Connectivity is critical in establishing an integrated, enterprise-wide system from which you can extract information from disparate sources, such as different packaged and legacy applications, technologies, and mainframe systems.
The WebSphere Business Integration Adapters help you address connectivity with one consistent approach. All adapters run on the same common framework, ensuring that they can be reused with different brokers as your integration needs change over time. The common framework also allows greater speed and ease of adapter deployment, requiring less skill to install a broad range of adapters.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapters further extend the IBM business integration portfolio. In addition to helping you integrate your systems, adapters can make your business more flexible. Because the adapters can run with multiple servers and brokers, you can deploy one adapter into different integration scenarios, simplifying your overall architecture.

Enhanced component
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework v2.6
The Adapter Framework is the common runtime environment that is a prerequisite for all WebSphere Business Integration Adapters and for the Adapter Development Kit. The framework includes a combination of run-time libraries and operational administrative tools. The run-time libraries are deployable on all supported operating systems. The operational administrative tools are supported on Microsoft™ Windows platforms.
New in this release, function in the WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework has been changed and enhanced. Changes in this release include:
- Support for WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation. With this enhancement, the Adapter Framework and most of the WebSphere Business Integration Adapters have been enabled to work with Server Foundation. This includes the adapters in this release, as well as many of the other adapters in the WebSphere Business Integration Adapter portfolio. Refer to the Software requirements section for details.
- The adapter framework, and an initial subset of adapters, now support Linux and new versions of Solaris and Windows. Refer to the Software requirements section for details.
- Framework support for Tivoli® Monitoring for Transaction Performance (TMTP) has been added. Instrumentation that conforms to the Application Response Measurement (ARM) standard, which provides a way to manage and measure business transactions, has been added to the adapter framework. Simple calls to the ARM application programming interface have been embedded within the adapter runtime, and these calls allow the decomposition of transaction metrics via a TMTP console. For adapter runtime, these metrics measure transaction performance for a business object SERVICE REQUEST and a business object EVENT DELIVERY.
- Framework support for Common Event Infrastructure (CEI) has been added. CEI uses the event model defined in the IBM Autonomic Common Base Event (CBE) for its event management functions. CBE is a standard being defined for use by applications in generating events. Adapter Runtime will generate the events for the starting/stopping of an adapter, the timeout of an adapter, or the processing of a business object. The business object key data along with the CBE standard required data will be stored within CEI databases and retrievable by CEI consumer applications for these events.
- Performance improvements also have been made to the adapter framework. Refer to the release notes for details.

Also new in this release, the Adapter Framework will be supporting a new version of Java™ Runtime
Environment (JRE). Because of the changes that supporting this new JRE requires, customers will
have the option of
- Remaining on WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework v2.4 and continuing to run their existing adapters, or
- Customers can make startup script changes to their adapters and upgrade to this new version of the adapter framework to take advantage of the new features listed above.

