Description

WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms creates, deploys, executes, and manages data mapping between EDI formats and record-oriented application data formats. It supports the mandatory requirements for EDI trading partner exchanges such as auditing and data content validation, as well as providing a depth of function. For example, trading partner profiles, enveloping, syntactic validation, and EDI functional acknowledgement enables a highly optimized EDI information exchange.

The data-mapping application converts from and into EDI standard and proprietary nonstandard formats including, but not limited to:

  • ANSI X12
  • UN/EDIFACT
  • UCS

WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms supports the subsets of the published ANSI X12 and UN/EDIFACT standards, as interpreted the following industries:

  • Retail
  • Transformation
  • Electronics
  • Automotive
  • Petroleum
  • Health care
  • Insurance
  • Manufacturing

WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms can operate as a stand-alone EDI system or it can be integrated with other enterprise applications, either through its WebSphere MQ-based interface or through its own API. A multiprocessing adapter facilitates integration with WebSphere MQ. It allows you to process user messages from one or more WebSphere MQ queues simultaneously using multi-processor hardware.

In the context of a typical enterprise architecture, WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms fulfills the role of an EDI broker that performs the special EDI validation, transformation, and exchange functions and propagates the resulting transformed information either internally or externally.

Internal propagation of transformed information may be through a process broker such as WebSphere Business Integration Server, through a message broker such as WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker, direct to the business applications, or by any combination of these, depending on the needs of the enterprise.

External propagations of transformed information or receipt of information can be through a specialized and dedicated Value Added Network (VAN) gateway, directly to a trading partner, or through any combination of these, depending on the nature of the relationship that the enterprise holds with its partner community. WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms is sufficiently flexible in its configuration that it can interoperate with a wide range of such solutions. This is of particular advantage where an enterprise may already have an established VAN provider.

The primary enhancements to WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms V3.2.1 are:

  • Any-to-any mapping allows direct mapping from any supported source document (EDI, XML, or application data format) to any supported target format (EDI, XML, or application data format). This function allows you to create many new types of mapping combinations such as EDI to EDI, XML to EDI, and EDI to XML. This mapping enhancement is supported by an improved graphical representation of the XML data in the WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms Client tool.
  • XML DTD and Schema import enables direct import from a file and the ability to display the DTD or Schema for mapping purposes in a similar way to the approach used by WebSphere Data Interchange for importing EDI-standard transactions. Allowing the import of user-defined DTD or Schema formats enables WebSphere Data Interchange to support relevant DTDs or Schemas.
  • WebSphere MQ message queuing support enables WebSphere Data Interchange to be driven by WebSphere MQ messages to give additional integration with WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker by allowing it to control the operation of WebSphere Data Interchange and to cooperate in transforming EDI messages. This facility introduces a WebSphere MQ queue profile definition to associate logical destination names with real WebSphere MQ queues. The Message Content Descriptor profile facilitates interaction with WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker.
  • Industry-leading support for health care standards HIPAA and HL7:

IBM created the Support Pack for HIPAA for WebSphere Data Interchange V3.2, which supports the HIPAA Addenda 1 (4010A1) message format.

The Support Pack for HIPAA enables customers to send and receive HIPAA transactions. It validates the inbound or outbound transmission and then transforms the transaction from X12 to XML. The Support Pack for HIPAA includes collaborations for HIPAA transactions that enable integration with customers' existing back-end data-processing systems using the IBM WebSphere InterChange Server V4.2.2 and the WebSphere Business Integration Collaborations for HIPAA Transactions V1.1.1. The WebSphere InterChange Server provides a distributed infrastructure to process and route business information among disparate applications in the enterprise environment.

