Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to enable high availability of business applications by helping to provide superior data protection and unique technology to help significantly improve performance and resource utilization. Additionally, optional application modules for mail, databases, application servers, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and hardware may help provide higher levels of application and hardware integration with the data protection process.

Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help ensure the recoverability through the automated creation, tracking, and vaulting of reliable recovery points. Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help the user evolve into an on demand storage environment in order to help deliver specific results in the areas of:

  • Improved application availability
  • Optimized storage resource utilization
  • Enhanced storage personnel productivity

Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 is designed to help provide significant improvements to the ease of use, and ease of administration and serviceability characteristics. These enhancements may help customers improve the productivity of personnel administering and using Tivoli Storage Manager. Additionally, the product is designed to be easier to use for new administrators and users.

Tivoli Storage Manager Administration Center

A new Web interface for administrators, called the Administration Center, is enhanced to help provide easier deployment and administration, to help the user improve personnel productivity, and to help the user use resources more efficiently.

The Administration Center is installed as an IBM Integrated Solutions Console (ISC) component. The Administration Center helps provide a consolidated view for managing the user's Tivoli Storage Manager servers. ISC can also be used with other IBM products that have interfaces built to the ISC architecture.

The Administration Center enhancements include:

  • A task-oriented interface guiding the end user through the administration of Tivoli Storage Manager servers
  • A single interface to sign onto and manage multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers
  • Wizards to simplify and help reduce the time needed to complete more complex task
  • A new, more modern look and feel for the Administrator Web interface and consistent look and feel with other IBM products
  • An interface based on an architecture for potential integration among IBM products
  • A tutorial to guide the user through the new integrated Tivoli Storage Manager environment

Calendar-based scheduling

Scheduling of Tivoli Storage Manager operations may be done with an external scheduler or with the built-in Tivoli Storage Manager scheduler. The Tivoli Storage Manager scheduler provides calendar-based scheduling designed to increase flexibility of client and administrative schedules. The scheduler can be exploited via administrative commands or the Web interface.

Some examples of schedules that can be created are:

  • First and third Tuesday of every month
  • Last Friday of every month
  • First and 15th day of every month
  • Tenth day of last month in each quarter
  • First Saturday or Sunday of every month
  • Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Operational customization

Operational customization can help simplify the control and scheduling of routine administrative tasks through the Administrator Web GUI. This can help allow administrators to set up migration and reclamation schedules to run during convenient server activity times. It also includes new script commands that can help allow the processing of server commands in parallel in a server script.

Multi-process reclamation and migration

The time needed to perform Tivoli Storage Manager reclamation and migration for sequential access storage pools may be reduced when multiple tape drives are configured for these operations. The number of multiple concurrent reclamation and migration processes may be configured for the same sequential-access storage pool to help utilize multiple drives, which is in addition to the concurrency that occurs when there are multiple sequential pools. The new concurrency is designed to occur on the volumes within a pool. Disk storage pools and optical storage pools that are formatted for sequential access can also help utilize the multiple drives.

The efficiency of reclamation for off-site volumes may be improved. Off-site volume reclamation may be completed in less time and the number of off-site volumes to be reclaimed may be controlled.

Disk storage pool enhancements

Tivoli Storage Manager (formerly ADSM) has supported two disk storage formats to use as storage pools for over 11 years: random-access (device class DISK) and sequential-access (device type FILE).

Capabilities that are added to device type FILE include support for storage pools to help span multiple file systems, parallel migration and reclamation, help the user achieve better performance by helping to minimize fragmentation, direct I/O on platforms that support direct I/O.

Both disk storage pool formats also have the capability of providing a space trigger for automatic allocation of storage pool space.

Collocation by group of nodes

The utilization of tapes may be improved when using collocation of a group of nodes whose data can be collocated together on sequential media. Collocation is designed to help reduce the number of volume mounts that are required when a large number of files are restored from a sequential-access storage pool by helping to minimize the number of tapes on which the data is stored. As tapes provide larger and larger capacity, they can be more efficiently used when data from multiple nodes is stored on them while still preserving the benefits of collocation. The efficiency of Tivoli Storage Manager internal data-transfer operations may be improved by transferring all nodes in the group together. This can result in less database scanning, with fewer tape passes and possibly reduced tape wear for file processing.

Management of storage devices

Device configuration on SAN-attached devices may be simpler. Tivoli Storage Manager adds dynamic mapping of SAN-attached devices on AIX, Linux, and Solaris, to the previous support on Windows™. The device serial number, manufacturer, and worldwide name are initially recorded for each storage device and when the device configuration changes, the Tivoli Storage Manager server rediscovers the devices and may automatically update the path definitions. For the list of supported HBAs and required driver levels by operating system, visit the following Web site and search on the key word TSMHBA

The preparation for use and removal of tapes from libraries is made simpler. The processes used to insert and remove tapes help eliminate the need to reply to many operator messages and help enable handling groups of tapes, where possible, versus one tape at a time. The changes may affect tape checkin, checkout, and label operations.

Broader support for Linux kernel levels

The device driver modules in the Tivoli Storage Manager Linux server have been restructured to help provide broader support for the rapidly changing kernel levels of Linux distributions. The Tivoli Storage Manager device driver, which is part of the Tivoli Storage Manager server and provides support for non-IBM tape devices and libraries, has now been designed to interface with the SCSI generic driver provided by the Linux distributions to help provide support for SCSI-attached tape and tape libraries. The Tivoli Storage Manager server has now been designed to operate on virtually any kernel level for which the SCSI generic driver is built helping to make, in essence, the Tivoli Storage Manager Server kernel independent.

IBM tape devices used by the Tivoli Storage Manager Linux server continue to require specific kernel levels. For more information and supported kernels, visit

    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr /tapedrivers.html

StorageTek ACSLS Library drive sharing

Tivoli Storage Manager helps to provide native support for drive sharing with STK ACSLS libraries. STK libraries, controlled by ACSLS, can be used with Tivoli Storage Manager to help provide drive sharing in the same library among multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers and also help to provide access to use those drives with LAN-free clients. This support offers an alternative to the existing requirement of using external library support and related software to provide these capabilities with Tivoli Storage Manager. Library managers, library clients, and LAN-free storage agents can be on AIX, Windows, and Solaris. Additionally, Library clients and LAN-free storage agents can be on Linux and HP-UX. The Library Managers on AIX, Windows, and Solaris can be used with a STK library controlled by Library Station to help enable LAN-free access to a Tivoli Storage Manager server on z/OS®.

