Overview
IBM Application Hosting EDI Services Expedite Base/MVS software is being enhanced to support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) TCP/IP connectivity to IBM Application Hosting EDI Services Information Exchange. This capability lets IBM Application Hosting EDI Services clients using the z/OS® V1.4 operating system, who want to take advantage of the value-added features provided by an Expedite communication client, connect to Information Exchange via the Internet through their Internet service provider using the new SSL TCP/IP connectivity. Communication between the Expedite client and the Information Exchange service is performed using Client X.509 Certificate authenticated SSL for enhanced security.
For added flexibility, IBM Application Hosting EDI Services Expedite Base/MVS V4.6 now
supports communication with Information Exchange using Systems Network Architecture (SNA), TCP/IP,
or Secure Sockets Layer TCP/IP. You can choose the communications protocol most appropriate for
your needs.

Description
IBM Application Hosting EDI Services is a worldwide leader in delivering e-commerce documents, such as purchase orders and bills of lading, between trading partners. IBM Application Hosting EDI Services is designed to provide you with the products, services, solutions, and training to enable electronic business transactions across the supply chain, and build a solid foundation for business-to-business (B2B) trading networks. This managed electronic transaction service is designed to provide electronic data interchange (EDI) services via an intranet, an extranet, or the Internet; and interconnects with other EDI service providers and WebSphere® MQ business applications.
The Information Exchange international mailbox service is the heart of IBM's EDI Services. Clients can send and receive information of almost any kind, from standard-format EDI transactions to XML or free-format documents.
IBM Application Hosting EDI Services Expedite clients who want to take advantage of the features provided by an Expedite communication client can now connect to Information Exchange via the Internet through their Internet service provider using the new SSL TCP/IP connectivity. Using an Expedite program and Information Exchange, IBM Application Hosting EDI Services Expedite allows you to take advantage of the following value-added features when exchanging documents with your trading partners:
- International reach
- Distribution list support
- Alias addressing
- Archive capability
- Audit capability
- Selective message receive
- Flexible message retention period
Expedite Base/MVS V4.6 allows connection to Information Exchange via a security-rich front end, and supports SSL for authentication and encryption. SSL provides encryption of the datastream (messages), plus authentication and encryption of the user ID and password. A certificate can be obtained from the following Web site for SSL TCP/IP
The Expedite SSL support encompasses both the SSL V3 protocol and the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards track replacement, TLS
V1. TLS, as specified in Request for Comment 2246 (RFC2246), is an
extension to SSL V3. The Expedite programs support both SSL V3 and TLS
V1.

Product positioning
The enhancement to IBM Application Hosting EDI Services Expedite Base/MVS provides a migration path for clients from SNA connectivity to a security-rich IP solution that takes advantage of the value-added features of an Expedite client.
Clients who wish to continue using a TCP/IP security-rich network
connection instead of the Internet for connectivity can also take
advantage of the additional security features provided by SSL.

Hardware requirements
-
An IBM
zSeries® server capable of running z/OS® V1.4.
- Additional hardware may be required to connect to Information Exchange. Contact your Information Exchange network provider.
- DASD requirements will vary depending on how the Expedite Base/MVS product is used. (For example, the recovery level chosen, if trace files are required.)
Software requirements
- z/OS V1.4 with APAR PQ85252.
-
The following items are base elements of z/OS V1.4 used by Expedite Base/MVS:
- Communications Server: Provides both TCP/IP and SNA support. Expedite Base/MVS uses one or the other to communicate with Information Exchange.
- Cryptographic Services: Expedite Base/MVS uses facilities of this base element to support SSL communications. Component System Secure Sockets Layer is used for security-enhanced communications as well as certificate management.
- Language Environment® (LE): Expedite Base/MVS requires the run-time environment provided by LE.
- For SSL TCP/IP communications, a certificate is required and can be obtained from the following Web site
Compatibility: The new Expedite release has the same functional compatibility as the previous releases. Clients using z/OS V1.3 or lower must use Expedite Base/MVS V4.5. They cannot take advantage of the SSL features provided by Expedite Base/MVS V4.6.
Limitations: The new Expedite release has been tested only in the environment described in the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections. IBM does not guarantee to support this release in any other environment.