- As of this release, the Client Agent Parallelism (CAP) feature will be allowed to deprecate.
Enhanced application and technology adapters
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for e-Mail V5.4
This adapter supports enhanced e-mail server reconnection while polling mailboxes. This adapter enables an integration broker to exchange business objects with a variety of applications and:
- Sends e-mail messages containing business objects or files in response to collaboration requests
- Checks the mailboxes on mail servers for messages, converts the messages to business objects, and posts the business objects to the broker
- Uses swappable data handlers that can be used to customize the format message attachments
- New in this release, the e-mail adapter supports the RFC822 specification for syntax of internet mail addresses
- This adapter also has been enhanced to set the "Reply To" address or addresses e-Mail header to the sender of the mail
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for JDBC v2.6
This adapter enables IBM servers and brokers to exchange business objects with an application built on any database supported by a JDBC driver. The product also supports stored procedure calls at each object level. Several advanced configuration properties allow the connector to communicate with databases that include DB2, Sybase, and Informix™ for capabilities extending beyond the JDBC 2.0 standard. Any driver that fully adheres to the standard can be used.
There are several new enhancements to this adapter:
- Support for caching of prepared statements at the Business Object Level. Caching can be enabled selectively for parent and/or child business objects
- Support of stored procedures extended to include functions
The JDBC adapter also supports mainframe data access through DB2 Information Integrator Classic Federation for z/OS®, V8.1, which provides Web and distributed applications with read/write connectivity to mainframe databases.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for JText v5.6
This adapter includes the following new enhancements:
- Stack traces are provided on all significant error conditions. During adapter failures, these traces help determine the root cause of the failure.
- Secure FTP is now supported. Secure FTP allows enterprise clients (such as financial institutions and credit card companies) to run their Secure FTP servers in a secure mode. With Secure FTP enabled, all the control and data flows between the FTP server and the adapter are encrypted and flow through a secure socket.
- Users can now run the JText adapter in service call processing mode only, without using polling: A new connector configuration property, "NoPoll," has been added to turn this feature on.
The JText adapter is bidirectionally enabled and can parse bidirectional data. Use this product when an application does not have a C, C++, or Java standard API through which the broker can communicate, and when it is not feasible to have an event table for a custom-built application. In these cases, the simple method for integrating an application into a larger system is by exchanging text files through the JText connector. In addition to support for local text files, the WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for JText supports integration with remote text files accessible using the FTP protocol. A zero-byte event file is handled appropriately, providing greater integration durability. You can move across the network with minimal changes to integration parameters.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Lotus Domino V1.3
This adapter is meta-data driven and enables bidirectional, real-time integration between Lotus Domino and other enterprise applications. The adapter supports integration with Lotus Domino at a "document" level. New in this release, the Lotus Domino adapter now includes a product signature, for use with Tivoli license management.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for mySAP.com V6.0
This adapter offers bidirectional, real-time integration between WebSphere Business Integration Servers and applications running on SAP application servers (versions 3.1I — 4.6 and 6.20). The adapter provides robust integration capabilities while leveraging SAP's Java API (jCO). A multi-threaded runtime allows the adapter to scale during broker initiated request processing while the integrity of event sequencing is maintained during application events. An Object Discovery Agent is included with the adapter that provides rich introspection and generation functionality during development time.
With this release, the following enhancements are provided:
- Support for IBM DB2 Information Integrator.
- The BAPI Module is driven entirely by BO definitions and no longer requires Java proxies.
- Additional performance improvements. Refer to the product release notes for more information.
The adapter supports all of SAP's interfaces and presents users with numerous integration options with relatively little risk. To achieve this, the adapter provides its core integration capabilities in distinct modules of functionality.
The Extension Module has advanced event detection mechanisms and business object handlers that manipulate the most common objects from SAP. You can retrieve and manipulate objects to and from SAP in real time, and retrieve objects through both request/reply and publish/subscribe models. The adapter notifies you of the success and status of your object transaction request, and returns the unique ID of any created objects. The adapter enables real-time retrieval of a complex object from SAP or a request to create, change, or delete an object. To facilitate upgrades and ease of maintenance, the ABAP components of the Extension module are implemented in the WebSphere Business Integration Adapter SAP Development Namespace.
The RFC Server Module enables SAP applications to make synchronous calls to the collector agent. This event-driven functionality is ideal for systems that require real-time access to a broker for handling requests. This module is multi-threaded for scalability. It includes a non-invasive business object generation tool that facilitates business object development.
The BAPI Module allows direct calls to BAPIs. By accessing the BAPIs without routing the call through the ABAP Extension infrastructure, the adapter greatly improves performance. This module is 100% non-invasive. All business object information is stored externally to the SAP system.
The ALE Module enables the connector to send IDocs into SAP for processing by ALE, and to receive IDocs from SAP to ALE event notification. This 100% non-invasive asynchronous solution uses SAPs tRFC protocol for guaranteeing exactly-once delivery and is ideal for large objects.
The Hierarchical Dynamic Retrieve Module offers 100% non-invasive metadata-driven data retrieval for application-specific business objects.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for PeopleSoft V3.1
This adapter offers bidirectional, real-time integration between PeopleSoft App/PeopleTools versions and other e-commerce, CRM, supply chain, and ERP applications. Three components comprise this adapter: PeopleSoft 7 adapter, PeopleSoft 8 adapter, and the PeopleSoft Object Discovery Agent.
The PeopleSoft 7 adapter is C++-based. It supports PeopleTools V7.55, 7.57, and 7.63 (PeopleSoft application V7.x). It interacts with PeopleSoft using the PeopleSoft Message Agent API and a set of message definitions for each business object. It also supports event notification.