Additional information can be found at

  • Advanced conditional and special mapping function can be exploited in mapping scenarios to address the most complex needs of standards translation. Examples of this capability are the ability to call translation maps in a hierarchical manner, conditionally switch between translation maps, sequential chaining of translation maps, and support for hierarchical looping over data content structures.
  • Improved and increased import/export capabilities with additional objects.
  • Enhanced mapping vocabulary and command set.
  • X12 Interchange Acknowledgment (TA1) Support for use with Data Transformation mappings. Other functional enhancements to the Data Transformation translation engine extend to a new C and C++ user exit interface, target-based mapping, Transaction Store support for EDI data, SAP Status Reporting, and WDI Optional Records function.

The addition of these items brings WebSphere Data Interchange for Multiplatforms V3.2.1 data transformation mapping function closer in line with the function of the traditional Send and Receive mapping of the IBM Data Interchange for z/OS® product.

Product positioning

WebSphere Data Interchange V3.2.1 provides advanced translation, validation, and batched information exchange capabilities for EDI standards.

WebSphere Data Interchange electronically translates EDI format data, such as invoices, purchase orders, and billing forms for exchange with trading partners. It supports industry implementations of the ANSI X12, EDIFACT, VICS, UCS, and RAIL standards. Translation can take place between any combination of EDI, XML, or record-oriented application data format.

WebSphere Data Interchange provides advanced data validation and standards compliance functions that allow the EDI functional acknowledgements, defined by some EDI standards, to be generated in response to inconsistencies in the data content. WebSphere Data Interchange can be configured to both construct and deconstruct envelopes of EDI format data that contain batches of related EDI items such as invoices or purchase orders. The Transaction Store Service and Event Logging capability allows for delayed enveloping of translated EDI data, delayed translation of enveloped EDI data, and the tracking of messages through the system.

WebSphere Data Interchange provides a dedicated GUI mapping tool, the WebSphere Data Interchange Client, that is optimized to build EDI, XML, and record-oriented application data format transformations. The WebSphere Data Interchange Client allows direct import of EDI standards definitions, record-oriented application data structures, and industry-standard or user-defined XML Schemas and DTDs for mapping and translation. The WebSphere Data Interchange Client provides configuration and administrative capabilities that allow the definition of the construction and deconstruction envelopes.

WebSphere Data Interchange supports integration with WebSphere MQ, enabling interoperation with a wide range of enterprise applications, business process engines (such as the WebSphere Business Integration), information brokers (such as WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker), and ERP systems (such as SAP R3).

WebSphere Data Interchange provides for communication with trading partners via both VANs and Internet B2B gateways by providing an easy-to-use, configurable interface that enables connection to leading VAN and Internet gateways. The WebSphere Business Integration Connect offerings provide capabilities such as AS1 and AS2 support and the IBM e-business Hosting™ VAN gateway, using Expedite, are two examples of supported gateways from IBM.

In the context of a typical enterprise architecture, WebSphere Data Interchange fulfills the role of an EDI Broker that performs the spec EDI validation, transformation, and exchange functions and propagates the resulting transformed information either internally or externally. Internal propagation of transformed information may be via a message broker, a process broker, direct to the business applications, or by combination of these, depending on the needs of enterprise. External propagation of transformed information or receipt of information may be via a specialized dedicated VAN gateway, an Internet B2B gateway directly to a trading partner, or by any combination of these interface depending on the nature of the trading relationship that the enterprise holds with its trading partners.

WebSphere Business Integration is a family of cross-industry and industry-vertical offerings that offers a full range of capabilities. It addresses common business goals such as reducing costs, improving operational performance, and increasing organizational agility. The WebSphere Business Integration offerings comprise industry-leading components, including industry-specific collaborations that represent the common practices and benchmark performance of many industry verticals. Such industry offerings often have the requirement to support the prevalent EDI standard grammar within that industry; in some industries, a specific optimized solution for that grammar is required. However, where an industry has adopted an implementation within an international standard, such as ANSI X12 or EDIFACT, WebSphere Data Interchange is packaged as a component of the WebSphere Business Integration offering for that industry.
