this product is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

WebSphere Developer for zSeries has two charge units — Authorized User and Floating User.

An Authorized User is one and only one individual, machine, program, or device with a specific identity (ID) within or outside the customer's enterprise. A Proof of Entitlement is required for each authorized user accessing the program or any program component either directly or indirectly through any means on behalf of the user. An example of indirect access would be through a multiplexing program, device, or application server. The program can be accessed by multiple users provided that a user authorization has been obtained for each individual user. Authorized users have unique specific identity and IDs cannot be shared. An ID can establish one or more connections and count as a single User.

A Floating User, also known as a concurrent user, is one individual, machine, program, or device within or outside of the customer's enterprise. A Proof of Entitlement is required for the highest number of floating users simultaneously accessing the program or any program component either directly or indirectly through any means on behalf of the user. An example of indirect access would be through a multiplexing program, device, or application server. A floating user can establish one or more connections and count as a single user.

Warranty: This program has warranty for a minimum of one year from acquisition from IBM or authorized IBM Business Partner. The warranty provided to the customer, for at least one year from acquisition, is access to databases (read Web sites) for program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or obtain otherwise and install at leisure.

Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Customers will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund. This applies only to your first acquisition of the program.

The WebSphere Developer for zSeries media package contains complimentary bundled offerings. No license for use of any of the bundled offerings is granted by the license for use of WebSphere Developer for zSeries, and use of the bundled offerings contained in the WebSphere Developer for zSeries media packs is subject to restrictions. In addition, the bundled offerings are not entitled to receive service support. In order to use any one of the bundled offerings outside of the usage restrictions and to receive support, you must obtain a license for the offering.

The Service Flow Modeler and Asset Analyzer Technology Previews are unwarranted software provided "as is" for evaluation and feedback purposes only. These Technology Previews are not covered under the same licensing, warranty, program technical support, and software maintenance as the WebSphere Developer for zSeries product. For each Technology Preview, there is a separate license with unique terms and conditions covering licensing, warranty, program technical support, and software maintenance. Refer to the license for the Technology Preview you want to evaluate to understand the terms and conditions that apply to your use of that software.

Software Maintenance applies: Yes

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support, is included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity, with voice and electronic access into IBM support organizations.

IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option that is available.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short-duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