The PeopleSoft 8 adapter is entirely Java-based, and it supports PeopleTools v8.14 to v8.43 (PeopleSoft application v8.x): New in this release, this adapter also supports PeopleTools v8.44 and v8.45. This adapter interacts with PeopleSoft through the PeopleTools Component Interface Java API. It also supports propagating events with only changed (or delta) information using the CME feature of Adapter Runtime and PeopleSoft's integration capabilities. The adapter can also operate in a multithreaded mode during request processing, which improves adapter performance; multiple events can be processed concurrently.
The adapters are metadata-driven, which eases management by making the integration infrastructure application-independent. Other new enhancements to this adapter include:
- Support for child verbs (Insert, Update, and Delete)
- Support for IBM DB2 Information Integrator
- Support for Delta Event propagation
The PeopleSoft Object Discovery Agent generates WebSphere Business Integration business object definitions to be used by the PeopleSoft 8 adapter.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Siebel V4.6
This adapter provides comprehensive bidirectional, real-time integration between Siebel and order management, ERP, e-business, and custom and legacy systems in a one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-many scenario. This Siebel-validated WebSphere Business Integration Adapter enables you to provide superior customer service and to cost-effectively execute and manage quote-to-order fulfillment processes that span multiple applications within the enterprise and also to trading partners, without any customizations, or additions to your Siebel installation. Support for IBM DB2 Information Integrator is new for this adapter.
The Siebel adapter uses the Siebel Java API to ensure database and client independence. The adapter agent can directly access and manipulate Siebel Business Objects and Siebel Business Components, and also now supports Integration Objects. The adapter can support any platform of Siebel (for example, Windows 98, Windows NT™, UNIX®, or Web), in any deployment strategy (thin client, fat client, or Web), and in any mode (tethered or undocked). A unique event capture mechanism ensures that all events are captured, regardless of deployment strategy or state of the environment. The adapter is meta-data driven to enable GUI extensibility and development without recoding. Through configuration, the WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Siebel e-business applications can authenticate in a specific Siebel Role, abiding by all restrictions for that role. Another configuration ensures that all Siebel customizations are visible and honored by this connector during processing. The Siebel adapter can be deployed in a single instance or multiple instances, for scalability and performance. The Siebel adapter supports connectivity to Siebel 2000, Siebel 7, and Siebel 7.5: New in this release is support for Siebel 7.7.
The Siebel EAI Dynamic Link Library (DLL) is separate connectivity component that was offered as part of WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Siebel eBusiness Applications. This component will not be delivered and supported from this release onwards.
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Web Services V3.4
This adapter supports SOAP 1.2 and conformance with Web Services-Interoperability Organization (WS-I). This adapter exposes WebSphere InterChange Server business processes, in the form of collaborations, as Web Services. You get a set of self-contained, dynamic applications that can be described, published, located, or invoked over the network to create innovative products, processes, and value chains. This adapter can also communicate to externally hosted Web Services with enhanced configurability.
The Web Services adapter enables true bidirectional support for event and request processing from within the adapter. Event processing can be synchronous or asynchronous, and listeners within the adapter provide support for Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) over HTTP, HTTPS, and JMS transports. Integration with the Web Services Gateway product exposes/invokes external services on behalf of the adapter. A WSDL ODA eases generation and deployment of business objects. The ODA can retrieve WSDL from a local file or connect to a remote URL or UDDI registry.
The WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Web Services includes Eclipse Technology. Eclipse is an award-winning, open source framework for the construction of powerful software development tools and rich desktop applications. Leveraging the Eclipse plug-in framework to integrate technology on the desktop saves technology providers time and money by enabling them to focus their efforts on delivering differentiation and value for their offerings. Eclipse is a multi-language, multi-platform, multi-vendor supported environment that it is built by an open source community of developers and it is provided royalty-free by the Eclipse Foundation. Eclipse is written in the Java language, includes extensive plug-in construction toolkits and examples, and can be deployed on a range of desktop operating systems including Windows, Linux, QNX, and Macintosh OS X. WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for WebSphere MQ Workflow V2.7
This adapter supports WebSphere MQ Workflow v3.3.2, v3.4 and now also supports v3.5. In this release, the Workflow adapter has been enhanced to provide error logging for synchronous as well as asynchronous service requests to the MQ Workflow application. This adapter's configuration template now also incorporates an AuditQueue, and log messages are captured even for datagram requests.
WebSphere MQ Workflow is a workflow engine that permits users to construct processes that include both manual and automated steps. At the specific points where manual tasks, information or action are required in a process, the WebSphere MQ Workflow adapter provides the capability to build pauses between the state steps, or stages of the processes where data is transformed by a transaction taking place in the underlying applications, or in the manual activities taking place outside the process. These pauses, or Long-Lived Transactions, are critical features in the ability to automate business processes.
The WebSphere MQ Workflow adapter complements the integration broker by merging sophisticated workflow capabilities with IBM's superior business process management features. The Java-based WebSphere Business Integration Adapter enables hybrid implementations of WebSphere MQ Workflow with an integration broker solution. The combination of products provides a best-of-breed integration strategy for companies seeking to automate processes that do not necessarily take place instantaneously, but rather require sustained pauses for reasons such as obtaining approvals, meeting regulatory requirements, or satisfying industry-standard procedures.
The WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for WebSphere MQ Workflow functions in several different ways. It initiates synchronous and asynchronous interaction between the integration broker flows and WebSphere MQ Workflow. If, for example, during an order process based on an WebSphere Business Integration Collaboration, an approval must be obtained, then the Adapter prompts WebSphere MQ Workflow to pause and wait until a response has been returned from an underlying application (which could be an automated process or could be as a the result of a manual step). Correspondingly, WebSphere MQ Workflow prompts the Connector to initiate Collaboration processes.