Enhanced NDMP support

NDMP directory level backup is designed to provide greater flexibility in configuring backups to help reduce impacts to applications during backup and help enable improved backup and restore times. Backups of very large file systems can be segmented in multiple NDMP backups at a directory level and sent to multiple tape drives. Also added to the previously available EMC Celerra checkpoints backup support is the capability to backup snapshots for Network Appliance Snapshots and quota trees. Individual files may be restored from backups of directories and snapshots.

Data encryption

The encryption available for backup-archive data with Tivoli Storage Manager is upgraded from 56-bit DES to 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Encryption is now also available for applications using the Tivoli Storage Manager API, which includes the Tivoli Storage Manager Data Protection Clients for applications and databases. New support for automatic key management can help enable use of encryption with API applications, often without any changes to the applications.

Proxy node support

Backup time may be reduced, and backup and recovery operations can be federated with proxy-node support. Tivoli Storage Manager nodes, when authorized, can be directed to backup or restore data on behalf of another node. This can help enable concurrent operations from multiple nodes to store data to the same target node and filespace in parallel to help reduce backup and restore times in environments such as IBM GPFS and to do federated backups. Proxy-node can also be exploited to help provide support for cluster failover of Tivoli Storage Manager clients in cluster environments that are not already explicitly supported.

Client include-exclude usability improvements

The creation, updating, and validation of client include-exclude statements may be made simpler. A wizard in the Tivoli Storage Manager Client GUI is provided that can help allow users to visually select files and directories to include or exclude them from their backup. The wizard can help provide a means to modify and add simple include-exclude statements and patterns from the backup tree. A preview can be done using the client command line and GUI which will help show which objects can be backed up (or archived), based on the include-exclude statements created on the local client, and the include-exclude statements sent from the server client option set, without sending any data to the server.

File backup versions can be deleted

Files that have been backed up may be deleted by using a backup-archive client. There are situations where data is backed up but must be removed from the backup repository. Some examples of this include files that were backed up (intentionally or unintentionally) that contain sensitive data that needs to be removed, and files that are backed up but were later found to contain viruses.

Backup files normally locked from backup (Open File Support)

Open file and online image support on Windows now supports using a single drive. Open file support for backup and archive is available for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Online image backup support is available for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003. Tivoli Storage Manager can backup and archive open files, files locked from backup, and can also help provide a way to backup and archive groups of files, as they existed at a particular point in time. Users have the ability to run pre- and post-snapshot commands that can help them to quiesce applications prior to the start of the backup.

Open file support for backup includes the variations: incremental, incremental by date, selective, and incremental image. Additionally, open file support may work with both the sub-file and journal-based backup features in Windows systems.

Multiple session journal-based backup

Journal-based backup, which is available on Windows, can improve the overall backup time of incremental backups by eliminating the scan time of a file system for file selection. The journal-based backup function can be used to provide concurrent backup of different file systems. The existing journal-based backup capability may be enhanced to help allow multiple sessions to backup the different file systems by running multiple instances of the backup client or by using the Resource Utilization client option.

Activity log management

The management of the Tivoli Storage Manager server activity log may be more flexible. Administrators are provided with information that tells them how much space is in use by the activity log, and which can help them to manage the activity log based on its size. When the activity log maximum size is exceeded, the log is pruned starting with the oldest activity log records, until the activity log size no longer exceeds the configured maximum size allowed. Similarly, if the activity log occupies less space than the maximum allowed, no pruning is done. This log management option is in addition to the existing option to prune the log based on the age of the entries. The QUERY STATUS command is updated to display the management type and value of the setting for the activity log.

Improved performance for Windows, Linux, and Solaris clients

Tivoli Storage Manager clients on Windows, Linux, and Solaris can use the shared memory protocol to help obtain better performance in selected configurations. Shared memory protocol is used to help reduce the communications overhead in configurations where shared memory can be configured. These configurations are LAN-free storage agents, and server and client on the same machine.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management (HSM) enhancements

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management uses HSM, which is an important component of information life cycle management. Space Management helps free administrators and users from manual file system pruning tasks, and helps control the need for additional disk storage, by automatically and transparently migrating files via policy to nearline or offline storage.

Space Management client LAN-free support, previously available for AIX GPFS, is now added for Linux GPFS. Space Management clients for AIX GPFS and Linux GPFS support can be configured to have multiple nodes concurrently recall files. Using multiple nodes may result in an overall recall performance improvement. Partial file recalls, supported by AIX GPFS and Linux GPFS may help allow increased performance for recalling only partial file objects from the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Space Management is added for AIX JFS2 and was previously made available for AIX JFS, AIX GPFS, Linux GPFS, Solaris VxFS and HP-UX JFS.

Linux on AMD64 and EM64T

The Tivoli Storage Manager 32-bit Linux Intel™ client is supported on AMD64 and EM64T. This support is based on the claims of compatibility with existing 32-bit software by the AMD64 and EM64T vendors.

Tivoli Storage Manager on IBM eServer i5 and IBM eServer p5 logical partitions

Tivoli Storage Manager components are supported on IBM eServer i5 and IBM eServer p5 logical partitions when those partitions are running versions of AIX and Linux supported by Tivoli Storage Manager.

The user should verify that adapters, running in AIX 5L partitions on IBM eServer i5 servers, are utilizing I/O Adapters supported by AIX 5L.

Estimate Tivoli Storage Manager database reorganization space recovery

A tool is provided to estimate space to be recovered in Tivoli Storage Manager database reorganizations. A database reorganization may result in improved database performance. A database reorganization is typically done infrequently and would depend on the database size and the estimated amount of space to be recovered, and use patterns of the databases.

LAN-free enhancements

LAN-free clients' performance is improved and the CPU resource used by the client is reduced. Internal data handling optimization and shared memory protocol can result in better overall performance for LAN-free clients and other operations. Shared memory is added to Windows, Linux, and Solaris LAN-free clients.

Improved defaults

Many of the client and server defaults have been optimized for use in today's environments.

Backup-restore on VMware Virtual Machines

This support is available for Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive clients and Tivoli Storage Manager Data Protection component clients that run on and are supported on the operating systems that are virtual machines on VMware and connect via TCP/IP to a Tivoli Storage Manager server that is not running on VMware. Tivoli Storage Manager client support is virtually the same as that provided for systems on native machines. VMware unique problems are intended to be reported to VMware. This support is available for both VMware ESX and GSX versions.

The Tivoli Storage Manager server, storage agent (LAN-free clients), or client backup sets on removable media are not supported on VMware at this time.

Backup-restore of VMware virtual disk files

Backup of VMware virtual disk can be done from the VMware ESX console and from the Linux host operating system running VMware GSX using the TSM backup-archive client for Linux. The support for VMware GSX is designed to be available when running on a Linux distribution which is supported by the TSM Linux x86 client. Virtual disk backup is available for specific configurations. Virtual disk backups can be used to help provide machine recovery of a VMware environment and when used in conjunction with virtual machine backups can help provide file level restore capability.

Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery (SysBack) enhancements

Bare metal restore capability for AIX is provided using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery (SysBack), which can help allow integration with a Tivoli Storage Manager server. SysBack can help backup all or part of an AIX system. Tivoli Storage Manager SysBack can be used as a stand-alone product or in conjunction with a Tivoli Storage Manager server.

SysBack allows the user to choose from several types of backups, including full system (installation image), volume group, file system, file or directory, and raw logical volume. Backup types may be performed to tape, CD, DVD, or file on disk, or into a Tivoli Storage Manager server, depending on type. The full system (installation image) level backup may be used to help recover all or part of a system and can help restore that system to its exact state at the time that the backup was taken.

SysBack may help increase flexibility of bare machine recovery on AIX through:

  • An advanced feature that helps allow the user to designate a customized script to run during a system installation process just after the AIX RDA has run. It could be used to:
    • Import volume groups on certain RAID and Disk Subsystems that aren't normally visible to AIX and SysBack until the install process is completed. This can help provide a seamless recovery of all volume groups on the system by allowing the user to create a script that can help configure the user's specialized disk subsystems during the installation process rather than waiting until after the system is recovered.
    • Take control of advanced AIX installation routines to help customize system resources identically when using SysBack to perform assembly-line cloning operations.
  • An advanced feature that helps allow the user to suppress the execution of the AIX RDA program during a system installation process. This helps allow the user to:
    • Force the original ODM entries from the backup image onto the system. This may help with installation scenarios where resources have been configured in a particular device numbering order (for example, TTY RANs or disk numbering in a special order).
    • Recover only "detectable devices" to their defaults.

SysBack helps improve backups to CD and DVD devices by:

  • Adding support for the SysBack backup types to CD and DVD devices:
    • Full system (installation image) backups
    • Volume group backups
    • Filesystem backups
    • Logical volume backups
    • File/directory backups
  • Allowing the user to schedule backups to CD and DVD using the SysBack scheduling interface.
  • Helping to streamline the internals of the existing CD and DVD backup feature that uses the ISO structure/freeware utilities in order to help improve reliability.
  • Allowing the user to create backup images to DVD using the UDF filesystem structure in AIX 5.2. This helps allow the user to:
    • Reduce, and often eliminate, the large disk staging areas previously required to store full system backup images to CD/DVD
    • Stack multiple backup images on a single DVD, or span multiple DVDs, just like backups to tape

SysBack helps enhance the Tivoli Storage Manager integration feature by:

  • Adding Unprompted/No-prompt system installation support for backups stored in a Tivoli Storage Manager server
  • Providing an option to set the Tivoli Storage Manager network install device as the default device for system installation
  • Providing a status indicator to monitor progress of backup and restore functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager server

SysBack has enhanced restore functions with:

  • A two-column file list to help enable the restore of data to multiple destination locations
  • The ability to recover file attributes without restoring data (only at AIX 5.2+), including permissions, ownership, ACLs, and timestamps

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS UNIX® System Services (USS) Client and API

The Tivoli Storage Manager z/OS UNIX System Services (USS) backup-archive client is available on tape by ordering IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS USS Client and API (5698-USS). IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition helps extend its function rich data retention capability to help provide for data retention policies that help meet regulatory requirements for data retention and disposition. Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition's existing policy-based data management capabilities helps meet the needs of many regulated industries today through an open application programming interface (API).

Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition currently is designed to prevent the modification of data under Tivoli Storage Manager control and the deletion of that data by unauthorized agents (individual or program). Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention functionality helps extend this protection to help prevent the deletion by any agent prior to the expiration of the retention period. This helps assure that neither individuals nor programs can maliciously or accidentally delete data under Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention control.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention can provide integrated Data Retention Support for Network Appliance (NetApp) NearStore SnapLock. Tivoli Storage Manager file device class and storage pool support for NetApp NearStore storage devices is extended to exploit SnapLock capabilities for data retention and WORM (write once, read many) data permanence. Tivoli Storage Manager's storage pool management functions for data migration and reclamation are tightly integrated with SnapLock to help satisfy many worldwide regulatory compliance requirements. SnapLock support requires a Tivoli Storage Manager enabled version of NetApp Data ONTAP software. Contact your NetApp representative for access to this version of Data ONTAP.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail

Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail helps protect Lotus® Domino™ and Microsoft™ Exchange data within the Tivoli Storage Manager storage hierarchy. It supports online (hot) backup and helps exploit the backup-certified utilities and interfaces provided by Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange. This helps to maximize the protection of the data and the performance of backups and restores.

Data Protection (DP) for Domino usability may be improved by delivery of a Web GUI that helps provide administrators remote access to the DP for Domino client as well as integration with the backup-archive client Web GUI. The Web GUI is available for all platforms supported by DP for Domino except OS/400®.

In addition, the DP for Domino native GUI on Windows is enhanced to help improve memory management for better performance and scalability when displaying a list of backups available for restore.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases complements IBM Tivoli Storage Manager to help protect Oracle and Microsoft SQL data. It supports incremental and full backup to help provide online (hot) backup, and help exploit the backup certified utilities and interfaces provided by Oracle and Microsoft SQL, and uses the Tivoli Storage Manager storage hierarchy for data placement. This helps to maximize the protection of the data and the performance of the backups and restores, and helps to minimize storage hardware costs.

Data Protection for Oracle is now supported on the following platforms:

  • Oracle on HP-UX running on 64-bit Itanium processors
  • Oracle 9i RAC on AIX 5 with GPFS (first quarter 2004)
  • Oracle 10g (second quarter 2004)

The Data Protection for Informix™ client is not included in Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases V5.3. The next releases of IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) and Extended Parallel Server (XPS) are intended to be enabled to backup to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and will not require IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases. Customers using versions of IDS, XPS, and Red Brick™ available now, who want the Data Protection for Informix component, can obtain it by separately purchasing Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases V5.2.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Application Servers enhancements

Tivoli Storage Manager for Application Servers works in conjunction with Tivoli Storage Manager server to help safeguard the WebSphere® Application Server (WAS) environment, without disrupting the availability of the application. It offers reproducible backup and restore of WAS environments, including the WebSphere administration database, configuration data, and deployed application program files. Support is added for WAS 5.x on Linux/390.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware enhancements

Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware can help protect your mission-critical databases that require 24X7 availability, offering options to help implement high-efficiency backup and restore of business-critical applications, while virtually eliminating the backup-related performance impact on the production host, or reducing the restore window from hours to minutes. This is done by integrating IBM's TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server™ FlashCopy® function with Tivoli Storage Manager's database protection capabilities for Oracle, mySAP, and DB2®.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware can help provide improved recoverability for mySAP databases by supporting multiple backup generations on the ESS subsystem so that high-speed FlashCopy restores may be done from one of multiple backup levels.

