| Description |
CICS Transaction Gateway (CICS TG) for Multiplatforms V6.0
CICS TG enables you to use your CICS applications in comprehensive and sophisticated J2EE and Web services solutions hosted on powerful application servers, such as WebSphere Application Server.
Using Java servlets and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) components, CICS TG can use the external call interface (ECI) and external presentation interface (EPI) to allow access to CICS COMMAREA-based applications and 3270 datastream-based transactions. Besides the Java language, CICS TG also supports COBOL, C, C++ and Microsoft Visual Basic languages for local applications. With CICS TG for Multiplatforms V6.0, you also have a comprehensive range of networking options to connect to your CICS systems, including native TCP/IP, TCP62, and SNA LU 6.2.
CICS TG provides comprehensive security features including support for JSSE SSL encryption between itself and the Java application. To facilitate the management of user IDs and passwords, the external security interface (ESI) enables customer applications to verify user passwords, as well as process expired passwords.
CICS TG for Multiplatforms V6.0 includes the following enhancements:
Performance
Improved runtime performance: The internal trace mechanism now improves the runtime performance of the CICS TG. The enhancement is in the Client daemon and is applicable in all circumstances. It is effective immediately on installation of the CICS TG, with no manual intervention.
Improved performance and scalability on Linux: Support for the Native Posix Thread Library (NPTL) threading model is provided for the RHEL V3 and SLES 9 Linux operating systems. NPTL is a new high-performance multi-threading capability that improves performance and scalability for multi-threaded applications.
Systems management
Normal shutdown: This is a new method of shutting down the Gateway daemon in a controlled manner, as opposed to using an immediate shutdown. A normal shutdown of the Gateway daemon ensures that all in-flight transactions and extended logical units of work are allowed to complete before shutdown occurs.
Administration tool: This command-based systems administration tool provides improved usability and the added capability of invoking shutdown processing. It will help System Administrators have better control of the Gateway daemon.
Ability to run as a daemon process in UNIX® and Linux environments: In addition to the existing service support on Windows, a new services function has been introduced that uses standard UNIX or Linux mechanisms to start and stop the gateway, saving time and requiring less user intervention.
APPC support for Linux on zSeries®:
This feature enables support for IBM Communications Server for Linux on IBM zSeries, providing an SNA
interface to CICS. It will assist System Administrators and Architects, particularly if
centralizing skills and investments on the zSeries platform. It allows customers to take advantage
of the virtualization capabilities of Linux on zSeries.
Management of Log files: This feature enables more control over the management of the Gateway daemon log files and is useful when a permanent, organized record is required for auditing of the CICS TG. It is now possible to specify a particular destination for both informational messages and also warning/error messages. The number and size of log files to be retained can also be configured. This enables management of the log files with significantly less administrative intervention.
Security
Control of SSL cipher suite: There is a new configuration option with the JSSE support for SSL connection to the Gateway daemon that allows the SSL cipher suite to be specified. This enables fine tuned control of the algorithms used for encryption of network data sent to the Gateway.
Ease of use
Simplified installation and migration: Install Shield Multiplatform (ISMP) is now provided as the installer on all platforms. This simplifies the process of installation and migration on the UNIX and Linux platforms using an industry standard installation program. This allows quick and easy customization of the installation. ISMP can be run as a GUI, Command Line console or silent install with no user interface.
Redesigned and searchable Eclipse based information center: IBM information center is a new way of viewing online product documentation. It can be installed individually on users client workstations, on a dedicated server, or viewed online from ibm.com. This new Eclipse based information center provides an improved user interface, which is standard across most new IBM software products. It provides enhanced search techniques, including the ability to search all installed Eclipse based IBM information centers in one search.
Java
J2EE Connector Architecture 1.5 Support: JCA 1.5 is part of the J2EE 1.4 specification. CICS TG V6.0 Resource Adapters will now work in a JCA 1.5 Application Server. The new JCA 1.5 Resource Adapters fully support WebSphere Application Server V6.0. JCA resource adapters provide significant benefits for developers of composite CICS and WebSphere applications in terms of both application development and improved qualities of service in the system-operating environment. The underlying infrastructure automatically provides the management of connections, security and transactions.
CICS Universal Client for Multiplatforms V6.0
CICS Universal Client V6.0 provides simple and low-cost integration with CICS from Microsoft Windows and Linux on Intel and zSeries systems. It provides access from a single user workstation to the tried and trusted transactional capabilities of IBM CICS Transaction Servers and TXSeries CICS servers.