Software requirements: The WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework and Adapters broaden their support for integration brokers and for new Operating Systems. An Adapter Framework is required for each server to which you are connecting an adapter. An Adapter Framework is also required when using a WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Development Kit.
Special note regarding Adapter Framework v2.6 compatibility
WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework V2.6 supports WebSphere Business Integration Adapters delivered in the September 2004, June 2004, and December 2003, releases. WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework v2.6 contains certain enhancements, such as support for the 1.4.2 Java Runtime Environment, that require modifications to the startup scripts for many of the adapters in the June 2004 and December 2003 releases.
New startup scripts and instructions for updating your existing adapters for Framework V2.6 compatibility will be provided in a migration guide and in a WebSphere Business Integration Technote within 30 days of product availability.
Customers can
- Remain on WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework v2.4 and continuing to run your existing adapters, or
- Make startup script changes to their adapters and upgrade to the new version of the adapter framework to take advantage of the new features in this release.
A WebSphere Business Integration Technote and a migration guide list the Adapter Framework v2.6-compatible adapters and provide information about the new startup scripts. The Technote, migration guide, and startup scripts will become available within 30 days of WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework V2.6's planned availability date.

Additional Information about Server Foundation support
As noted elsewhere in this document, WebSphere Business Integration Adapters have been verified to support WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation V5.1 and V5.1.1. Adapter Framework V2.4 (and the adapters released in June 2004 and December 2003)and Adapter Framework V2.6 (and the adapters included in this release) will work with these versions of Server Foundation. Exceptions are listed below:
- WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for SAP Exchange Infrastructure
- WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Web Services

- WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for Siebel v4.6 supports all except SUSE LINUX and Red Hat.
- WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework v2.6 supports all of the platforms listed. However, The TMTP component of the framework is not supported on Linux Red Hat or on HP-UX. The CEI function is not supported on HP-UX, Linux Red Hat, or on SUSE LINUX.
National language support
Unless otherwise noted, all products in this release of WebSphere Business Integration Adapters provide basic enablement support and translations only for the following national languages and their associated operating environments:

Planning information
Packaging: This is a Passport Advantage offering only. All of the products included in the WebSphere Business Integration Adapter portfolio are distributed via electronic distribution and physical media packs. A separate media pack is provided for each product. Support for all specified operating systems and languages is provided in each media pack. Media packs for all offering contain CDs, but the mainframe adapter packaging also includes 3480 tapes.
When downloaded from a Web site, this program contains the applicable IBM license agreement, and License Information (LI), if appropriate, and will be presented for acceptance at the time of installation of the program. The license and LI will be stored in a directory such as LICENSE.TXT for future reference.