Usability and performance enhancements are also provided for multiple-partition mySAP databases on DB2 EEE. Because separate configuration parameters per DB2 EEE partition are allowed, the user has the capability to select unique backup and restore parameters per partition. Also, when sending the backup images to Tivoli Storage Manager after a FlashCopy, the DB2 EEE partitions may now be backed up and restored in parallel.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware Data Protection for ESS for mySAP is integrated (and certified) with the SAP BRTools for Oracle database administration. This allows for consistent handling of backups and restores, using FlashCopy or tape storage.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Enterprise Resource Planning Data Protection for mySAP enhancements

Data Protection for mySAP is specifically optimized to help protect your vital mySAP data. It is endorsed by SAP through Certifications or Integration Assessments. An additional Administration Assistant helps maximize administrator productivity by helping to simplify administration, configuration, and monitoring of Data Protection for mySAP in production environments. This powerful solution helps enable administrators to manage backup and recovery of multiple SAP systems with large volumes of data more efficiently, consistently, and reliably often with a minimum impact on downtime.

  • Simulated backup/restore allows for "non-invasive" testing in production environments by simulation of either the database part or the TSM (plus network) part of the Data Protection for mySAP. Enhanced functionality is provided in the Administration Assistant to set up, execute, and collect results of tests like:
    • Backup/restore windows
    • Completeness of backup objects
    • Performance bottleneck analysis (separation of DB server and TSM server/network)
    • Configuration optimization
  • Reduced CPU load for backups in SAN environments (LAN-free) by exploitation of a new efficient data transfer mode between API and Storage Agent
  • Simplified Cloning of mySAP Oracle databases through redirected restore by enhancements in BACKFM
  • Exploitation of enhanced log file management by support for the new DB2 V8.2 archive API

Previously made available in V5.2.x

Operational reporting

Operational reporting uses automation and proactive notification to help reduce the effort and amount of time needed to keep IBM Tivoli Storage Manager running smoothly. Operational reporting helps automate many of the activities that Tivoli Storage Manager Administrators perform manually on a daily basis.

Operational reporting views a Tivoli Storage Manager server as being in one of two states: Running Smoothly or Needs Attention. Customizable rules, set by the administrator, determine which state the Tivoli Storage Manager server is in. The state information is automatically determined and sent to selected recipients in the subject line of an e-mail. The e-mail provides access to a customizable status report. If a server needs attention, the e-mail also describes any issues and provides recommendations on how to get Tivoli Storage Manager running smoothly again. Operational reporting provides the ability to automatically send an e-mail to notify of failed or missed scheduled operations. Operational reporting is highly customizable using template and extension files. These files leverage the power of custom SQL select statements and can be easily shared. Operational reporting also provides for periodic monitoring with notification options.

Operational reporting runs as a Windows Service, and is integrated in the Tivoli Storage Manager management console as a Microsoft Management Console snap-in. Operational reporting can report on a supported Tivoli Storage Manager server platform.

IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592

IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592, including 3592 Write Once, Read Many (WORM) functionality, is supported in the IBM TotalStorage UltraScalable Tape Library 3584. The 3592 is supported in mixed device configurations that may include LTO and DLT devices. The 3592 helps address storage requirements that are often filled by two types of drives: those that help provide fast access for data access and those that help provide high capacity for backups. The 3592 WORM functionality is designed to help support data retention needs and applications requiring an audit trail.

The 3592 requires the IBM tape device driver on the appropriate operating system. For more information, refer to

    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr /tapedrivers.html

IBM TotalStorage SAN File System

Tivoli Storage Manager supports the IBM TotalStorage SAN File System, helping to allow customers to put this powerful file system into production without fear of data loss. A Tivoli Storage Manager client running on AIX, Windows, Solaris, or Linux x86 may be used to process data stored in the IBM TotalStorage SAN File System. These clients help provide support for incremental, selective, and filelist backup, archive, restore, retrieve processing. Platform specific support for AIX clients includes virtual mount points, and file and directory attributes for file ownership and mode (for example, -rwxr--r--). Platform specific support for Windows clients includes file attributes and security properties. Support is also provided for LAN and LAN-free (SAN) backup and restores of SAN File System data.

Additional platform support

The Tivoli Storage Manager component Disaster Recovery Manager is now supported on Linux on pSeries®, xSeries®, zSeries®, and IBM eServer i5 logical partitions.

The Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client is supported on Novell Netware 6.5 and on Linux on Intel Itanium.

Tivoli Storage Manager provides cluster support for Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) for Windows.

MAC OS X useability is enhanced to help allow end users to backup and restore their own files without the need to be TSM administrators for their system. Also, an administrator command line interface is provided, which helps allow a direct administrative interface to the Tivoli Storage Manager server in place of using telnet, removing the restriction that required the system administrator to be logged on for scheduled events to occur.

Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery

Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery has been enhanced to help improve security with firewall support to specify which ports to utilize.

Users can select the directory for temporary work files used during backups and restores, which allows for the selection of file systems known to have adequate space and helps prevent backup and restore failures caused by out-of-space conditions.

File system permissions can be restored without restoring the data associated with those permissions for improved restore performance. Pull Backups are now supported to CD and DVDs; previously support was limited to creation of other media types. Pull Backups help automate the creation of bootable media for disaster recovery.

Pass thru for non-English languages is supported to input, process, and display non-English data without corruption.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management

Tivoli Storage Manager for Space managements adds platforms and file system support. Space Management is available on AIX GPFS, Linux Intel GPFS and HP-UX JFS.

Tivoli Data Warehouse

Tivoli Data Warehouse (TDW) helps enable the user to get cross-application reports from various Tivoli and customer applications that place data into TDW. This infrastructure helps enable a set of extract, transform, and load (ETL) utilities to extract data from Tivoli application data stores and move it to a central data warehouse database. Tivoli Storage Manager stores data into TDW to provide reports for data occupancy. These reports can be used to help answer the following questions.

  • Which clients are using the most server storage?

Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail

Data Protection (DP) for Domino adds platform support for Linux/390, Solaris 9, Windows 2003, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 on xSeries, i5/OS V5R3.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware

Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware, Data Protection for ESS for Databases, is enhanced to help provide support for Oracle Real Application Clusters. In addition, Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware clients include support for Incremental FlashCopy which helps reduce the amount of data moved to create the FlashCopy image by copying only the blocks that have changed since the last FlashCopy.

