| Overview |
With IBM POWER5 servers that are designed to exploit advanced virtualization features and enable Capacity on Demand (CoD) temporary processor activations, you can rapidly react to changing business requirements and maintain end-user service level agreements for key applications, while potentially reducing the total cost of acquisition and ownership.
To support this capability, On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) for AIX® 5L software and
selected IBM pSeries®
software products is available. This enables you to purchase daily license entitlements for AIX 5L
and selected pSeries license programs. These daily license entitlements allow clients who use
temporary processor activations via CoD offerings for both POWER4 and POWER5 servers to have a
choice to purchase license entitlements for only the amount of processor days purchased or used, or
to purchase a full license of AIX 5L or the selected pSeries licensed programs.
On/Off CoD can help you reduce the total cost of ownership of pSeries servers while providing the maximum flexibility for IT organizations to meet the dynamic changes encountered by an On Demand Business. The daily license entitlements allow you to remain compliant with the IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) for AIX 5L and the selected pSeries licensed programs when using temporary processor activations.
This announcement fulfills IBM's Statement of Direction issued October 15, 2004. Refer to
Software Announcement
204-249
, dated October 15, 2004.

| Description |
Daily On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software charges can now be used with the IBM On/Off CoD server offerings. In addition to the On/Off CoD server offering, which allows you to pay a fee to enable and use temporary server capacity, you can now pay for AIX 5L and selected additional pSeries software on a per-day basis to help you through your peak business periods.
A key element of IBM's On Demand Business strategy is to enable clients to dynamically change their available server capacity. IBM's On/Off CoD server offering allows you to dynamically increase and decrease server capacity based on changing workload demands. As previously announced, IBM's On/Off CoD hardware offering is available on IBM's latest eServers, including select zSeries®, pSeries, and iSeries.
Daily On/Off CoD software charges apply only to eligible software products. All eligible On/Off CoD software products are licensed under the IPLA. IPLA generally describes a category of software products with a license fee at the time of purchase and an annual maintenance charge, known as Software Maintenance and Subscription (SWMA). The daily On/Off CoD charges include both license fee and SWMA charges associated with a particular software product.
For pSeries, daily On/Off CoD software charges are measured in processor days for each pSeries software product that is eligible for daily On/Off CoD charges. Per-processor-day charges for software are applied based on the number of processors on which the applicable licensed programs will be run.
For example, if the On/Off CoD server offering is activated on a pSeries server and one temporary engine is enabled for one day, the processor-day charge per product is applied for each eligible software product on that particular server. Likewise, if two temporary engines are enabled for 10 days, the processor-day price per product is multiplied by 20 and applied for each eligible software product on that particular server.
Daily On/Off CoD software charges for AIX 5L are available only on POWER5 systems.
Customers must complete and sign contract Z125-6907, Amendment for iSeries and pSeries Software On/Off Capacity on Demand. Customers must have all licensing on the base configuration of the On/Off CoD machine in compliance with their respective license agreements.
Information pertaining to activation of On/Off CoD servers can be found in the following pSeries announcements:
- Hardware Announcement 103-129 , dated May 6, 2003, entitled "New IBM pSeries 650 Enhancements Offer Greater Flexibility with Capacity Upgrade on Demand and Faster Performance Using RIO-2 Adapters"