CICS Universal Client communicates with CICS servers through ECI, EPI and ESI. ECI helps optimize client and server operation and improve programmer flexibility by keeping business logic on the server and presentation logic on the client. EPI enables the client to programmatically interact with 3270 data-stream-based transactions. There are also 3270 emulation capabilities that enable a workstation to function as a 3270 display or printer for CICS applications. ESI enables appropriate user applications to verify that a password corresponds to an existing user ID, and allows passwords to be changed to facilitate better user ID and password management.
Programming interfaces are provided in C/C++, COM (for VB or VB Script support), and COBOL. It provides TCP/IP, TCP62, and SNA LU6.2 networking options to connect to your CICS systems.
Single user licences of CICS Universal Client should be considered by anybody looking to distribute single-user, low-cost CICS access across the enterprise.
CICS Universal Client V6.0 provides the following enhancements over previous versions.
Performance
Improved runtime trace performance: The internal trace mechanism has been significantly enhanced to improve the runtime performance of the CICS TG enhancement is in the Client daemon and is applicable in all circumstances. It is effective immediately on installation of the CICS Universal Client, with no manual intervention.
Improved performance and scalability on Linux: Support for the Native Posix Thread Library (NPTL) threading model is provided for the RHEL V3 and SLES 9 Linux operating systems. NPTL is a new high-performance multi-threading capability that provides improved performance and scalability for multi-threaded applications.
Systems Management
APPC support for Linux on zSeries: This feature enables support for IBM Communications Server for Linux on zSeries, providing an SNA interface to CICS. It will assist System Administrators and Architects, particularly if centralizing skills and investments on the zSeries platform. It allows customers to take advantage of the virtualization capabilities of Linux on zSeries.
Ease of use
Simplified installation and migration: Install Shield Multiplatform (ISMP) is now provided as the installer on all platforms. This simplifies the process of installation and migration on the Linux platforms by using an industry standard installation program. These have been replaced with a single executable file.
Compatibility: The following compatibility statements apply to either the CICS TG for Multiplatforms V6.0, CICS Universal Client V6.0, or both.
SSL
CICS TG V6.0 has removed support for SSLight and SystemSSL.
SSL support has been standardized around JSSE, in line with industry trends. Migration from SSLight and SystemSSL to JSSE is required.
COM Libraries
Support for out-of-process COM libraries is discontinued. Users should migrate to use in-process libraries. This will provide better performance.
Applets
Support for the HTTP, HTTPS, and Java 1.1 enabled browsers is removed. Users are encouraged to move applet based solution to a servlet or J2EE solution. For migration purposes browsers at the Java 1.4.2 level are supported. Applet support may be fully removed in a future release.
CICS TG V3 Migration Utility
The migration utility associated with CICS TG V3.0 migration has been removed. Migration is no longer supported from V3.0, or earlier versions.
CICS TG base classes
CICS TG V6 will continue to support the following features of the CICS TG base classes
- Generic replies for asynchronous ECI requests
- Non-validated message qualifiers for asynchronous ECI requests
- Non-validated units-of-work for ECI requests.
The recommended solution is to disable generic replies for asynchronous ECI requests, and to validate all units-of work and message qualifiers, as these features may be enforced in a future release of the CICS TG
The CICS TG base classes (JavaGateway, ECIRequest, EPIRequest) are supported within the Web container in WebSphere Application Server V6 for compatibility reasons, with the following limitations:
- The base classes (JavaGateway, ECIRequest, ESIRequest) are currently supported for compatibility reasons, but support might be removed in a future release.
- All ECI requests must be non-transactional. This means that only the field ECI_NO_EXTEND is supported on the ECIRequest constructor as the Extend_Mode
- All ECI requests must be synchronous, that is only the fields ECI_SYNC or ECI_SYNC_TPN are supported as the call types.
- The EPIRequest class is not supported with WebSphere Application Server. Use the EPI support classes (Terminal, Screen, and Field) instead.
Terminal Servlet
Support for the Terminal Servlet application is included for compatibility, but it is recommended that users migrate to using either a CICS 3270 bridge solution, or to an IBM Host Integration solution because support may be removed in a future release of the CICS TG.
Network Provider Interface (NPI)
NPI is no longer supported, and you are no longer allowed to use the Windows credentials for CICS security.