Support for FlashCopy Restore may provide a significant reduction in recovery time, replacing time consuming restores from tape with FlashCopy to the original source volumes from backup images retained in the ESS subsystem. Forward recovery of the databases may start immediately after completion of the FlashCopy restore (while the background copy is still in progress).

Data Protection for ESS for mySAP received SAP certification for the BC-BRS (splitint) interface.

Tivoli Storage Manager for ERP

Data Protection (DP) for mySAP is enhanced with support for:

  • Oracle Real Application Clusters on AIX with GPFS
  • Close integration with Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware to help maintain consistency of the BRTools' administrator interface and functions for backup and restore when using either tape or FlashCopy techniques

Performance improvements

Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management has been enhanced in Linux Intel GPFS with streaming support, which helps enable the HSM recall request to access the local data while the remaining data is being recalled.

Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management has been enhanced with partial File Recall for AIX GPFS 2.2 to help retrieve a segment of the file from within space managed file. Partial file recall is expected to be of greatest benefit where only small portions of very large files need to be read. Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management also adds LAN-free support for AIX GPFS 2.2 to help migrate and recall files using the SAN, and to help offload the LAN.

Tivoli Storage Manager Multi-Session Backup and Restore has been improved to help to better organize backup and restore operations with clients using multiple file systems to help improve backup and restore times in some environments by reducing tape thrashing on restore.

Serviceability

The problem determination guide documents the most frequently requested trace classes, test flags, and server SHOW commands by Tivoli Storage Manager service and support. Information on collecting problem information for communication to the services center is provided.

Product positioning

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help protect data. If a disk drive fails, or if the user accidentally deletes a file, Tivoli Storage Manager helps restore the lost data. If the entire operation is hit by a disaster, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help keep the data safe. Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help protect the data by copying active online data to offline and off-site storage, even from many 24x365 applications. But that's not all. If the data growth exceeds the storage capacity, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to be capable of effectively extending your capacity. Tivoli Storage Manager moves inactive data from online storage to less expensive offline or nearline storage. Tivoli Storage Manager can help automate and centralize all these functions, making reports and providing alerts for unusual events. Tivoli Storage Manager can help backup the data on any number of computers running any of more than a dozen different operating systems from notebooks to mainframes. Tivoli Storage Manager is a comprehensive data protection application.

Tivoli Storage Manager's capabilities

Backup-restore

Comprehensive data protection starts with data backups. Backups are a copy of the active online data stored on offline storage. Should an online storage device fail, a data error occur, or someone accidentally delete a file, the offline copy of that data can be copied back to online storage restored. Tivoli Storage Manager is recognized for its efficient backup methods. Tivoli Storage Manager uses multiple techniques to help reduce data transfer sizes to the minimum possible. These techniques help reduce the total time required for both data backups and, more importantly, data restores.

Disaster preparation and recovery

Comprehensive data protection also involves disaster preparation and recovery. Local copies of data can protect against discrete failures or errors in equipment, storage, or people. But disasters tend to happen to entire facilities, not just a portion of the equipment inside those facilities. Tivoli Storage Manager can help the user to prepare an additional copy of the active data for safekeeping at an off-site location, to provide that extra protection against disasters. Should a disaster strike and destroy the online storage and computers, the off-site copy of the active data can be restored to new computers to help get the user's business up and running quickly. In addition, "inactive" data is also stored off-site, if copystorage pools are used.

Archive-retrieve

Tivoli Storage Manager goes beyond just data backups to include data archiving. Until online storage is as inexpensive as offline storage, archiving inactive data is an effective way to help reduce your online storage costs. The cost of storing a gigabyte of data on online storage is typically much more expensive than the same gigabyte on offline storage. Some percentage of a user's data is inactive if it hasn't been accessed in weeks if not months. Does that inactive data need to remain on expensive online storage? Tivoli Storage Manager can help the user to move that inactive data to offline storage helping to free up online disk space for more important active data. Should the user find that the inactive data the user has been archived must be used again, Tivoli Storage Manager can help retrieve that data for the user.

HSM

Tivoli Storage Manager also includes a more automated version of archive called Hierarchical Storage Management or HSM. Like archiving, HSM helps remove data from online storage and puts it on less expensive offline storage. But unlike archive, HSM leaves a data-stub on online storage that shows the name of the removed file. With this stub, the user can easily access the offline data albeit much more slowly than if it were online. Tivoli Storage Manager's HSM capabilities are automated. Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to watch online data files to see how often they are used. If not opened for an administrator-specified length of time, they are removed to offline storage leaving only the data-stub behind. For many businesses with huge amounts of data, but not all of it needed online all the time, HSM may be one of the best ways to save on storage costs.

24X365 application protection

Some of today's most business-critical application programs must remain on and active 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. Fortunately, the manufacturers of some of these important programs understand the need for data protection. Some applications have a built-in capability to control external data protection applications. By directly controlling the time and method by which a data transfer to offline storage occurs, the application may continue operating with little or no interruption.

Tivoli Storage Manager's advantages

Management

Tivoli Storage Manager is a client-server application. One Tivoli Storage Manager server may handle hundreds of Tivoli Storage Manager clients. Tivoli Storage Manager's administration control is flexible via a hierarchy of administrators, each potentially designated with different management authority levels and specific domains defining user groups or applications. Multiple administrators may manage Tivoli Storage Manager simultaneously with data integrity. Multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers may be controlled from any Tivoli Storage Manager server or via a Web interface from any computer. Data restore requests may be initiated and controlled from the Tivoli Storage Manager client, which may help to greatly reduce workload for the administrator. The heart of the Tivoli Storage Manager server is an integrated relational database. This database catalogs the complete set of backup, archive, and HSM data for every Tivoli Storage Manager client. If the user tells Tivoli Storage Manager to do data backups every day, the database allows the restore of data from every day in the past for as far back as is specified. Like a time machine, Tivoli Storage Manager lets the user go back in time to previous versions of its data files. The user specifies the frequency of backups, where the copied data is held (magnetic disk storage pool, optical disk, and data tape), how long it is held there until migrating to the next storage type, and how long each version is kept before it is erased, and the space it used is made available for new data copies. The user also specifies how often data tapes should be tested for data integrity, what percentage of unused tape should remain before the tape's data is consolidated to another tape (freeing complete tapes for reuse), and how quickly data for specific users should be consolidated from multiple tapes to a minimum set of tapes to speed data restores.

