| Description |
This new release of WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.3 builds on the earlier release of WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2 by continuing to make use of the same product level and functionality, but by extending the product packaging to include a limited use license of DB2 V8.1, which was previously a prerequisite product. The similar inclusion of a limited use license of WebSphere MQ V5.3 was a feature of the announcement of WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2. With this new announcement, IBM is further extending the product through the addition of a limited use license for DB2 V8.1.
In all other aspects, the product remains the same as WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2 and for clarity the description of WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2, as used in the previous announcement, and still current today, is included below.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2 enables the definition, deployment, and operation of a robust and flexible B2B environment resulting in the flow of information between trading partners. With community integration you can extend your business integration by defining relationships with the trading partners who participate in the electronic exchange of business information. WebSphere Business Integration Connect uses community integration to build a B2B environment where all participants benefit by viewing the status of their transactions and maintaining their own partner definitions.
Communities of trading partners exchange information on inventory status, purchase orders, or invoices to ensure that the benefits do not end as their business processes extend to interact with those of their business partners.
Using WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2, you can configure connections with multiple partners over a variety of different protocols and standards, both focused on industry and generic. After you and your trading partners agree on a transport mechanism, such as SMTP, FTP, or HTTP, you can decide on a data format protocol. This format might be XML, or if EDI data is to be transmitted over HTTP, the AS2 standard. If partners are communicating using Web services, then the data would be in SOAP format. Any interaction between partners can be defined to use any of the supported protocols.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2 is typically deployed on the edge of the enterprise acting as the external interface between the enterprise and a variety of trading partners. The information exchanged with partners through WebSphere Business Integration Connect can come either directly from your applications or from middleware such as WebSphere Business Integration Server.
To reach its potential, an operational B2B deployment must quickly grow to a point at which its participants can realize demonstrable business value from the investment. WebSphere Business Integration Connect V4.2.2 defines the participants in a B2B relationship and the characteristics of the relationship. Many tools assist in the operational aspects of the B2B deployment, such as event and alert management. With WebSphere Business Integration Connect, your partner relationship and business processes can be changed as needed, allowing your business relationships and exchanges of information with your trading partners to be as fluid and responsive as your own internal processes and activities.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect is a part of the overall solution from end-to-end business integration. It acts as the specialized B2B gateway and as the interface for external interactions with suppliers and customers. Your business applications may directly drive WebSphere Business Integration Connect or they may be integrated with middleware, such as WebSphere Business Integration Server or WebSphere Data Interchange. WebSphere Business Integration Server can provide process integration and automation, and WebSphere Data Interchange can provide specialized EDI data handling and transformation and mapping support.
Individual attributes that a B2B gateway delivers as part of the end-to-end integration solution include:
- Communication between partners, handling both the transport layer and the format of the data exchanged between partners
- Definition of partner relationships, including the selection of communication protocols, the choice of security to be used, and the flow of information and checkpoints in the B2B process defining the exchange of information between partners
- Operational management of all the events within the B2B gateway, including tracking the status of all transactions between partners, and defined processes to generate and handle alerts on exceptions
An efficient B2B enterprise requires a methodology that enables the assessment and planning required to identify and incorporate a trading partner into a community. The methodology must also include operational support for the maintenance of the integrated community. WebSphere Business Integration Connect is available in conjunction with such a methodology Community Integration Services from IBM that guides enterprises interested in extended community integration through the process of:
- Identifying trading partners who want a mutually beneficial trading relationship
- Preparing those partners for participation in an integrated community
- Supporting the participants in their various roles in the community
To meet the needs of a variety of clients, three different editions of WebSphere Business Integration Connect are available. These editions share many common functions and can be customized for specific types of solutions.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect Advanced Edition
WebSphere Business Integration Connect Advanced Edition is intended for enterprises that need to connect to a growing number of trading partners with a potentially high number of trading partner connections or a large number of transactions. It includes functions and an environment that is scalable and robust with the necessary management and integration tools appropriate for a key B2B gateway, functioning as a critical part of the enterprise end-to-end integration solution extending out to trading partners. In addition to the scalability and management functions, WebSphere Business Integration Connect Advanced Edition offers a full range of connectivity options. The transport options supported for connections between partners are SMTP, FTP(S), HTTP, and HTTPS. The data formats supported for transmission across these transport options are:
- RNIF 1.1
- RNIF 2.0 of RosettaNet
- X12 and EDIFACT (both AS1 and AS2)
- Custom XML
- Binary files
This product is priced both per CPU (defined by the number of CPUs where the Document Manager component is installed) and by the number of trading partner connections defined.
In addition, WebSphere Business Integration Connect Advanced Edition provides an extensible and flexible framework, enabling clients and Business Partners to easily extend the solution to fit their business needs. For example, additional protocols can seamlessly be plugged into WebSphere Business Integration Connect while custom validation can easily be called when a document is processed by WebSphere Business Integration Connect.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect Enterprise Edition
WebSphere Business Integration Connect Enterprise Edition is the same product as the Advanced Edition, but with no licensing restriction on the number of trading partner connections. It is ideal for the large enterprise that is building a hub where any number of partner connections may be required. These partners can maintain their definitions on the hub themselves in response to a mandate or instruction from the community owner or changes in their own circumstance. The pricing is based on the number of CPUs (defined by the number of CPUs where the Document Manager component is installed) in the installed server.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect supports process integration and RosettaNet
WebSphere Business Integration Connect delivers industry-specific business process templates and integration capabilities to connect disparate applications executing business processes based on a single, accurate view of their data, including critical item and inventory information. This extension of the current offering supplies function and adherence within the RosettaNet standards. RosettaNet is an independent, non-profit consortium dedicated to the collaborative development and rapid deployment of open Internet-based business standards that align processes within the global high technology trading network. RosettaNet is the accepted supply-chain integration standard and solution for the high tech industry and other manufacturing sectors, addressing the demands for a non proprietary solution for standardizing business with customers and partners.
WebSphere Business Integration Connect as a key part of the WebSphere platform supports RosettaNet standards to provide powerful options for customers with process integration needs. Enterprises typically face B2B transaction problems that fall into the process integration category:
- Conducting inter-enterprise and intra-industry transactions with suppliers, plants, and customers utilizing the RosettaNet environment
- Achieving a consistent and unified view of information across the enterprise and across disparate systems and applications to aid in reporting, planning, and business analysis
- Modeling and implementing improved process design to aid in reducing labor costs and eliminating manual processes
- Analyzing business activity to improve operational efficiency
Included in this offering are functions that support the following, available to run on RNIF 1.1 and RNIF 2.0:
