Description

This release of IBM Parallel Environment for AIX 5L contains the following enhancements:

IBM eServer® pSeries High Performance Switch running on AIX 5L V5.2

  • Parallel Environment now operates with the HPS using low-level application programming interface (LAPI) to optimize Message Passing Interface (MPI) performance over the switch in user space.
  • Parallel Environment now supports remote direct memory access (RDMA) for bulk data copy/transfer of large contiguous messages on the HPS only.
  • Parallel Environment supports striping of messages over multiple adapters attached to the pSeries HPS. This support is enabled by run-time environment variables and is transparent to the user application.
  • A parallel job that uses both MPI and LAPI may specify shared access to the user space communication subsystem. This allows more efficient use of the processor and adapter resources on the HPS.

Parallel System Support Programs (PSSP) and SP Switch2: This version of Parallel Environment also operates with SP Switch2 on selected node types of the RS/6000® SP or Cluster 1600, with support provided by PSSP. This is the last release of Parallel Environment that will provide this support. Parallel Environment V4.2 does not support the SP Switch.

Security and usability

  • Statistics collection and printing enhancements
  • Co-scheduler for parallel task scheduling

Support for POWER5 and AIX 5L V5.3

  • POWER5 hardware counters.
  • Simultaneous multithreading (SMT). SMT mode is supported on AIX 5L V5.3. Performance of SMT depends on the characteristics of the user application.

Product positioning

Parallel Environment is a must for high-performance cluster customers who demand effective tools for developing, debugging, analyzing, tuning, and running parallel C/C++ and Fortran applications that use the industry-standard MPI. It is designed to be MPI compliant, to ease application porting and development, and to maximize application performance on pSeries clusters.

Remote direct memory access (RDMA) provides overlap between computation and communication for large messages, allowing more CPU cycles to be devoted to users' problems.

Parallel Environment/LAPI is the only way to exploit the performance features of the HPS, both low latency (approximately 5 microseconds on a 1.7 GHz p655+) and high bandwidth (up to 1.8 GB/sec/link on a 1.7 GHz p655+ with RDMA enabled). Actual performance is dependent on the machine type and hardware configuration used. Older model machines tend to perform slower than the latest highest CPU frequency machines.

The AIX 5L V5.2 64-bit kernel is supported.

Note: Support for the AIX 32-bit kernel is available via special bid for PSSP.

  • Clustered RS/6000 workstations, POWER3, POWER4, or POWER5 servers, either stand-alone or connected via a LAN supporting IP, running AIX 5L V5.2 or V5.3 32-bit or 64-bit kernel.
  • Cluster 1600 (RS/6000 SP) processor models not specifically mentioned in this section may run, but are not formally supported.

Software requirements

  • AIX 5L V5.2 (5765-E62) with the 5200-05 Recommended Maintenance Package, or later, or AIX 5L V5.3 (5765-G03) with the 5300-01 Recommended Maintenance Package, or later.
  • PSSP V3.5 (5765-D51), with APAR IY49007 (PSSP 3.5 support for Cluster software products running AIX 5.2), or later, and APAR IY65607, or later, when running on an SP system. PSSP is not required when Parallel Environment is used on a stand-alone or cluster of pSeries or RS/6000 workstations or servers.
  • If user space batch or interactive jobs are to be submitted under Parallel Environment, then LoadLeveler® V3.3 (5765-E69) is required. Minimal support for a customer-supplied scheduler is provided via sample code.
  • XL FORTRAN for AIX V9.1 (5724-I08), or later, if Fortran programs are to be run.
  • For C/C++, one of the following:
    • VisualAge® C++ Professional for AIX, V6.0, (5765-F56), or later, if C or C++ programs are to be run.

IBM C for AIX Version 6 is now part of VisualAge C++ Professional for AIX, V6.0, and is also available as a separate file set.

    • IBM XL C/C++ Enterprise Edition V7.0 for AIX (5724-I11), or later, supports the latest POWER5 architecture.

Compatibility: IBM Parallel Environment for AIX 5L, V4.2 is a functional enhancement and complete replacement of IBM Parallel Environment for AIX 5L, V4.1.

MPI programs compiled with prior versions of Parallel Environment using shared library support are binary compatible. That is, executables built using Parallel Environment V2.4, V3.1, V3.2, and V4.1 will run correctly with Parallel Environment V4.2.

Applications compiled with XL High Performance Fortran for AIX, V1.3.1 (5765-612) will run correctly, but will use the threaded MPI library.

Parallel ESSL for AIX 5L, V3.2 (5765-F84) works with Parallel Environment for AIX 5L, V4.2.

When Parallel Environment V4.2 is run with PSSP, the AIX 64-bit kernel is supported. When Parallel Environment V4.2 operates on the HPS, the AIX 64-bit kernel is supported. Stand-alone servers, which will use shared memory for inter-task communication, and IP-connected servers may use either the 32-bit or 64-bit kernel.

Note: Support for the AIX 32-bit kernel is available via special bid for PSSP.

Limitations: Parallel Environment V4.2 runs with PSSP V3.5. This is the last release of IBM Parallel Environment for AIX 5L that will run on PSSP.

When Parallel Environment is used with the SP system, Parallel Environment jobs can only run in a system partition that has all of its nodes at the same PSSP level.

LAPI is distributed as part of AIX 5L V5.2 or V5.3. When Parallel Environment is used in conjunction with PSSP, it uses a version of LAPI shipped with PSSP.

SP nodes are only supported when running the 64-bit kernel. Stand-alone servers are supported both with the 32-bit and 64-bit kernel.

Parallel Environment V4.2 does not support the SP Switch.

Performance considerations: Parallel Environment and the MPI library are intended for use in High Performance Computing (HPC) applications that can exploit multiple processors to achieve parallelism, using message passing to pass data among the processors where necessary. In such environments, performance of the interconnecting network is important.

This version of Parallel Environment exploits the features of the pSeries High Performance Switch to achieve high bandwidth and low latency for messages between clustered pSeries servers. The basic technique employed, called user space, reserves a portion of the High Performance Switch adapter for use by a user process, which then can read/write message data directly onto the interconnect without having to copy the data from/to the AIX kernel.

The user space support is provided by LAPI, which is optimized for the features of the High Performance Switch, and supports both packet mode and bulk transfer mode data transfers with reliable delivery. Maximum bandwidth is achieved when the RDMA mode is used in conjunction with large contiguous messages.

For additional performance, shared memory may be used for point-to-point passing of data among processors within an SMP without changes to the application. In 64-bit mode, there are shared memory-based enhancements to certain collective communication routines.

For convenience in developing applications, the user may select UDP/IP as the packet transport rather than user space. This is done via a run-time specification and is transparent to the application. Performance does not match user space, but the application under development ties up fewer dedicated resources.

Jobs with large task counts are often constrained by the amount of memory available to a process. This version of Parallel Environment uses less memory for jobs with large task counts than prior versions and may improve performance by allowing a larger problem data space to be maintained in real memory.

This announcement satisfies or partially satisfies requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities. Groups include Australasian SHARE/GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, G.U.I.D.E. Europe, Japan GUIDE/SHARE (JGS), Guide Latin American (LAG), SHARE EUROPE, SP-XXL, and SHARE Incorporated. Requirements satisfied include:

  • Support for a larger number of tasks
  • SMP collective communication scalability
  • MPI memory scalability

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: For all processors within a parallel job, the same release level of the IBM Parallel Environment for AIX 5L software is required.

For the IBM pSeries High Performance Switch, you need to install and configure the switch, and ensure that it is accessible via IP from all nodes on which Parallel Environment is to be installed. If LoadLeveler is being used, LoadLeveler must be configured with the appropriate network definitions, pools, and classes.

System Program Order (SPO) (5692-A5L): A 5692-A5L SPO is mandatory for shipments of program distribution and publications. The individual licensed program orders are for registration and billing purposes only. No shipment occurs under these orders.

Machine-readable materials are only available on CD-ROM. To receive shipment of machine-readable materials under SPO (5692-A5L), order the CD-ROM media.

Specify feature number 3410. Billing for the media is generated under the SPO. To prevent additional billing expenses, place only one SPO order per machine.

Select one of the following (5692-A5L) features for the licensed program hardcopy entitled publications.

                                 Program Feature
Program name number number

Parallel Environment for 5692-A5L 0978
 AIX 5L, V4.2

Under SPO 5692-A5L, feature number 3470 can be used to suppress hardcopy documentation. To order entitled hardcopy documentation only, order feature number 3430.

On/Off Capacity on Demand

IBM offers a daily price option to enable you to dynamically change your available server capacity. On/Off Capacity on Demand (OOCoD) allows you to dynamically increase and decrease server capacity based on changing workload demands.

This offering allows you to pay a fee to enable and use temporary server capacity of Parallel Environment based on a contiguous 24-hour period basis using the following features. For specific terms, refer to Software Announcement 204-298 , dated December 7, 2004.

Terms and conditions

Agreement: IBM International Program License Agreement. Proofs of Entitlement are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.

The following agreement applies for maintenance and does not require customer signatures: IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011).

Limited warranty applies: Yes

Warranty: This program has warranty for a minimum of one year from acquisition from IBM or authorized IBM Business Partner. The warranty provided to the customer, for at least one year from acquisition, is access to databases (read Web sites) for program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or obtain otherwise and install at leisure.

Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program, return it within 30 days from the invoice date to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it for a refund. For clarification, note that

  1. This term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
  2. For programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by the customer.

Copy and use on home/portable computer: No

Volume orders (IVO): Yes, contact your IBM representative.

Passport Advantage® applies: No

Software Maintenance applies: Yes

All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short-duration installation and usage (how-to) questions and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your IS technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, visit

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for:

  • The design and development of applications
  • Your use of programs in other than their specified operating environments
  • Failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement

For additional information, refer to Changes to Selected Distributed Software Products acquired through IBM or Business Partners who remarket iSeries™ and pSeries Software Announcement 201-201 , dated July 10, 2001. Stand-alone upgrades to this product/release and its future versions and releases will be considered only on a special request basis from IBM.

Also, refer to Software Announcement 203-217 , dated September 9, 2003.

IBM Operational Support Services — SoftwareXcel: Yes

Other support: pSeries SW Maintenance

iSeries Software Maintenance applies: No

Variable charges apply: No

Educational allowance available: Yes, 15% education allowance applies to qualified education institution customers.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions

To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products apply when running:

  • AIX 5L V5.1, or later, on an IBM eServer pSeries 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine
  • OS/400® V5.1, or later, running on an IBM eServer iSeries Server
  • Linux™ running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5.1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server

Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:

  • Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
  • Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
  • If the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements, you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these "freed up" entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance, and Support volumes and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

On/Off Capacity on Demand

To be eligible for On/Off Capacity on Demand pricing, customers must be enabled for temporary capacity on the corresponding hardware and the required contract — Z125-6907, Amendment for iSeries and pSeries Temporary Capacity On Demand — Software — must be signed prior to use.