Automation

All the management capabilities of Tivoli Storage Manager may be automated. Automation control is via a granular policy engine. This engine may be configured down to the individual file level to cover the who, what, where, when, and how of data transfers. Who has access to this file? What data should be transferred? Where should it be transferred to? When should Tivoli Storage Manager check to see if the file has changed and must be transferred again? How should the transfer occur? With Tivoli Storage Manager's policy-based automation engine configured and enabled, Tivoli Storage Manager really is virtually a set-it and forget-it application. Tivoli Storage Manager reports what it has done and helps alert the user to anything out of the ordinary.

Support

The best automation and management features for data protection mean little if they won't work with the computers the user has. Tivoli Storage Manager's client software supports over a dozen operating systems. Tivoli Storage Manager's server software runs on most major operating systems. Platforms vary from notebook computers all the way up to mainframe computers. A supported server can work with a supported client, all cross-platform: Solaris with Windows, AIX with Solaris, OS/390® with HP-UX, virtually any combination. Tivoli Storage Manager supports hundreds of storage devices including optical disk and tape. To make sure backups and restores can happen as efficiently as possible, Tivoli Storage Manager also supports multiple network types — dial-up, the Internet, WAN, LAN, and SAN. Each is maximized for the data bandwidth they are capable of reaching. Tivoli Storage Manager is also an open product. Its application programming interface (API) is available through the Tivoli Ready program.

Transfer

Even with the largest data pipes connecting servers and clients, Tivoli Storage Manager helps to minimize the amount of data going over those pipes. Because of Tivoli Storage Manager's integrated relational database, Tivoli Storage Manager is smart. Smart enough to know that if a file hasn't changed, it doesn't need to be backed up again — ever. Smart enough to know that if only a few bytes of a file have changed, only those bytes must be backed up again. For those data transfers that include many bytes, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to be optimized for disk-to-disk transfers. Instead of transferring data from the disk of a client computer, over the network, directly to a tape, Tivoli Storage Manager will instead make the first transfer to a disk storage pool. After an administrator-specified length of time (hours, days, or weeks), the data on that storage pool is migrated to other, less-expensive, offline storage devices. This technique helps allow more data to be moved faster, helping to reduce the total time of all data transfers both from and to clients. Disk-to-disk helps provide a data transfer technique better matched to the higher bandwidths of SANs and other gigabit networks. At the other end of the bandwidth spectrum, if a dial-up or Internet connection is dropped, Tivoli Storage Manager is smart enough to pick up where it left off. Instead of starting a transfer all over again when the connection is restored, Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to continue from where it previously ended.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is designed to help protect your data and IBM's service and support organization is a resource for Tivoli Storage Manager users. Recognized as one of the best service and support organizations in the world, IBM has been supporting Tivoli Storage Manager around the globe since 1999 and its previous versions, called ADSM, for more than a decade. Thousands of organizations are using Tivoli Storage Manager today with many more than a million computers protected. Tivoli Storage Manager is a comprehensive data protection application.

Planning information

Installability

Conversion

For the AIX, Solaris, Linux, Windows, and HP-UX servers, the Tivoli Storage Manager database is automatically upgraded during the installation of the Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 server. After this database upgrade, the user can no longer run a previous version of the servers with the database.

As a normal precaution, it is recommended that a full database backup be performed before installing the V5.3 code, as well as after completing the installation. Refer to the Installation Guide manuals for more detailed information.

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 to Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3, Tivoli Storage Manager clients and servers may be upgraded at different times. To help prevent disruption to the user's backup and archive activities during the migration, note the following:

  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 server, including V3.1-level functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V3.1 server on VM.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 server.
  • A Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 server.
  • Data that has been backed up from a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 client to a Tivoli Storage Manager server can be restored using a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 client, except for files backed up using 128-bit encryption.
  • Data that has been backed up from a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.1 or V5.2 client to a Tivoli Storage Manager server can be restored using a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 client.
  • Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 and V5.3 command line administrative clients can administer Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 and V5.3 servers, and the V3.1 VM server.

Additional migration information:

  • The following Tivoli Storage Manager server operating systems supported in V5.2 were not migrated to V5.3 and are not supported in V5.3:
    • OS/390 V2R10 and z/OS V1R1, V1R2, and V1R3
    • z/VM® (users may want to migrate their Tivoli Storage Manager z/VM servers to Linux)
    • HP-UX 11.0
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 2.1
    • SLES 7
    • OS/400 PASE (refer to OS/400 PASE migration suggestions below)
  • The following Tivoli Storage Manager SAN storage agent operating systems, supported in V5.2, were not migrated to V5.3 and are not supported in V5.3:
    • HP-UX 11.0
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 2.1
    • SLES 7
  • The following clients or client operating system levels were not migrated to V5.3. The V5.2 clients that support these operating systems can be used with the V5.3 Tivoli Storage Manager servers.
    • Macintosh 10.1, 10.2
    • Linux IA64
    • HP-UX 11.0
    • Linux Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1

The V5.2 clients can be downloaded from the Tivoli Storage Manager Web page at

Note: Until the Solaris HSM and Apple V5.3 clients become available, which is intended to be on or before September 30, 2005, the user may use the V5.2 clients with the Tivoli Storage Manager V5.3 server.

  • The Motif native GUI on UNIX clients was not migrated to V5.3. The Java GUI client should be used instead.
  • The following Data Protection software, supported in V5.2, was not migrated to V5.3 and is not supported in V5.3:
    • AIX 4.3.3
    • HP-UX 11

For Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail

    • MS Exchange 5

For Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware

    • ESS 1.5, 2.2
  • The Data Protection for Informix™ component of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases, which is supported in V5.2, was not migrated to V5.3 and is not supported in V5.3. The next release of IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS), if any, is intended to be enabled to backup to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and will not require IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases. Customers using versions of IDS, XPS, and Red Brick™ that are available now, who want the Data Protection for Informix component, can only obtain it by separately purchasing Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases V5.2.
  • OS/400 PASE migration suggestions
    1. If the user needs to configure the user's replacement Tivoli Storage Manager server with the same policy definitions as the user's Tivoli Storage Manager PASE server:

The existing server definitions can be transferred to the replacement server using the EXPORT/IMPORT facility. This can be done using EXPORT SERVER FILEDATA=NONE. This should transfer policy defintions, schedules, administrators, and nodes.

    2. If the user has data from Tivoli Storage Manager HSM clients or other HSM type data on the server:

The EXPORT/IMPORT facility for Tivoli Storage Manager should be used to move the space managed data from the Tivoli Storage Manager PASE server to the new replacement server. This can be done using the EXPORT SERVER or EXPORT NODE commands with FILEDATA=ALL or FILEDATA=SPACEMANAGED.

    3. If the user has backup data that can be easily recreated and does not need to be moved to the new server:

If the nature of the backup data currently kept on the Tivoli Storage Manager PASE server is such that it can be easily recreated by simply performing backups to the new server, then no data needs to be moved between servers. Configure the clients to reference the replacement server for their communication settings and have them back up to the replacement server. Initially, this will be a full selective backup and may require more time and network resource than usual. But after this initial backup to the replacement server, the client should again be primed to perform the regular progressive incremental processing during backup.

    4. If the user has backup data that needs to be moved to the new server because it cannot be easily recreated by simply backing up to the new server:

In this case, the backup data may have filespaces or file data that cannot be readily recreated by just backing up that client node to the new server. In this case, the backup data within the Tivoli Storage Manager server was being used or kept for more than just backup copies. In this case, the EXPORT/IMPORT facility for Tivoli Storage Manager should be used to move the backup data from the Tivoli Storage Manager PASE server to the new replacement server. This can be done using the EXPORT SERVER or EXPORT NODE commands. For the export processing, consideration will need to be given regarding whether to run the commands using FILEDATA=BACKUP or FILEDATA=BACKUPACTIVE.

    5. If the user has archive data on the server:

The EXPORT/IMPORT facility for Tivoli Storage Manager should be used to move the archive data from the Tivoli Storage Manager PASE server to the new replacement server. This can be done using the EXPORT SERVER or EXPORT NODE commands with FILEDATA=ALL or FILEDATA=ARCHIVE.

Based on the answers above, there are some other options to consider for the EXPORT/IMPORT processing. For instance, the user may consider using FILEDATA=ALLACTIVE. This will export all archive, active backup, and space managed data. Similarly, if the PASE server and replacement server are both configured and running at the same time and connected via the network, the EXPORT/IMPORT processing can be done using TCP/IP from one server to the other instead of having to perform the EXPORT to tape volumes and than read those tapes on the replacement server.

IBM Tivoli Enhanced Value-Based Pricing

IBM Tivoli software products are priced using IBM Tivoli's Enhanced Value-Based Pricing. The Enhanced Value-Based Pricing system is based upon the IBM Tivoli Environment-Managed Licensing Model, which uses a managed-environment approach — whereby price is determined by what is managed rather than the number and type of product components installed.

For example, all servers monitored with IBM Tivoli's monitoring product (IBM Tivoli Monitoring) require entitlements sufficient for those servers. Other IBM Tivoli products may manage clients, client devices, agents, network nodes, users, or other items, and are licensed and priced accordingly.

Unlike typical systems management licensing models that require entitlements of specific software components to specific systems, the IBM Tivoli Environment-Managed Licensing Model provides the customer flexibility to deploy its IBM Tivoli software products within its environment in a manner that can address and respond to the customer's evolving architecture. That is, as the architecture of a customer's environment changes, the customer's implementation of IBM Tivoli software can be altered, as needed, without affecting the customer's license requirements (as long as the customer does not exceed its entitlements to the software).

Under Enhanced Value-Based Pricing, licensing and pricing of server-oriented applications are determined based upon the server's use in the customer's environment. Typically, such applications are licensed and priced in a manner that corresponds to each installed and activated processor of the server managed by the IBM Tivoli application to help correlate price to value while offering a simple solution.

Where a server is physically partitioned, this approach is modified. This partitioning technique is the approach used with systems that have either multiple cards or multiple frames, each of which can be configured independently. For servers capable of physical partitioning (for example, IBM's pSeries Scalable POWERparallel Systems® servers, Sun Ultra servers, and HP Superdome servers), an entitlement is required for each processor in the physical partition being managed by the Tivoli application. For example, assume that a server has 24 processors installed in aggregate. If this server is not partitioned, entitlements are required for all 24 processors. If, however, it is physically partitioned into three partitions each containing eight processors, and Tivoli products were managing only one of the three partitions, then entitlements would be required for the eight processors on the physical partition managed by the IBM Tivoli application.

For servers with virtual or logical partitions, entitlements are required for all installed and activated processors on the server. For each IBM Tivoli application managing a clustered environment, licensing is based on the cumulative number of installed and activated processors on each server in the cluster. Where the cluster includes physically partitioned servers, the considerations described above concerning physically partitioned servers apply as well.

Enhanced Value-Based Pricing recognizes the convergence of RISC/UNIX and Microsoft Windows/Intel technologies, in order to help simplify the customers licensing requirements, and to provide a smoother, more scalable model. Pricing and licensing does not differentiate between non-zSeries server platforms or operating systems. For some products, this platform neutrality extends to zSeries and other host servers as well.

IBM Tivoli Enhanced Value-Based Pricing terminology definitions

Client device or client

A client device is a computer system that requests the execution of a set of commands, procedures, or applications from another computer system that is typically referred to as a server. Multiple client devices may share access to a common server. A client device generally has some processing capability or is programmable to allow a user to do work. Examples include, but are not limited to, notebook computers, desktop computers, desk side computers, technical workstations, appliances, personal digital assistants, automated teller machines, point-of-sale terminals, tills and cash registers, and KIOSKs.

Partitions

A server's resources (CPU, memory, I/O, interconnects and buses) may be divided according to the needs of the applications running on the server. This partitioning can be implemented with physical boundaries (Physical Partitions) or logical boundaries (Logical Partitions).

Physical Partitions are defined by a collection of processors dedicated to a workload and can be used with systems that have either multiple cards or multiple frames, each of which can be configured independently. In this method, the partitions are divided along hardware boundaries and processors, and the I/O boards, memory, and interconnects are not shared.

Logical Partitions are defined by software rather than hardware and allocate a pool of processing resources to a collection of workloads. These partitions, while separated by software boundaries, share hardware components and run in one or more Physical Partitions.

Port

A port is the physical connection between a device and the network.

Processor

A processor is a functional unit in a computer that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and an arithmetic and logic unit.

Server

A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more clients and/or other devices over a network. Examples include, but are not limited to, file servers, print servers, mail servers, database servers, application servers, and Web servers.

Standby or backup systems

For programs running or resident on backup machines, IBM defines three types of situations: cold, warm, and hot. In the cold and warm situations, a separate entitlement for the copy on the backup machine is normally not required and typically no additional charge applies. In a hot backup situation, the customer needs to acquire another license or entitlements sufficient for that server. All programs running in backup mode must be solely under the customer's control, even if running at another enterprise's location.

As a practice, the following are definitions and allowable actions concerning the copy of the program used for backup purposes:

Cold — A copy of the program may reside, for backup purposes, on a machine as long as the program is not started. There is no additional charge for this copy.

Warm — A copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine and is started, but is idling, and is not doing any work of any kind. There is no additional charge for this copy.

Hot — A copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine, is started, and is doing work. The customer must acquire a license or entitlements for this copy and there will generally be an additional charge.

Doing work, includes, for example, production, development, program maintenance, and testing. It also could include other activities such as mirroring of transactions, updating of files, synchronization of programs, data or other resources (for example, active linking with another machine, program, database, or other resource, and so on), or any activity or configurations that would allow an active hot switch or other synchronized switch over between programs, databases, or other resources to occur.

In the case of a program or system configuration that is designed to support a high availability environment by using various techniques (for example, duplexing, mirroring of files or transactions, maintaining a "heartbeat", active linking with another machine, program, database, or other resource), the program is considered to be doing work in the hot situation and a license or entitlement must be purchased.

Value Units

A Value Unit is a metric used to compute license quantities, is program specific, and is typically only used on products managing zSeries systems.

Passport Advantage

Through the Passport Advantage Agreement, customers may receive discounted pricing based on their total volume of eligible products, across all IBM brands, acquired worldwide. The volume is measured by determining the total "Passport Advantage points value" of the applicable acquisitions. Passport Advantage points are only used for calculating the entitled Passport Advantage discount.

To determine the required Tivoli product configuration under Passport Advantage, the Tivoli Enhanced Value-Based Pricing Model applies. The customer's environment is evaluated on a per-product basis.

Use the following two-step process to determine the total "Passport Advantage points value":

  1. Analyze the customer environment to determine the number of charge units for a product. The quantity of each product's part numbers to be ordered is determined by that analysis.
  2. Order the Passport Advantage part numbers. A Passport Advantage point value, which is the same worldwide for a specific part number regardless of where the order is placed, is assigned to each Tivoli product part number. The Passport Advantage point value for the applicable part number, multiplied by the quantity for that part number, will determine the Passport Advantage points for that Tivoli product part number. The sum of these Passport Advantage points determines the "Passport Advantage point value" of the applicable Tivoli product authorizations which then may be aggregated with the point value of other applicable Passport Advantage product acquisitions to determine the total "Passport Advantage points value".

The discounted pricing available through Passport Advantage is expressed in the form of Suggested Volume Prices (SVPs), which vary depending on the SVP level. Each SVP level is assigned a minimum total Passport Advantage point value, which must be achieved, in order to qualify for that SVP level.

Media packs and documentation packs do not carry Passport Advantage points and are not eligible for SVP discounting.

For additional information on Passport Advantage, refer to the following Web site

The following Passport Advantage part number categories may be orderable:

  • License and Software Maintenance 12 Months — this is the product authorization with maintenance to the first anniversary date.
  • Annual Software Maintenance Renewal — this is the maintenance renewal for one anniversary that applies when a customer renews their existing coverage period prior to the anniversary date at which it expires.
  • Software Maintenance Reinstatement 12 months — this is for customers who have allowed their Software Maintenance to expire, and later wish to reinstate their Software Maintenance.
  • Media packs — these are the physical media, such as CD-ROMs, that deliver the product's code.
  • Documentation packs — these contain printed documentation such as the User's Guide and Release Notes.

Pricing examples

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager: The following customer network applies to all of the examples to enable the reader to understand the pricing methodology when products manage something less than the entire environment. The customer's overall network environment includes:

Distributed servers — Site 1

Ordering information for Passport Advantage: Passport Advantage allows the user to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, which can simplify management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and related technical support) for the user's covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of the user's your Passport Advantage Agreement, will remain unchanged while the user's Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. New software purchases will initially include twelve full months of maintenance coverage. Maintenance in the second year (the first year of renewal) can be prorated to be coterminous with your common anniversary date. Thereafter, all Software Maintenance will renew at the common anniversary date and include twelve full months of maintenance.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.

The quantity to be specified for the Passport Advantage part numbers in the following table is per processor and per client. A client includes notebooks, desktops, and technical workstations. To order for Passport Advantage, specify the desired part number and quantity.

Software Maintenance

Software Maintenance is included with each product authorization acquired. Software Maintenance provides an easy and effective way by which the user has access, during the coverage period, to eligible new versions and releases and to remote technical support for the user's covered products.

The technical support included in Software Maintenance provides remote support during normal business hours in the user's country or location as well as access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems.

With Software Maintenance, the user receives the following technical support benefits:

  • Telephone access and/or electronic access via the Web to an IBM Customer Support Center.
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions and code-related problems.
  • Support during normal country business hours, namely prime shift hours, Monday through Friday, excluding national or statutory holidays.
  • Support for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems during non-prime shift hours, namely all hours outside normal country business hours including national and/or statutory holidays.
  • Two hour response time objective during prime shift for voice and electronic submission. The response objective for critical/emergency problems during offshift is also two hours.
  • Access to hints, tips, and frequently asked questions.
  • Access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Open Authorized Technical Caller list to submit problems to IBM Support Centers on the user's behalf. Open to any number of technical specialists within the user's IS organization. Each caller must be registered through the IBM problem submission Web site in order to submit problems. Problem submission is handled by the Site Technical Contact as listed on the Passport Advantage enrollment form.
  • eCare for Software is an initiative designed to enhance the user's electronic support experience by providing the following advantages:
    • Single view of IBM distributed software that includes easy/integrated access to the following information and functions:
    • Comprehensive electronic (via the Web) self-help capabilities available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Advanced search capabilities.
    • A single interface to the IBM problem submission/management system for IBM distributed software.

Software Maintenance renewals offer the user favorable pricing to continue the user coverage without interruption. Passport Advantage allows the user to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, which can simplify management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and for related technical support) for the user's covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of the user's your Passport Advantage Agreement, recurs on an annual basis while the user's Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.

Ordering information for non-Passport Advantage for 5698-USS

The Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS USS Client and API tape is only available by ordering 5698-USS, using the following ordering information and features numbers. Tivoli Storage Manager or Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition is a prerequisite.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS USS Client and API media is only shipped via customized offerings (that is, ServerPac, SystemPac®, CBPDO). CFSW configuration and order entry capability is intended to commence with CBPDO on December 14, 2004. For CBPDO orders, shipments are intended to begin one week after general availability.

Ordering z/OS through the Internet

ShopzSeries provides an easy way to plan and order user's z/OS ServerPac or CBPDO. It will analyze the user's current installation, determine the correct product migration, and present the user's new configuration based on z/OS. Additional products can also be added to the user's order (including determination of whether all product requisites are satisfied). ShopzSeries is available in the U.S. and several countries in Europe. In countries where ShopzSeries is not available yet, contact an IBM representative (or IBM Business Partner) to handle your order via the traditional IBM ordering process. For more details and availability, visit the ShopzSeries Web site at
