| Description |
Speed to market and quality of service are critical for success, so companies need to be agile to survive. WebSphere MQ family provides a reliable and versatile foundation for an enterprise service bus (ESB).
Business integration
IBM WebSphere software includes business integration products and solutions that can help integrate just two applications, a single department, or the entire enterprise, reaching across business channels, trading partners, and Web customers. The WebSphere platform includes:
- WebSphere MQ, the core of the application integration, which integrates many platforms. Providing the messaging foundation for an enterprise service bus, and assuring reliable message delivery, it can be used alone or combined seamlessly with WebSphere Application Server.
- WebSphere MQ Extended Security Edition, which enhances WebSphere MQ with end-to-end, application-level data protection features. It enables enterprise-wide, remote management of security polices on your MQ network and can be deployed to existing production environments without changes to existing WebSphere MQ applications.
- WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker, a powerful information broker that includes a one-to-many connectivity model plus transformation, intelligent routing, and information flow modelling across multiple, disparate business systems. It also supports publications and subscriptions including mobile clients, and remote telemetry devices.
- WebSphere MQ Everyplace®, which brings the benefits of assured message delivery and rock-solid security to the failure-prone environment of mobile working.
- WebSphere MQ Workflow, a business process management system that enables the definition, execution, and swift change of complete business processes that span systems, applications, and people.
WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0
Enhancements provided by WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0 include the following.
Manageability
- Support for programmable command format (PCF) messages has been added, making it possible to write administration and monitoring programs that are common to z/OS and distributed platforms.
- The new DISPLAY CONN command shows which applications are connected to a queue manager, which queues they have opened, and unit-of-work information.
- New status information shows whether messages are being processed or are being delayed, and indicates potential delay points.
- It is easier to see important information returned from status commands because PCF and MQSC commands now have a WHERE clause that filters queries. This can be used in commands that enquire about status, to see potential problems before they cause a significant outage.
- New attributes for queues and cluster channels extend the range of cluster workload algorithms.
- WebSphere MQ can track the route that a message would be expected to take through its network. New flags can request that queue managers that process the message should send back an activity report (for example: which channel, queue manager, and transmission queue have been used).
Standards
- Java Message Service (JMS) V1.1. The current version of the JMS standard is supported. The older level of the interface is also included for backward compatibility.
- Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). IPv6 is the latest version of the IP protocols and provides many more IP addresses than under IPv4. WebSphere MQ fully supports IPv6 networks.
Enterprise service bus
- A combination of WebSphere MQ servers, WebSphere Application Server deployments, and WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker can be used to allow you to deploy an enterprise service bus (ESB). This mixed network of servers can then seamlessly exchange information across your enterprise, regardless of whether the original communication began as a JMS message from WebSphere Application Server or WebSphere MQ, or as a native message from WebSphere MQ.
Availability and capacity
- The 63 KB limit on shared queues has been removed. The maximum message length on shared queues is increased to 100 MB, which is the same as messages on all other queues.
- More system resources (such as buffers, pagesets, and buffer pools) can be modified online and there are increases in permitted limits.
- Multiple TCP/IP stacks can be used.
- SupportPac MO12 (Log Extract Program) has been integrated.
- Many channel initiator (CHIN) configuration parameters, including some SSL configurations, can be changed online.
- Pagesets can increase to 64 GB. Pagesets and buffer pools can be added and removed dynamically. Buffers can be added and removed dynamically from buffer pools. Log datasets can be added dynamically (for example, if the current log becomes full). Pagesets can be expanded dynamically before they become full.
- All channel types now support data compression, which can improve network bandwidth usage and may also improve performance of encrypted SSL channels.
Usability
- The Eclipse-based configuration user interface that is provided by the WebSphere MQ V6.0 product on the Microsoft Windows and Linux x86 platforms can be used to define and manage MQ resources on the z/OS platform. Eclipse is an award-winning, open source platform for the construction of powerful software development tools and rich desktop applications.
Some other new function
- New events are generated that report on MQSC and PCF commands.
- The IMS bridge supports new SUSPEND and RESUME BRIDGE commands.
- Granularity for Passticket security validation is improved.
In addition, certain functions have been removed in WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0. These are:
- The Application Messaging Interface (AMI), which is now a Category 3 SupportPac, matching the delivery mechanism for other WebSphere MQ platforms
- The CICS® Mover
- Support for IUCV and TCPAccess native interfaces to Unicenter TCP/IP
Accessibility by people with disabilities
The following features support use by people with disabilities:
- Operation by keyboard alone
- Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings
- Screen readers and screen magnifiers tested for use by people with visual impairment
- Speech recognition products tested for use by people with mobility impairment
- Optional display of audio alerts for people with hearing impairment
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0 is capable, as of June 24, 2005, when used in accordance with
IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly
interoperates with it.

Service-oriented architecture and enterprise service bus
In a service-oriented architecture (SOA), a connectivity layer often referred to as an ESB optimizes information distribution between service requesters and service providers. Each enterprise can develop its own unique ESB, reflecting how far it has advanced toward becoming an On Demand Business.
As key members of the IBM WebSphere software portfolio, WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Application Server, and WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker enable you to begin deploying your enterprise service bus today.
These programs help maximize the value of your IT investments by broadening the range of environments this connectivity layer can reach, such as hardware and operating system platforms and programming models such as J2EE and .NET.
The proven delivery mechanisms of WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Application Server provide ESBs with a reliable underpinning for enterprise-class connectivity. WebSphere Application Server messaging resources provide a best-of-breed Java Message Service (JMS) implementation for use with J2EE hosted applications. WebSphere MQ seamlessly extends those messaging resources to non-J2EE environments to integrate virtually anything, across more than 40 platforms. WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker adds services such as message routing and transformation and support for a range of message distribution options and protocols to improve their flexibility and performance.
Business integration software from IBM enables you to begin reaping the benefits of service-oriented architectures and begin deploying ESBs today.
IBM can help you to grow project-by-project toward an On Demand Business.
WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Application Server, and WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker play a

customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware
error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service
agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware
problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service
that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected
through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they
are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.

Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products: Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products are based on product LPAR utilization capacity. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a VWLC product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which a VWLC product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period. Refer to Software Announcement 200-354 , dated October 3, 2000, Software Announcement 201-258 , dated September 11, 2001, and Software Announcement 202-105 , dated April 30, 2002, for additional details on IBM Workload License Charges.
Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions:
zSeries software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible VWLC products apply
when z/OS is running in z/Architecture (64 bit) mode on an IBM zSeries 900, no other MVS-based operating system is
licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with
the applicable terms.
Sub-capacity charges for a VWLC product are based on the utilization of the LPARs where and when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for VWLC products, the customer is required to:
- Sign and abide by the terms of the Attachment for zSeries Workload License Charges (Z125-6516).
- Obtain the latest version of the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool.
-
Install any VWLC product and IBM
zSeries 900 Licensed Internal Code (LIC) service required for sub-capacity charging. Required service will be listed on the WLC Web site
- Collect SMF data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain the collected SMF data for a period of not less than six months.
- Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected SMF data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to determine required license capacity for the VWLC products. Required license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a VWLC product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period. IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these product defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after the data was collected.
- Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive application of sub-capacity charges.
- Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly.
-
Submit Sub-Capacity Reports for all VWLC products with complete data for
the entire reporting period to the e-mail address and by the date
specified on the zSeries Software Pricing Web site
and in the current Workload License Charge Exhibit (Z125-6324). Sub-Capacity Reports that reflect a changed product defined capacity will be considered to be orders placed by the customer without further action on the customer's part and IBM is authorized to make any resulting billing increase or decrease. To place an order for a new license or to discontinue licenses, move licenses between machines, report a hardware model upgrade or enable or disable product features, the customer must contact IBM or their IBM Business Partner.
-
Configure machine to send weekly Transmit System Availability Data (TSAD)
to IBM via the IBM
zSeries 900 Remote Support Facility (RSF). If the machine cannot connect via the RSF, provide this TSAD via an alternate means documented in the z/OS publication Planning for Workload License Charges at
